I love these old thrillers that try to predict the future and get everything wrong. Written in 1980, but set in 1986, we have Jimmy Carter having won two terms, the Soviet Union and China fighting a border war, Germany reunited(got that right, but with nukes) and American in a depression.
So a new President(who comes across as a SOB) plans a radical plan, massive cuts to military, massive income taxes, seizure of private property. This makes a lot of people mad and in a few months a military coup in in the works.
A lot of fuss and feathers, characters that are cardboard and the ending that falls flat. In between are mechanics of the coup, the counter moves and speeches. This was worth one read all those years ago, but now, older and wiser reader, see that it is a clinker.
