Rate this book
Elise Wright loves her Great Lakes life onboard her father's ship, the Mary Elise. As cook, Elise can keep an eye on her father and the grief he bears, fulfilling a promise to her late mother. But in doing so, she may forfeit love and a family of her own.

Trying to forget his own guilt over a wrong decision while captaining another ship, Nick Clark hires on as the Mary Elise's first mate, quickly bonding with the attractive cook over their common struggles.

When a rough new sailor makes an inappropriate pass at Elise, her father believes it was a misunderstanding and offers a second chance. But other odd behavior raises Nick's suspicions. Just as clues to the sailor's unsavory past start to stack up, an even more immediate danger swells up around them. Forced to confront their greatest fears, Nick and Elise will have to rely on their faith and each other to see them through.

I decided to try a new program at our library and requested a book bundle, filling out a form about genres and authors I liked. Waiting for Love was chosen for me by the library staff and boy did they do great! Tracie Peterson is a new to me author but this book was right up my ally. A Christian fiction romance about faith and forgiving yourself. I loved the main characters of Nick and Elise and the loving relationship Elise had with her father.

Elise is a cook on her fathers ship and promises to help take care of him after the death of her mother. This promise gets complicated as she finds herself growing to love the ships first mate Nick. There is a bit of a mystery to this book too. I thoroughly enjoyed turning the pages and found myself a little surprised at the end. I haven’t read the other two in the series but this one can stand on its own. Such a great read!

This was my least book in this series. It dealt heavily with sailing and being on a ship which isn’t really my cup of tea. This could be read as a stand-alone…it really has nothing to do with the other characters in book 1 and 2. Elise grew up on the water and has been there all her life. She loves it and has no desire to marry. Her place is on her father’s boat as the cook. Nick Clark saves her and ends up working on her father’s ship. The two get to know each other better and eventually fall in love. Their relationship felt a bit stalled, I guess, for lack of a better word. Yikes, Duran is evil! Her father should have told him to go a while ago. The whole thing with Caroline and Nelson was irritating! I didn’t like it one bit! It really took away from the story. With that being said, it was still a sweet love story on the seas!

Quickie review:
Waiting on Love by Tracie Peterson

#3 in Ladies of the Lake series (stand alone novels with no common characters)

Setting: 1872, Sailing on the Great Lakes between Oswego NY and Duluth MI.

MCs: Elise and Nick

Read: 6/4/22

Rating: 3.5 stars

Review:
While I really enjoyed the story, it felt like a great deal of events and elements were packed into a small space that left the tale feeling hurried and not having as much depth as it could have. From the serial killer side character to the troubles in Elise’s sister’s marriage, it didn’t seem to leave time for the MCs to stop doing things for very long, and the ending was abrupt. Otherwise it was a sweet, clean love story with an unusual setting.

When Elise's mother died, she promised to take care of her father. It was a pledge she took seriously even if it meant giving up on love. When she met Nick, she was intrigued but knew she couldn't marry him because of her promise.

Waiting on Love offered an interesting look at life on the ships that sailed the great lakes, but a lot of the times, the story dragged because it had too much minutiae. I struggled to get into the story because it seemed as if there was too much focus on recounting every single detail which at times got repetitive.

Also, the moments that should have been high tension were dropped in almost as an afterthought.

There were some likable characters such as Elise, Nick, Captain Wright and Tom but they were pretty flat and it was hard to get invested in the characters' stories. I did not like Elise's sister, Caroline, as she seemed shallow and selfish...even near the end when the plot was unraveling.

Duran was a completely horrid character and I didn't quite buy into Captain Wright's reason to keep giving him "second" chances when it was obvious he didn't want them.

I did enjoy the fact that Elise, Nick, and Captain Wright actively pursued a relationship with God. Their faith encourages us to pursue the same.

There are several themes running through Waiting on Love one of which is the fact that there is no condemnation for those who are in Christ.  We will make mistakes but when we are in Christ, healing, forgiveness, and redemption are readily available.

I received an advanced reader's copy from the publisher through NetGalley; a positive review was not required.

