I'm very picky, like very picky when it comes to romance novels...some might even say my views on romance are...strange, reserved, um, probably old-fashioned. And I'm totally okay with that. Personally, this book was not for me. I just....yeah, some of the talk and thoughts made me uncomfortable. I'd also love to see more interactions between characters that don't involve them thinking about romantic things. Honestly, I'm not a fan of the whole "love at first sight, I can't control my desire thing."
I just...I dunno, feel that these stories could contain so much more! The spiritual aspect could be fleshed out, the human desires lessened. This is all a personal opinion. These books just aren't for me, that's all...

I am really enjoying the Colorado Cowboys series!
Because of her unconventional upbringing Linnea Newberry doesn't feel like anything should be off limits to her including doing things typically limited to males in her time period.
She is thrilled to be on the trip of a lifetime. Traveling with her grandfather, she is an extremely brilliant botanist studying all the flora she comes across. Though not taken seriously except by her grandfather she is out to prove not only her intelligence in her chosen field but she'll prove she can keep up with the men and not fall behind or get hurt on this trip on Santa Fe Trail.
Oops, she hasn't counted on the mishaps that have put her life in danger a few times and in doing so holding the trip up. Unknown to her, her grandfather hires a man to keep her safe on the trip so she can continue on with the expedition. Flynn McQuaid is the man for the job, this cowboy is delivering cattle to his older brother and there's the task of caring for his younger siblings. Can he manage the added responsibility of being Linnea's bodyguard as well? Who will guard Flynn from himself whenever he starts falling for his charge though?
Flynn and Linnea both have secrets that could have pretty strong repercussions if not handled the right way. Such a beautiful story about acceptance,trust,repentance,faith,understanding and love.
The author has done it again! This is an absolute must read author for me!

While the war is raging in the east, MMC Flynn McQuaid and his younger brother Dylan and 12-year-old sister Ivy are herding cattle to Wyatt McQuaid’s ranch in Colorado. (Wyatt is the oldest brother and his story was the first book in the series.) Two other characters helping with the cattle are Nash and Jericho, friends who volunteered to help with the drive and head west – away from the war. The only sibling who is not on the cattle drive is Brody. Being of age, Brody enlists in the Union army despite Flynn’s objections.
This is book two in Ms. Hedlund’s Colorado Cowboys series. It begins in May of 1863 not far from Council Grove, Kansas. As the cattle group has just crossed a river prior to a wagon caravan carrying FMC Linnea Newberry and her colleagues, Flynn just happens to be at the right place and time when Linnea falls into the river. As the book’s blurb states, Dr. Howell, who is Linnea’s grandfather hires Flynn to look out for her after Flynn saves her from drowning. Dr. Howell also doesn’t want Flynn to mention that he’s being paid to be her bodyguard. Linnea is working with her grandfather and a few other scientists recording plant life for a botany project. Flynn learns she is a young widow who lost her husband earlier in the trip. The research team resumes their expedition with the cattle herders instead of the original caravan they were traveling with.
After watching his mother die from childbirth, Flynn has convinced himself he will never marry and put a woman through what his mother went through. This is his reason for not wanting to be in a relationship and I found his logic flawed. His mother produced five healthy children in her first marriage. After Flynn’s father passed, Mrs. McQuaid re-married and her second husband kept getting her pregnant after being advised she shouldn’t have any more children. It was after the third still born pregnancy that she dies. Flynn hates his stepfather Rusty and blames him for his mother’s death. Rusty is also responsible for Flynn’s limp. It’s explained well in the story and is one of the reasons Flynn doesn’t have a good relationship with his older brother Wyatt.
After their mother dies, Rusty tells Flynn that he and his siblings must leave the farm that has been in their family for generations. (One of the original conditions Rusty had for marrying their mother was that the property be deeded to him.) This is the reason Flynn accepts Wyatt's offer to herd the cattle to his South Park ranch in Colorado.
Throw in some violent encounters with some Confederate “Irregulars,” one of the scientists trying to sabotage Dr. Howell’s botany project, and the up and down romance between Flynn and Linnea, then you have an okay story. I found the inner turmoil the main characters carried too repetitive. It's not a bad book. I just enjoyed the first one better.
Brody’s story is book three and I’m looking forward to reading it.

