I shouldn't have waited so long to read this one. I thought it was only about the Charlie Chop-Off case, but it proved to be both a biography of one of the detectives in Manhattan's Special Homicide Investigative Team and a pretty close description of quite of a few of the cases they solved, or tried to solve, over the course of 2 years. I learned a lot about big-city policing in the early 1970s as well, and what I learned about the exams policemen have to take to get promoted absolutely gave me the chills. Don't miss this one.

This book is kind of like "Dragnet" in book form. It's extremely straight forward and pretty dry. It gave a seemingly accurate account of what it was like to be a New York City policeman and detective in the early '70s.

This book is really horrible.
If my father was not one of the detectives Ms. Gelb writes about, I would have never read past the first chapter, if that far.
