The first in the series, Pariah, was Highly Commended in the Crime Writers Association Debut Dagger Awards. It is published by Pan Macmillan. The follow-ups are The Helper and Marked, and I am hard at work on the fourth in the series. My writing influences include Ed McBain, Dennis Lehane, George Pelecanos, Robert Crais, Michael Connelly and Harlan Coben, amongst many others. My favourite quote about my work is one from the Guardian, now carried on the front of my novels: 'Recalls Harlan Coben - though for my money Jackson is the better writer.'

What an exciting read, I couldn’t put it down!
Erin wakes up groggy, she has been hit over the head and her child is gone!
Wow ! She is faced with a dilemma of not seeing her child again or committing some unspeakably violent acts ..... how would you react!? Will Erin do anything to get her child back?
Yes .... it is violent and may not suit some people, but the humour in the book lifts it to more that just an average thriller.
I didn’t realise until I was half way through, that this is book 4 in a series but I can honestly say it read perfectly as a stand alone.
Detective Callum Doyle is a great character.......and I think I have found a new author to explore.

Spun din capul locului că la un asemenea final nu m-am așteptat nicio secundă.
La început ni se prezintă o mamă tânără care se trezește brusc în casă fără fetița ei de 6 luni. Găsește o cască în ureche și o broșă în piept. Aude o voce în cască. Dacă vrea să își primească fetița înapoi, trebuie să ucidă 6 oameni. Pe oricine alege ea. I se spune că broșa are o cameră video minusculă și un microfon, deci este monitorizata. Așa că va trece la treabă.
Un parcurs excepțional, îmi doream parcă să nu se mai termine. Nu m-a plictisit o secundă, iar nerăbdarea de a afla vinovatul creștea continuu. Am avut doi suspecți în minte, dar... Doamne, ce final! Complet neașteptat! Una dintre cele mai bune cărți thriller pe care le-am citit.

Ce ai facut Bobita? Wow superba, frumos construita, nu am banuit finalul. Excelent thriller, poate se vor mai traduce si alte volume

Asezati-va comod, cu ceva de baut si de rontait langa voi, dati telefonul pe silent si pregatiti-va, caci nu veti mai lasa cartea in urmatoarele ore din mana. Cred ca avertismentul acesta ar fi fost bun pe coperta, si, chiar si cu el prezent, nu as fi crezut ca romanul acesta ma va tine in suspans si ma va impiedica sa iau pauza inainte de final. L-am citit pe nerasuflate.
Spre rusinea mea, nu auzisem de autor, desi sunt fana a genului. Insa coperta si descrierea m-au atras de la inceput si am simtit ca va fi un roman bun, care imi va ramane in minte mult timp.
Erin e o tanara mama ce se trezeste singura in apartament, cu o durere de cap, intr-un dezastru total, fara fetita ei Georgia in patut. Cineva i-a furat copilul si i-a lasat o brosa agatata de haina cu un dispozitiv de urmarire si o casca in ureche prin care sa tina legatura.
Romanul pleaca de la ideea: Cate vieti valoreaza viata copilului tau? Caci atacatorului ii cere lui Erin un schimb neobisnuit: viata Georgiei pentru viata unei alte persoane.
In acelasi timp, la sectia de politie din oras apare un tanar, zis Albert, pentru ca e pasionat de numere, sa anunte ca si-a ucis mama. Totul e extrem de ciudat si misterios.
Dupa o criza de isterie, Erin ia decizia sa isi salveze fiica si sa porneasca in cautarea unui om nevinovat pe care sa il ucida. Lucrurile insa nu sunt atat de simple, caci dupa prima crima, Elin devine o ucigasa programata. Intreaga actiune a romanului se intinde pe durata a 24 de ore, atat are ca termen Erin sa duca sarcina la bun sfarsit pentru a-si vedea din nou fiica. Actiunea e palpitanta si plina de suspans, insa in acelasi timp infricosatoare. Nu poti sa nu te gandesti cat de departe suntem dispusi sa mergem pentru a salva pe cineva drag, cat de puternica de dragostea unei mame pentru copilul ei. Dar oare atat de puternica incat sa distruga viata altor oameni si sa aiba dreptul de a ucide? A fost ingrozitor sa ma pun in situatia lui Erin si sa incerc sa decid ce e corect. Desi la inceput nu credea ca e capabila de asa ceva si simtea ca este nedrept si inuman, Erin a ajuns sa faca asta fara remuscari, doar consolata de gandul ca fiica ei merita totul. Dincolo de suspansul si misterul dintr-un thriller clasic, construit foarte bine, romanul pune si aceasta problema etica si cred ca asta il face sa fie atat de bun si sa treaca granita unui simplu roman politist.
Finalul te lasa insa fara cuvinte. Eu cel putin am avut nevoie de cateva minute sa ma adun, caci dupa toata nebunia, vine o liniste monumentala si un verdict socant. A fost imprevizibil, tulburator si chiar trist, pentru ca atatea vieti au fost pierdute.
Recomand romanul, e impecabil construit de la intriga si pana la actiune, personaje si deznodamant. Autorul nu a dat gres cu nimic, a pastrat lucrurile simple si in acelasi timp complicate, si s-a jucat cu creierul uman si imensa putere a acestuia.