Oh! I enjoyed this book more than I thought I would. Which is ridiculous to say because I knew I was going to like it. I love this author and I liked the first book in this series so of course I was going to like it, right? But I REALLY liked it. Devoured it. I had hours of uninterrupted reading time so I had minimal distractions and it was lovely.
The characters really came to life for me throughout the course of this story. My heart was bursting for Flynn and all he was dealing with. What a loyal, hardworking and considerate man. I wanted to wrap him up in a big mama bear hug with all kinds of "build him up" words. Fortunately, Linnea is also good at building words and she uses them frequently and with kindness toward Flynn. Beauty, smarts and kindness- the triple threat. Flynn doesn't really ever stand a chance against Linnea.
I'm loving this series. We get a little sneak peek at the next book and wow, I wish I could read it right now. My heart. The McQuaid family. I just love them.

Another sweet historical romance by Hedlund! She’s been a long-time favorite of mine. The wagon train adventures with Flynn and a host of engaging characters kept me entertained through pages of this book. I actually liked this one better than the first book in the series. But they’re both great if you like romance. I enjoyed catching up with Wyatt and Greta too!

Flynn has been mother and father to his younger siblings, shouldering the responsibilities of a family, and more than his share of the blame. Linnea, recently widowed, is fighting to prove her worth as a botanist in her own right, apart from her late husband and grandfather's shadows.
An engaging romance, set against the backdrop of the treacherous trail to Colorado, fraught with danger and Confederate Irregulars. Linnea is a modern woman for her time, with a passion for plants and sciences. I liked how she takes Flynn's sister Ivy, under her wing, teaching her about being a young woman. Ivy spunky and full of sass, she says things as she sees them sometimes to the embarrassment of others, easily one of my favorite people in the story!
Flynn has spent his life trying to protect his family, first from the fists of his step-father, then fields of battle, and now delivering a herd of cattle to his brother Wyatt in Colorado. After reading the last book in the series, I wasn't sure how any of the other McQuaid brothers could measure up to Wyatt, but Flynn easily won me over with his strong protective instincts, and big heart.
Overall, a fantastic, sizzling with chemistry, and roaring with action, addition to the series, I loved seeing both new and familiar faces in the pages of this book. Especially since Judd was my favorite from the previous book. A engrossing read, with characters that you can cheer for throughout, with an inspiring message of faith and overcoming the past. Definitely recommend for fans of western romance! I can't wait to read Brody's story!

1863 Kansas to Colorado Territory
What a wonderful series! I love that the author is showing different aspects of the time period through her characters. While the first in the series enlightened readers about the challenges of homesteading in the west, The Heart of a Cowboy details the difficulties of traveling west.
The brothers in the series each respond differently to the abusive marriage their mother is in. Flynn chose to stay with his mother protecting her and caring for his younger brother and sister. He feels the weight of responsibility and holds a grudge against Wyatt yet is compelled to join his brother in Colorado Territory.
Linnea is a rare female college graduate traveling with her grandfather and other botanists to capture samples for a publication. She is down to earth (frequently gathering her samples) yet absent minded too as Linnea can be so focused on her task that she blocks out everything else.
Flynn's sister Ivy is a great character that is full of spunk and no filter on her words.
My favorite aspect of historical fiction is learning something new and this novel delivered. A couple of examples...the sleeping patterns of cows and Irregulars.
A delightful journey west. I look forward to reading Brody's story.

I really liked how this book took on the entire trail from the Midwest to Colorado. It took time. We saw the struggles. And during that time is when *something* had time to develop.
Flynn finds Linnea in a river, and that should have been his first clue as to how their relationship would go. But he decided to play bodyguard for her, secretly of course. Linnea is along to be a botanist and work with the men, but she is constantly proving that she CAN be a botanist and a woman. I mean, she only married someone twice her age so that she could come along this journey; too bad he died before it started. So when she starts to have feelings for Flynn, the pull is stronger and much different than she had for her first husband of 2 months. Is this what love is?
I loved Wyatt’s story in book one.
I absolutely adore Flynn’s story in book 2.
I cannot wait for Brody’s story in book 3.
And we just got word that Ivy’s story had a cover and is coming out October 2022! So so so excited!!!

