The HellBeast King #1

The Hellbeast King

Rate this book
It all started with that night.
The night I made my biggest mistake.
The night I entered their world.
The day I snuck into the infamous Devil’s Ring Fight Club.
I had followed my cousin Amelia, who turned out not to be quite as innocent as I first believed. In fact, it turned out she didn’t live in the same world as I did… Not at all. I knew this the moment I entered his kingdom.
My world changed the moment he found me. He gave me a warning that night. He told me if he ever found me again then next time, he wouldn’t be so quick in letting me escape him.
His little Red Riding Hood.
It was a threat I took seriously as it was only my dreams that took me back to that place. That took me back to him.
That was until they came for me. The Hell Hounds that infiltrated my peaceful world and started the hunt.
And there was only one man I knew that had the power to stop them. And my price to pay, was the promise he made me.
That if he ever found me in his demonic fight club again… He was keeping me.
Meaning I only had two choices left, to become the hunted or to make a deal with Hell’s greatest Hunter…
The HellBeast King…
Jared Cerberus.

I couldn't, I'm sorry. This is probably completely my fault but I didn't realise this was related to the Afterlife series and the MFC had a massive internal monologue surmising the storyline of Afterlife and the family links between her and Fae (nickname for Amelia). On account of I read a sample of Afterlife on kindle, hated it so didn't bother with the book. Which was only after I read the first book in Amelias series which I hated. In fairness I did manage to finish that book regardless of how much I loathed an incredibly selfish immature 27 yr old Amelia, but only because I had paid for it. This one popped up on my Facebook feed with a low as preorder special, the summary sounded interesting, it was late so I clicked. If it had stated what world this was actually set in I wouldn't have bothered. Saw the authors name thought, 'Give her another go, its a new series', nope should have known better. So this is completely on me. My bias towards the other books has killed off all my interest in this. Up until the 7% mark before I knew the links it was ok, not great but ok enough where I thought the writing would maybe pick up further along. I struggled with her inner monologue which totally ruins a book for me and when the main character is talking to herself out loud with nobody around like this-

"Wow... homely"

"Bloody hell, are they series?"

"Okay, time to move on now"

"Please don't be a dungeon in the basement, please don't be a dungeon in basement"

"Well, Fae, you couldn't have disappeared, so where are you?"

"That's strange"

That was all in the 7% mark on my kindle. Not the first 7%, the actual part marked 7%. If you have no problem with the way she speaks you'll be fine but it's not for me.

I liked the cover picture though, probably what sucked me in and made me think it looked interesting.

Well, this was another new author to me and I had no idea going into this book that I needed to have read several books in her other series' to have known the background storyline of this book. That recommendation should have been somewhere in the book's story description. Strike 1 against author for neglecting to mention. And then for the book to just end in a cliffhanger with no information in the advertising book blurb that the story would be continued in other books in this new series made it Strike 2 for me.

It's my fault for not researching the author and her style of writing a bit further before getting the book. Apparently, she's one of those authors that fancies the trend that I have named as "The Drawn-Out Cliffhanger Continuation Money Books".

I had some real doubts if I was going to continue reading the book after the first couple of chapters as there are several syntax and grammatical errors (Strike 3) throughout. Then there was the craziness of the story jumping from past to present when it really had no effect at all to the key storyline. What was the point? I think an editor and beta readers would have tremendously helped with those issues.

Now after just finishing it; I am not real sure why I wasted the last two hours on reading this book. It had so much potential but never made it past a low mediocre standing. The absolute killer for me was that there was absolutely no romance between the main characters...heck there was "No Romance" whatsoever in it to me. So, I am not sure why it is advertised as a Paranormal Romance!

Honestly, in my opinion skip this one...there are many more authors out there who really do write "Romance" and even add a kiss or two into their Paranormal stories.