A fost prima dată când am făcut cunoștință cu David Jackson, dar nu cred că va fi ultima.
Erin este o mamă al cărei copil a fost răpit de un criminal, iar ea este nevoită să comită niște crime în serie ca să-și recupereze fetița. Autorul nu a pus accent pe detectivi, cat a pus accentul pe criminali, iar asta mi-a plăcut mult, a încercat să intre practic în mintea lor.
Avem descrieri sângeroase, dar eu mă împac bine cu ele🤭, victime de tot soiul, cifre. Criminalii le dau bătăi de cap lui Doyle și lui LeBlanc, nu s-ar fi gândit ca ar fi o femeie. Albert nu prea și-a avut rostul, dar în final s-a dovedit a fi un personaj cheie, Doyle chiar așa prost era? 😂
Erin trece prin niște situații de pomină…dă din belele în belele. Suspansul crește cu fiecare pagină, iar ea pare că face o plăcere din a ucide. Dar acel final? A fost cireasa de pe tort. Nu m-aș fi gândit în veci la așa ceva, trăiesc pentru finalurile ingenioase! Este unul dintre cele mai bune thrillere citite anul acesta, me-ri-tă!

I read this review before buying this book:
"Yet again Jackson's literary skills shine through with another fast and accomplished narrative together with impressive dialogue"
And after I was barely able to read 50 pages I was left wondering about the principles and morals of those who writes such reviews, when you write something you first need to believe in it, and secondly it must be true ...
This book was one of the worst I ever bought or read, a story - which can be comfortably told in no more than 20 pages - got dragged and stretched and been given all types of steroids to make it fit into a 286 pages. Pages after pages of boring dialogues, if people started to write every single word which is told or said by everyone around him/her we would end up with a 1000 pages book from each house in the city every single day, a smart talented writer knows what to put in a dialogue and what needs to be omitted, and although I believe that the author is well aware of this he continued stuffing the pages with boring superficial description of things that really does not add any value to the story, combined with more and more boring and very expected dialogues ...
A novel that can be easily turned into a C category hollywood movie, one that costs almost nothing, and would end up with a rating of 3 or 2 on IMDB.

Uh, mi-a plăcut, m-am gândit mai tot timpul ce aș fi făcut eu in locul lui Erin și nu am putut să găsesc vreun răspuns, sper sa nu trebuiască vreodată. De asta e bună cartea asta - pătrunde sub piele, in gânduri, in inimă și apoi te răstoarnă.