"Waiting on Love" is set in 1872 on the Great Lakes. This book is the third in a series, but it's basically a stand-alone. Historical details about life on a freight ship and the development of the Great Lakes area were woven into the story and provided a distinct sense of time and place. The main characters were complex and grew throughout the story. Elise and Nick spent time together and got to know each other. They shared interests, especially their love of life on ship. Elise, her father, and Nick looked to God for peace during danger and studied the Bible. The father's belief in God's power to transform people was why he gave a trouble-maker a position on his boat. There was no sex or bad language. Overall, I'd recommend this enjoyable historical romance.

That said, I felt like they didn't react realistically to this trouble-maker. At first, yes, but when it's clear that he's violent and hates everyone on the crew, and Elise suspects that he might have committed murder? Just seems odd and like they didn't take the danger seriously.

I received an ebook review copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley.

Ladies of the Lake was a fantastic series, and this book was a superb finale. The first two might have featured developments of the lake, but this story put us right on the lake with a ship’s cook and first mate. It was adventurous and family oriented and right up my alley.

The bad guy was way too obvious and over-the-top, but he did make things rather interesting at times.

The rest of the cast was wonderful and complex. I enjoyed getting to know them, and being right there on the adventures with them was great.

The plot was simply marvelous. I liked the concern Elise had for her father and sister, and it was equally great to see Nick striving to regain his reputation in multiple people’s eyes. It was fun to spend a lot of the book on a ship on one of the Great Lakes too.

Content: alcohol and drunkenness

This final book in Tracie Peterson's Ladies of the Lake series was a wonderful conclusion as well as my favorite of the series. Crisscrossing the Great Lakes on her father's freighter ship, the Mary Elise, Elise Wright is the cook for her father's crew. Elise loves being on the water as much as her father does. With her mother's death, she has promised she will look after her father; but when a new first mate, Nick Clark, comes aboard will sparks fly along with changes in her life?

This book had a touch of mystery along with romance, but I found the most interesting part how much of a role the freighters played in life along the Great Lakes in the 1870's as they transported necessary items from one place to another. Also the lock system that the freighters used to move from one lake to another was fascinating. Peterson's research definitely shown throughout this particular book as she brought this period of the Great Lakes to life.

Elsie made a promise that she intends to keep even if it means sacrificing her own happiness. She loves the water and cannot image living on land for life. She is content to be a cook on her father’s ship the Mary Elise. Nick Clark cannot seem to escape the self blame he has placed on himself for mistakes he made while he was a captain. He has look everywhere for a job and is relieved to finally find one onboard the Mary Elise. But when a troublesome sailor seems intent on ruining them can Elsie and Nick still find happiness amongst it all?

I found this story set in the waters of the Great Lakes very interesting. Thought the story line was good I did not like all the seemingly extra romance that was less to do with the book then needed.

Elise loves cooking for the crew of her father's ship as they sail on the Great Lakes. She has no desire to marry until a fine-looking sailor comes aboard seeking work. Nick becomes invaluable when he protects Elise and the rest of the crew from another new sailor on board. Elise's estranged sister adds a twist to the story when she reenters their lives and causes a stir. Things come to a head when the trouble maker makes a move that will change their lives forever.

Waiting on Love is a nice conclusion to the Ladies of the Lake series. The story is rich with so many things on so many levels. Here's just my three picks.

First, the history. One can learn quite a few facts about living on the shores of the Great Lakes in the 1870's. I found it interesting to discover that women captained ships or that whole families lived and worked on board of ships.

Second, the gospel. There are references to various Bible verses throughout the story. It may feel a little 'preachy' at times, but on the other hand, the abundance of scripture quotes may serve as a good reminder or an encouragement to the reader. Towards the end of the story, there is a very humbling, heart-breaking, but oh-so-beautiful scene that brought tears to my eyes.

Third, hard issues. The book draws attention to two difficult and, at the time, taboo issues in the society: the domestic violence and violence against women in general. It was considered the woman's own fault if she was attacked, and, usually, the women had no one to turn to for help. I am glad things turn out differently in this book.

I felt the main message of the story was forgiveness and making peace with one's past. It comes through in Captain Wright's desire to give second chances to the members of his crew. He himself having experienced forgiveness and a chance to start a new life. But most clearly the need for understanding forgiveness is shown though Nicodemus Clark who is plagued by the memory a deadly mistake he made years ago. There are also other characters who live with regrets and seek forgiveness both from God and from others.

