Skinless takes place in New York City at the turn of the millennium. The plot combines elements of gritty TV drama (The Sopranos, Dexter, Ray Donovan) against a backdrop of small-time drug dealing and violence. Skinless tells the story of Charmay, a female survivor of sex abuse and teenage homelessness, who is caught in the grip of alcohol addiction. The reader follows her ...more

This book is a hidden gem, apparently a debut work from author Maggie Moor. A story of a young woman Charmay who is raised in a dysfunctional family and sexual abuse from her drunken stepfather which left her jaded with very cynical view of men. This is a narrative in the first person of how she survived raising herself up from the streets of San Franciso and New York City, maneuvering a relationship triangle between her husband who is the local weed kingpin (this took place between the late 90s ...more

A breathtaking page-turner novel!

I’m glad I’ve read this fiction novel, first from Maggie Moor. Skinless is the story of a dancer, Charmay, a woman that had suffered since she was a child, and who has lived in a world surrounded by sex, drugs, deception, and many other challenges in her life. Practically forgotten by his family describes the difficult life of the protagonist along with friend Sam. A story of survival.

Written in the first person and with a special style, that grabs you inside the

Skinless is a revelation. Meet Charmay.

A wind tapped lightly at heavily drawn aluminum shades, wishing to breathe newness amidst the howling chaos. Me and Sam had one thing to cling to on this banal rock, and that was each other. Well, each other and whatever else we could get our hands on. Bare springs, mattress. Me. Cool air, tawny skin. Long dancer’s limbs, lanky legs. Naked on my back. Gold chestnut waves; my hollow eyes blindly, wide open staring into hue, blue.

Skinless is also a revoluti

I have read 25 novels per year for the past 40 years, more or less. I never wrote a review until now. One type of novel I seek out are author’s first novels. So, I dove into Maggie Moor’s first novel with an open mind and limited expectations - but by the end of the prologue, I had to pause.

“Whoa, this does not feel like a first novel, who the heck is Maggie Moor?” --- Google “Maggie Moor” and you uncover an actress, a Jazz Singer, an elite Fitness model competitor and a licensed psychoanalyst w

I read this book, enjoyed it, and I imagined the entire time I read it of sitting down and having a conversation with the main character. I have never met the main character or the author, but wish I could.

Charmay and I were sitting over coffee, talking about the last day in her lifetime of incredulous challenge and stellar survival, and the occasional soaring triumph.

Charmay, as the storyteller in Skinless, the first book by Maggie Moor. This character has been in my life for a long time.

Skinless; A Modern Day Superwoman
I recently read Skinless by Maggie Moor. I thoroughly enjoyed the book. It is a brilliant and superbly intelligent piece of work. The author’s use of language and story telling flow easily and quite profoundly into deep terrain. The story is both poignant and inspiring. Through the lead character, Charmay, the story makes one feel as though they are glimpsing into the life of a modern day superwoman. Each scene was, to me, replete with layers of reality, fantasy

From Austin Macauley Publisher, July 2019. Letter of interest in publishing SKINLESS:
“Skinless is a unique look at a woman’s search for meaning and herself. Each chapter is dripping with beautiful prose and has incredible scenes that will enrapture the reader. It is an important story to be told in today’s age and one that balances emotion with the facts of patriarchal misogyny handily. I’m sure whoever picks up this book will have a hard time putting it down.“ Austin Macauley, acceptance letter