A real highpoint of the publishing year for me, is a new addition to David Jackson’s excellent Detective Callum Doyle series. But fear not, gentle (but criminally minded) reader, if you have not sampled the wares of Mr Jackson before, because Cry Baby proves an easy entry point into the pre-existing series, and then you can relish the experience of playing catch-up with the others. Everyone’s a winner…
The book grabs your interest from the get-go with a young mother, Erin Vogel, experiencing the nightmare scenario of the abduction of her baby, Georgia. To add to her general torment, she finds herself under the surveillance, both visual and audio, of the disembodied voice of her daughter’s abductor- a voice commanding her to kill six random strangers before midnight the following day. If she reneges on the deal her baby will die. Jackson ramps up the tension of this twisted mission in spades, as we bear witness to the utter mental and physical turmoil that this produces in Erin, and the fear and indecision she experiences in selecting her victims. Just how can she choose who deserves to die in order for her baby to live? This is not a premise for a story that I have encountered before and Jackson, to his credit, handles it beautifully, speeding up and slowing down Erin’s mission accordingly to keep the tension on a knife edge throughout, and I am revealing nothing more. You are in for a treat…
As I said, this is another book featuring Detective Callum Doyle, a smart-mouthed but commited New York cop, who displays all the quick-wittedness and moral integrity, that we relish in our cop protagonists. He’s not having a great day at the office, when news of these seemingly random killings break, juggling the needs of both this case and the appearance at the station of a man with Rainman abilities professing to have killed his mother. Doyle dubs him Albert, as in Einstein, and the additional narrative that develops from their interactions is both poignant and humorous, providing a sliver of light relief from the moral trials of Erin in the opposing storyline. Jackson, once again demonstrates the mordant and clever wit that his character Doyle is synonomous with, whether he be joshing on with his colleagues, or using his acerbic wit to frustrate his superiors. Its deftly handled and a real shining point of the book.
With the benefit of having read the three previous books, Pariah, The Helper and Marked, I am pleased to say that Cry Baby more than came up to scratch. I enjoyed the very singular and particular focus that this book had on one day in Doyle’s life, with less emphasis on his outside distractions. The plot was perfectly judged, both in content and pace, cut through with humour and a satisfying degree of violence! Oh- and there might be a twist or two along the way. Enjoy!

This is very peculiar book – it kept me reading, but for much of the book I was rather sceptical and unconvinced. It felt a bit contrived and not quite realistic enough. But the later chapters did manage to turn things around and improve my overall impression of Cry Baby. I’m not sure I’d read it again, but it would make a brilliant film.
The novel starts with Erin Vogel awakening after being drugged, and awakening to her worst nightmare: her baby, Georgia, has been taken from their apartment. After her initial panic, Erin realises that someone is talking to her via an earpiece. That unidentified someone has Georgia, and tells Erin how she can get her back: kill someone. I won’t say much more at the risk of spoiling the plot, but this is the ultimate test of what every parent claims – that they’d do anything for their children. Erin faces some horrific decisions, her human morals pitted against her motherly instincts.
The other narrative thread follows Detective Doyle, who is drawn into Erin’s story simply by virtue of being on-duty at the right – or wrong? – time. I think David Jackson has written other novels featuring Detective Doyle, which explains why there’s so much backstory alluded to that doesn’t really add much to Cry Baby. He’s an interesting character, but some of the detail feels a bit superfluous to the actual plot of this book.
The story obviously tries to provoke questions about good and evil, about the relative values of different lives and types of people, and about what right and wrong mean when the life of your child is at stake. It did feel contrived and implausible (I think there are some things you’re more likely to accept from a film than a book, and throughout I felt like this was more suited to the screen than the page), but the twists and turns and revelations towards the end do reward perseverance.
I didn’t warm to the narrative, though. I felt it switched too haphazardly between third-person omniscient accounts of Erin’s thoughts to first-person narration of her thoughts with no punctuation or other signposting. Without having read any other of David Jackson’s novels, I don’t know if this is indicative of his writing or whether it was a deliberate choice for The Cry (I suspect it was), but I found it grating and distracting. I also felt that the very graphic descriptions of violence were a little gratuitous, and at odds with the attempt to be a thought-provoking look at a moral dilemma situation.
So overall, I can’t quite make my mind up about this book. I did find it very readable and hard to put down, but I wouldn’t read it again or read other books by the same author. I don’t think it’s a particularly masterful novel, but the story has some great strengths and would do very well on the big screen.