It is a good book with a lot to take in and to think about.

The ending felt very abrupt. What should have been a pivotal part of the story was just skimmed over in a few pages. A character dies with little fanfare, a villain gets away with countless terrible acts with no accountability or justice... It just felt like a ton of tedious repetition culminating in a rushed and unsatisfying ending. Why couldn't the murderer have been brought to justice? What was the point of him being on the ship to begin with? I kept waiting for the reason to be revealed.. And it never was.

While I enjoyed the intertwining of Christ into the plot and character's decisions, I was pretty disappointed by the storyline as a whole.

Characters Refreshingly Honest with Integrity and Faith

I am grateful to have rediscovered Tracie Peterson’s writing and her recent book Waiting on Love which is part of the Ladies of the Lake series. This book is very different from what I usually read, but it was the storyline and characters which drew me in.

Elise Wright is very different than her sister Caroline. Both girls grew up sailing the sea with their father Captain Bill Wright and mother Mary, on their ship the Mary Elise. Caroline has chosen to marry a wealthy high society man she met through her aunt and uncle. But Elise loves the life she has on the sea. She will fulfill the promise she made to her dying mother, to continue to take care of her father and the ship’s crew. The ship will be taking on two new sailors, Nick Clark, a man who is haunted by his past, and Booker Duran a man who is on the run. Captain Wright sees something in both men and he wants to give them a second chance.

I absolutely loved this book! I read a lot of books by Christian authors and publishers and most of them have very little about faith. Not so with Waiting on Love by Tracie Peterson. The Christian faith and the Gospel of Jesus Christ are front and center in the lives of the characters and how they live, what they say and do. The Gospel and Bible verses are shared as part of the storyline and development of the characters. I appreciated and enjoyed the honesty and integrity of the characters, their graciousness, mercy, and kindness.

Of course, there is always an antagonist or two in stories. I appreciated the integrity and upright character displayed by the main characters in how they dealt with deceitful people seeking to do harm to others.

Reading Waiting on Love by Tracie Peterson left me with good examples of Christians living out their faith in an interesting story that takes place in the 1800s. I am so happy to have rediscovered Tracie Peterson. Reading this book makes me want to go back and read her earlier novels. I would like to commend Bethany House Publishers for allowing the Christian faith and the Gospel message to be shared in this fictional story.

I highly recommend Waiting on Love by Tracie Peterson. An interesting story, which takes place in a different era and a unique setting. I appreciated the refreshing honesty and integrity of the characters and examples of godly living. I liked that Elise embraced her femininity, and the men their masculinity. That’s not something you see too much these days in fiction.

I would like to thank Bethany House Publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read a complimentary copy of Waiting on Love by Tracie Peterson. I was under no obligation to give a favorable review.

I have not read a seafaring voyage book in quite a while and WAITING ON LOVE is the perfect addition to add to my collection. There is just something about reading a book with a setting on the Great Lakes with a young woman and the captain, her father.
Nick Clark has to leave home after not bowing to his father's wishes though he does keep abreast of the family's going ons through letters back and forth to the family's housekeeper.
After helping Elise Wright when she has an accident on the street Nick is pleased to be hired on as first mate on Elise's father's freighter ship, the Mary Elise. This is Elise's second home; she cooks and cleans for the crew and has been doing so for many years passing up opportunities to become entangled in a romance. The crew respects Elise and her father and wouldn't dream of trying any funny business with her. When a crew member who is newly hired on tries to put the moves on her and is disrespectful and bad news all around the crew quickly put him in his place.
I loved the descriptions of the work the crew did preparing to sail and being on the open water. The descriptions of the strong storms had me holding my breath hoping the ship would survive the peril.
A slow burn romance, this is Elise and Nick's story. He treated her so respectfully. We also spend some time on land and see a heartwarming reunion with Nick and a family member.
Nick is fighting his own demons, not able to forgive himself for something that he believes he is responsible for. Will Elise and her strong faith be able to help him with this?
I loved the deep faith the main characters have. There is adventure, romance and mystery.
I am always happy to read a book by this author, her books are so well researched. She always makes her books so fascinating.

