Sadie and Zoey, best friends and sharers of shoes, have both lost their jobs for Very Bad Reasons. Sadie ditched her lawyer boyfriend (who happened to be her boss) and Zoey followed her nose into a story that shattered her burgeoning career as a journalist.
When the story that destroyed Zoey’s career lands her next to a dead body, Sadie’s new job at the police station makes for the perfect spy. Unravelling the mystery proves to be more dangerous than expected, and the two find themselves wedged between romance, organized crime and deciding what shoes go best with a stakeout.
K. Lew is part of a writing team with her best friend, C.R. Lockhart. When one moved to the opposite end of the country, they moved their wild adventures to paper. The more they talk, the crazier it gets. She now lives in a suburb of Toronto, Canada, where she found her man and her dogs. She misses the good sushi but loves the country trails and down-home people. She keeps her inner City Girl alive by wearing incredibly impractical shoes and rapping in her car.
Thank you to the authors for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
We all have a chosen family- the people who so deeply impact our lives and don't share our DNA- that we would go above and beyond for.
This is the story of just that.
Zoey and Sadie have been together for all shades of good and bad times throughout their lives. When one is in need, the other will be there without a second thought.
This book reminds us that while we all appreciate a good-looking man, we don't need them to save the day! These characters are fun, sassy and strong, I really appreciated the badass feminism they had going on.
Knives and Knightsticks has a little bit of everything - sisterhood, romance, excitement and mystery! It will keep you turning the pages
I adored this story! If you are looking for a fun, romantic mystery that will keep you guessing- pick this up!
Knives and Knightsticks was so much fun to read, Sadie and Zoey are best friends that are all about loyalty, fun, romance and making terrible decisions.
Both of them are at a crossroads in their lives, Sadie has just broken up with her abusive boyfriend/boss and Zoey has found herself blacklisted as a journalist after a story she wrote ruffled some feathers.
One thing leads to another and Zoey ends up discovering a body which may be connected in some way to the story that ended her career. Instead of letting it go like a sane person, she runs headlong into danger in an effort to find out what’s going on. Sadie doesn’t stop her from pursuing her plan so much as temper her ideas into something a little safer, which is one of the sweetest things about this book. She knows that her best friend is a larger than life personality and loves her for it rather than despite of it.
They’re both hilarious, very realistic characters, and their friendship is a goal!
The two best friends happen to fall for two incredibly hot cousins, which I didn’t manage to enjoy fully because the story treads the line between cosy mystery and something darker so I couldn’t fully root for the romance storyline without knowing how it was going to end, even if I was getting all kinds of fuzzy feelings watching the relationships develop.
This book ticked all the boxes I needed in a book right now – women saving the day, funny female friendships, and a good mobster mystery.
Just finished reading KNIVES AND KNIGHTSTICKS by K. Lew & C.R. Lockhart, who sent me a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
This one kinda reminded me of Two Broke Girl's 👭 x Rookie Blue 👮♂️🚔
#BookReview 📚 Sadie and Zoey are down on their luck in the best city in the world; Toronto 😅. They both lost their jobs, and are struggling to make ends meet. But they still have each other and that's all that matters to these two besties.
When the news story that destroyed Zoey’s investigative journalism career lands her next to a dead body, Sadie’s new job at the police station will help make for the perfect spy and backup. But unravelling this story will lead the girls into a dangerous mobster underworld of the city. They will need to not only decide what outfits look best on a stakeout, but figure out who they can and cannot trust, while wielding some dangerous weapons.
This one had a bit of something for everyone. Friendship, romance, badassness, mystery and action. I definitely recommend 👌. Count me in for the next book ladies!
What a ride these girls took us on!!!! Couldn’t put it down! This story is one that’s based on friendship of the heart! With a added dose of comedy and sassiness!! Can’t wait for the next book by these two fabulous authors!!
Being brave yet scared is the lesson we are thought!
Knives And Knightsticks is an amateur sleuth mystery with a touch of romance set mainly in Toronto.