So much to love about this book. I enjoyed the characters, a young widow botanist, a cowboy with much to overcome, and a loving grandfather. Also nice to see the characters from the first book again. The journey was full of adventure and romance. A favourite quote: "The God who took care of the grass and the flowers and the trees had taken care of her just as He'd promised." Yes, it has a happy ending!

I have loved Jody Hedlund's books since her very first. She is very adept at switching genres, and I love each one she does. This series, her cowboy one, she proves yet again how great a writer she is. Fromm crafting believable characters and wonderful plots, when you sit down to read a Hedlund book, you can be sure of a pleasurable reading experience. Well done!

I really don’t know how to start because I LOVED this book SO MUCH!!!!
I’m not a huge fan of travel/journey type of plots in books, and this one being a wagon train I wasn’t sure how I would feel about it, but I really, really liked it!
I loved Flynn. Let’s just get that out there. Probably not as much as Wyatt from the first book, but I liked him. I like all of the McQuaid brothers, honestly!! And Linnea was just a doll! I found her kind of childish at the beginning, but I grew to really like her!
I knew I would like this book, because I loved book one so much, but this is definitely my new obsession right now. Book three is probably my most anticipated book of 2022 right now; not gonna lie. This is my favorite Cowboy series at this point, for sure!
I cannot wait for Brodys book and Dylan’s! Maybe we’ll get Ivy as well?? I hope so anyway.

In book two of Colorado Cowboys, we see Flynn McQuaid driving a herd of cattle for his brother from Independence, Missouri to a ranch in Fairplay, Colorado. Along the way he comes on a group of scientists who are cataloging plants for the Smithsonian. Among them are botanists Linnea, a young widow, and her grandfather, Dr. Howell. After rescuing Linnea, Flynn agrees to act as a bodyguard and the two groups join for the rest of the journey. Flynn: “ When he agreed to guard her, he never bargained on having to guard his heart.” As much as they try to keep things businesslike, Flynn and Linnea are drawn to each other. Linnea loves plants. They point her to a God of creation, a God who cares for her. “Whenever she considered God’s exquisite design of something so small as a blade of grass or the petal of a flower, she was always able to put her life in better perspective.”
Lots of realism, adventure and danger on the Sante Fe Trail. A realism that included fighting an attraction, dealing with fears and ultimately relying on God for their care. They learned a lesson on reconciliation and forgiveness.
Ms. Hedlund proves to be a very versatile author. I am looking forward to the third book and Brody’s story.

I was excited to read this book because I enjoyed book one and the McQuaid siblings. I thought I wouldn’t like Flynn more than I did Wyatt, but I was wrong.
Flynn has so much on his plate and though he doesn’t always handle things perfectly, he’s trying. That is so appealing! I loved that he was trying to do right by his brother and sister and help his older brother.
I also liked the way he interacted with Linnea, being more amused than annoyed. He was able to see her in a way no one else (not even her grandfather) did.
There were a couple of times that I was bothered by Linnea’s actions, but in the grand scheme of things, considering the times, I could understand why she did what she did.
All in all, another good book and one that has me looking forward to the next McQuaid sibling.