Elise is happy to serve as a cook on her father's ship, the Mary Elise. Since her mother died, she has vowed to step up and take care of him. After attending her sister's wedding, a man named Nick saves Elise from an accident and her father offers him a position on his ship. Nick is trying to overcome his past where a mistake cost several men their lives on his former ship. He is happy to be given a second chance on board the Mary Elise. After spending time with Elise, Nick begins to develop feelings for her. But there is another shipmate who is giving her and the rest of the crew problems. Elise's father wants to give him a second chance but as time goes on, his bad behavior escalates and new dangers emerge. Nick must overcome his past in order to protect Elise in the present. And they both must rely on God to pull them through dangerous and deadly circumstances.

I really enjoyed the setting of this book being on a transport ship on the Great Lakes. It made the danger seem greater when they were confined to a ship in addition to the threat of the weather. I loved the faith content throughout the entire book. Themes of forgiveness, redemption, and trusting God were all threaded into the story. I did find it odd that Elise's father was so willing to give chance after chance to someone who not only attacked/threatened his crew but also his daughter. I also felt like the sister's storyline was somewhat pointless and if it hadn't been included then maybe more character development on the ship could have taken place. But overall, I found this to be a good, faith-filled story.

Bethany House Publishers and Netgalley provided me with a copy of Waiting on Love to review:

She has made some big promises. She'll have to put everything she's got into keeping them.

Her father's freighter ship, the Mary Elise, crisscrosses the Great Lakes, and Elise Wright has grown up cooking and caring for the crew. She loves her life. In contrast to her estranged sister, Elise has refused numerous opportunities for a "respectable life" with their wealthy relatives. And now, because of promises she made to her dying mother, she's bound to the ship and her deeply grieving father more than ever. Having made promises to her dying mother, she's now more devoted than ever to the ship and her grieving father.

While Nick Clark is working to overcome his own guilt and others' rebukes for a fatal decision he made while captaining another ship, he is grateful to be hired on as the Mary Elise's first mate. When a rough new sailor seems intent on causing serious trouble, he feels protective of the Wrights and their generous nature.

Despite the sailor's misdeeds, tragedy looms around the corner. With their commitments to themselves and to each other still to be fulfilled, Nick and Elise will have to rely on their faith to make it through.

I give Waiting on Love five out of five stars!

Happy Reading!

Oh goodness, this was such a good read and it had me sucked in right from the beginning! Although it took place long before my time, it was still fun to see familiar places like Oswego, Buffalo, and Niagara Falls. I loved the characters in this one, and each of them were well developed and played their own unique role in the overall story that simply wouldn't have been the same without them. I liked that I was surprised by the twists and turns, and that it managed to bring out several different emotions as I read... and I always say I love a book that makes me FEEL something. Booker Duran? Let's just say you'll understand once you read it for yourself. I like that each of the characters had their flaws. The faith element was very well done, especially as each of the characters experienced growth regardless of how far a long they were with their walk with the Lord. There wasn't anyone who had it all "figured out" and that was kind of the point. At no point do you stop needing Jesus.

Although this is the third book in the Ladies of the Lake series, it is also a standalone story so it wouldn't have to be read in any particular order. This was a really great series though, and one I would easily give my recommendation to other historical romance fans.

Waiting on Love

This Story as the others in re series of "Ladies of the Lake" is thrilling and capture my heart and attention! I know death is apart of what we all must do; that is pass away! But, sometimes I would love the characters to live, why was the wife dead and then Captain so broken hearted? Elise and Caroline were both young women! Though captain Wright had sailed for sometime, he and his wife were probably only in their forties! Aunt Martha and Uncle James Monroe were as well! The developing family, uncle James was brother of The girls deceased mother and was in partner with Captain Wright.
I truly enjoyed Elise, Captain Wright, Caroline( fighting back when she was abused by her husband), though recently wed was an adulterous, and beat her; she return to her family and got the marriage anul! For Elise remained faithful to her grieving father cooking for the " Mary Elise" and his crew on the ship, life on the Lake was where she was born and and fell in love with Nicademus "Nick" Clark!
The ending both surprised and sadden me! Great reading, just to sorrowful! Thanks Ms. Tracie, when I started reading ( 1999) again during my illness, you were my first author, to date can't stop reading your stories! So, everyone grab this series and enjoy!