The story obviously tries to provoke questions about good and evil, about the relative values of different lives and types of people, and about what right and wrong mean when the life of your child is at stake. It did feel contrived and implausible (I think there are some things you’re more likely to accept from a film than a book, and throughout I felt like this was more suited to the screen than the page), but the twists and turns and revelations towards the end do reward perseverance.
I didn’t warm to the narrative, though. I felt it switched too haphazardly between third-person omniscient accounts of Erin’s thoughts to first-person narration of her thoughts with no punctuation or other signposting. Without having read any other of David Jackson’s novels, I don’t know if this is indicative of his writing or whether it was a deliberate choice for The Cry (I suspect it was), but I found it grating and distracting. I also felt that the very graphic descriptions of violence were a little gratuitous, and at odds with the attempt to be a thought-provoking look at a moral dilemma situation.
So overall, I can’t quite make my mind up about this book. I did find it very readable and hard to put down, but I wouldn’t read it again or read other books by the same author. I don’t think it’s a particularly masterful novel, but the story has some great strengths and would do very well on the big screen.

David Jackson is a fairly new author to me.
Quite a few people recommended this book to me and even though it is the fourth book in the Detective Callum Doyle series, it can easily be read as a stand alone.
I haven't read the rest in this series so I am a prime example that it can be read as a stand alone though I certainly will be reading the rest of them.
As a mother, I had total empathy for Erin in the story. To wake up and realise your daughter is missing would have to be the worst feeling in the world. To get her daughter back though, Erin has to make some unimaginable choices.
This is a story that will certainly have readers questioning how far they would go for the ones they love.
Even though I don't know much about Cal's background, I have to say I am very intrigued about his relationship with his work colleague, Le Blanc. It certainly didn't spoil the story for me that I don't know much about him as the way it is written it wasn't an issue as there is very little reference to anything that will have been in the other books in the series.
Cal is very much hitting his head against a brick wall in this book. They have someone in custody that could help them catch the killer but he is getting nowhere. I could very much feel his frustration and the tension that is building.
The story very much focuses on Erin and her attempt to get her daughter back safe and well. This made the story an extremely tense read that had me on the edge of my seat.
Cry Baby should come with a warning as when you start it, the rest of the world just stops. I literally could not get enough and I didn't want to put it down until all my questions had been answered and boy I wasn't disappointed. There are certainly some hair raising moments in there.

Nu am pornit cu așteptări mari, credeam că va fi doar "okayish", dar vai... Conține o poveste așa interesantă și o acțiune antrenantă! Uneori, atmosfera era neliniștitoare și cumva neobișnuită. Și după ce am terminat cartea, mi-am dat seama că se ascunde o anumită profunzime în toată această poveste! ✨
Am fost foarte curioasă cu privire la acțiune și am citit cartea de joi până vineri. Când o mamă se trezește buimacă și vede că fetița ei de câteva luni nu mai e în pătuț, îi vin în minte cele mai groaznice gânduri. Iar când răpitorul ia legătura cu femeia, veți fi șocați cu privire la cerințele lui!
Ce-i drept, la început nu am fost așa de interesată de planul narativ secundar și am intuit, încă din prima jumătate a cărții, "rezolvarea" unei părți din mister, dar romanul are o acțiune graduală și când am văzut cum toate elementele se potrivesc... Oh, ce carte frumoasă! ❤️