Highly frustrating and disappointing read. The heroine rambles too much and her thoughts are very disjointed to the point it takes away from the story. It feels like I should have read other books to better understand the world building. There was no romance in this story, it felt like a prequel. One of my least fav tropes was a big part of the story: keeping the heroine in the dark about everything even when it is clear that she shouldn't because dangerous things STILL happen around her or to her. At that point it was irresponsible. I could understand why if she was 18 but not a 30 year old woman.

EDIT: Didn't realize this was gonna end on cliffhanger and didn't realize there are other books connected to this series. This book was meant for ppl who are already fans, not new readers.

in serious need of proofreader

This book is all over the place. The first thing I noticed was how wordy it was. The heroine “thinks” everything to death for pages and pages. It also comes off as a young adult book. It should list YA in the description. In the beginning I really thought it was interesting but as it progressed nothing really happened. It was stagnant with the heroine overthinking everything to the point of absolute boredom. The heroine is also supposed to be 30 yet she’s a untouched, barely kissed virgin. Seriously? And who cares about a Ford pickup truck? Why is that made into such importance in the story? So why doesn’t this author use a proof reader? She uses the word whilst through the book. There are run on sentences, incorrect period placements and incorrect verb tenses. There are also places where a sentence just ends and a new sentence starts. Like someone was deleting a sentence and didn’t: instead they left a few words and combined it with another sentence. I find this irritating. If the author didn’t think her writing was important enough to proof read than I shouldn’t have to read a rough draft and then not make a comment! Will never read this author again.

I just finished reading ‘The Hellbeast King,” which is Book 1 of ‘The Hellbeast King Series’ by Stephanie Hudson! WHAT AN INCREDIBLE 🤩🤩 START to what I’m sure will be a FANTASTIC 🙌🏻 series! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

Warning ⚠️ ! If you have not read the other books in the Afterlife world that take place chronologically before this book (Afterlife Saga, Transfusion saga, and the Afterlife Academy series,) you may want to stop reading this right now as there may be spoilers!

OK!!! THIS BOOK. WOW 🤩🤩🤩! So if you have read any of my other reviews, you may start to think that I’m just a passionate gal. Yes, that is true. But! I ONLY write reviews for books I LOVE ❤️❤️❤️. I do not write them for one’s I don’t. As my good mama says, “If you don’t have something nice to say, keep your mouth shut!” And that’s advice I try to live by!

So back to THIS BOOK. It FAR exceeded my expectations!! First off, I think it was such a big boon as a reader to read The Reaper’s Book (Afterlife Academy Book 3,) prior to this book! That book really set the stage (no pun intended 😜) for Ella’s adventure to London when she was 18 and this book really picks up right with her POV from that time. When I read The Reaper’s Book right before this book, I hoped 🤞🏻& prayed 🙏🏻 that we would hear Ella’s POV in this book! And BOY DO WE 🥳🥳🥳! We thought we knew all there was to entering the Devil’s Ring! But surprise… Ella snuck in a different way and it’s just FABULOUS. I wish I could have taken a ride with her down to the bowels of the Hellbeast’s lair 👹! Super creepy & cool!

Next, we fast forward 11 years and get to know her as an adult. And let me tell you, she’s shaping up to be my favorite Afterlife world FMC! Each FMC just gets better and better in the Afterlife world!!! I love me some Amelia & yeah she has some super geeky and smart moments in Transfusion, but man… a few scenes in Hellbeast with Ella and I was like… YESSSSSSSS Ella! Praise the good lord, you are using that brain 🧠 of yours, girl! So many times I read books and I think… JUST CALL HIM… or ASK FOR HELP… or GO THERE NOW! And man, this girl did it AS I THOUGHT IT! It was so refreshing to not want to strangle a FMC for once 😆! I actually said (out loud) ‘You Go Girl!’ & fist pumped 👊🏻 the air during a certain scene. All I got to say is, thank goodness for social media, right 😉?! Teeheehee😁 Ok…ok… fine. Yes, there was ONE scene that she wasn’t using that smart head of hers and it did have disastrous consequences, but really… I can give her a pass. The poor gal was confused 🤔. And when you read the book, you’ll understand she certainly has a great reason to not know what the hell is going on!!