An absolutely phenomenal second story in Jody Hedlund’s Colorado Cowboys series! The Heart of a Cowboy was one of my most anticipated reads of the year and it exceeded my expectations. Hedlund just writes so incredibly well—I always connect with her characters, I always feel inspired, and I’m always enraptured by the stories she tells.
Each book Hedlund writes just impresses me further. Flynn and Linnea are intensely relatable characters, as are the other members of the McQuaid family. I learned something unique from each character, and I absolutely can’t wait for the rest of this series. And we even get a glimpse into Brody’s story, which is going to be so hard to wait for, in this book.
If you like historical romance even a little bit, there is no author I recommend more than Jody Hedlund. Grab your copy of The Heart of a Cowboy as soon as you’re able! 5/5 stars

Each book Hedlund writes just impresses me further. Flynn and Linnea are intensely relatable characters, as are the other members of the McQuaid family. I learned something unique from each character, and I absolutely can’t wait for the rest of this series. And we even get a glimpse into Brody’s story, which is going to be so hard to wait for, in this book.
If you like historical romance even a little bit, there is no author I recommend more than Jody Hedlund. Grab your copy of The Heart of a Cowboy as soon as you’re able! 5/5 stars

December 4, 2021My thoughts are so jumbled right now...I can't even...my full review is gonna be later than I'd wanted it to be (I'd hope to get it done by, like, mid-November, but here we are).
I will say this, though. I'm done with Jody Hedlund's casual mentions of birth control (both in this book and in Come Back to Me). It's one thing if it's being portrayed for what it is - unnatural, anti-life, selfish, and damaging. It's another if it's being portrayed in a casual, nonchalant, completely normal manner, such as how Mrs. Hedlund has been depicting it in her last two adult novels. As a Christian and a mother, I expect a wee bit more respect for life from her.
But then again, maybe that's just the Catholic in me. I'm sorry (not really, actually, I'm just saying that), but I don't believe that birth control in any form is good - for women, men, or the children whose conceptions are prevented - so I find it crass and discomforting when it shows up so casually in the Christian fiction I read. I'm perfectly all right with depicting it...the fact that Linnea used birth control during her first marriage was understandable, since she was a feminist who wanted her own way. But when the underlying reasons why she used it are not dealt with - self-centeredness, refusing to seek and yield to God's will, and a lack of respect for nature and life - and the character never experiences a true softening of the heart toward having and raising children, I'm not so forgiving.
I could just be an intolerant bigot who expresses her opinions too often and too discriminately and who blows things out of proportion and takes personal offense to simple things...or I could have a point. What do you think? What are your thoughts on birth control?

What a wonderful historical romance! I loved being on the trail with Flynn, his siblings, Linnea, and the group of scientists traveling west. This is book two in the Colorado Cowboy series, yet can be read and enjoyed even if you haven’t read the first book, A Cowboy for Keeps. However, having read book one in the series, I was happy to get to see what was going on with former characters toward the end of The Heart of a Cowboy.
Flynn was a great character. He had such a heart for his siblings and wanted to protect them and raise them right. He felt that he had failed to protect his mother, who died in childbirth, as well as a brother who had run off to join the war. He carried guilt as well as trauma from his mother’s death, yet he still had a heart for others. His kindness toward Linnea and her grandfather spoke to the sort of man he was.
I loved the way the relationship began developing between Linnea and Flynn. They both kept trying to keep their interactions based in friendship, but there was a deep attraction that kept developing, even as both of them pushed against it. There were some big obstacles between them and only by putting their trust in God did they have a hope of a future together. I loved this book from start to finish and look forward to the next in the series.

I've been looking forward to continuing the Colorado Cowboys series since I first read "A Cowboy for Keeps" and let me say that I loved it just as much as I expected! Flynn was even better than I expected and Linnea was just the sweetest!
I won't spoil anything but I highly recommend "The Heart of a Cowboy" for western romance lovers!
And, that snippet of the next book... Ahh, it hurt not to have the book in hand yet!

