My niece and I began reading these together when she was 6. Three years later, now she reads Lumberjanes on her own, without me, but for this special last adventure the kiddo asked me to read it to her. I was crying so hard that by the end my niece read the final pages to me. It's been wonderful to read this series for so many reasons. I will truly miss the Roanoke Cabin. FRIENDSHIP TO THE MAX!

This was cute. And perfectly awesome, if we're talking a Regular Janes Adventure.

But for a Grand Finale to the Whole Series?

Hmmm... I suppose I expected more. True, there were fun callbacks to previous Lumberjane stories. And true, most, if not all, the critters, beasties, and mythological characters we've met in past volumes at least made cameos. But overall? It seemed the authors/artists were more focused Easter Egg Inclusion than crafting a worthy Series Finale. The story seemed rushed, the ending was anticlimactic, and there were more than a few wtf moments that did not add to the story and, tbh, just didn't make any sense (). The Bad Guy was defeated much too easily and the whole thing was over entirely too quickly. But at least we have confirmation that .

The story had its moments, but for an eagerly-anticipated End Game to a series I've been following for more than 5 years... I am disappointed.

Summer is over, and so is this final collected volume of the main series. Naturally there will always be more side stories, one-shots, spin-offs and such in this shared sandbox universe.

The story has the feel of something written by committee, which it was. The artwork was also done by committee. The story is epic in design, but not in feel. Such is life.

An appropriate "getting-the-band-together" end to such a fun series!

Well, it’s the end of the series. It’s odd to be here with it finally over after having read this many books from the original “Lumberjanes” collection. It was nice to go on one final adventure with April, Jo, Mal, Molly, and Ripley. It was also really nice (and fun) to have so many old characters come back from other storylines that happened in the books before.

However, with that being said now, I have to admit that I was really underwhelmed with how this book ended up turning out and overall disappointed. To begin with my review, I didn’t feel like the story was really there in general. It was interesting what was happening to the camp and how the girls were going to stop it, but, at a lot of different parts, I found my mind wandering because I was bored and not much was happening. It was the same “what are we going to do!“ throughout the entire book with little solutions and ideas being worked out. I sort of felt like uncharacteristically that the girls were just tapped out and helpless as to what they had planned, which felt completely unlike them after the array of books we’ve prior about them.
Furthermore, I had a lot of issues with some of the scenes, dialogue, etc. within the graphic novel. It felt like characters would be having a conversation and something would skip or be missing from the discussion, making me a little lost and confused with how unnatural people and things just generally felt. I also had felt like this at the end of the last book to before this one where, in the final pages of that one, things just felt completely rushed and (like this one) it did not feel like some of the previous books had in the way they just told the story. I don’t understand what went on from the end of the last book to this one. Where they limited in panels and boards in what they had to say and how they had to say it?
Lastly, my biggest critique of this final story was that things still didn’t get explained in the way that I was hoping they would about the forest, it’s abilities (and how that occurred), it’s connection to Greek mythology, dinosaurs, different dimensions. How did Nellie turn in to a bear and why? How Molly able to in this book? And if Diane can’t teleport, while He’s is with her… What happened to when Hes’ parents came to get their child that was no longer there? Just completely vanished on the premises of this summer camp?