Investigative journalist Zoey lost her job and was blacklisted by other newspapers after a story she was working became linked to some high-powered criminals. Meanwhile, Zoey’s best friend and flatmate Sadie landed a new job working as a clerical assistant in a police station.
Zoey found a small job delivering served court papers, but at one delivery address she discovered a dead body and a kidnapped girl. Although the police arrived at the crime scene, Zoey’s investigative instincts kicked in and with Sadie’s help she decided to dig into the situation further.
In Zoey’s personal life, a handsome stranger paid for her coffee, then asked her for a date. It became a double date when she took Sadie with her and romance for both of them looked promising.
The chapters alternate between Zoey and Sadie; I liked the opening chapters for both of the girls and this is what attracted me to the book. The story is fast paced; at times, I felt it skipped over some aspects and left out points which would have made some scenes more realistic. Even amateur sleuthing needs to be believable and while I liked the concept of the story I would have liked to see more character depth and much more grit and danger. I prefer stories that involve Mafia groups to have a dark sinister aspect to keep me invested in them. Sadly, although I liked the opening chapters the direction that the authors took the story didn’t work for me.
Sadie and Zoey are the best kind of best friends. And while down and dirty adventure may not be Sadie’s first choice, she’ll do what she has to for Zoey.
Such a fun book! Sadie and Zoey are both going through some life changes. Sadie was lucky enough to stumble into a new job that made leaving her old job and cheating boyfriend much easier. Zoey has lost her reporting job, and publishing a retraction of what was supposed to be her big story isn’t exactly opening doors for her in the industry.
Whatever else may be going wrong in their lives, Sadie and Zoey always have each other, so they know they’ll make it through whatever life throws their way. Not only is their relationship something all friends could aspire to, they were individually charming, snarky and amusingly insightful. If only they could have noticed a few big red flags about the direction their lives had suddenly taken.
This book was great, and I can’t wait for new books in the series. I’d give this one 4 out of 5 stars and recommend it to those who enjoy excellent friendship tales and contemporary fiction. Their single-girl city life sounds exciting, and I’m certain those from Toronto would recognize some of the landmarks mentioned by the authors.
I received this book from the authors (yes there's 2 which is pretty cool!) In exchange for an honest review!
This was an entertaining book! I read it in 24 hours and enjoyed it. I don't read a lot of cop shop crime stories, but this one had a fun take, with 2 best friends, who aren't actually any form of police officer, taking the lead and solving the crime! I have to admit, there are times in the book where I had to suspend reality and not question certain behaviors, there might have even been a couple eye rolls, if I'm being completely honest which I always promise to be, but you know what? I still enjoyed the book, was eager to solve the case, saw one twist coming but didn't see another, and had a few laughs, and even enjoyed certain parts of the love story. The best part was the last few chapters as the case unfolded, I thought this was the strongest part of the book. I'll be watching for the sequel coming out this summer because now I gotta know what happens next!
I give this book a solid 3.5/5, rounded up to 4 because it's super cool how the 2 authors wrote this book together, each writing the point of view of one of the 2 main characters!
These two debut authors take the reader though a wild ride of mysteries and relationships. It's so refreshing to read about genuine friends supporting each other through thick and thin. Sure they talk about guys, hair and what outfits to wear, but they are also out to uncover who the bad guys are!
Knives and Knightstick by Lew and Lockhart Rating-4 Quote I Love- “we can do this two ways, Zoey. I can throw you over my shoulder and carry you like a caveman. Or,” he gave a small growl as I bit my lip over the image, “you can hop on my back and trust that I’m strong enough to take care of you. And Zoey” my eyes widened as I watched his pupils dilate, “I promise, I’ll take care of you.”
