“Fragments of Shattered Mind” is a collection of poems about the author’s personal journey with depression, PTSD, and anxiety. On her darkest days she felt as if she were at the bottom of a long forgotten well unable to climb out. Writing became a therapeutic way to express her thoughts when she felt she had no voice to speak.
One of the hardest things to talk about is what goes on inside your own head. You face the daily fear that no one will understand or that you'll sound crazy. This is especially true when dealing with trauma.
And that's what's so special about this poetry collection. It's a journey, and a dark one, through one woman's battle with depression and anxiety. It's her darkest days, mixed with the sunshine of a better tomorrow.
Jae Vel does an amazing job evoking emotions and taking the reader along for the ride with her, through the ups, downs, and hairpin turns of her mental health journey. And while the voyage may be personal for the poet, the fact is that we'll all recognize a few stops along the way. And that realization that we are not alone is worth the price of this book alone.
I connected to many of the poems on a very personal level. They are very touching and raw. I also enjoyed the very direct language and tone, as well as the aura of redemption and renewal pervading the collection.
Loved how the hurt and pain was captured to a T, then the growth, and warmth that comes with self love as we pull ourselves up and out of darkness. This is a great collection.
Each Sunday, I pick up a poetry book to read, aiming to digest poetic words and reset my soul to tackle the week ahead. This week, I chose 'Fragments of a Shattered Mind.' Vel's book of poems gave me much-needed emotional recovery. Sad, deep, dark, optimistic. My personal favorites, the poems that resonated with my the most, are: 'Me,' 'There is Hope,' 'Anxiety,' and 'A Promise to Self.'
Yes, there are little hearts doodled beside those poems so I can more easily find them again to reread.
I highly recommend you pick up a copy of 'Fragments of a Shattered Mind.'
Tears Came . . and this happens only when words touch my Soul!
Through her words, I could feel what Jae experienced . A wonderful message of hope, of coming out the other side, for those going through something similar now. Well done Jae.
