Solon of Pergamon, the chief physician at the munus, finds himself into the middle of a murder investigation after his much-loved, renowned mentor is found dead under suspicious circumstances. But getting to the heart of the murder is not easy, especially with the corruption rampant and sinister conspiracies at work. Torn between love and duty, Solon must choose wisely.
McGrath plausibly fleshes out his characters: the winning, self-sufficient and proud Solon should be able to sustain a long series in case McGrath decides to write more books, featuring him as the reluctant sleuth. The storyline is gripping and often intriguing, and McGrath does a brilliant job keeping both tension and suspense high as the plot careens into a series of twists.

AP McGrath is not your everyday author. His greatest strength is the ability to blend historical facts and fiction in a way that makes it interesting to read. It might be well to point out the fact that the author studied photography. Therefore, it will not be surprising to understand the authors writing style and why he chooses to open his book with photographic prose.
Again, if you are looking for a mystery theme, this book offers you the opportunity to experience it to the full. The author did a lot of justice with his synopsis and ensure that you are aware of what you will get in the book. At the center of this book are two characters you do not want to miss. They are Solon and Galen.

I first heard about The Mystery of Healing from my Book Club Group, and I have to say, this book instantly grabbed my attention. A.P. McGrath does a fantastic job blending history, mystery, and human emotion into one compelling narrative. Solon of Pergamon, a healer to the gladiators, becomes more than just a doctor he is drawn into the role of detective when a close friend is murdered. The way McGrath paints the tension between Solon’s compassion, his growing love, and the secrets tied to imperial power is truly captivating. The historical setting feels vivid and alive, making me feel as if I was walking the streets of ancient Pergamon. I honestly can’t wait to finish reading the whole book it has all the makings of a classic page-turner!

A captivating mystery set in gladiator times. Solon of Pergamon a physician tries to solve the murder of his friend and former teacher, Diodotus of Miletus. Cadmus also a student of Diodotus is falsely accused of committing the murder. A. P. McGrath in 'The Mystery of Healing' portrays life in gladiator times while weaving a complex mystery. Not wanting to spoil the secrets of this mystery I am incline to say no more. Read this book you will be pleasantly surprised. This book was given to me by NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.

Such a good tale
I couldn't stop reading, I couldn't stop thinking of the mind that wrote it. This is a wondrous book for the story, for the writers thoughts on love and life in a time I am not too familiar with. But this book made me look for more from the writer, maybe a continuation of this story but I couldn't find any. He has another book in modern times that I will read, hopefully I will like it as well.

This is a richly imagined and realistic walk through an Eastern province of the Roman Empire, centering on a truly unique main protagonist who is a physician to gladiators and other people victimized in the arena. I was fascinated by his medical knowledge, empathy and courage as he finds his way in through life. The characters have incredible depth, the scenes are well-described, and there is plenty of both action and soul searching. Definitely worth the read- I could not put it down!

A satisfying story for a relaxing read.
Great story. Appealing characters. I really enjoyed this book. It is not great literature which while deeply satisfying usually can be a heavy emotional experience. This book was well written, the narrator is likeable the story unusual against the background of the Greek city of Pergamum under imperial Rome.

I joined this read through our book club reader group after being intrigued by the book’s mysterious and powerful cover mockup. The story inside matched the promise. Solon is a rare kind of protagonist introspective, principled, and emotionally complex. McGrath does an excellent job capturing the fragility of power and the cost of truth. Though the pacing is measured, the tension builds meaningfully. A thoughtful and atmospheric novel with a satisfying conclusion.

Solon, early 20's, is the very skilled chief physician at the gladiatorial area, who finds himself into the middle of a murder investigation after his much-loved, renowned mentor is found dead under suspicious circumstances. However, getting to the heart of the murder is not easy, especially with the corruption rampant and sinister conspiracies in the city, possible threats to the power of the two people running the city all swirling around him. All made more complicated as Solon deals with personal issues, discovering new information regarding his family and his desire to help anyone who needs help.
For a man somewhat characterized as a bit timid, Solon engages in a number of challenging situations in which he is more heroic.