I wanted answers and, in general, I just wanted more from this LAST book in the series. Like, really? This is how we’ve ended? I was also hoping for some sappy, sentimental thing from all the girls about their time there together (especially when the time of the camp is so different from the real world [slower] - another question that never got answered as to why that was the case) and, in the end, it really didn’t seem like anyone was affected or cared too much. There was no real goodbye really or tears that took place, no sweet softness that pulled at your heart strings… For me, personally, this was just upsetting for me as a reader. Don’t you think, at the end of the day, the heart of the piece and how it makes you feel (and think)… What it evokes from you, is what matters most of all when it comes to books (or art in general [movies, TV shows, music])? This, after all we had been through with these characters, evoked nothing from me and I felt nothing for what was going on in its final storyline pages except for what happened with Molly and Bubbles. I would have been more interested in a better, well - developed, and meaningful story between the girls in this book too rather the short 3-4 page one off stories that were populated at the end of the edition that just existed for some reason (and why did they???). Those did nothing for me, really. I liked the one about the well the girls were trying to fill up, Bubbles being lost, and then looking at constellations, but had it been those stories versus the main one… Well, I’d work on improving the main one more than those, personally. Telling something more fully and fruitfully for the reader so they were actually taking something from the whole experience. I wanted a good taste left in my mouth from this and, ending on this note, left me in a sour one unfortunately. I would give this book a two out of five stars honestly, but three stars simply seems nicer especially since it’s also a fair assertion of the series overall in my mind. Two stars would not do the “Lumberjanes” series justice collectively, but I think three stars instead sort of does. Some of the books were amazing whereas others did absolutely nothing for me. It could be a hit or miss and with those two things pinging between throughout the series, I think three stars as a whole is a fair assertion as an average of what you might come to expect. I liked reading it, but was it worth all the time and effort I put in for the amount of books that exist (and the more that still do in prequels and spin - offs)… I honestly don’t know. That’s just a choice every reader will have to end up making for themselves, on their own.

I will always love these characters and the experiences they had, but this final volume was a hot mess of confusion. They tried to do too much with all of the characters that have ever been in the comic AND put them all in grave peril. As a result, our time with the core characters was watered down and disappointing. All they had to do to end the summer right was to sit around a fire and just hang out with all of their friends reminiscing with just a few hijinks thrown in for good measure. Oh well. Endings are not the point. It's how you get there.

I'm torn. I loved that they brought back pretty much everyone for this final volume, but somehow the story part just felt rushed. As a whole though, this is definitely a five star series.

4.5 stars, there's a couple things I wish I had an answer to, but otherwise it was a great way to end the series. <3

Lumberjanes started strong, got very hit or miss in the middle, and ended dissapointedngly. I liked the cast and concept enough to stay with it. I probably should have stopped at Time After Crime. Though I can't say if I am glad I read the whole thing.

WARNING: I go off

Lumberjanes I think needed less volumes, as it doesn't use them effectively. They could use the time to flesh out the characters, which the various writers ocassionaly show that they are capable of doing. The characters are fun enough, but could really benefit from a few arcs, especially since it was 20 volumes. Molly is the closest to having an arc but it didn't conclude with much satisfaction. And her relationship with Mal was just really bland, it was cute, but not expanded enough on. And Jo being trans, as a trans man I really wished they explored more of that. It's barely brought up I feel, I think it's more of having diverse characters and not making them explain themselves, it's just how they are. Which I understand but this is a kid's comic, it might be helpful for some questioning folks for her arc to be expanded on.

The story for this volume was just kinda forgettable, it wasn't anything too special at all. At least they brought back almost every single character and alot of plot elements. But really it just feels empty, to make the comic feel worthwhile, almost emotional manipulation. It doesn't feel earned.

The ending is also just bare bones, it's way too safe. 20 volumes of Lumberjanes for the most unsatisfactory ending.

I did like the bonus comics, they're pretty cute. But it's a bit frustrating because it shows how great Lumberjanes can be. It can be heartfelt and something really special. And these were only a few pages. Most Lumberjanes stories took up the whole volume.

Also another rant, the art after the first few volumes never was good, it felt so cheap. I'm a fledgling comic artist myself, so I know making comics can be hell. But Lumberjanes was pretty popular, they could have put more time into it.

Not to dog on a kid's comic, but since Lumberjanes is so beloved apparently, I gotta complain a bit. Lumberjanes is by no means terrible, it's just really dissapointing. I'd reccomend Backstagers, essentially Lumberjanes but boys. It's only 3 volumes and is very good.

SPOILERS:

They basically just leave. Say goodbye, I'll miss you, etc. The last panel with Molly and Bubbles tries to do an emotional last panel, but it really fails. And Molly and Mal were dating! Come on, give them some more closure? Even if they will probably talk to each other still, it's not like camp, they don't get to see eachother everyday. The ending is just really bad, maybe of an epilouge of all the Roanokes after camp, something.

Edit: After like what two years I decided to lower the rating to a two. I mean seriously all those volumes, and this ending feels so empty and emotionless. The series even though I spent months reading it largely dissipated from my memory most of the time. In the end the adventures they went on just feel hollow and meaningless.

