Writing a book is hard. Marketing it can be even harder.

Marketing a book in 2021 can seem like a full-time job, what with the crazy number of things authors seem to be expected to do: social media, blog tours, advertising, price promotions, mailing lists, giveaways, you name it.

But here’s a little secret: you don’t need to do all those things to successfully set your book

I should have read this book sooner! That’s one of the first things I had in mind as I read Ricardo Fayet’s “How to Market a Book: Overperform in a Crowded Market”. This is a reference material that could save authors both time and money in trying to search for the best ways to market one’s book. For independent authors, this is a must-have guide that’s brimming with information and practical advice coming from years of expertise and experience.

Just when I thought I’ve tried it all, here comes a

Not a whole lot of new information if you’ve read other book marketing books and have been around indie author circles.

But if you’re new to the indie game, this is the one I’d recommend because as of early 2021 it is the most relevant, up to date, and consolidated between everything from being exclusive Amazon vs going wide, or what to do with ads and book promos and all that sort of thing, or the importance of a newsletter, or if you should do preorders or not.

I learned a great deal in this book. I'm not 'overperforming', but I plan to do so!
I didn't understand everything, but I'm getting there. I plan to pick it back up in 3 months and see all the new things I have learned!
Really useful book, especially for someone just on the verge of publishing my first novel. Ricardo Fayet's position is to provide guidance for people who are trying to maximize revenues as a writer. Mine is not, I am more interested in maximizing readership, or at least developing readership. The two goals are not incompatible, however, and Fayet provides tons of suggestions that can be adapted to different circumstances. And he starts his book in the right way, by focussing on the broader ideas ...more

Wow! As an indie author drowning in an ocean of books, courses and websites offering advice on marketing, this gem is a virtual life raft. Right from the start, it provides no-nonsense advice on making sure your book is in the best possible shape (cover design, anyone?), before diving into everything from blurb-writing tips, going 'wide' versus exclusive, building a mailing list and — my particular bête noire — advertising. Yes, I've devoted days and more dollars than I care to count trying to m ...more

Some of this was remedial for someone who's been around as long as me, but I picked up a few tricks in the advertising section I hadn't been aware of. This would make a great overall guide for new/newish authors. ...more

A comprehensive and valuable guide for any author looking to make a career out of their writing…

Finding good marketing advice about the ins and outs of indie publishing can be quite a daunting task but Ricardo Fayet has achieved this near enough flawlessly with this easy to read guide that’ll I’ll be returning to for reference for some time.

The subject matter ranges widely over 51 chapters from the basic mindset of readers finding you to your writing niche all the way to the intricate details of

Being an author isn't easy. Sometimes it feel like there's a million different things that you have to do in order to be successful. You've probably gotten plenty of vague sales advice from fellow authors and seen writer ads claiming to give you their 'secrets to success', only to be disappointed in your results.

I'm something of a skeptic when it comes to these things, but I knew that I wanted to make a change, so I gave this book a shot. Man am I glad I did!

Incredible! Complete with screenshots and insider tips for marketing platforms like Amazon, BookBub, Facebook and more, this book provides a clear-cut series of strategies for marketing independently-published books. As a new author entering the complex world of indie publishing, I have scoured the web for nuggets of insight and guidance. This book, by the co-founder of Reedsy (a powerful collection of free resources for authors and marketplace of book-related services), is a straight-talking, w ...more

I was depressed to learn that 98% of authors sell less than 5,000 books each year. I’m in this category and desperately want to get into the 2%.

As am writer and marketer, I know I need enhance the discoverability of my books online and the conversion process. I also need to become Jedi master of the Holy Trilogy of Amazon, Bookbub and Facebook advertising.

Ricardo Fayet is an incredibly generous guy as is evidenced by this great book being made available for free - yes I know that it’s a lead mag

A great book on everything book marketing! If you're just starting out, this is going to be one of THE best resources you could load into your arsenal. With tips ranging from mindset to mailings lists, and where to publish to how to set up a promo, you can't beat the clearly-presented advice.

