A Sucky Vampire Romantic Comedy

I don’t usually fang and tell, but she earned an exception.
The hapless woman who accidentally released me.
The one who nearly got herself killed mere hours later.
So I saved her, but my help came with a price.

The only way to save her life was to bond her–to link us so powerfully we’d have to spend every waking hour together for the next few weeks.

I was ready for the bond, but I wasn’t ready for her.

Her impossible to crush perky outlook. Her big eyes that never seem to dim, no matter how far into my blackened soul they saw.

I thought I’d lost the ability to care centuries ago, but it appears I was wrong.

The insufferable woman won’t rest until she’s forced me to do the unthinkable. To… enjoy her company.

It’s ridiculous, but all I need to do is outlast the bond.

To outlast my growing fear that I’m not as numb as I thought.

I’m in danger of feeling something for this human that I can’t afford to feel. Because the only thing more dangerous for her than my enemies is if I can’t let her go.

Author’s Note: Get sucked into this high stakes, fang-fest of paranormal, romantic comedy fun with an out-of-his-element vampire grump and the upbeat woman who refuses to let things go according to plan.

USA Today, Wall Street Journal, and Amazon Charts Bestselling author Penelope Bloom is taking her first flight into romantasy—and yes, there are dragons. After years of contemporary romance, she's temporarily trading meet-cutes for magical academies and coffee shops for castles that reek of blood. She promises the banter is just as sharp, but now it comes with deadly consequences.

Fun fact: “Penelope Bloom” started as a tongue-in-cheek tribute to the family dog, Penelope—never meant to be anything serious. But then the books took off, and the name stuck. Behind the scenes, Penelope Bloom is actually a husband-and-wife team. He handles the writing; she edits, helps with brainstorming, and runs the reader-facing side of things (like social media and messages). So if you’ve chatted with “Penelope” online, you’ve likely been talking to her—with the author chiming in whenever needed. Together, they’ve built the voice readers know and love.

Quirky fanging vampire tale!

I love sassy, sarcastic characters and Cara fit the bill. Whether it was her quirky fashion sense or some of the crazy things she said, she was definitely unique. Even Lucian had such a dry wit and delivered such deadpanned quips I was kept chuckling throughout this story.

Cara's full bladder and klutziness lead to her inadvertent rescuing of Lucian and his siblings. They had such a strong pull to one another from the get go that a bond started to form, linking them together. Lucian was sexy and sarcastic but also a good guy trying to do the right thing. She was tenacious and had a heart to help people by trying to cure rare blood disorders. They used their brains and special gifts to take on the "bad guys".

Lucian and Cara both were willing to do what was right even if it was the harder and more dangerous thing to do. They were funny and sweet together. They never gave in or gave up and in the end they got their hard fought HEA.

I hope this is a start to a series. We have some over arching story lines left unanswered and I would love to see some of these other characters with their own story.

Even though it's an ARC, I will always shoot you straight. I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.

There was something in the way he looked at me. Like he’d known me for years [. . .] It was a lost, hopeless look. A I will walk through fire for you look. A I will pick up my clothes and never leave a mess in the kitchen if you’d just be mine look.

Are you guys sitting down? Well if not you better get seated as soon as possible because I'm about to drop a truly hot take.

🤯✨🦇Vampires are fucking SEXY 🤯✨🦇

Now, I know what you guys are thinking. You're most likely thinking, "Julia have you been living under a ROCK, Vampires have been sexy since 1897!"

tell me all that hair gel isn't making you hot. i'll wait.

Which fair assessment, BUT I have a theory that I want to share. See I don't know if you guys can tell but I have a bit of a thing for romance novels. Unfortunately I have the attention span of my dog Winnie, which is to say it's laughably short. If a book doesn't grab me within the first couple of chapters I'll DNF that bitch and move on to the next read. HOWEVER, if the book has vampires? werewolves? fae? demons? anything vaguely supernatural? I will power through that bad boy until my eyes start to go fuzzy, no lie. Thus, I am proposing the theory that the way to make a book better or even a smidge more readable to have vampires. The answer to any book that you've ever marked a DNF? ✨🦇 VAMPIRES ✨🦇

Now to circle back to Kiss Kiss Fang Fang , as a romance novel it's nice. But personally I probably would've skipped it if I hadn't seen the words vampire romantic comedy. As we've established I'm a hoe for anything remotely supernatural. And, as a vampire story KISS KISS FANG FANG is extremely fun! It gave me MAJOR What We Do In The Shadows and that's never a bad thing. I thought the romance (when it was the focus) was actually pretty endearing, and I quite enjoyed Penelope Bloom's take on the vampire lore.

“I’m sorry, but have you considered that maybe you’re just crazy? Obviously, you’re really attractive. Maybe you’ve built up this fantasy world where women can’t resist you because you’re… what, a vampire? Maybe you’re just really hot and really tragically confused.”