This was better than the second book of the series, but still not as good as the first. I actually did get invested in the storyline, and Nick was also a wonderful character. However, I just didn't feel any chemistry or build up in the romance. I also got really frustrated with Elise's father for putting up with Booker Duran. They kept giving him warnings, but they never followed through. I understand wanting to give people second chances, but when they are constantly #1 slacking at their job #2 threatening people - including your own daughter! and #3 acting like a flat-out sociopath, you have to fire them! Christians are not supposed to be doormats, especially for murderers! (That's not really a spoiler, as Booker tells the reader all his sordid crimes fairly early in the story.

In the second book in this series, she was constantly telling instead of showing. At least that wasn't the case with this book. However, it just wasn't up to the high bar set by the first Ladies of the Lake book. I think I will go back and read an earlier book of Peterson's. I think the publishers are making her crank these out way too fast.

Captain Wright has been sailing the Mary Elise on the Great Lakes for years but he is still suffering from his wife's death. His daughter, Elise, loves the ship life and has vowed to take over for her deceased mother to take care of her father and his crew, even if it means sacrificing her own hope for a husband/family. Her sister, Caroline, wants nothing to do with that life and has recently married a rich gentleman and hopes for the life she has always dreamed of. Captain Wright brings on Nick as his 1st mate and soon finds Nick is also suffering from guilt after a ship he captained was caught in a storm with loss of life. Captain Wright also brings on a man as a sailor, hoping to help him leave his life of crime behind and find a life in God. However, he is trouble from day 1.

All these stories play out in the setting of Minnesota and the Great Lakes along with the unforgiving weather and storms. A strong Christian theme of relying on God and always seeking him for forgiveness and guidance. A story of love -- both romantic and familial. It is bittersweet in some parts.

Waiting on Love by Tracie Peterson is the third book in her Ladies of the Lake historical romance series.

I’ve enjoyed this series, especially because it’s set on the Great Lakes and primarily centered around Duluth, Minnesota. This book takes place mostly on board one of the lake-going vessels that carried coal and grain up and down Lake Michigan.

Waiting on Love isn’t the most light-hearted read, nor the easiest, but I loved the way Nick stood by Elise even while dealing with his own struggles. He shows himself to be trustworthy and dependable. And Elise needs that with everything she faces. This book also contains a few trigger warnings for abuse and unwed pregnancy. I loved the sense of justice throughout the story.

Overall, I enjoyed the setting as well as the characters and wish there were more stories in the series.

Elise's father is the Captain of the Mary Elise, a cargo ship on the Great Lakes. Elise has lived on the boat with her family all her life and now that she is grown up and her mother is deceased, she does all the things her mother used to do, including cooking, laundry and other chores on the ship.

Nick Parker hires on as the First Mate. He grew up in priviledge and then followed his heart and became a ship's captain. After some set backs, and meeting Elise and her father, he asks to be hired on the Mary Elise.

There are a lot of circumstances that need to be resolved to include sheltering Elise's sister from an abusive husband, a possible murderer on the crew and rough weather. This is a great story and I am especially happy about the fact that the main characters had strong Christian ethics and a love for God and the Bible.

I have voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book that I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

The author had me turning the pages for answers, a lot of action here, both on the water and on land. We get to travel the Great Lakes on a freighter, leaving out of Oswego, NY one Lake Ontario, with travels to Chicago and Duluth, where they own a small home.

We are given a young woman, Elise Wright, with a big heart, and them a young man, Nick Clark, who carries a big weight on his heart. Could there be a relationship between theses two? Would either or both want to spend their lives on the water?

I loved the deep faith of all of the main characters, and how they went about living their faith. We are given a lot in this story and greed rears its nasty head many times here. There is some sweet romance, and a bit of forgiveness.

This is the third book in this series, but it can be read alone.

