Shy’s leadership trials continue as she and Ai fight Mai within the black sphere. Lady Black ends up contributing to the yuri factor, while Stardust turns out to be more fallible than originally advertised.

Nothing has changed here - this is kind of a nonsense story that is just the usual shonen fights with a superhero glaze. I think I say that every time, largely to remind myself why this annoys me.

It’s operating a little more magical girl, after a fashion, but it’s not wrong to say that this is playing fast and loose with its concept. These people have roughly zero concern about their secret identities, for example.

And I also say how much I like the characters, which I do, but this story they’re stuck in is entirely too earnest and without the slightest hint of nuance. It is elevated by manga’s tendency to actually let people get hurt, so there’s at least an illusion of stakes, but this entertains and not much more.

Everybody’s powers are so hopelessly vague that no fights mean much of anything because who the heck knows what these people can do and whatever they can do is so off the charts that it’s kind of pointless.

The Ai and Mai fight at the end in particular goes in such an incredibly stupid direction that it really takes the biscuit in a pantry that was down to the crumbs anyway. What happens makes exactly no sense, but will at least amuse the furries reading.

Stigma continues to be a bratty whinger who looks like he needs a spanking rather than a cadre of superheroes to fend him off and this series’ endless prattle about hearts is so wildly dumb that it undermines a generally decent message about being nice and having faith.

Teru remains the heart of a series that kind of doesn’t deserve her at this point. They also have some fun yuri baiting when Lady Black gets manipulated and gets waaaaay into Teru before she regains her dignity. It’s a pretty funny change of pace from her usual tsundere nature.

And Stardust is on hand to be brought low and nearly defeated. This part of Stigma’s plan actually makes the most sense, although how it translates into what he aims to achieve does not; it essentially boils down to ‘it’ll work this way because I say it will and just trust me’.

I don’t want to say this isn’t dumb fun, because it is, and I will score it as such because I enjoyed it as such. But this volume doesn’t have much to offer by way of interesting nuance or particularly interesting conversation.

Yeah, okay, Shy comes through at the end for a big moment that’s very cool, but it’s nothing a hundred other series haven’t been doing for years and I don’t think this one is anything special in that department.

Basically, if you want a super hero manga, you should really be giving My Hero Academia a look. If you need another one with a lamer writing, but a better (for me, anyway) main character, you have Shy.

3 stars - frustratingly enjoyable and, after a fashion, enjoyably frustrating. I won’t say it’s the best thing ever, but it does fill an action-shaped hole in my reading list better than most.

It’s really hard to rate these when I’m speeding through them as chapters and I have literally no idea what chapters each volume collects 😭
