The story continues

A very good follow up to book one and I found it very easy to jump right in. It's great fun to witness the same events happening from different sides and points of view. The author stays true to what we have come to understand are the characters personalities and you will enjoy hearing their inner thoughts. Bummer I have to wait until 2022 for the next book!

Opening this book, you find yourself transported to the early 16th century. You can feel the chill from the foggy London air. You can feel the warmth from the crackling fire. You can smell the 'smells' that were ever-present in that time period. That one of the smells is just a male from the Howard clan is another matter.

The author is gifted with scene creation. You get such an accurate description of a drawing room or a dining hall, you will think you are there. The life and times of the Court

The day a Howard gives up will be the one when England ceases to exist...

But Thomas Howard would do well to remember that Dame Fortune was a fickle mistress, and what she gave today she could just so easily take away tomorrow…

With a historian’s insight and an author’s understanding of what makes history worth reading, Vivienne Brereton has presented her readers with an utterly enthralling story about the House of Howard in the reign of Henry VIII. In her fabulous new release, Beware the Lurking

Beware the Lizard Lurking is the second book in Vivienne Brereton’s House of the Red Duke series which follows the fortunes of the House of Howard and the 2nd Duke of Norfolk, the elderly Thomas Howard.

While Phoenix Rising, the first book, ranged over the years between 1497 and 1520, Beware the Lizard Lurking follows a strict chronology between January and July 1513. It begins where Phoenix Rising left off, with a marriage in Cornwall, and ends with Henry VIII’s invasion of France. The cast of c

“Beware the Lizard Lurking” is the second offering in this author’s incredible Tudor series, a lavishly detailed historical novel that is as entertaining as it is immersive.

You are immediately brought into the story, set in 1513, where a clandestine wedding is about to unfold. The one person who can’t know about it is Henry VIII. Guests arrive at the castle uninvited, which puts a spin on things to come. Lord Treasurer Howard advises the king to avoid a holy war with France, but Wolsey, the King

What happened to the recipes? 😱

I was looking forward to some more barmy Tudor dishes to try out on my unsuspecting husband. He wasn’t too keen on Thomas Wolsey’s Hyppocras. To be absolutely honest, I think this novel flowed a great deal better without the recipes, as it kept me focused on the story at hand, rather than pulling me away from the book so that I could rummage through my cupboard for ingredients I knew I did not have. I really do hope that at some point Vivienne Brereton writes a Tud

Beware the Lizard Lurking follows the machinations of Thomas Howard, Earl of Surrey, to ensure his family remains one of the most powerful in England. It is the second book in The House of the Red Duke series and comes with a daunting cast of characters. However, for those like me who haven't read the first book, there is a brief summary of what has gone before and a list of characters and their ages at the beginning of 1513, the year in which the novel is set. Both of which are very helpful.

Having read the first book in Vivienne Brereton’s beguiling series, I was really looking forward to reading Beware the Lizard Lurking (The House of the Red Duke, Book 2). I have to admit that Beware the Lizard Lurking is one of the best depictions that I have ever read of the Tudor era and its principal players.

The Howards are once again centre stage—and what a conniving and power-crazed family they turned out to be! This excessive need for power amazed me. They would literally stop at nothing t

Born near historic Winchester in the UK, I have been passionate about the Tudors for as long as I can remember. This led to a degree in Medieval History at university and the growing desire to write a novel. However, life took over somewhat and only after stays, short and long, in six countries I called home did I finally settle down to finish my novel.
Words have always played an important part i
