⭐⭐⭐⭐

Graphic novels usually are not my thing, but I like to step out of my comfort zone occasionally. Plus, I really enjoy R.L Stine. He is a nostalgic author for me as I used to read his books (and watch the shows) as a kid. This was a quick, fun read. In many ways, it reminded me of an episode of Scooby Doo (my favorite cartoon of all time). The graphics were well done. The plot was suitably spooky. I can see this being a hit with the middle grade graphic novel loving crowd.

So I've read pretty much all of the Just Beyond graphic novel series. This is the best one in the series, but I still found it off.

I felt like the only character with any sense was made to look bad because they were questioning the actual events that were happening.

I did like the horror, thriller, mystery aspect better in this one, but I didn't feel like we got enough of an explanation. Also, this is supposed to be for a middle-grade audience but I felt that it was too simplistic in the writing and story.

I will say that because these remind me a bit of the Twilight Zone, I am intrigued to watch the show.

Thank you to the publisher and Netgalley for providing the E-ARC in exchange for an honest review.

This was probably my favorite of the "Just Beyond" graphic novels, but overall I was very disappointed in the series. The art fit all of the stories well, but the stories just didn't work. I read (and write) a lot of dark horror so I like to read some lighter material like this from time to time for a break, but this series didn't fit the bill. I hope the younger readers enjoyed the series more, since they were the target audience after all.

Personally I didn’t love it nor hate it. I felt it was just okay. I prefer R.L. Stein’s novels more but I think this would be a great graphic novel for middle-grade audiences!

Any RL Stine book at this point will win me over. No questions asked. My kids and I loved diving into this one, and it took my husband and I back to being kids reading scary Goosebump stories. Great thrills and just the right amount of spookiness.

I have been reading R.L. Stine since I was a little kid and I'm still reading his stories. He certainly does not disappoint in this middle-grade graphic novel. The illustrations in this book are wonderful and Stine does a fabulous job at combining elements of horror and mystery.
I want to thank NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.

I haven't read very many graphic novels, I wanted to give this one a try because the story was by R.L. Stine. I really enjoyed it. It was a quick read and easy to follow. The plot was not super creative, it reminded me of a Scooby Doo mystery in a lot of ways. But the details of the setting were absolutely great, the old movie set and the super cool vintage movie monsters. I thought the artwork was really well done. I think this would appeal to any fan of horror, especially monster movies, from middle grades on up. I'm looking forward to reading more books from this series. Thank you to Netgalley and Boom! Studios for providing me with a temporary e-galley.

It’s time to wrap up Stine’s Just Beyond Graphic Novel series. So far, Scare School and Beast Island were fun with cool artwork but felt a bit lacking in the story area. Horror at Happy Landings was solid, being refreshing and oddly nice.

In our final one we have Monstrocity. Ruthie and Ezra's dad and his brother have bought an old horror movie studio. They were big in the 50's but shut down after some accidents. He wants to bring it back to its former glory and make classic monster movies.

However, accidents start to happen and they discover some rather dangerous deactivated animatronic monsters…

This was good, if on the mild side. The Art by Irene Flores is good, with some cool monsters but it is basic compared to the pervious artist. Doesn't push the backgrounds or creepy stuff as much.  The artist still adds in diversity at least.

Stine had gotten the hang of the comic format by now but he goes back to struggling a bit here. Every page has at least one word Balloon and it gets distracting. He forgot this is a visual medium again.

There's a couple things that don't get fully explained or don't go anywhere although it's not too bad. The kids a re basic and Ezra is a bit annoying. There's bigger focus on others so they can get a bit lost until the climax.

Otherwise, this feels like a better version of things like Shock Street or really all his movie ones. My good makes it easily his best movie one alongside Zombie Town's book I guess.

There's a clear explanation with a coop backstory and we get fun stuff with animatronics, like Shock Street. It's clean and builds well enough. It focuses more on the accidents so it takes too long to have the monster action but it still has enough going on.

I like the conflict with dad and uncle, and hey the parent is heavily involved! Although we don't get a wrap-up with that conflict.

The reveal of who is behind the accidents works and the red herrings are decent. Twist is a bit forced but passable.

It doesn't do anything amazing but the story is built well and enjoyable. Has that fun movie set setting working for it as well.

That's about it, fairly simple, really. Overall, Just Beyond was fine. Stine's first real conic work, Man Thing, was rough to say the least as he didn't seem to take it seriously.

These are notably as there are more in his wheel house and he clearly actually tried lol. Happy Landings is the best for having something in truly refreshing and putting in more substance than his usual work.

I'm surprised we got that from him. The rest are fine and have some fresh aspects but are mostly standard. He's set in his ways so mostly no pushing the horror or themes or anything like that. Stuff of Nightmares has that at least.

Kinda like current Goosebumps book stuff, it is mostly standard with some solid fun stuff in there at times. It's interesting to compare these to kid horror comics from one's with more of a vision, like that one I did recently or even the Goosebumps comic stuff. Those fare better but Stine has improved.

