(I'm re-reading the series).

I read these books as a kid, and I don't think I realized then just how much the series is about environmental studies and working to save the environment. I appreciate the message behind such a cute storyline. :)

WHY DID IT NOT REGISTER THAT ICHIGO WAS 12??? AND THE OTHER GIRLS ARE OF A SIMILAR AGE??? (Zakuro is like 14~15 and Purin is like 10. also i have beef with quiches name. and pies name. and tarts name. and his whole series. it was made for preteens, but i'm judgemental to a max right now.)

this series sexualizes these girls so much it makes me physically ill and uncomfortable. the collar scene was really bad and the stuff w kish is just plain assault, not romantic? why is he even a possible love interest? i like the story so it sucks how many problems this has but i dont think ill be continuing on w the series..

This volume was adorable. I'm happy that Ichigo had some time to spend with Aoyama. But what I prefered the most is Minto being in one hell of a state.

Quel petit tome douceur et agréable! Je suis contente qu'Ichigo passe plus de temps avec Aoyama. Mais ce que j'ai le plus aimé, c'est voir Minto dans tous ses états!

Talk about a manga series that's just cutesy for the sake of being cutesy.

There is absolutely nothing spectacular about this manga whatsoever. This has the same formula A as Sailor Moon. A couple of girls has some cute outfits and use their unique powers to defeat the evil bad guys.

While I never watched or read Sailor Moon I know that each of the girls represent a certain planet and each had their unique powers. Tokyo Mew Mew is no exception.

Instead of each girl representing a planet, each one is representing an endangered animal species. Ok, that's environmentally considerate but then it adds these alien villains that are making animals go insane and I really don't understand the purpose. It tries to explain it and I found the premise of the villains surprisingly complicated. But after it was explained, I just forgot about two minutes after reading it. It's trying to add science fiction and magic within the same story and it just doesn't make any sense to me.

On top of that, it also adds just cheesy cutesy moments that I found rolling my eyes. Like Ichigo interacting with that one guy that is in charge of the café. He does something unexpected and she blushes for it. It’s just the typical good-looking guy who is NOT the love interest doing repetitive and cliché actions that make the girl embarrassed or assume that he has feelings for her. Yeah, never seen that before.

In the first few pages of the first volume, we take a look at the main character going on a date with her crush. A few events happen to show all the girls in the Mew Mew project and people are trying to figure out who they are. When the last member joins they are on TV and become popular and no one can figure out who they are despite them not wearing masks or disguises. What really? Even in the most obvious scenarios.

I mean really? Are people that stupid where they can’t figure it out? To put insult to injury, they have the students at the school and the fans have no idea who they are! Is it just me, or is it so difficult just to give them masks of the animal that they represent? It’s not like we won’t be able to tell them apart. And speaking of which . . .

The characters don’t have much to them and their personalities are just revolved around their chosen animals. Let me give you a few examples. Zakuro represents the grey wolf and her characters traits are her being silent and by herself most of the time. Pudding represents some sort of ape and guess what her personality is like? She’s energetic, fun, and just can’t sit still. Get it? She’s just like a real monkey and Zakuro is the lone wolf in the group. *sigh*

Sadly, the only characters that I can think of that has some sort of a personality are Lettuce and Mint. (odd choice of names) Mint is a spoiled snob that adores Zakuro and can be a bit bossy at times. Lettuce is kind, shy, and is very clumsy but very sweet. Ichigo’s love interest is as entertaining as a cardboard box. Ryou is just there to be fan service for the girls and Keiichiro is just . . . kinda there.

I would have finished it since it was only like what, seven volumes? But I couldn’t take it anymore and gave up in the middle of volume 3. Sorry, there’re just so many cutesy moments I could take without any interesting characters or story.

Ichigo continues to seek out the remaining girls bearing animal genes alongside Mint and Lettuce, but with one of them being a rambunctious performer and the other a cold loner, will they be able to come together to protect their city in time? Ikumi keeps the energy flowing with another entertaining entry sure to have fans intrigued. How are the girls going to keep things together if they're all so vastly different?

Ichigo, Lettuce, and Mint continue battling aliens while they search for the remaining two Mew Mews. Perfect for younger audiences and fans of series like Sailor Moon, this manga is cute without getting too dark (more on this below). Because this series is geared for young girls, it relies heavily on archetypes and cliches (magical girl, everyone's personalities match their animals, etc.). Unfortunately, this doesn't make for the most compelling story line. The art, however, is very pretty.

The creepiness continues in volume two: Kish insists on kissing and "having some fun" with Ichigo, despite her protests. This manga really pushes the border on consent: things are always happening to these girls, and it gets more and more unnerving. Ichigo's feelings for classmate Masaya look like they might go somewhere. Overall, this is intended to be a cutesy, fluffy romance series; it's not my cup of tea. While this series sets itself up to be very pro-environmentalist, its message isn't very strong and series such as Dream Saga offer the same message in a much louder, noticeable way.

+++ Yhä edelleen upeasti piirretty, kaikki tytöt on nyt yhdessä ja ympäristönsuojeluteema on tosi kiva. Ja Minton ihastus Zakuroa kohtaan!

--- Kliseinen. Quiche!! Hyi yök - muistelin, että Quiche olis ollut yks mun lempparihahmoista silloin joskus nuorempana, mutta sehän on ihan järkyttävä creeperi, joka kohtelee Ichigoa todella seksistisesti!