BUT, what kept me from rating this one higher was the fact that our resident vampire love interest, Lucian, was so. damn. BROODY. Seriously all this guy did was brood and lament being a vampire. Oh and he kept repeating over, and over, and OVER, that he couldn't tell Cara anything because, reasons.

“A dangerous topic you don’t need to know about.”

After the millionth time he declared that he didn't want Cara to be a vampire / he couldn't tell her IMPORTANT information, I was ready to throw Lucian Undergrove across the fucking room.

Oh and there was too much plot. I needed less boring plot and more sexy vampire romance. However, despite my complaints with Broody McBrooderson and the fact that a plot exists, I did still have a lot of fun. The humor in KISS KISS FANG FANG got some mild chuckles out of me, and I was actually really surprised by how well developed the romance was. In my opinion, the book shined the most when the romance had the spotlight. So, if you're a fan of PENELOPE BLOOM or just have a soft spot for vampires I say give this book a shot!

“Do your teeth get bigger when you are thinking about drinking blood?” “Yes.” “Like an erection of the mouth. That must get awkward.”

I HATE rom-coms but somehow I actually enjoyed this? 3 Fun packed stars. I read a lot of vampire fiction… romance, hard line fantasy and I have even begun to foray into the work of Anne Rice so I wasn’t expecting a fun twist on the myth. There were no real twists (I mean vamps can give birth and sire children) but no true plot changes.

I normally detest young, virginal normally college student types. They feel so trashy and their holding on to their V card becomes literally their entire personality but somehow despite being a virgin Cara was not that annoying. She even was stereotypically klutzy but that works to further the story as that is how she releases Lucian and his siblings. Cara was so sassy and sarcastic but not to the point of being stupid. You know the ones I am talking about has to prove they are badass or they are whiny weakass b*tches like Bella Swan.

I have no clue how this book is 318 pages because it reads really quick. The artwork on the cover totally made me check it out and don’t feel like I wasted my time. I went over how Cara was actually likeable but for once my problems lie with the dude. Lucian takes whining about being a vampire to a new level. He also keeps things for Cara (I get that but…) and never really gives a reason not even the generic I want to protect her. He excluded her because she’s not a vampire but simultaneously forces her into situations where knowledge is necessary.

DNF 80%

The beginning was good and interesting. But the further the story went, the lamer it seemed to be.

It was repetitive, Heroine wants Hero, Hero doesn't (can't) have her. The story seemed to focus only on that. This lasted until the 80% mark.

Heroine was a tad too obsessive with her "blood work". And she was stupidly naive about her goals.

I know this is a comedy, but the things that were done in this book weren't really funny. If someone behaves really dumb about the most simple things through the entire book it feels more stupid than funny.

And the cover has nothing to do with our couple. Heroine has short hair and dresses more unique. And it should show the Heroine chasing after the Hero, because that was what happened.

This was a very fun vampire rom-com! Kinda corny with some phrases but otherwise the story was fun to follow. The chapters are really short so you'll fly through tbh. There is either always action, dangerous things happening or Lucian and Cara are horny 24/7. You'll have a good time reading this book, I'm sure.

When Cara accidentally releases 3 old vampires from, she never saw how much her life would change. But it did when she met their leader, Lucian. They also kinda bonded so now they are trying not to succumb to their sexual tension, because if they have sex, she will turn into a vampire. But now, evil vampires are trying to kill her in order to get revenge on Lucian so! There are a lot of dangerous situations where guns are involved, blood is spilled and stoic vampires are introduced.

"I'd drank the blood of a vampire, and now I was pretending he was my boyfriend. Oh, and some sort of magnetic magic black dots were now flooding my blood and drawing me toward him like he was a drug.

Yup, there is fake dating! But only to show the human, and her roommates, that Lucian is now in her life. He's in fact protecting her and keeping her safe, but they have to pretend in order to not say that lmao.
"I had to admite some of his adherence to vampire clichés was a little bit adorable. I'd even caught him trying to talk to a bat he "mistook for a friend of his."

So, if you are in the mood for a paranormal rom-com, try this one! If you like the sound of everything I've been saying, you'll probably like it. We don't see a lot paranormal romcoms, especially vampire-related romcoms, out there. So I was happy I found out about this one!

I was baited by the cover, which so far had absolutely nothing to do with the book.
I thought it was supposed to be a paranormal romcom but it read just like your average paranormal romance with bad vampire puns thrown in here and there.

Hilarious and Sweet

I've been saving this one for a bit but don't be like me - run don't walk! There are sassy scientists who love blood, shenanigans in a supposedly haunted house which lead to secret discoveries and more comedy than I've ever read before! If you love clumsy antics and tomfoolery all wrapped in a bow of love this one's for yo!