Last volume of the Lumberjanes.

I can't believe all the time since I started reading this comic.

An evil force advances through the forest so all the creatures are in trouble and the Lumberjanes must join to stop this thing from spreading.

Nice closure to the series.

“You’re not the person you were when you started, and you’ll
never be again. You’re like a tree… You’ve grown.
There are a few more rings inside of your heart.

You’ve made mistakes, and you’ve learned to apologize for
them. You’ve loved, and lost those you’ve loved
You’re a stronger trunk to lean on.”

While I'm sad these are over, I get why they have to be. I already was losing interest in the series and this one didn't really do it for me. I get why they felt the need to spend so much time bringing back all the side characters (I personally would have rioted if Diane wasn't in this, I'm OBSESSED) but it really took away from what could have been a heartfelt goodbye to the main squad.

Also, Molly fans get closure. Molly's always been my least favourite though so maybe I'm just jealous.

Wow - this was an incredible and fitting conclusion to an amazing series. The Lumberjanes books have always been a place I could go to cheer up, ground myself, and be inspired by the brave, wacky, and fun girls of the Roanoke cabin. I highly recommend this series to adventurers of any age, and these books tie together so many great themes and lessons that always find the mark. I think there's a story in here for everyone! Friendship to the max!

I read every issue of Lumberjanes in the last few weeks, so this is more of a cumulative review than a review of the last volume (which was probably three stars on its own). I'm glad for the enduring popularity of this series, and it was a really fun thing to read at work in midsummer. It made me want to play outside and draw and all that good stuff, though in my opinion the middle volumes (5-15ish) are the best; it's finding its footing in the beginning and then loses some of its pep in the end. Even so, I love that kids are into it and I had a lot of fun.

For its entire run, Lumberjanes has been about female friendship, kindness, character growth and adventure, while also being inclusive of enbies and trans Lumberjanes. It's been such a fun and great series and I am very sad to see it end so abruptly.

Loved this series of mythical adventures and adolescent friendships all the way through, and this was a great farewell to the Lumberjanes. This is an excellent young adult or middle grade series that promotes positive values such as inclusion, resilience, communication, teamwork, etc.

This is a collective review for the entire Lumberjanes series.

I’ve been wanting to do a complete Lumberjanes read-through ever since I bought the first TPB at the New York ComiCon, back when the series first started. My son and I had just finished reading Namona together, and I was a big Noelle Stevenson fan on the back of that, so Lumberjanes was an obvious choice for what to read next. I read the first few volumes, and then let it sit for a few years as the series ran its course. Now, I have the chance to go back and take it all in as a single, extended reading. So what’s the verdict?

Lumberjanes is a magnificent comic property. Even if it doesn’t speak to you directly (and it doesn’t always speak that strongly to me), the truth is that a book with this much heart, accessibility, respect for each others’ differences, love for a good yarn, and investment in its own characters is a book worth everyone’s notice.

The story involves a very long and unusual summer for a gang of young women at a summer camp where mythical beasts roams and time works at its own pace. It is full of both epic danger and mundane camp stuff, where we might see our heroines fighting a creature from Greek myth one volume, and play a board game of their own making in another. For them, this time-warping summer camp experience is an extended exercise in facing the many challenges of burgeoning adulthood, where growing together matters more than growing up.

Throughout the Lumberjanes is a strong commitment to representation, and this book really delivers there. Just about every reader can easily see themselves in Lumberjanes, which is a feature, not a bug. Even though the stories themselves can hit a kind of rut without any real stakes or advancement of characters or meta-plot (this was especially the case once Stevenson moved off the book), the fact remains that this is a story that provides a much-needed presence in the world of graphic storytelling. You’re not going to find many books this overwhelmingly positive, especially to any dimension of diversity within the audience, and in a comics scene that so often meets diversity kicking and screaming, Lumberjanes' steadfast embrace of our differences really matters. There are more than a few books that feel cut from the Lumberjanes cloth nowadays, but one imagines they wouldn’t be around if not for Lumberjanes themselves. And you know what? We’re all better for it. Whether you like this book or not, you must respect it, and that is no small thing.
