Surender Mohan Pathak, is an author of Hindi-language crime fiction with 314 books to his credit. His major characters are Crime reporter Sunil (unprecedented 123 Titles), Vimal (46 Titles) and Philosopher Detective Sudhir (23 titles). Apart from series, he has written 60+ Novels in thriller category.
This is a good adaptation of Cool & Lam series novel Kept Women Can't Quit by Erle Stanley Gardner. Its quite well executed and adapted to Sunil Series. I had just read the English novel, so it was difficult for me to maintain the interest in this book. However, I also think that the pace slackens in between so I could have lost interest because of this.
Plot is simple, bank van is robbed, one of the culprit is caught with half the loot and he claims that Prabhudayaal has taken the other half. Now to clear his name Prabhudayaal takes certain steps, one of which takes him to Sunil, and circumstances push Sunil to investigate, which he does. However, story is not as simple as plot, some things happens which confuses the matter, other culprit is murdered Sunil finds himself holding an amount equal to the half of the loot. Now how does Sunil extricate himself and eventually Prabhudayaal along is the story.
You'll enjoy it, its not the usual Sunil novel, clearly because its adapted from Cool & Lam series novel, instead of regular Perry mason novels. So its more like a thriller of which murder mystery is only a part. You are given some clues, however, they are not enough to solve the entire events puzzle. However Sunil manages that through two brainwaves, so well all you can do is cheer for him. :)
The story also involve some clear trickeries by Sunil, once with an apartment and once solving the entire puzzle without apparantly getting out of the hotel he is kept in. However they are much better executed by Donald Lam in Kept Women Can't Quit. Maybe thats why I did not like this book so much. However, regular SMP fans will find them fascinating.
So read on, it wont really disappoint you, but its definitely not one of the Sunil's best!