I was also super excited we get a NEW hottie in this book with brown sugar eyes 👀 ! Brown sugar baby! Who doesn’t love brown sugar?! Oh yes ☺️! But speaking of hotties… Oh boy!!! Ladies & gents, our very own Hellbeast is SMOKIN 🔥🔥🔥! Did you love Dominic Draven!? How about Lucius Septimus???? What would you think about a cross between the two?!?!? BECAUSE YES! That’s what this BEAST OF A MAN is! He’s got the dominating, strength of Dom with the snarky, bad-a$s of Lucius! Alphahole anyone? 🔥🔥🔥 YES PLEASE 🙋🏻‍♀️. Need I say more???! 😁😁😁

Honestly, this book just EXCEEDED all my expectations! It gave us some answers while leaving us with many more! It had the whole A-Team feel to it at times when the oldies but goodies show up for some great humor! It also surprised me in that it really had a great classic werewolf 🐺 thriller vibe to it! That was completely unexpected (even though it is called Hellbeast 😆). This really was not a sleepy PRN… it was loaded with action and hot romantic angst between our nature-loving FMC and our beastly, snarky MMC! I cannot wait to see how they CRASH together in future books! 🙌🏻

This was a FABULOUS book and could very well turn into being my FAVORITE of the Afterlife world sagas!

You hit another homerun Stephanie Hudson! You are wracking them up like crazy from me, so I might as well give you another…. Atta Girl 💪🏻!!!

2.5*
I really wish i could have given this higher rating but the editing was horrible. Grammatical errors, the wrong word being used, it all took me out of the story and drove me nuts. The world is rich as this is set in the same world as her other series, so it was interesting and I wanted to know more. Instead we are in the h's head and she doesn't know anything and constantly changes her mind and goes on about inconsequential things. On the fence about reading the next book which is out at the end of the month

Jared…The handsome Hellbeast King!

If you have a love for paranormal romance books, then never, turn down the opportunity to read a Stephanie Hudson book! I have read so many of her books and her mind never ceases to amaze me. Her imagination must be endless!

Ella tried to stay away…she really did. Even as her traitors mind and body craved him every night for years. She knew just enough of his demon beast world to have a healthy fear of it. Though at times she seems to lose all sense of her good judgment and wanders into life threatening situations. And ten years later it has caught up with her. She thought she knew….but she didn’t, not really. Now she knows the true meaning of fear. If only a certain lusty emotion was attached to the source of her fear!

The Hellbeast King begins 3 months after the events in Queen of Sinns. New readers can join this new series regardless. Fans of Armelia and Lucius will be happy to see them both again; if only as a brief guest appearance.

Ella is so very different from what I initially suspected. She is strong, fierce, and seems to have a terrible health secret. 11 years after meeting Jared for the first time, their paths finally cross again. Overshadowed by hellhounds, both have to overcome their prejudices in order to be able to fight against these offspring of hell. It is questionable whether the `fragile` Ella will physically manage this.

I liked the new entry into Jared and Ella's story. However, Ella's mysterious illness leaves me worried. Hopefully the 11 long years were not too long for a HEA together.

The Hellbeast King (book 1) by Stephanie Hudson is a 5 ⭐️ read.
When Ella follows her younger cousin into a dark pub in London the last thing she expects to find is a hidden supernatural world, if she hadn’t seen some of the things she did with her own eyes she never would’ve believed it. 11 years later her dreams are still haunted by that night.
Jared Cerberus is the King of the Hellbeasts, he runs an underground fight club for demons AND he hates humans, so when he finds human Ella in his club he’s not happy.
This book is an spin off from the Afterlife saga (12 book series, I highly recommend) and The Transfusion saga (12 book series, I really struggled to get past book 5 of this series) I would suggest reading the Afterlife saga first as there is a lot explained in that series that will help you understand things easier.