I feel like I got off track and got neaner than I intended lol. Anyway this one is good, just nothing crazy. Oh and he's got Graveyard Club coming up, hope that's good.

IDK about the next read, got stuff on the plate so hopefully should cross that off. See ya then.

1st Line: "'Wow!'"

Prose (Story): Book two in this graphic novel series by beloved suspense/horror writer R. L. Stine finds a pair of brothers who buy an old horror movie studio in Los Angeles, in order to resurrect some classic cinematic monsters, a bit over their heads when it seems said monsters never left the lot in the first place!

Don's (Review): This is my introduction to Stine's graphic novel series, and I was drawn immediately to the idea of a story showcasing the kind of cheesy monster movies from a bygone era that I loved on TV as a kid. Sure enough, with the help of a little backstory, readers are clued in pretty quickly that the re-opening of Monstrosity Studios helps to awaken some very real monsters from its past archives to life again - making Ruthie and Ezra, a brother and sister whose father is one of the new owners, ideal targets for Wolfenscreem, The Lagoonatics, and more. Mysterious accidents begin to shut down each new production the studio undertakes, threatening to bankrupt the new owners even as it turns them into bickering brothers, so ultimately it falls to the kids, Ruthie and Ezra, to uncover exactly what's going on and how to stop it, before someone gets killed. A lot of suspension of belief is required here, but then with the subject matter (resurrecting a grade-B monster films studio) you'd have to expect that - but the gung-ho, perky kids and diabolical (complete with maniacal laugh) villain and movie lot monsters make for a fast-paced, suspenseful story brought to absolute pefect life by Irene Flores's art; each full-color page is a throwback to old-school comics of the 1950's, perfectly suiting the monster-movie storyline. Hope the rest in this series are just as good, since they're now on my TBR as well (p.s. I wanna see a REAL Lagoonatics film next, thank you)! 4/5 stars

*ARC provided via NetGalley. Below is my NetGalley review:

4 stars from me = I really liked it. I did not develop a fondness / love for graphic novels until I was well into adulthood, but my taste is very specific - typically the GNs by Neil Gaiman and Joe Hill. I was absolutely thrilled, JUST BEYOND thrilled, if you will, when I saw that R.L. Stine has a new graphic novel being published the 26th of this month.

R.L. Stine's numerous books made up at least a full quarter of my childhood. I remember Mum taking me to the bookstore where I'd select two or three Goosebumps books, and she'd gently remind me to not read them all in one day. I read Just Beyond: Monstrosity in two sittings just because I remembered the plea to not read all of my Stine material in one day (:

The writing in this tale brought me straight back to growing up in the 90s where I craved all the Goosebumps, all the Fear Street, and all the episodes of Are You Afraid of the Dark? A solid 3.5 for the writing and artwork - I just love the subdued colors used in this spooky story! The other .5 of a star is for nostalgia and pure joy alone.

As an adult, this graphic novel did not scare me, but I can see where it may creep out a young child depending on their sensitivities to creepy, spooky, and horror.

Monstrosity is the latest book in RL Stine's graphic novel series Just Beyond. Each book tells a stand alone story. Monstrosity follows Ezra and Ruthie Dillon who's father and uncle have bought an old Horror Movie Studio and plan on making films using the old horror movie creatures.

As this is an RL Stine story you can probably guess what happens next.

The good news is that all the classic ingredients of a RL Stine story are there, plucky teenagers, one of whom is obsessed with the old horror movies, a nice group of old school horror movies and some good action/horror sequences. I read this book in one sitting and did enjoy it. I found the majority of the characters to be good, making believable actions and I cared about what happened to the main two characters in particular. The monsters were variations on real life old school horror movie monsters so there was that nice nostalgia feeling when they popped up.

Two brothers purchase an old horror film house. One of the brother's children are excited for the new adventure. Ezra a horror movie fanatic and his sister Ruthie explore the different sets with Poe.

Everything seems fine till they resume acting scenes and Ruthie is injured along with the director.

The brothers are suspicious, Ezra and Ruthie are spooked by the scary things happening in the film house.

This comic book is short and exciting. I really love the art and graphic style used by the illustrator. The dialogue boxes are clear and the words are easy to read

Middle graders will definitely enjoy this thriller comic. While trying to uncover the truth about the accidents and awakening of the monsters. They'll find themselves enjoying the young Characters, Ezra and Ruthie because they'll find they share the same curiosity.

Thank you for this advanced reader's copy.

¡Genial!

Two children are hyped when their father and their uncle buy and old horror movie studio with all the sets they know from the silver screen and are allowed to explore freely. But then, weird things start happening.

This is pretty straightforward and predictable, but since I read tons of R.L. Stine books in my teens, I was prepared for that. I got exactly what I wanted, and if you were to add a goofy dog, this would feel very, very much like Scooby Doo.