I read the first book in this series at the start of a holiday break and once again I found myself at the end of a big and exhausting term and I picked up the second book in the series. Perfect timing indeed, because once again, slipping into a Jody Hedlund historical romance was exactly the way I needed to start my school holidays.
The second book in the Colorado Cowboys series can be read as a standalone novel, so if you haven’t read the first book don’t hesitate to read this one.
I love when historical romances give me the taste of the past with all the comfort of today’s views and opinions. The Heart of a Cowboy does just that. Linnea is a botanist and an excellent scientist. She is travelling with her grandfather and a group of scientists on a botanical expedition to Colorado. Despite her excellent scientific discoveries and abilities, she had to twist her grandfather’s arm to allow her to accompany the expedition and he worries greatly about her safety - and not just because she’s a woman. Linnea can become so distracted by her work she wanders off and finds herself in all sorts of danger. Like when she falls off the wagon during a river crossing and needs to be rescued by Flynn McQuaid. Flynn has no need for extra people to rescue and look out for. He is already managing the care of his younger brother and sister, while driving a herd of cattle to Colorado for his older brother and mourning how he couldn’t stop his other younger brother from joining the war. When Linnea’s grandfather asks Flynn and his family to join the expedition and employs Flynn to keep an eye on Linnea, Flynn thinks it will be easy - just another body to look out for. But caring for Linnea, as Flynn soon finds himself doing in more ways than just physical safety, puts everything he has decided for himself and his future at risk.
If this isn’t a swoony romance, I don’t now what is. Flynn and Linnea have incredible chemistry and the many mishaps she finds herself in and the many times Flynn has to rescue her give them plenty of opportunities to get up close and personal. Of course, while Linnea is prone to mishaps, she is no wilting flower. She is strong, intelligent and kind. Her kindness towards Flynn and his family, bring the McQuaids out of their grief. She also demonstrates how being a woman is not going to stop her or her dreams for her future.
Readers of the first book in the series will likely find Flynn’s last name familiar. We followed his older brother in the first book and things look set to join the next brother in the third book.
If you enjoy a good adventurous and very romantic historical novel, then you are sure to enjoy The Heart of a Cowboy - I know I did. And now I think I’ll just wait and see if book three aligns with a future holiday break, hopefully in the near future, because I can’t wait to slip into this time zone and delightful family again.

Given my love for botany, it was exciting to have a heroine who is a botanist cataloging the flora of the Great Plains and Rockies. It would have been nice if she hadn't spent the book worrying about proving her worth (the trope of a woman proving her worth in a man's profession gets a little old), but it wasn't unrealistic. I always enjoy learning something new, and this time I learned about all the renegade bands of confederate soldiers harassing the trail all the way to Denver--I hadn't realized the Civil War spilled over that far west.
With the journey on the Santa Fe Trail, it reminded me of the author's earlier work (and my favorite of hers), The Doctor's Lady. They feature different routes west and different time periods, but there's a lot of similar hardship along the trail (and, funnily enough, problems the direct opposite of each other). For me, this one didn't have the emotional punch that loved in The Doctor's Lady, but I enjoyed it. It was very heavy on the romance.

We meet botanist, Linnea Newberry as she’s being swept downriver after bouncing out of her wagon on the Santa Fe trail. Proving herself to be a magnet for trouble, Linnea’s grandfather hires Flynn McQuaid to watch over her while their parties are joined together. Flynn and Linnea’s simmering attraction as well as the dangers of trail life in Colorado Territory kept me turning page after page. The characters were captivating, particularly Ivy with her teasing and no-nonsense honesty. The final chapter has me longing to get my hands on the next book in the series ASAP!

Jody Hedlund's Heart Of A Cowboy is a beautiful story about Linnea Newberry a scientist and a proponent of woman's rights and Flynn McQuaid an overprotective cowboy. I enjoyed reading about their journey west. Flynn has vowed never to marry, while Linnea, recently widowed will only settle for love. I loved watching their faith grow as their love for each other also grows. The plot is fast-moving and the characters are believable.
I suggest you fix your favorite coffee and settle into a cozy chair for an awesome read.

Reading Heart of a Cowboy gave me Little House on the Prairie vibes only for grown ups. And mashed in with an old-timie Western like Rawhide. :-) And I like how some of the emphasis is on what the women endured making that kind of cross country wilderness trek. Including the limitations placed on them by men who thought they knew better which makes for so many intriguing plot points!
Loved Linnea and her earnest scientific mind that sometimes leaves her in calamitous situations which just begs for a strapping hero rescue a time or two.. :-) In fact, Flynn and Linnea's meet-cute is an extremely memorable one. Sigh, yes, I know I just mentioned the exasperating limitations men put on women in this era but, really, for all Linnea's intelligence and gumption, she still needs rescuing in this unfamiliar territory and Flynn is just the man for the job. Which made me one happy reader.
Tremendous character growth stems from some conflicted back stories. Both Flynn and Linnea harbour secrets and hurts that they aren't comfortable voicing which, naturally, puts a damper on romance...if only they weren't so drawn to one another! Honestly, this story took quite a few unexpected turns that kept me in a cattywampus state right to the very end!
Action, adventure, danger -- everything you'd expect to find in a classic Western romance crafted in Jody Hedlund's uniquely captivating style.