Romance, mystery, and the mafia. What more could a girl ask for. This book follows two best friends Sadie and Zoey who share outfits and shoes. Sadie is starting a new job in a police station and Zoey is a blacklisted reporter. After finding a dead body in an apartment Zoey and Sadie are thrown into a world they never expected. They are thrown into the world of the mafia. The two girls team up and become modern day Nancy Drews, which I love. I enjoyed watching them investigate and go on missions, I felt like I was going on these investigations with them. Sadie and Zoey are some of my favourite women. I loved their connection and friendship. I also love how they stick together, because, girl power. They are just the best and I cannot wait to read more of them. While these girls made the book for me, I cannot forget about the men in this novel that made me swoon. Omg, there were so many good looking men in this novel. After one was introduced more just kept coming and I was into it. Hot Italian men, hot cops, and a hot PI. I could not get over them. All of these men were hot, possessive, and protective over the two girls. I mean what I would do to be in their shoes and to be surrounded by these men. I am looking forward to seeing who the girls end up with because a few connections were made in this novel and I am intrigued. This review was hard to write because there were so many things I wanted to talk about but I could not because it would spoil the whole novel one thing I do know is that I just loved this novel and the journey it took me on. This novel will keep you on your toes and keep you intrigued as the mystery Sadie and Zoey are trying to solve unwraps. I cannot wait to read the next book and I highly recommend this novel. I’m looking forward to seeing what else Lew and Lockhart write.
I had the chance to be a beta reader for Knives and Knightsticks. It was interesting to do this when the genre of this novel is not what I usually go for.
This is written by 2 debut authors. I was surprised to learn that they each gave a voice to one of the 2 characters. The book goes from Sadie to Zoey, back and forth. It was done flawlessly. It was well merged together and I couldn't tell K. Lew and C.R. Lockhart wrote separately.
I enjoyed the girls' friendship, how they chose each other to make their own family. I like their relationship (chatting while one is in the shower, been there, done that) and how they spend most of their time together (eating, relaxing, watching tv). It's so relatable!!!
I also really enjoyed the location. It's in Toronto and I've here long enough that I recognize the neibourhoods!
Of course, I have read romance books before. But as I already mentioned, it is not what I prefer. I always find the romance absolutely unbelievable (Yes I'm thinking of how Zoey met her man) and frustratingly unaccessible (how the main characters ALWAYS have a great body on top of a sparkling personality).
I prefer delving into cozy mysteries... I don't think this book could go in the cozy category (too much action and not enough cats). I figured out who the boys were way too quickly (but the mole was a surprise). It was a fun adventure, with gutsy girls.
Even if this wasn't my usual "cup of tea", I will want to read book 2, because that ending was... UGHHHHHH... it was a very frustrating cliffhanger!
The story follows lifelong best friends Sadie and Zoey who are trying to get back on track. Sadie has a new job at a local police department after ditching her old role when her boyfriend/boss cheated on her (yikes) And Zoey is trying to find herself after her flourishing journalism career ended badly. When Zoey’s happens upon a dead body that leads back to the story that destroyed her career, she knows Sadie makes for the perfect spy at the police station. But unravelling the mystery becomes dangerous. The pair find themselves wedged between romance, organised crime and deciding what shoes go best with a stakeout.
Wow, this book was such an entertaining read. I loved that this story encompassed so much; friendship, romance, thrills and shocks. I couldn’t put it down and ended up reading it in two sittings. I love the concept of two best friends trying figure life out with new job, new romances and ultimately ending up wrapped up in a world of mafia. The connection between Sadie and Zoey made for wonderful reading. Their opposing views and awkward situation they found themselves in made the story so funny.
I was so intrigued as to how the story would end and I felt the ending was amazing!! I cannot wait for a sequel!!!
What a debut novel! The two authors come out swinging with Knives and Knightsticks, the first book of their trilogy.
This story follows two girls living in Toronto, Ontario. Their friendship is at the very heart of the novel as the roommates navigate romance, murder, and increasing danger. I loved how the authors avoided the common tropes of catfights and jealousy, and we were given instead two heart sisters: women who support each other, even if it means taking on the world of organized crime to do it.