Autorul nu ne da timp sa ne obișnuim cu povestea și ne introduce direct în actiune.
Erin se dezmeticeste înspăimântata din somn sau dintr-un leșin și constata ca fetita ei de 6 luni a dispărut.
Aude o voce care ii da indicații și găsește după câteva momente de confuzie o casca în ureche.
Vocea o ghidează spre ce trebuie sa facă pentru a își recupera fata răpită. Acțiunea evoluează însă ciudat din punctul meu de vedere.
Sincer, conversația dintre Erin și rapitorul fiicei ei mi s-a părut patetica.... De multe ori mi-am dat ochii peste cap și m-a pufnit râsul cu gândul serios de a abandona cartea.
M-a ținut prinsa un alt plan, în care apare detectivul Doyle și un tip ciudat, care se autodenunța la poliție (pentru o crima) cu numele de Albert.... Pentru ca e fan Albert Einstein. Obsesia omului pentru numerele prime și pentru detalii ciudate mi-a dat bătăi de cap și m-a ținut curioasa până la final când totul are sens... Chiar și discuția aberantă dintre Erin și vocea care ii da ordine.
De asemenea, detectivul Callum Doyle mi-a fost simpatic încă de la început. Voi citi și celelalte cărți ale seriei.

Daca vreți o carte care să vă țină in suspans pe tot parcursul lecturii, și din când in când să mai aveți si piele de găină - asta e.
Erin se trezește in apartamentul ei dupa ce a fost atacată, bebelușa ei de 6 luni lipsește iar in ureche are o casca, la haină broșa cu camera video prin care poate comunica cu barbatul care i-a furat bebelusul. Acesta îi spune ca îi va da fetița inapoi dacă omoară niște oameni. Aceasta are de ales între fetița ei și viețile unor necunoscuți. Bună de tot cartea 😊

Am citit cartea aceasta la recomandarea Andreei de la @books.are.from.heaven, fiind o super împătimită a thrillerelor. A durat ceva până să mă apuc de ea, deoarece nu sunt chiar fana thrillerelor în engleză. Probabil mai durează până să mă acomodez.

Din păcate, cartea asta nu a funcționat DELOC pentru mine, iar motivele cred că sunt diverse. În primul rând, faptul că am citit-o în engleză. Cred într-o oarecare măsură că dacă o citeam în română ar fi fost puțin diferită situația (tradusă “Plânset de copil”, dar din păcate nu prea se mai găsește).

În al doilea rând, subiectul. Tot ce ține de copii e un “no no” from me, dar câteodată mai fac și excepții. O lectură asemănătoare cu cea de față mi s-a părut “Lanțul” (care pe mine personal m-a dezamăgit de la jumătate în colo, a devenit foarte previzibilă). Nu pot să cred că zic asta, dar “Lanțul” mi-a plăcut mai mult ca și idee principală.🫠 Aici totul mi s-a părut foarte dezorganizat și prost construit.

I'm not usually a fan of detective based novems but *THIS* was a goooooood book.
Erin - mother to six month old Georgia - wakes up late one evening after she appears to have been drugged and finds her baby has disappeared. After a few frantic moments, she discovers an ear piece with a man at the other end telling her exactly what she needs to do to get her baby back - Kill.
This was super thrilling and fast paced read and I enjoyed it thoroughly... and that ending? I didn't expect that at all, it didn't even cross my mind which makes for a fantastic twist.

It's a poorly written weak story that left me bored and irritated for losing my time reading it. The novel is cathegorized as a thriller but I didn't feel any whatsoever.

It was a fast-paced reading. The plot was well imagined and it was just near the end when I had a feeling of what could be the end. The characters were well developed. During the lecture I couldn't stop myself wondering what happend, who was the kidnapper, what was - if there - the link between Albert and the main story. I felt someway there was no link, other than Albert's role helping Cal to understand the events.
I really liked the story. And I felt so bad for Erin and her daughter, but also for the lives wasted...

