A deadly race to stay ahead of the Nazi war machine will test them all.
Tensions are high across Europe in the beginning of May, 1940. Hitler’s forces have overrun Norway, and it’s only a matter of time before his focus turns to France. When Evelyn Ainsworth is sent to Brussels, she understands all too well the risk of remaining too long. The MI6 agent’s goal is to get in, pick up a package, meet with her Soviet contact, and get out again as quickly as possible.
But even the best laid plans can go awry.
Obersturmbannführer Hans Voss knows the stolen blueprints from Stuttgart are in Brussels and is determined to hunt down the courier. But when the German armies invade Belgium, the city is thrown into chaos, complicating his chances of locating the missing package.
Armed with the packet that has already cost men their lives, Evelyn finds herself in another race to safely reach France while Hitler’s army unleashes a storm against the Low Countries. But her flight is complicated by an enigmatic young Belgian who offers assistance—and carries a secret of his own.
Pursued by two of the Third Reich’s most lethal agents, Evelyn must trust her instincts to survive.
If you have been reading this series, you know Evelyn Ainworths has come down from the heights of high society to the trenches of espionage to help stop the Nazi war machine. With a minimum amount of training by Mi6, she has still manage to gather a great deal of intelligence from the Nazi's and as a consequence, has the meanest and deadliness of the Nazi's after her. I love all of CW Brownings books and in this one, she continues to show us how human, capable and determined Evelyn is to protect Britain. Her mission in this book is simple: meet a courier, get the plans to secret Nazi muntions plants and bring them back to Mi6. Get this book and find out how it turns out. You will never be disappointed reading anything by CW Browning.
If you like flashing white teeth.. Men with thick brown hair falling over their forehead’s in careless waves .. together with eyes of sparkling green and Cornflower Blue… and false bottom suitcases galore you’ll love this!
Thankfully this Lady also writes fascinatingly detailed, well researched spy thrillers! I’ve learned to skip all the above nonsense and to appreciate the actual story of how the fuddy duddy upper class English Politicians almost allowed Hitler to win by ignoring all the warning signs until it was almost too late.. I refer to this book in particular about just how close he came! There almost wasn’t an England!
Thank god for Churchill.. love him or hate him .. he saved Englands Bacon!
The Germans are advancing with lightening speed. Belgium has fallen with very little resistance. France is crumbling. Paris will fall shortly. Evelyn is a fast learner. She has a natural skill set taught to her by her father. She also has self defense skills that few people are aware of. Lastly, good luck also plays a part in her survival. She and a Belgian friend are carrying vital information that M16 needs. Non stop action, suspense. Another excellent read in this series!!
Our young heroine continues to work secretly to help her country gain whatever advantage they can as Hitler storms the continent. Her efforts continue to be thwarted by politicians who refuse to recognize the threat and forces within her own government who have aligned themselves with the Third Reich. Just back from a harrowing escape from Norway, Jian goes to Belgium just as the Iron Storm hits. A must read!
I have all four books in the series and although I know most of the history the inclusion of ‘a spy in our midst’ certainly added to the drama I am aware also of the countless stories of resistance workers and spies on both sides and whenever I come across another, based on fact, I continue to be amazed. Amazed at the bravery of these people and ask myself, could I have done it? I hope I never have to find out.
Evie is going to Belgium for a simple courier mission and to meet the Russian agent who worked with her father. The mission seems to be going well until the German's invade. She then makes her way to France with the SS trying to find her to get the documents she picked up back. This is a very good historical fiction book. The only thing bad about it having to wait for another one to be written.
As usual CW Browning has delivered another gripping read in this fourth book in the Shadows of War series. You will be enthralled when you join Evelyn Ainsworth as she once again flees through Europe, and races to safety, in the midst of World War 2. CW Browning's attention to historical detail is incredible. Another must read.
Another good read in this series. I am enjoying the historical side in these novels and Evelyn certainly gets herself into some trouble at times. Other readers have mentioned about the Americanism of language, this did not bother me as volunteers from Canada/USA were in London at the time. So too me it was just banter. So well done C W Browning and will look forward to the next book.
Loved this book, part of the Shadows of War series. Taking place mostly in Belgium and France as the Nazis invade in the spring of 1940, it is the story of an English spy trying to get critical information back to Britain.
The Iron Storm was another riveting book to read. As you read the story you can feel the fear of the Germans attacking and the thrill of Evelyn trying to get back to London with the information she is carrying. All four book have been exciting to read.
Though the story line is somewhat predictable, Browning's skills as a writer make it an enjoyable tale. I recommend reading the first three books in the series before emerging in this one. The characters are strong and the history is true to reality.
The growth of Evelyn as a Spy continues as Hitler continues the Blitzkrieg to take over Europe. The story led me to do further research into the lead up to WWII in Europe.
Can't wait to read the next one and get her and Jens out of Paris for the time being. Yhis book is great....the twist and turns are wonderful....and she always get help right on time. Evie is amazing!
Great and fun read, but CW, stop making Evelyn such a wimp, she cringes at the site of blood or a dead person, she is supposed to be a tough MI6 agent.
This is a well written and very exciting novel about the adventures of a British spy in the early days of WW2. I cannot wait for the next book in the series.
I enjoyed this book immensely. Having lived through World War 2, it brought back many memories. Highly recommend this book to people who remember the times described in the book.