At the end, there were two short stories/excerpts from other graphic novels, and somehow I found I liked them more than the main event, probably because the main plot was so predictable and I'd already spend some time with the author's works.

I liked the illustrations a lot and would read more by the author and also by the illustrator.

Having read a few from this series now, I’m not sure the RL Stine brand of middle reader horror really translates all that well into graphic novel format, but the book moves well enough and probably appeals better to the intended demographic than it did to this adult reader.

The art is actually pretty good, subject appropriate and pleasantly rendered, and the story was an enjoyable one in theory even though it was thin and predictable in the end.

The dialogue is pretty ham-fisted and clunky, which I’ve realized is pretty much how all RL Stine dialogue works. It’s just that we don’t notice it as much in the novels because they employ an above average sense of atmosphere.

Said atmosphere was unfortunately absent here in the graphic novel, leaving it without the best of what Stine does.

I am finally getting on board the R L Stine express having loved the Fear Street Trilogy on Netflix and enjoying the new Disney+ series. I have never read Stines but I am totally on aboard to dive into his written work but find it a bit daunting as he has the output that would make Stephen King pale in comparison.

When this became available, I delved in and although it is a graphic novel, I loved the story and the illustrations. The characters and plots are fun and intriguing and enough twists and turns to keep the hardened cynic like myself engaged but didn’t give me an overall sense of Stine’s writing style due to format. It did give a glimpse into what a great storyteller he is though overall.

Great illustrations, love the story and I’m more intrigued by Stine that before. Recommend it.

Just Beyond: Monstrosity Review!

Thank you so much BOOM! Studios and Netgalley for this ebook in exchange for an honest review! Just Beyond: Monstrosity is out now!

I read my very first R. L. Stine book this year and have read several more following and I really enjoyed them, so I was very excited to read this one! I’m not sure if I missed it or everyone knows but me, but I didn’t realize this was a graphic novel until I opened up the download on my phone! Not that I have anything against graphic novels, I actually just read my first one this year as well, it just took me by surprise! Just Beyond: Monstrosity was a 3/5 stars for me! I think it would have been more if I hadn’t been surprised about the graphic novel part. I thought that the story was super cute and the pictures were very fun! The ending wasn’t really for me and I thought that this was such a quick read, I needed a little bit more!

Synopsis: Ruthie and Ezra’s dad and his brother just bought an old film studio known for their old school horror flicks. The kids couldn’t be more excited, they’ve seen every horror movie filmed in the studio. The kids are so excited to start filming new horror movies and even be in them! That is, until the old props turn out to be the real monsters and they are mad.

Have you read any other Just Beyonds?!

An interesting take on the nature of pulpy horror, where several young children investigate the B movie monsters that are seeming to come back to life after their parents buy an old theatre. True to the type of film these monsters were often found in, the story is a little obvious in places, and there were points where the introduction of "Magic" were possibly conflated with technology, but the ending showed that there was more to the eye than seemed to be originally going on.

Enjoyable read, very reminiscent of older horror films.

3.5 rounded up to 4 stars. I received this ARC from NetGalley.

Fun graphic novel read. There were a few little moments that were very typical RL Stine and elicited a laugh from me. Such as a battery going dead. I appreciated the art. Especially the pages with panels in the same color scheme to fit the mood. It’s a little bit campy of a story but that’s exactly what I expected and wanted from this author.

I was so excited when I saw this one pop up on Netgalley! I am a lifelong R.L. Stine fan and can't wait to share the books with my kids when I hopefully have them one day.
I always really enjoy the books when I pick them up, even some of the ones I read as a young child and I am reading them again. Just Beyond: Monstrosity was just the same, I enjoyed it so much. I always love a graphic novel but pairing that with the spooky storytelling styles of Stine made it that much more enjoyable.

R.L. Stine brings the creepy with this story about two kids whose father and uncle buy a movie studio that cranked out horror B-movies in the past. Suspicious accidents and a mysterious amulet found under the floorboards of a studio office lead the kids into investigating what's going on, leading to some red herrings, dangerous hi-jinks, and a Scooby Doo-style reveal at the end. Fans of Stine's Goosebumps series should enjoy this, it was fun!

Goosebumps meets Alfred Hitchcock meets Scooby Doo meets family drama. A fun story of a brother and sister who's father and uncle have purchased an old horror movie studio. But strange occurrences are happening. A mixture of realism and magic, this graphic novel is fun, but Stine kept hinting at the problems that happened "back in the day" but that are not explored. I could see this as either an animated 30 minute episode TV series or a live action Nickelodeon TV series.

R. L. Stone still has it when it comes to middle grade horror! I thought this was a fast and easy read with an interesting plot. The timing seems a little bit off. I don’t remember where I came across this book but I put a hold on it at the library bc RL Stine was one of my fav authors growing up.

I’m not huge into Graphic Novels but I actually enjoyed this one. Was a quick read and brought back some memories of reading RL Stines books over 20 years ago.

Apparently there is a Disney show of this. I may check it out.
