When looking for advice on how to eat healthy, it's critical for me that I know where the information comes from and how trustworthy it is. This book meets both of these criteria. It's empowering me to make well informed choices as a consumer and to feel good about the food I buy (or grow) and eat. Highly recommended and well written summary of the latest scientific knowledge on the subject of nutrition and prevention of disease.
Science/research part was fab especially as not completely US centred (much of the literature in this field is). Will definitely try some of the recipes.
I've been following Dr Desmond on instagram for quite some time and was eagerly looking forward to his book. This didn't disappoint at all. I've read a lot of books on vegan/plant based nutrition and this is one of the best.
I regret that I chose to buy the hard back book instead of the Kindle edition because I like recipe books that I can keep in the kitchen and refer to. However, in this instance it was a mistake!
The actual content is excellent but it is almost impossible for me to read. I am slightly short sighted but this is the first book that I really cannot read except in perfect lighting conditions and with some eye strain. The font is a sans serif in grey and with very fine hairline print that it looks like the printer was running out of ink. The worst parts are where it is faint grey on a green background!
This is a decent introduction to understanding the importance of the gut microbiome and why a whole foods plant-based diet is the key to good health, but the main interest of this volume is the practical information it provides on how to actually eat healthily, with shopping lists, tips, and, most importantly, recipes.
Main diatribe: the medical establishment's lack of background and interest in nutrition Main mantra: improve health by feeding the gut microbiome
I wanted to read this book because it is written by a GI doctor, and I work in the GI world. All too quickly, we treat diseases and disorders with more and more prescriptions. Our food and drink is often the last method of healing we try. This book is a hopeful examination of how our bodies thrive with a plant based diet.
I had this on my recommended list for over a year and after finally buying it online, imagine my surprise when it shows up and is a cookbook!😂🤦🏻♀️ The first 70+ pages are filled with information, statistics and encouraging the plant based lifestyle. So though not your typical book, I’m still including it in my book lineup because I really enjoyed those early pages!
I agree with another reviewer. The typeface and color of the type make it very difficult to read. It looks like it was printed with grey instead of black ink. Will try to send it back.
A good summary of why you should hop on this revolution after which it’s a very good cookbook with chefs behind good recipes. If you are plant based like me you need good recipes.
This Irish Doctor, who now lives in Devon, knows his stuff. The explanations are excellent & recipes are amazing. I had to use my magnifier. The font is tiny.