This book was such a fun read and it has me laughing one second and very intrigued with the storyline. Cara was a hard worker who felt that maybe she spent too much time working and not having a social life, but she is determined to finish school and help others. She has roommates that are hilarious, very protective, and care about her dearly even if they were a tad messy at times. She has an incident at her job one evening and this changes her life entirely. She accidently awakens some vampires that try to make her forget they existed but somehow she becomes bonded with one of them, Lucian. The bond between them is so strong that they have to spend every second together until it fades because Lucian refuses the other option and that's turning Cara into what he is. I was submersed into the storyline of vampires hunting others down and trying to protect human life and at times it was just silly fun, especially Vlad and his dry humor. The attraction between Cara and Lucian is very intense and they try hard to fight their feelings but fate has other plans for them. I really enjoyed this book because as I said it was fun, it was steamy, and had me sucked into the action. I hope we get more from this world!!

It has been a while since I dove into one of Penelope's book and honestly - I wish I hadn't waited so freaking long. There's just something about her writing that completely sucks me in. It honestly doesn't even matter what she writes about. She could have a story dedicated to loving grilled cheese and I would probably devour it. Mostly because.. who doesn't like grilled cheese? Monsters, that's who.

In Kiss Kiss Fang Fang, you will meet Cara. Now she was someone who was easily relatable and likable. She was definitely a klutz but she was also kind of awkward. In the beginning, she was hilarious when it came to her roommates. She kept me laughing throughout the book as well, but she wasn't the only one to spark humor here and there. Enter Lucian. My sexy and sarcastic beautiful specimen of a man.

These two together just made me happy. I loved the adventure that they went on because they never took the easy route which was honestly refreshing as hell. They fought left and right to get things done the right way while also getting closer to one another.

In the end, I devoured this book and I can't wait to dive into my next book by Penelope!

Laugh out loud funny, in a good way 😁

This seriously had me chuckling in many places. This isn’t a book for everybody, being a bit of a walk on the wild and naughty side with just the humor alone, but I enjoyed it. If it were a series, I’d immediately read the next one. *Hint hint* to the author...

This book was amazing. I love a good vamp read and this was a book I couldn’t put down. Lucian is a character you will not want to forget. Lucian & Cara are absolutely perfect for each other. How they meet was perfect and this book will have you laughing and having a smile on your face. Enjoyable read that everyone should one-click.

Everything about this cover and title just screamed at me to read it. I’m not always the biggest rom com fan, but apparently it’s cause most rom coms I read didn’t have vampires in them, which makes all the difference. This was just fun. It’s light and quirky and cute, not super memorable, but just a good time.

Rom-Com meets Vampires!

The first quarter of the book leans heavily on its Rom-Com features, with the very first chapter starring the classic; "Oh jeez! Look at this bad situation I'm in. I bet you are wondering how i got here-" trope. Personally I wasn't the biggest fan of that. It felt like the book was really trying to hammer home the idea that it was a Rom-Com within the first few pages. Luckily, after the first quarter or so the book seems to hit its stride and the story and characters flow more naturally.

There were plenty of interesting characters in this book; Vlad and Alaric being two of my favorites. Lucian was a very compelling lead with an interesting vampire backstory. His frequent teasing of Clara (and hers of him) made their relationship endearing as well as entertaining. The only complaint I have of Lucian is that he doesn't talk like someone who has been sealed away for a few hundred years. I would have liked to have seen him use some older slang or reference something that is no longer around. Something that strengthens the fact he hasn't been in society for a long while. The closest we get to this though is Clara teaching him about cell phones and Alaric being terrible with guns.

Okay the gun thing was actually pretty funny.

The author manages to take some of the classic vampire tropes and make them her own, creating a vampire world that is both familiar and new. And some of the vampire twists were downright hilarious! There was some action in this book but nothing so severe or dark that it would take the book out of that Rom-Com genre. Even with the vampires.

Overall I found the book enjoyable and would recommend it to anyone looking for a light read and a few laughs!

Vampires... and a woman who studies blood for a living. This is touted as a romantic comedy, but I didn't find this as funny as I think the author wanted. I'm not a huge fan of vampire romance, so this fell flat for me.

This felt like some kind of unexpected cross between New Girl and Underworld. There’s humor and suspense, danger, drama, and steam. They’re quirky characters with complex emotions and motivations that kept me glued to the pages. Lucian and Cara kept me laughing and kept me guessing for the whole book. I have no idea if there’s a sequel to this in the works, but I really REALLY want there to be. This was so much fun, I wish it wasn’t over already.

I’m a fan of Penelope Bloom, and I’ve read my fair share of vampire books. However, this one just didn’t do it for me. I didn’t find it funny; I found it to be overly corny. It was very superficial, and I think I would’ve enjoyed something that delved just a touch deeper.

