The Maze Genealogy Investigators are on the trail of a cold case, following another message from the medium Claire Lewis. A disturbing discovery at a ruined country house and the unearthing of family papers provide the missing clues to the fate of police detective William McRoberts who disappeared without trace in the 1870s. Maggie and Nick travel to Liverpool and North Wales to see if they can crack open the case and finally be able to tell the McRoberts family what happened to their ancestor. Meanwhile, Zelah is hot on the trail of the Quinn family. She has a plan to bring down Kennet Quinn’s business empire. As both cases progress, Maggie, Nick and Zelah come to realise that everything is connected, and past and present will collide, in chain of events that could damage more than one of them.
Originally from South Wales, I now live in North Wales, close to Conwy and the sea. My passion for genealogy began when I helped out my mother with internet researching on her family and I became engrossed ( my family would say fanatical!). The Maze Investigations series has allowed me to combine my passion with my long held ambition to be a creative writer. I have recently added the first book in a new series. The series is called The Curiosity Club of St Foy and the book is 'All Gone'. My plan is to publish 2 books a year at least, one in each series. Update! I have recently published the fourth book in the Curiosity Club of St Foy series. It's called "The Cult of Flowers". And I have formed a collaboration with South Wales write, John F. Wales. Together we have produced a new series called "The Cardiff Newshound Investigates". Book one, "Death on a Gravestone" is now available in all media, and book two will be available shortly. It's been ten years since the publication of "Three Times Removed", the first book in the Maze series. I'll soon be starting on book no. 10. What a journey!
Very enjoyable! Author M.K.Jones has intrigued me again and caused me to stay up late reading. This is the continuing story of a group of Welsh genealogists and their clients. The characters are my old friends by now and it is great fun to watch the relationships among the group grow. The later books have gotten a bit dark at times due to the crimes revealed by their research. Very enjoyable!
Enjoyed this story, having read the previous four Maze books. However, as it's some time since I read the others, I got a bit lost with the various characters and events in the ongoing back story. This time the team are trying to find out how and why the skeleton of a policeman who supposedly drowned in the River Mersey at Liverpool in the late 1800s turned up in a deep hole on a private estate on Anglesey. Lots of clues and red herrings and some good detective work with the team cracking the case. Especially interesting was the inclusion of a true historical figure, Mrs Josephine Butler, of whom I had not heard. Would have given five stars but for the multitude of typographical and grammatical errors in the Kindle version I read. Looking forward to the next case.
I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and am looking forward to the next book due soon! The connection to COVID-19 was a nice touch. I don't usually read fiction that involves current history. I liked the plot twists with Nick's son and Jack's increasing presence as a helper in the investigations. And I must thank the author for being more diligent with the editing. My one request is to get rid of the f-word for good. It's jarring, which is probably the point, but it interrupts the reading process because it is such an offensive word. I, and I suspect many others, can gauge the intensity of someone's feelings just fine without it. It adds nothing to the story, and as such is a liability.
Another great book from MK Jones. A follow on story from The Politian. Maggie, Zelah and Nick investigate the disappearance of former Policeman turned Private Investigator from Liverpool. His remains are found buried deep in the grounds of old mansion in Anglesey. The Maze investigations team, find evidence of prostitution and sex trafficking along the way to finding the identity of the murderer. Surprisingly this case also uncovers the same going on in the present day by one of the murders descendents. I skipped the small snippets in the book where the current pandemic was mentioned. I was disappointed that it is mentioned in a fictional book so soon. Sorry its just my opinion.
Another brilliantly written book by M. K. Jones. I enjoy the way that she interweaves real historic events and people with fictional characters. Always, after completing these books, I come away learning more than I knew before about what happened a few centuries ago. I have thoroughly enjoyed this series and look forward to reading the final book.
I have read all the books in this series. I'm sorry to say that I found the first one a little uncomfortable with the gross thing with her face melting off. Not my idea of a genealogical mystery, however I have grown to love all the characters and looking forward to the next book. I especially like the involvement of Jack and Alice helping in the research. Suz
The plot was good and generally it was a good read BUT, the way in which Maggie seemingly knew the beneficiaries of a will simply by looking at the probate is downright incorrect! Unless she had sent for the wills (and the fact she knew immediately) she would not know; the published probate gives the executor(s) NOT the beneficiaries!
The 3 stars are more my fault than the author’s. I read this book out of order. I’m not sure how I missed it but I sure did. I had already finished the next two books in the series before I knew this book was out there. I enjoy this series and absolutely recommend it but make sure you read them in order!
This series is super and I love the characters. Lots of twist and turns. Any yes there were a few typo and a few missing word. But, this series is well worth the read.
I love genealogy mysteries. I’ve read the previous 4 and this one didn’t disappoint. There’s always a couple of under stories that keep ones interest maintained. Can’t wait for the release of “The Soldier”
Maze Investigations is on the trail of the mysterious disappearance of a policeman during the 1870s. In the course of the investigation, they learn a lot about the treatment of women during that time. Many good ideas for genealogists as well as a good story.
This series continues to get better and better with each subsequent book! Once again I finished this book in record time. Great weaving of storyline and quirky characters.
Very well written book. There were some typographical errors that caused some disruption in certain areas, but the story was a compelling one. I really enjoyed this one.
Another I found hard to put down. I loved the way the story unfolded, twisted in places and I didn't realise how it was going to end until I got closer towards the end of the book. Such a good read if you are interested in researching family history.
Book five did not let down! What an intriguing story! With lots of mysterious happenings. And lots of suspense. And surprises! Don't want to give the story away but this is one of the best!
I didn't enjoy this book as much as I enjoyed the others. I think the Policeman's story didn't have as much punch as the previous tales. Of course I will be reading the rest of the series, as I am hooked on the characters.
I so enjoy this series. The mystery and intrigue is deep and twisting. The development in deep. I get a lot of ideas for my own ancestry searches by the methods used by Maze. The inter character play in never ending
I absolutely love this author and her unusual plots! Her characters have become old friends, and I want to read more, and more about them and their intricate work. Great read.
The story of Maze Investigations continues as they investigate the disappearance of a Victorian policeman, and try to follow in his footsteps, while at the same time avoiding current day enemies.