This is the third story titled “Waiting on Love” in Peterson’s “Ladies of the Lake” Great Lakes series. I love reading about ships on the seas and all the storms and perils that befall them. In this book it’s a schooner on the great Lakes. Still there is danger and perils, even a murderer on board. Peterson combines romance with shipwrecks, murder, deck brawls and learning to forgive. I love how she weaves scripture and faith in God through out the story. There are family disagreements for the two daughters of the captain of the Mary Elise and much heartbreak. Elise promised her dying mother that she would always take care of her daddy. Therefore as the cook on his ship she never gave marriage another thought, that is until a handsome ex-captain was hired on as first mate. You will love the thrills and dangers and also the love and faith in God that unfolds in this interesting book…..Thanks to the publisher for an e-copy via NetGalley.

In "Waiting on Love" by Tracie Peterson, it was encouraging to see how waiting on the right person is important. To not rush anything is where the best things come out of. Allowing things to happen naturally is important because there is no pressure and no forcing things to happen.
In "Waiting on Love," Elise Wright lives on a ship with her father. She cooks and cares for the men ever since her mother died. They named the ship after her mother, Mary Elise. While caring for the men and her father, Elise meets a man named Nick Clark. Nick is a man who is hired by Elise's father and they are quickly attracted to each other. This relationship went through hard times throughout the time on she ship, but they put God first and allowed Him to tell them what to do to get out of the situation they were in. They were put to the test, but due to them waiting to find each other and being able to trust in God, they were able to get through everything they had struggles with.

Waiting on Love is the third book of Tracie Peterson's latest series. I read the first one but somehow missed the second one. I'll have to find time to go back and read the second one, Forever My Own, since I really enjoyed the first and last. They read as stand-alones which is nice.

It was great to go back to Duluth, Minnesota in 1872 and this time we meet Elise who cooks and works on her father's ship, the Mary Elise, and Nick Clark who is hired on as first mate. There is adventure, romance and mystery. I found it to be quite an engaging story and was rooting for this couple.

Thank you Netgalley for the opportunity to read and review. All opinions are my own.

~~~ I received a copy of this book via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review ~~~
Dislaimer: I am not an overly religious person and this is a Christian Romance title, however I adored it. Waiting on Love is the second book by Tracie Peterson I've read, however the first in the Ladies of the Lake series that I've read (I plan to read the other two). This is the story of Elise, her family (father and sister), and her romantic relationship with Nick. Elise's father is the captain of a schooner that sails the Great Lakes between NY and MN. Elise serves as the cook and cares for her father and the rest of the crew. This is a story of love, trust, family, and survival. Times were tough sailing the Great Lakes and Elise (and the crew) experiences many trials including storms, deaths, scandals, and even a murder mystery. This book is so well written and the characters drew me in immediately. I would definitely recommend this book to anyone enjoying historical fiction- specifically Great Lakes history.
A freight-hauler family runs their ship on the Great Lakes every season. Elise and her father, the captain, manage the trips and live on board. Her mother is deceased and her sister, Caroline, finds herself better suited to the high-life that her uncle can offer. The captain finds himself in need of a new first mate, just as Nick Clark comes into the picture. Nick is the disowned son of a textile magnate in Boston.
There's a scandal with Caroline and her new husband. Nick has unresolved issues with his father. Elise is devoted to the ship and taking care of her father out of a sense of duty to her mother.
It's an interesting setting and a good read. Thanks to Bethany House Publishers for providing me an ARC in exchange for a review in my own words.
This book started off being a decent book and would have possibly been a 4 star but the ending changed my mind completely. An important character who was loved by the reader was killed off in a brutal and nonchalant way. And at the very end of the book too. Giving you the whole book to fall in love with the character and then killing them off in the last chapter. That saddened me and left me with an unhappy ending. That’s a no for me.
The adventure in this book was an upside. Also the godliness of the characters was good.
Love those parts but I wouldn’t read it again nor would I have read it if I’d known about the ending.
If that’s your thing go for it, but I wouldn’t recommend it to anyone.
A good read. Elise Wright has grown up cooking and caring for the crew of her father's freighter ship, the Mary Elise. She loves her life on the ship and doesn't want any other.
Nick Clark is glad to be hired to serve temporarily as the First Mate on the Mary Elise as he works thru his grief of losing his last ship and most of his men. Will he be able to move past this loss?
On ship one of the new crew members is giving the others trouble. Will he be trouble for everyone? What will happen in the end? Will they survive this season on the Lake and it's troublesome storms?
It has quite a bit of drama at times. Didn't end quite the way I had thought it would be it was a good story.
