When the friends he's been sleeping with get engaged and cut him out of their lives, newly-minted small town police officer Jack Miller confesses his heartbreak to the absolute last person he should tell: his superior officer, Bryan Keene, a former Marine, volunteer firefighter, and, Jack suspects, a closet case. Keene is a really good listener. Jack finds himself confessing to even more, including the trauma that haunts him, and the distressing desires that he keeps at a distance.
SECRETS THAT MUST BE KEPT
Keene has never met anyone as honest as Jack-or as perceptive. Youthful, beautiful Jack sees past everything Keene says and does. For the first time in almost a decade, Keene wishes he could be honest about who he is. But Keene has segmented his life so completely since his return from Afghanistan that he no longer knows how to be a whole person. Falling for Jack-his subordinate, the rookie-puts everything he's built in jeopardy.
LOVE THAT RISKS IT ALL
Although they promise themselves they'll stop seeing each other, they soon relapse into dating in secret. Jack wants to tell their police chief and take their relationship public. He sees a chance for something real-a meaningful counterpoint, at last, to the painful directionlessness of his life. Keene wants to help Jack, who is dogged by his past, and more importantly, he wants to be with Jack. No matter how sure he is that Jack will leave Grenton, and Keene.

Whisper follows Breathe in the Grenton PD series and, for the most part, this book can stand alone. Simon, from Breathe, is present here and there are spoilers here for his story, but Jack and Keene’s story stands on its own.
Jack was in an educational Masters program and had no plans to become a policeman. He’s new to the force and looking to make a real difference. He has past trauma that he is only now starting to process and feels a little lost tackling a new job in a new town. Keene has PTSD from the military that is in the background for his character and the book has a steady somber feel to it.
Fun surprise! I listened to this book on Scribd after I accidentally downloaded it thinking it was by LA Witt and then hit play thinking it was Whisper by Tal Bauer.
Great book. Love story with heart break, mystery, and lots of sexy time.
Keane a super closeted ex marine turned cop and volunteer firefighter (hearts). Keane also takes care of his mom, as if the first stuff wasn’t enough.
Jack is the new guy in town rookie cop. Jack is fresh from a poly break up (tears).
Needless to say they are meant to be even if they don’t know it. Plus there is Arden, teen runaways and the best dog ever.
I read this story on wattpad and absolutely loved it, made it to the list of my all-time favorites. 🤩 I’m so glad it was published, it definitely deserves to be! And I’m tempted to buy it again.. I’ve wanted to reread it for so long and now I’ve finally found it! It’s a beautiful romance, with actual depth to the characters and meaningful moments in their lives. The plot is fun and mysterious, but still makes sense—as if it was real! If you’re interested in this story, I think it is totally worth the buy
I liked the audiobook well enough. This is book 2 of a series but you don't need to have read book 1 (I didn't). There are some interesting character backstories and I liked both MCs but I won't be continuing the series.
I'm not sure if the arson is the main plot line as it kind of gets forgotten in places - replaced by long sex scenes (which I found myself skipping through! I never want to hear the term "p-spot" again.)
The best scene in the book is when Jack rescues the dog before the old lady! Yay Jack!!
This is such a well written book. I downloaded a few weeks ago and have already reread it several times, which is unusual for most of the books I’ve read in the last few years. I would highly recommend it.
I enjoyed this story about a man who was a threesome until the other male and female got engaged. He then gets involved with his superior officer which shouldn't lead them to a romance.
