Chaos, this book is absolute chaos & I loved it. I love a book that doesn’t take itself too seriously and leans into the fun that can be had with the fantasy genre. It is the perfect mix of interesting, engaging plot twists and simply divine spice.
The plot follows Arienna & Richard. Arienna is a brownie (fairy without wings) & Richard is the fairy king who has to take a wife. Arienna finds herself imprisoned in Richard’s palace after wandering into mortal lands drunk to save her pet wasp (YUP). As per the delightful rules of the marriage of convenience trope she is offered the option of marrying Richard to escape certain death as punishment or so she thinks.
Richard is your typical MMC, he’s grumpy, doesn’t want to take a wife & isn’t very becoming to Arienna when they first meet. But there is a slight hiccup when it comes to his indifference, he and Arienna are lifemates. They both feel the undeniable pull instantly making both of their plans much more complicated. With Arienna planning to get rid of Richard before he can get rid of her their feelings only complicate things.
Honestly the whole thing is madness, pure chaotic madness but I really enjoyed that aspect. It pulls some magical realism into the plot where despite being fae they have modern/real life things that they do. The whole thing feels like a fever dream until it doesn’t…
The sweet Arienna discovers she rather quite ✨likes✨ her husbands rough treatment of her & the way to his heart is discovering more of that. How trust builds their relationship is chefs kiss & you unexpectedly start to root for Richard! The spice is written to perfection, including very kinky, yet vocally consented to dungeon fun.
I would really recommend this if you’re looking for a quick, super funny spicy read. This honestly had me laughing out loud so many times but then also breathless the next moment. So excited for the next one to come out!
Favourite quotes:
Oh gods, I’m never going to try murder again. This is way too stressful.
“I’m not risking my women for wasps.”
She paled and I shook my head. No wonder she’d come back after how I’d treated her last night. She befriended wasps. In comparison, I was a fucking treat.
Her voice wavered. Mine came out on a growl. He’d hurt her. And so I would hurt him in return.
Removing Arienna’s arm from around me, I stepped forward. “By insulting my wife, you insulted me. You insulted the Raza kingdom because she is now our queen.”
“And so I challenge you, Karl the Dumbass, to face me inside a fairy ring.”
“So you have two options. You can either accept my challenge to enter a fairy ring, or…” I paused just to make him squirm. “You can tell me how to woo her.”
The darkness consumed all of it, stripping me bare, leaving me just as a woman in love with a man who was hurting.
She’d killed me. My own wife…
He drew a curve at the top of the line, and my breath caught when I realised he was scratching an R into my skin. An M followed it. Richard Morningstar. My body was his.