I absolutely love "Tokyo Mew Mew" or "Mew Mew Power", depending on where you are from. The storyline is so unique and after reading each book, or watching each episode, you are left wanting more. I'd definitely recommend reading "Tokyo Mew Mew" or if that is not your thing, watching the series on Youtube. <3

Review for complete series

Ichigo is finally out on a date with her crush Aoyama when it is cut short by a strange occurrence: a cat appears and seemingly fuses with her. It doesn't take Ichigo long to notice changes coming over her in which she behaves more and more like a cat. When it is brought to her that this is a byproduct of a DNA experiment gone wrong, she is given a choice: find the others who have also been affected by the experiment and, with their help, fend off aliens who threaten the earth, or remain with cat DNA forever.

Objectively, Tokyo Mew Mew has so many things wrong with it, I could probably tear it to shreds. Subjectively, it's a good example of how a book can be a favourite without needing to be a 5-star read. This was one of my first manga and it has heavily influenced my manga reading for more than 10 years. Even now, while I can see many things that make me want to roll my eyes, I still love it to bits.

I love Ichigo (and strangely, so does almost the entire male cast). I love her quirkiness and upbeat nature. Give her cat genes, a pink outfit and some strawberries on top and you've really got a character that's just perfect for me to love. Unfortunately for the other Mew girls, Ichigo simply steals the show. I would imagine it is more balanced in the anime adaptation, but the other four girls often seem more like Ichigo's backup - they get their odd little chapter and all, but the story would barely differ without them. Nonetheless, there are a handful of lovely friendship scenes, my favourite being where they visit Mint and have a pillow fight.

I think one glance at the cover should already tell you that this manga is cute. And by cute, I mean disgustingly so. It's all pink, hearts, ribbons and cutesy poses. There's no way around saying it, there is just too much of it. And yet, thanks to a big dose of comedy, it's perfectly tolerable. I think any cat lover will have a lot to laugh, even if just for all the cat-ish misfortunes Ichigo constantly finds herself in. The art itself is also adorable - the proportions can look odd in some panels, but otherwise, Mia Ikumi is definitely way up there when it comes to my favourite manga artists. If she had an artbook, I'd buy it, no questions asked. In fact, I've always wished there were one.

Getting back to Ichigo's little harem, as much as I like Ichigo, it never sat quite right with me how many romances she had going on. It's one thing if they're all interested in her, but given that she's supposedly so in love with Aoyama, I thought she wavered quite fast when any of the others paid her any attention. That being said, out of all of Ichigo's love interests, Aoyama is by far my least favourite. The guy is just about as flat as you can get - an absolute oblivious bore. I never understood what Ichigo saw in him. Despite my initial dislike of him, I do confess that their actual romantic scenes together are indeed very cute - in those moments, I could see myself rooting for him. But at the end of the day, I still found the other characters more interesting.

Ryo and Ichigo had a lot more chemistry and I generally wished we could have seen more of him. While I would have definitely preferred him over Aoyama, it is actually Quiche who, for the past 10 years, has been one of the biggest letdowns in my manga reading history. Awkward name and too low-sitting trousers aside, I love Quiche - one of my all-time favourite male characters in manga and will always feel heartbroken over the fact that he and Ichigo weren't meant to be.

Tokyo Mew Mew will forever be a special series to me which, despite my sorrow of Quiche, I always find myself returning to for yet another reread! Some volumes include older short-stories of the author which are also pretty cute in their own right. I also loved the short story about Princess Azumi, the forerunner of Tokyo Mew Mew catgirls!

ENG
What is quite "funny" is that I had seen the first version of the anime when I was younger.
And I had never thought of getting the manga.
Recently, they announced a re-release, and I was really happy, because I also knew that a new version of the anime was coming out, and I absolutely wanted to read them before watching.
And I have to say it was quite an adventure haha.
I like this manga for the nostalgic side, and for the graphics; and some other little things.
But it's not my favorite manga ! On the other hand, I will read the sequel, because I don't even remember having "seen" this new character !!!
Also, a thought for the author who unfortunately passed away this year.

“Et skridt ad gangen. Sådan skal det gøres!”

I read the Danish translation.
I enjoyed how the plot developed in vol. 2 of Tokyo Mew Mew, and the new characters that were introduced.
The new characters added to the story and I liked how they were introduced in the story.
I really liked the Mew elements that were added ti the story, in works well. I am still a fan of the artstyle, it is still cute, elegant, detailed and delightful, and the art style make me happy. I still love how the art style changes between funny and detailed.

Looks like I'm about to ship KishXinchigo♥️moment 🤗- my fav ship goal. 1) kishXInchigo ♥️ 2) inchigoXryou. Looks like zakuro is also team with inchigo. zakuro has gray wolf genes, golden lion tamarin is inside pudding, lettuce is infused with the finless porpoise, mint merged with ultra marines lorikeet and inchigo is infused with the iriomote cat also together they formed a team called tokyo mew mew. They now become hero n beat the aliens who possessed the animals. I don't want inchigo with masaya. As for masaya- why he give inchigo the collar that has bell on it. I feel weird like he think of her as a cat n not person.

The love affairs surrounding Ichigo are rather unhealthy... The (soulless/NPC, by the way) guy she's madly in love with gives her a cat collar because she belongs to him and is "his little kitten", and the alien stalks her with approaches that are disturbing to say the least.

Other than that, the plot moves along quickly enough and the members of the group are endearing. Thank goodness for nostalgia....