If you've been at this for a while, some of this won't be new (especially if you've been following the Reedsy blog). However, you will still find some gems such as how to not get lost in the crowd on stores

Fayet offers everything a self-publishing writer needs to know but would rather not. He unravels the mysteries of and why some books get featured and others disappear, tells how to find your niche, build your team, create a mailing and a newsletter, offer “reader magnets,” write blurbs and get reviews. He writes extensively on how, why, and where to advertise your book. Along the way, he gives tips, statistics, and screenshots to show us what he’s talking about. The reader ends up wit ...more

The Perfect Guide
I have to be honest, when I downloaded this book, I wasn't expecting too much. After all, it was free!
I was expecting a few pages of vaguely useful information, packed around a load of advertising.
How wrong I was!
This is an excellent book, jam-packed with brilliant and relevant advice. It is clearly laid out and easy to work through, and my highlighter tool went into overdrive as I marked up useful tips, great links, and lots of things I wanted to refer back to and try out.

As an author assistant, I picked my way through this book reading only the portions that applied to my clients. I'm currently working with traditionally published Christian authors and I like to keep them apprised of trends and new/effective marketing strategies. While the book is geared towards indie writers who have more control over intricate details of their book's marketing, I found plenty of great ideas we could implement immediately.

At the time of this writing, the book is FREE on kindle.

Incredibly Informative

I love Fayet's writing style and how he keeps every chapter fresh. I have been publishing since 2017. I have learned so many game changers, new information and new methods. I didn't expect so much valuable insight and information from this book. A lot of it seems introductory after publishing for so long but the insights on the basis of why books don't sell was like a splash of fresh freezing cold water. I needed it. And love how many resources and well cited this informati

No-nonsense approach to sell that book

Ricardo Fayet is my new favorite authority in this field. His extensive background and knowledge are key. I will be following his advice from now on and tune out other experts, except as he recommends. What he says makes sense. And he's not trying to sell a one-size-fits-all approach. Or sell me anything. It's all about helping authors sell our books.

Good Overview

This is a clearly written, medium depth, unbiased survey of independent publishing. It covers most topics adequately although perhaps none of them as thoroughly as you might wish. For example, the chapters on promotional sites are pretty light, despite the fact that this route to sales is the only easy, guaranteed way to gain visibility (albeit temporarily). It’s much better on understanding Amazon’s algorithms and practices. That said, if you’re not yet an expert book marketer, thi

Informative collection of edited articles, some of which I had read before as I am subscribed to the newsletter. I picked up some useful tips and appreciate the effort putting this book together. There was one issue that spoilt my reading experience - on a Kindle Paperwhite it was impossible to make out any of the images. This flaw should be addressed in any second edition.

Consolidated, concise and up-to-date. This contains tons of information for any independent authors. Fayet is a founder of resource website Reedsy, but don't worry the book is more than just one long promo. Fayet lays out straightforward, doable actions writers can take to boost the profile of their work. It may not contain anything new for veterans, but for everyone else its a must read. ...more

This was informative and gave you a good grounding in strategies. I liked at the beginning that it states you shouldn’t do everything! Hooray! I thought. However, there is still an awful lot you ought to do. It will take time to work through it, I think a second read will be in order. But I have a plan to start anyway! So worth a read, definitely. Since it was free I had nothing to lose...

There are so many things even experienced indie authors can learn from Ricardo’s advice.

I found the writing a bit impersonal and distant, but all suggestions and advices were sound. I will implement some of them myself.

This is a book suggested to indie writers at every level of their authorpreneur career. It is that insightful.

Thinking about writing a review of a book that praises the benefits of good reviews is a bit too meta for me. Compared to similar books, this one is easy to read, up to date, and relatable. This is a great book. The beginning of the book repeats many of the elements that are common knowledge on the internet. My favorite part of the book is the author's in depth analysis of Amazon, Facebook, and Bookbub advertisements. This is a must read for all indie authors.

This should be titled The Handbook for Writers

Valuable resource for all types of marketing, but highlights the intricacies of the big three: Amazon, Bookbub, and Facebook. When all is said and done, the key to success is testing each market until you learn it well.