Absolutely brilliant

Oh I’ve waited for Jared for so long. He definitely was worth the wait. Sexy. Broody. Powerhouse alpha male.
Ella has been dreaming of the man she met when she was a teenager. He’s sexy. He’s hot. He’s all her wet dreams in one huge hellbeast of a man and he terrifies her.
Having had her dreams of being a dancer shattered when she was young and being diagnosed with a rare disease, Ella decides to follow her second love of nature and animals. All is right in her life until she is hunted by monsters from her worst fears. Only one man can protect her. Can she go back there? Can Jared keep her safe? Read on for the rollercoaster ride of your life. I loved every page and tried to savour the book but I devoured it. Going back to re read and savour now. It’s that good

Warning: This is a cliffy duet.

This book is all just set up for the second book. There is very little interaction between Jared and Ella. This whole book is basically very detailed world building with a lot of frustrating non answers. I have not read any of the prior series' books and although I could tell that I was getting fed high-level background information from those books, I didn't feel like not knowing more specific storyline details impacted my understanding of this story and the dynamics, except when Ella was at the bar with Amelia and Lucius. <-- I found them very annoying.

I am going to read the second book and I'm annoyed as hell that I picked up a duet without realizing it.

I’m sorry, but not a fan. I started this because of how high the book was rated. Everything seemed to drag on. I skipped a ton of unnecessary descriptions. There was a lot of build up of certain plot points that were never resolved or revisited. It seemed like there were several times you thought something was a large part of the plot in one chapter and then it was never addressed again? Very confusing. I did give several books in this series a try because I thought it would get better but this series was just not for me.

Horribly disappointing. I rarely DNF a book (only 3 in the last 100), but man this book takes the cake. The writing is HORRIBLE. Every single minutia of detail is described in truly excruciating detail. The content could easily be reduced to 25% of what is actually written in terms of being applicable. What a waste of words! It was agony. And to top it off, the author seems obsessed with exclamation points. Like literally, every single paragraph and sometimes every other sentence.

I honestly cannot comprehend how this book was highly rated. Please don’t waste your time!

The blurb sounded very good, and the basic plot was good, but the book was a huge letdown. This book really needed to be edited better than it was before it was released. I made myself finish this book as I hate leaving a story unfinished, but I just don’t have the heart to struggle through a second book

I can honestly say that I devoured this book.

The author grabbed me by the face and didn’t let go until I was gasping for breath at the final page.

We have Ella,a human, who follows her cousin to an underground club filled with a bunch of beings she thought were fantasy.

And then we have Jared, one of the Dark Kings, the King of Hellbeasts, the guardian of the Gates of Hell, who even though loathes humans, can’t help the magnetic pull towards Ella.

Even though he warns that he won’t let go a second time,Ella finds herself in his world again after being attacked by Hellhounds, mortal enemies of Hellbeasts.

There were allusions to the other two series in the world, that involve Ella’s aunt and cousin respectively, but I wouldn’t know what they mean as I haven’t read them.

The story ends when there is a showdown between Hellbeasts and Hellhounds in a park in Germany, where Ella sees Jared nearby transform to his demonic form, but he stops when he sees her fear and attempts to escape.

Some people would say that she puts herself in unnecessary danger and makes stupid life threatening choices, but honestly, finding out you are the bottom of the supernatural pecking order and knowing half your family is something other than you can freak a person out.Add to that Ella’ sense of duty and responsibility for her job,and other people’s efforts to tell her as little as possible can frustrate someone to the point of foolishness.

Even though you do get absorbed in the book, there are pointless descriptions of places and items, like the club in Munich. And I especially hate whenever heroines describe themselves and make it look like they’re average when every male sniffs after them.It flows smoother when a person’s looks is described by someone else. The descriptions felt a bit like a Wattpad fic.

And let’s not forget the typos and wrongly placed words.I read with a tip-ex and a pen.

I will still read the second book though.

Favourite quotes:

“Demons and Humans, which were the worst ones?Did it mean that it wasn’t what you were that defined you, but what kind of soul dictated your decisions and guided your moral compass? Were we just as bad as some creature born in Hell?”

