It has been a long time since I read a non-academic church book, and though Goettl's work offers advice based on what she learned in reading the Book of Nephi, what she shared was absolutely her voice. That is to say that she did not shape her analysis with politics, an agenda to prove something, or because she is trying to write a best seller. Sure, she quotes LDS prophets, but not in a manner that seems like she is using them to show or prove some kind of ecclesiastical superiority. Rather as ...more

I love the take that Sharla Goettl shares about this strange time we live in. She shares insights on how we can share the gospel with children/family while the world is in turmoil.

I highlighted a few quotes that illustrate some of the key points that I have taken away from this book.

"Time would not have been taken from our church meetings if Christ did not believe more personalized family instruction would be most instructive. We may feel ill prepared, that we have few options, or that we are st

Beware the Bookwyrm
This book dove deep into the teaching examples in Nephi’s life. The Book of Mormon is packed full of them and I’ve read several books on parenting based on this book. However, this is the first time I’ve dived so deeply into First Nephi. It was an enjoyable experience and I recommend this to others who are seeking a little help with their own kids and other youth in the church.

It makes me crazy when I read self-help books and they give you a common problem that you can relate to so you know you’

The idea of "intentional parenting" seems to be captured in the thoughts, ideas, suggestions, and personal insight shared in this book. So full of positive, encouraging, and reassuring advice to parents or leaders of youth seeking to know themselves and to know how Christ will help them in life. Encouraging and meaningful wise council expressed in simple yet effective ways for youth to grasp onto like "Start where you are, with what you know and ask the Holy Ghost to guide you," or "Pray, move f ...more

This was a very interesting read. I would have never dived that deep into 1 Nephi, but it is evident how much love Sharla has for the youth she has had the privilege of working with. This is a question I have asked myself over and over in the last several years: How to I teach my kids to become Spiritually Resilient? This book gives some very good perspective on how to make that happen. Although this book's target it audience are those who work with youth (or have youth in their homes), my thoug ...more

Sharla Goettl offers a very insightful look at parenting in today's complex world. Her book takes parents on a practical and Spirit-led journey to explore their strengths and growth opportunities as they lead their families. I love how the book offers specific examples from the first family in The Book of Mormon, sharing how to use gospel light to help our youth shine in a dark world. The end of each chapter offers a quick summary and inspiring quotes. She really did her homework and offers tons ...more

I felt there was much in this book to help a parent cope with the challenges of raising youth and keep them spiritually grounded. I wish I had read this when my kids were younger.

I love how she used Nephi as an example, there were certain things he needed to do to be successful and these same elements apply to all our children. I feel there is magic in finding patterns in the lives of the prophets.

I like the quote, "Our life lessons are taught most effectively when they are based on honest,

I felt powerfully uplifted by Sharla’s words. I actually feel like she wrote this entire book for me! She inspired me, she awakened confidence in myself to be a loving teacher, guide and mother of children, and she did it all without making me regret the past. I loved reading her insights into Nephi’s life and feeling how relatable Nephi is to me and my life. There was such an uplifting feeling going on through the whole book! I feel nothing but confidence in my journey ahead! Thank you, Sharla ...more

The author helps break down the process of building "Spiritual Resilience" in our youth step by step by using Nephi's journey as our guide. She helps you focus in on areas that need improvement, all while reminding us that as parents we are the guides, or even sometimes the "scribes" but it's really their journey and not only will they be able to handle the greater responsibility we give them but they are going to thrive!
