Could Have Been Helpful

The PDF version that I received as an ARC copy has 87 pages, though the book proper doesn't start until page 6. So I was surprised when I saw that this book had nineteen distinct chapters. That meant that the average space given to each topic within the book would only be 4 pages. So while this book would cover weighty topics like passion and purpose, not much space would be given to each concept. The book actually reads more like a collection of blog posts on the topics, not really joined together with any sort of a common thread. In fact, I found it really annoying that in most of the beginning chapters, the author kept stating his definition of passion. A coherent book would have only said that once and perhaps explored what defining it meant and why the author chose this definition. Instead, we get six or seven slightly different definitions of passion. I was at the point of rolling my eyes when I saw another chapter start with a slightly different definition. Despite this defining and redefining of passion, I didn't see anywhere where the author actually helps you through the steps of figuring out your passion. At a chapter 5 or 6 chapters into the book, he states something along the lines of, “Now that you know your passion…” after never having had led you through an exercise to help you find your passion. He just assumes, I guess, you know or miraculously came upon it yourself just by reading chapters about passion. While he states that passion is different than purpose—passion being the fuel that drives purpose—he stuck in a chapter about purpose right in the middle of all the passion chapters. So, all in all, I found this to be a light, repetitive survey of the topics mentioned in the title and subtitle—nothing deep that will help you “find your passion”--and a disappointing one.

I received a free copy of this book, but that did not affect my review.