“I knew that there was and always would be,a clear line drawn in the sand. One where I was firmly stood on the human side of things.”

“It was a shame I couldn’t hide myself from it.A truth I couldn’t ignore,no matter how much I wished to.I wanted this man like my next breath, and then in the next I would be using it to curse his very existence.A crazy mixed up side of me that I had quickly come to loathe as I knew it would burn me whole and leave me hollow.
It would leave me empty.”

How to review these books…These books are enjoyable, if incredibly long. The MC has ridiculously long-winded internal dialogue that states way too much. For example, you get thoughts like I had an ache in my core, because he did something to me like no other man could; he turned me on, as in he made me really horny because he was so masculine and sexy. That is not a quote from the book…just something I made up to give a picture…but I’m sure it’s not too far off. It’s just unnecessary and makes the novels at least twice as long as they need to be. What’s more frustrating is that you have to wade through all this unnecessary internal dialogue to have very little actually happen.

The external dialogue feels unbelievable at best, like the characters only exist to interact with each other and fit some stereotypical mold, which is fine, but hard to invest in. If these were short little throw away novels, it would be easier to accept. But they’re super long and you would hope for more character building and development, but two novels in and they’re stagnant and one dimensional. I think the author is trying to make the MC feel quirky, but she’s really more on the side of obnoxious and immature, despite the fact that she’s 29. I guess age doesn’t define maturity…but she seems to regress the more you read.

Also, where the heck is she from?? The start of the novel says Liverpool, and the MC speaks as though she’s English, but she’s confused about British commonalities like chips vs French fries. The author also writes Americans as though they speak like Brits, ie saying things like “I’m stood here” vs “I’m standing here”, or “I’m sat here” vs “I’m sitting here”. It wouldn’t be as frustrating if I could understand where the MC was originally from before she moved maybe?

For the most part, they’re well written, they’re just not my cup of tea. Not sure if I’ll finish them. All that dialogue isn’t likely to be to worth the one or two events that happen per novel, and slow doesn’t begin to describe the burn between the MC and her love interest.

…and don’t get me started on her love interest, the jerk himself whose only redeeming quality seems to be that he knows how to use the word f**k in any setting and the fact that he’s hot and Uber masculine with his well trimmed beard and silky man bun that he only needs a bar of soap to keep cleaned because he’s too manly to believe in things like shampoo or conditioner.

And I really need to stop here or I’ll keep going on about the offensive way Russians speak English (offensive to the Russian who sounds illiterate when he clearly converses in English all the time), or the absurd amount of nicknames (is my life just boring, or do people really have a million annoying nicknames for each other??), or how people laugh so dang hard at EVERYTHING. Also, not all gay men want to gush and be besties. The stereotypes in this series are actually offensive.

The Hellbeast King is the highly anticipated first book of the Hellbeast King Series. The series can be enjoyed as a standalone series by those who are new to the amazing world created by Stephanie Hudson or by those who have already read her work. If you haven't read her previous works such as the Afterlife Saga or Transfusion Saga then I would recommend starting with the Afterlife Saga, then the Transfusion Saga before moving on to the Hellbeast Series. Though, if you do want to reas the Hellbeast King Series first then you will still understand exactly what is going on!

After that explanation let me tell you what I think about this book. I was hooked straight away! The first chapter was fantastic, opening the story well and introducing us to the main characters. I really connected with Ella as she is a Park Ranger and a HUGE animal lover and, though unfortunately I am not a Park Ranger, I would do anything in my power to help an animal in need so I instantly liked her character. She's also as stubborn as hell, something else I have in common much to my fiancé's dismay.

Jared Cerberus who is Ella's love interest is also a very stubborn, very strong and super sexy alpha male. Somebody I am craving to learn more about. Luckily, the 2nd and 3rd book of the series are out so I can do this as soon as I've finished this review.

What I have discovered during my reading journey is a lot of the time, when authors write a lot of books, it seems that their characters personalities end up being so similar and the storyline ends up being pretty much the same too. So, upon reading The Hellbeast King I was very happy to discover that Ella and Jared are written differently to the characters in The Afterlife Saga and The Transfusion Saga as well as the plot being different too!

