Beautiful little book. Short pieces which the introduction by Nelson Foster describes as “late thoughts” of one of the west’s first native Zen teachers. They are apparently written in the zuihitsu style of “following the brush”; also described as “spontaneous natterings” or jottings. They reminded me of the latter Borges in their brevity, although generally much briefer, and more pointed: more useful. Robert Aitken is a retired master of the Diamond Sangha, a Zen Buddhist society he founded in Honolulu in 1959 with his late wife Anne Hopkins Aitken.