Also, this book was everything. The characters were all so real and the plot was absolutely perfect. I fell in love with Flynn and Linnea and couldn’t put the book down!

Overall I enjoyed the book. However, I did not appreciate the references to birth control in the story. Also, the idea that Flynn would have been the one staying with the laboring Greta seemed unrealistic, even if it was a plot device to signify how he was getting over his fear of women in labor.

The Heart of a Cowboy, by Jody Hedlund, is the second book in the Colorado Cowboys series. As a western, historical romance, this novel is exceedingly special. With captivating characters and a gripping plot, this book is thoroughly engaging and beautifully written. From the first sentence to the last, elements of history, adventure, and romance are woven together expertly to create a story that entertains and inspires.
Spanning miles of Western territory lush with prairie grasses, muddy rivers, and wide-open sky, the setting of this novel is thoughtfully described and adds depth and meaning to the story. The setting, with its rugged and perilous features, provides myriad opportunities for the characters in this book to face their fears and nurture their faith. As they overcome obstacles that threaten their dreams and goals, these characters are moving and memorable. Their authenticity and vulnerability is compelling.
With a writing talent that seems effortless, Ms. Hedlund has successfully crafted a story that is worthwhile and engrossing. Page after page, there are plenty of surprises and unexpected moments that are truly thrilling and delightfully endearing. Scenes filled with danger are balanced by scenes of hope, and the story is strengthened by enduring themes of courage, resiliency, forgiveness, trust, and second chances.

I love the setting of traveling to Colorado in the 19th century. Linnea is highly intelligent with her botany research, but has a tendency to find herself in dangerous mishaps while in the wilderness- some were humorous but others were more harrowing. Flynn's role of unofficial bodyguard allows for frequent proximity, while driving cattle and exploring the terrain. Of course, his secret arrangement with her father foreshadows the misunderstanding that will inevitably come... I enjoyed this journey and adventure with the McQuaids and getting to know the members in the family more, as well as the complex dynamics between them. I really felt for Flynn with the pressures that are on him, and the expectations that he struggles with. Linnea is also trying to prove herself, but while some accidents can be explained, others cannot, bringing an element of mystery and suspense. The romance was a little too up and down for me, but I did enjoy the spiritual thread of faith woven in.

I loved this book so much! I have been looking forward to this book since reading A Cowboy for Keeps and the wait was totally worth it.
Flynn and Linnea are both complex characters with trauma in their pasts and some healing to be done. I loved their interactions and how they were always willing to give the other what they needed most. Their chemistry was off the charts from the beginning but I appreciated how their feelings deepened as they grew to know each other and fell in love with the other for so much more than their physical attraction!

What an interesting unique story! Flynn is heading West with his brother and sister to meet his estranged brother, driving cattle. They meet up with a group of scientists heading the same way. The beginning starts with quite the action! Linnea is a scientist and not very observant to her surroundings when she’s observing fauna and floral. As you can imagine this can cause some issues traveling the Santa Fe Trail. There are some twists and turns and things each character overcomes. An enjoyable read and also a reminder of what those who settled the West went through, Danger, weather, Supply shortages. I received a copy of this book from the publisher. I have been looking forward to Flynn's story since meeting the McQuaid family in the first book in this earlier this year. This was a fun and exciting read as it has mystery, romance, and an exciting journey all within the book's pages. I really liked Linnea, she was such a fun and unusual character and brought a lot to the story. I enjoyed this story and I can't wait for the next McQuaid family book!