Thrillerul a fost de-a dreptul exceptional. Am empatizat cu Erin si cu Albert, eram groaznic de curios sa aflu cine e vocea - incepusem sa suspectez si politistii desi suspectul principal era Clark. Mi s-a parut absolut genial finalul cu Erin fiind, de fapt,, vocea cauzata de problemele ei psihice din cauza mortii fetitei ei dar realizez acum ca dupa a 5a crima incerca sa se resemneze cu moartea ei din urma cu 6 luni. Nu am putut sa nu fiu trist pentru pierderea ei. A fost heartbreaking asa. totusi are 5 stele 100%.

I walk into this with low expectations and I was pretty right. The premise was not bad and plot twist in the end was executed well, I liked the ending in general. But the middle was unnecessarily dragged, most od the scenes in the police station led to nowhere. Boring dialogue. The narrator for FMC read her lines too fast, I guess to show how frantic she was, but it ended up being annoying. It was ok story to listen while doing chores, nothing to write home about.

This was very disappointing. I hate to read a book that doesn't go anywhere and stops abruptly without a proper ending. I definitely won't be reading any more of this series or this author.

Pe de altă parte, este prezentat un bărbat cu evidente afecțiuni psihice, care se prezintă la secția de poliție și declară că și-a omorât mama. Refuză să își dezvăluie numele real și adresa, și se prezintă drept Albert. Este fascinat, obsedat de cifre. Este luat în grija de Callum Doyle, detectivul care se va ocupa de cele două cazuri.
Care este legătura între cele două cazuri?
Tot timpul lecturii, m-am gândit cine poate fi bărbatul din spatele vocii care îi dictează lui Erin câți oameni trebuie să mai omoare. Erin devine, cu fiecare crimă, un asasin profesionist, în ultimă fază nici nu mai are nevoie de motivație pentru a-și alege victima (primelor victime le-a găsit cusur). M-am tot întrebat dacă nu am trecut cu vederea peste ceva ce ar fi putut fi important. E un singur indiciu în carte și nici acela concludent. Finalul vine peste tine și te scutură bine de tot, demonstrând, încă o dată, ideea conform căreia nimic nu e ceea ce pare.
Pentru mine, a fost o carte foarte bine construită, de la intrigă, la acțiune și până la personaje. Genul care te face să gândești, care îți răscolește profunzimile și te invită la instrospecție. Totul îți este explicat la final printr-o frază, care dă cu tine de pământ. Scrisă cursiv, dinamic, se citește repede, se digeră... greuț. Rămâi mult timp în cap cu povestea.

As both a reader and a writer, I hate so-called ‘spoilers’ in reviews. I like to be surprised as a book’s plot unfolds, to not know what will happen next. So although I adored Cry Baby (it was one of my favourite reads in 2014) I’m finding it hard to write about. The challenge is to say enough to make people want to read this crime thriller, while not revealing too much of its totally original storyline.
This is David Jackson’s fourth novel featuring New York detective Callum Doyle, but it’s also a departure from the rest of the series. Although Doyle is still a main character, the book’s focus is on young mother Erin Vogel, who wakes to find her baby daughter Georgia has been abducted. As she struggles to take in what has happened, Erin realises she is wearing an earpiece, through which a stranger tells her he has Georgia and will only give her back if Erin carries out a dreadful task: “I want you to kill someone”. Meanwhile, Detective Doyle is working a quiet night shift when a nameless man is brought in for claiming to have killed his own mother. These two plot-lines intersect eventually, but in a wholly unexpected way.
Cry Baby is a departure for the author who, despite writing convincingly about crime in New York, is a university lecturer in Liverpool. His earlier books have been compared favourably with the work of Harlan Coben and are fast-moving and action-packed, but his latest has a stronger psychological side to it. Erin’s response to the horrific situation she finds herself in makes for an exciting read, but the depiction of the emotional turmoil steering her increasingly desperate behaviour is rarely found in thrillers. This novel works well as a standalone, but after reading it, you’re likely to want read the other Doyle books too.