I must say, I was also very disappointed that there wasn’t a reference to Henrietta Lacks, her immortal cells and her largely unrecognized contribution to the world of medicine.

"Fang me, you dirty, sexy vampire"

Yes, things started so well. Things were so funny. I totally though hmm, I finally picked this up and it was worth it. And it was...until it started dragging on, and until I realised that some missed information was repeating over and over.

If you read it like an easy read, and don't expect much from the plot, its up your alley, otherwise..nooooo.

I wasn’t impressed with this book whatsoever. I enjoyed a few books out of the “His Banana” series so I was hoping this might be a good Segway from a particularly depressing series I recently read to help get me in a good mood but it was so poorly written, it depressed me further instead of lifted my spirits.

I’m not entirely sure why it was necessary to add breaks after WVERY SINGLE paragraph. It made me feel like I was reading a Jr. High essay from a kid trying impress his teacher with how many pages he was able to add.

Apparently she couldn’t figure out if she wanted the character’s name to be Seraphine or Seraphina so she just divided the book between both names equally to keep things interesting 🤷🏼‍♀️.

The whole storyline felt entirely forced to me; the comedy, the love story and the plot twist. All of it was so abrupt it wasn’t even funny, hot or mysterious. There were too many wholes left unchecked and the ending was completely anticlimactic.

Another one bites the dust.

I am a huge Penelope fan and when I saw that she wrote a vampire book I jumped at the chance to read it. I have to admit while I was reading it I was a little skeptical. I will admit that it took me a couple of chapters to get into the story but once it started flowing I was hooked.

Cara and Lucian are a great couple. Cara is a complete klutz and the total opposite of Lucian. Which is what makes them so great. Lucian needs someone so outspoken and fun for him. The outside characters are great and I just LOVED Vlad!

As usual, Bloom threw in laughs, sexiness, and mystery into this book. I hope to see other characters get stories and will jump at the chance to read those also.

I like weird humour. I like books that satirize tropes and such. Witty banter, adding some silly things that embarrass the paranormal creatures, weird awkward scenarios etc. I really enjoy books with that kind of stuff in it. I think that was what the author was going for, a silly play on the classic vampire tropes, with weird humour and such. But sadly for me, it just didnt work. There was not enough really clever humour in it for me to really classify it as a Romantic Comedy, as a majority of the plot is focused on these shoot outs, and this big evil Vampire gang trying to kidnap the main heroine, but the action plot felt a bit too slap dashed together and formulaic, with nothing really original to add to the trope of Good vs Bad, and really no cohesive ending, to really consider this an action book

Its like the author was unsure exactly what type of book she wanted to write. The Comedy was kinda meh, and sporadic. The Action was heavily present but not really interesting. Even the Romance was a bit..quick. Like the main characters have to be together through a supernatural bond that makes them horny for eachother. Okay cool. I actually liked the banter and the romance during that part of the book, as they needed to not sleep together for reasons, but the bond kept trying to push that. But after it faded, it just felt... I dont know, so artificial. Like they went from Supernatural forces are making us want eachother to we are so deep in love we’d die for eachother. No I know romances in romance novels move fast and hard. It just, all this happens over a series of like weeks. It just seemed too much.

The Characters are fun tho, and I did enjoy sitting and reading it. Don’t know if I would try other stuff from this author, maybe? I wouldnt recommend this to someone as a OH! You should totally check this out. But I mean, if you want something kinda silly and mindless to read, it could be fun.

I have been in a book slump for a while now and this was just the thing to lift me out of it.
Lucian and Cara are great! Oh my golly Vlad is the crazy bff we all need to have in our lives.
Cara is a 30 year old college student, researcher and Ghost Tour Guide who through a potty mishap meets a group of vampires, including Lucian. What follows is a few hours of hilarious dialogue and action to make your vampire heart rate increase to 35 beats a minute.

I love vampires and vampire romance, and I love light hearted vampire romance too, but this book was a let down. First, I have enormous respect for anyone who can publish a book and acquire followers who love the work. However, the MC Cara was simply not believable for me and that spoiled it. She is 29 (solidly adult), and doing grad work in hemotology, so one could expect a disciplined, self possessed, mature and well spoken woman. Having done grad work, I know the lifestyle and the incredible focus and discipline and sacrifice it requires. Cara unfortunately didn't convince me whe was a developing scientist. I know there is a wide audience for snarky, teen talking child women main characters, and I respect that everyone has different tastes...it's just not my thing. I keep hoping for a protagonist who is a mature woman with grace and depth, someone who could actually inspire a 300 year old mystical being's passion, devotion and the risking of his life, a woman I could admire. Sadly for me, Kiss Kiss Fang Fang didn't provide her.
