To Be Like Jesus: 40 Meditations for Your Journey Toward Christlikeness

Rate this book
Forty Meditations for Your Journey Toward Christlikeness. The Christian life is a journey of spiritual and moral transformation into the glorious image and likeness of God’s Son, the Lord Jesus Christ. This journey is lifelong. We begin this journey when we first believe in Jesus, but will not reach our final destination until the final resurrection, when our bodies will be raised, transformed, and glorified, as we are fully and finally conformed to the image of Christ.

As with any lengthy journey, sometimes Christians lose their way. We can become disoriented and confused. We mistake the terrain we have already traversed, lose sight of the road on which we tread, and forget the destination to which we travel. Sometimes we take detours. Or we get stuck on the side of the road. All of us sometimes need help.

In To Be Like Jesus, Brian G. Hedges provides a series of encouraging road signs—brief meditations, with questions for personal reflection and application, to help you in your journey toward Christlikeness.

I was skeptical at first to read that these 40 meditations were drawn from a larger body of the author’s work. I approached them much as you might view a CliffsNotes version of your favorite novel, or even a “Cinderella Part II.” Would this be some sort of a “dumbed down” sequel?

But to his credit, author Brian G. Hedges totally blew away my expectations. Each meditation is rich and thoughtful. Not having read Hedges' larger works, I can’t say for certain, but I suspect that in reading this abbreviation, we are really benefiting from sitting at the feet of someone who has done the hard work of selecting some of his very best material and condensing it into a rich, insight-packed volume.

This lovely collection of 40 meditations has been an encouraging group-read-aloud for our family over these past few months. I suppose that’s probably not the intended use for a book of “meditations” lol, but we’ve been taking it in together at breakfasts. We’ve turned the reflection questions at the end of each chapter into discussion questions and with a quick switch of pronouns in the closing prayers (“we” for “I”), it has encouraged conversation and application as we head into our day.

Brian Hedges wrote this 40 day devotional based on his book, “Christ Formed in You: The Power of the Gospel for Personal Change.” Both books are helpful in gaining and applying a biblical understanding of sanctification. Each day ends with questions to reflect with and a simple prayer.
