Solon of Pergamon, healer of the great entertainment-warriors of a glittering age, turns detective when a cherished acquaintance is murdered. Torn between his growing love for a beguiling student and a dark secret that threatens imperial power, he must find a route into the human heart to uncover the truth. Classic storytelling in an unforgettable setting.
A healer to the empire’s most celebrated fighters is drawn into a deadly puzzle that threatens both his heart and the imperial order in McGrath's excellent mystery. Solon of Pergamon, physician to Rome’s prized gladiators, lives by the measured discipline of medicine and the cool logic of philosophy. When a beloved friend is slain, he lays aside his healer’s instruments and follows the trail of a killer, a path that winds from the blood and roar of the gladiatorial ring to the hushed corridors of imperial intrigue. Caught between the dangerous charm of a gifted student and a secret that could upend the uneasy truce between Greek custom and Roman might, he must weigh love against loyalty.
McGrath unfolds the mystery with the patience of a skilled anatomist. He layers political intrigue, philosophical debate, and the harsh realities of ancient medicine into a narrative that moves with the steady burn of a torch through catacombs. Streets, bathhouses, and training yards come alive with the smells and textures of a world poised between grandeur and decay, while Solon’s wry, skeptical voice gives the tale a modern pulse. The result is a murder mystery that is both cerebral and visceral. Lovers of well-crafted historical mysteries will be thrilled.
McGrath pairs his impressive lead with a challenging murder to unravel in his latest, a mystery set in the memorable setting of ancient era.
Solon of Pergamon, the chief physician at the munus, finds himself into the middle of a murder investigation after his much-loved, renowned mentor is found dead under suspicious circumstances. But getting to the heart of the murder is not easy, especially with the corruption rampant and sinister conspiracies at work. Torn between love and duty, Solon must choose wisely.
McGrath plausibly fleshes out his characters: the winning, self-sufficient and proud Solon should be able to sustain a long series in case McGrath decides to write more books, featuring him as the reluctant sleuth. The storyline is gripping and often intriguing, and McGrath does a brilliant job keeping both tension and suspense high as the plot careens into a series of twists.
Deeply atmospheric setting, multidimensional characters who are less than perfect but wear their foibles proudly, and intrigue keep the pages flying.
This entry should garner McGrath a slew of sophisticated classic mystery fans.
The Science of Medicine in the light of an Ancient Era
AP McGrath is not your everyday author. His greatest strength is the ability to blend historical facts and fiction in a way that makes it interesting to read. It might be well to point out the fact that the author studied photography. Therefore, it will not be surprising to understand the authors writing style and why he chooses to open his book with photographic prose. Again, if you are looking for a mystery theme, this book offers you the opportunity to experience it to the full. The author did a lot of justice with his synopsis and ensure that you are aware of what you will get in the book. At the center of this book are two characters you do not want to miss. They are Solon and Galen. Galen was a medical doctor to the gladiator of Pargamon before deciding to leave for Rome. Solon on the other hand is out to figure out the murderer of his medical teacher. While all investigations kept falling short of the answers he seeks, what is the next step forward? McGrath did justice to this great read.
I first heard about The Mystery of Healing from my Book Club Group, and I have to say, this book instantly grabbed my attention. A.P. McGrath does a fantastic job blending history, mystery, and human emotion into one compelling narrative. Solon of Pergamon, a healer to the gladiators, becomes more than just a doctor he is drawn into the role of detective when a close friend is murdered. The way McGrath paints the tension between Solon’s compassion, his growing love, and the secrets tied to imperial power is truly captivating. The historical setting feels vivid and alive, making me feel as if I was walking the streets of ancient Pergamon. I honestly can’t wait to finish reading the whole book it has all the makings of a classic page-turner!
A captivating mystery set in gladiator times. Solon of Pergamon a physician tries to solve the murder of his friend and former teacher, Diodotus of Miletus. Cadmus also a student of Diodotus is falsely accused of committing the murder. A. P. McGrath in 'The Mystery of Healing' portrays life in gladiator times while weaving a complex mystery. Not wanting to spoil the secrets of this mystery I am incline to say no more. Read this book you will be pleasantly surprised. This book was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
I couldn't stop reading, I couldn't stop thinking of the mind that wrote it. This is a wondrous book for the story, for the writers thoughts on love and life in a time I am not too familiar with. But this book made me look for more from the writer, maybe a continuation of this story but I couldn't find any. He has another book in modern times that I will read, hopefully I will like it as well.
This is a richly imagined and realistic walk through an Eastern province of the Roman Empire, centering on a truly unique main protagonist who is a physician to gladiators and other people victimized in the arena. I was fascinated by his medical knowledge, empathy and courage as he finds his way in through life. The characters have incredible depth, the scenes are well-described, and there is plenty of both action and soul searching. Definitely worth the read- I could not put it down!
Great story. Appealing characters. I really enjoyed this book. It is not great literature which while deeply satisfying usually can be a heavy emotional experience. This book was well written, the narrator is likeable the story unusual against the background of the Greek city of Pergamum under imperial Rome. Gladiators, philosophers, physicians, families separated and reunited. A terrific story to while away an evening
The Mystery of Healing is one of those rare novels that balances intelligent plotting with emotional depth. A.P. McGrath brings ancient Pergamon to life with vivid detail, and Solon the healer-turned-detective is a deeply thoughtful and complex protagonist. The story unfolds with elegance and intrigue, anchored in timeless questions of loyalty, love, and justice. A murder mystery set against gladiatorial arenas and philosophical debates? Brilliant. I couldn’t put it down.
I joined this read through our book club reader group after being intrigued by the book’s mysterious and powerful cover mockup. The story inside matched the promise. Solon is a rare kind of protagonist introspective, principled, and emotionally complex. McGrath does an excellent job capturing the fragility of power and the cost of truth. Though the pacing is measured, the tension builds meaningfully. A thoughtful and atmospheric novel with a satisfying conclusion.
I heard about The Mystery of Healing in our Book Club Group, and the premise immediately gripped me. A doctor in ancient Pergamon who becomes a detective? That alone is enough to spark curiosity. But it’s the emotional pull the tension between Solon’s growing affection for a student and the hidden forces of imperial powe that makes this feel like a story of depth and substance. Can’t wait to dive deeper and uncover the layers of this riveting historical mystery!