This book is aggressively Hot Topic.

The target demographic for this book is emotionally immature millennial women who watch a lot of Hazbin Hotel, Helluva Boss, and Supernatural who would go to Universal Studio's Halloween Horror Nights a BUNCH if they could. I'm not hating, I just feel like you know the exact type of person I'm talking about when I say that.

It's bad, but I liked it? The main character is annoying, and while it gets better from the first few chapters (in which she's a teenager), she never stops rambling. So if you like your protagonists to internally monologue for a minute before going "ugh why am I even thinking about this!?" every five pages, this book is for you.

Alternatively, if you're the type of person that gets put off by spelling errors, I can't recommend this book to you. It's riddled with them.

The author is not the best at posing flashbacks, and her sentence structure is not very diverse. The prologue reads like something I would've have written for Tumblr in 2010. But it's one of those books where it's like, "yeah, but I didn't hate it though." Making the love interest a Hellbeast named JARED was a choice. Catch me dead before I swoon over a book boyfriend named JARED.

Definitely for the girlies who like their men big and tough af but gentle and sweet with their women.

It's cringe. I can't recommend it. I got it for free, and I'll probably give the second book a swing with my next Kindle unlimited subscription. Side note: I just found out from other reviews that this is no where near the author's first book. More like her 30th. It's actually a spin-off series. The quality is just not there for someone that's published THAT much.

⭐️☆☆☆☆ – Unfortunately, not for me

I always appreciate the effort that goes into writing a book, and I can see why The Hellbeast King has found an enthusiastic fanbase. The premise was intriguing, and I was excited to dive into a world of dark fantasy, forbidden desire, and high stakes.

However, I personally struggled with this one. The overuse of filter words ("I saw," "I felt," "I thought") created a sense of distance that made it hard for me to fully engage with the characters or immerse myself in the story. Additionally, the lack of clear structure and frequent rambling inner monologue made the pacing feel uneven, and I found it difficult to stay grounded in the plot.

While I recognize that some readers enjoy a more stream-of-consciousness style, it just didn’t work for me. I truly wanted to enjoy this book, but ultimately, it wasn’t a good fit for my tastes. That said, I wish the author and series continued success, and I hope others find the magic here that I, unfortunately, did not.

3.5 Stars...

The idea of the story is great and definitely an attention grabber. I did get immediately pulled into the book. However, I started skimming the further I got in. In some areas it just had too much detail and about a lot of stuff that didn't really add to the story, I think that it took away from the story. I would of loved to seen more interaction between Jared and Ella because I don't think that there is enough build up in this book for them. I feel like they took a back burner to the extra wording in the book. I know there is a second book coming out and hopefully it will focus more on them than the book being filled with soooo much descriptive detail about everything!! Detail is good but only to a point and only when it doesn't start to pull you away from the actual story and what is about.

That being said, I will definitely read the next book and hopefully it will give us more of Jared and Ella

Awesome!!

I’ve been putting off starting this series because I know I’ll burn through it just like I have the others. And I was right. Book one started and finished today. Man!!!
I think Jared has turned into one of my favorites!
I can almost picture Ella’s face as she wanders around the club when she followed Amelia. And then later? When he goes full King of Hellbeasts in front of her??? Sweet!
I am SO looking forward to consuming this series!

Help bending

Really enjoyed this world. Still a lot to discover. Definitely can wait to continue the journey between Ella and Jared. Still lots to discover about both. I would like to know the health issue that Ella has. I'm leaning toward a fragile bone type of illness. What will Jared do once he finds out? Will be protect Ella and keep her closer? Try and find a cure? Can't wait to find out! Definitely recommend.

A cool story with a romantic twist!

This was a good book if you looked beyond the amount of details there were. The book started out slow and dragging with useless details but when it started to get good it finished one high note and left me wanting the rest of Jared and Red's story!
