A mental disorder of unknown origin has awoken, killing otherwise healthy people. A mental disease, spreading like a virus, without warning. There is no cure, and no way to know who is infected. Amidst the pandemic are four strangers from different walks of life. Each one infected, and each one battling through their own issues of personal strife; isolation, disillusionment, relationships. As the death toll rises, the foursome learns that there is more to the illness than what science can explain. The disease is linked to an otherworldly realm, the land of La Mer. A place of decay and madness, a world outside of logic, ruled and corrupted by a great and terrible force. With their lives in the balance, four strangers must transcend their own personal strife, overcome the dangers of La Mer, and uncover the truth. The truth though, to how La Mer is linked to a mental illness will have consequences not just for the foursome, but all of humanity
Ooooooh this was such a good one! (And a bit scary) A strange illness is inflicting people in the UK, making them act crazy and killing some. Then four infected strangers come together and find out that the illness is otherworldly and beyond what science can explain. Together, they have to discover the truth and save themselves, as well as the rest of the world. Their journey to achieve this was filled with intriguing ups and downs. For lovers of the horror/occult genre, this is a book I believe you’ll really enjoy. It really gets to you.
Loveless - A Book Review of the Novel by Shaun Prentice-Gregory
The Good: -The prologue of this book is great. The best way to describe it would be that it’s one of those prologues where it intrigues you and serves as a great introduction, but you don’t fully understand it, but then as the story goes on, you start to understand it more and more. -The main idea of this book of a contagious mental illness is incredibly fascinating and caused me to be hooked on to the book before I even began reading it! -Most of the large cast of characters in this book are engaging and fun to read about. -The last few chapters of this book promise to deliver a great sequel.
The Bad: -I felt that this book could’ve used a bit more proofreading, since I noticed quite a few mistakes in capitalization, punctuation, and some other things. -This book has two alternating plot-lines and sets of characters, one being set in the normal world with the characters Elena, Eddie, James, and Joe, and the other being set in La Mer with the characters Adonis, Arachne, Amberon, Delta, and Chaucer. The latter plot-line and set of characters interested me and had me invested less than the first one did, until they eventually equaled out in the final third of the book.
I enjoyed this story. The prologue immediately grabs you and sets the tone for the series. The introduction of mental illness was an intriguing take, and while I originally thought the story was headed one direction, I was pleasantly surprised to see it take off in another direction.
The author introduces a large cast, leaving readers with plenty of characters to invest in. At times I felt as if I was reading two different stories, but I suspect now that the first story is complete things will flow a bit smoother in the next.
All in all, Mr. Prentice-Gregory does a fantastic job introducing readers to an exciting world with loads of possibilities. I am excited to see what happens in book two as I suspect the story will delve deeper into a unique world.
