Heartbreakingly beautiful and completely engrossing, USED is packed full of twists, turns, and a gripping romance sure to leave readers emotionally spent and asking for more.
After a decade of lies, hurt, and severe abuse by her brother Lucas, Sabra Valentine is able to breathe.
Lucas is behind bars thanks in large part to Sabra’s quick thinking and self-preservation—even if that’s one more secret she has to keep.
Now, seven years later, life is moving forward, and Sabra is starting to heal, live, and love again with her friends and Trevor Collins by her side. He’s tall, dark, and sexy, and he doesn’t fall for Sabra’s games. The future is finally looking bright—until one phone call shatters everything.
Used is a romantic suspense with domestic thriller elements. Please be aware that there are topics that may be triggers for some readers, and this work is meant for mature readers.
Kate Dunbar is a wife, mom of three, and obsessive tea drinker who loves a great story. She’s passionate about people and learning what makes them tick. You can find her eavesdropping, people watching, and living her best life wherever the winds take her.
Used is Kate Dunbar's debut novel but with the way this book captivated me I would have never guessed. The story follows Sabra Valentine as she's thrust back into her past fears all while trying to move on with her life. I really liked how Sabra's character was depicted and how we got to see every anxiety inducing worry she had played out. The realistic portrayal of her fear made the book even more intriguing and had me gripping my Kindle and feeling just as anxious as Sabra's character. The best part of this book was the raw and unfiltered fear that came off of the pages whenever Sabra's past was brought back into her life.
The fact that Sabra's character was so realistic, though, actually made me want more details of her past. And maybe that's my gruesome, true crime loving brain but there were times that it just felt like the story was holding back because we were getting hints at her past and seeing some of it but not the truly bad parts of it. For me that actually took away from the story and at one point even had me wondering if I was wrong in what I thought had happened.
Overall, this was an amazing book to read and I will certainly be waiting for more from this author. The romance blended really well with the suspense and I adored Sabra's love interest, Trevor, and how he didn't get pushed too far in the background. The main focus was definitely Sabra and her story but Trevor added a lot of interesting moments.

Used is a strong debut novel. It's got some darker themes and is hard to read at times, so go in with caution. The romance took a backseat to the trauma and heroine's story with her abuser, I wish it was a little longer and we would have got more of Trevor and Sabra together. Aside from that, I really enjoyed this one. The audio was great.

This debut novel was something different from my normal reads, but it was good and kept my attention. The subject matter was heavy and might be triggering to some. I feel like the author did a really good job with the sensitivity of the topic. It was in your face, but there was much consideration and tact to it.
Sabra is in a place in her life where things are finally starting to fall into place. She is attending college, auditioning for acting gigs and has a very close friendship with Trevor. She has a gut wrenching past, that included both sexual and emotional abuse at the hands of someone who should have loved her and kept her safe at all costs. Not ruin every aspect of her childhood. She has kept her childhood nightmare to herself. Her best friends knows something happened, but not many details. Her parents are oblivious. One other person knows her darkest hurts, the one who inflicted them upon her.
She allows herself to finally blossom and to try to actually live. Especially since her personal nightmare is serving prison time. A place she helped him get to. She needed to be able to feel a little safe and to be able to breathe. She needed to regain her life back.
Her best friend Micah is the only one she allows in, but beyond that her heart, feelings and trust stay very close to her. She doesn't share any piece of herself beyond the basics. But.... with Trevor, things are starting to feel different. Starting to feel safe. That he could be that safe place she has been yearning for so, so long.
Trevor, Trevor, Trevor... Oh my gosh, this man. He is perfect. I am not sure he has any flaws. Like truly. The author wrote him so well. So much so that he has won my heart. He knew Sabra was skittish, but is allowing her to open up to him on her terms. He doesn't pressure her, just allows her to truly fall and to trust him. I seriously adored them.
One phone call shatters her world. Her nightmare is out and coming home. Two hearts want her. One wants to control and hurt her. To continue to break her. One wants to keep her safe and love her forever. To love her the way she deserves.
This books is grips your heart and doesn't let go. It will break it, crush it and you'll feel like it can't ever be put back together. That's where the hope comes in. Not everything is darkness and fire. Not when you have a Trevor on your side!!
Used is Kate Dunbar's debut novel. It's one she has been writing on and off for years. And I am so glad that she released it to us to read.
This novel felt very real to me - not just the characters but the story itself. It's unfortunately a life others have lived. We've all heard the stories on the news or through others but for a reason I can't explain, Dunbar's book made it all more real and personal to me.
"Nine Steps."
Dunbar does a great job of giving us the details without laying all the gory details out for us. I know for some, they may want that more dark and twisted part to make the book more suspenseful, but it wasn't needed. You can tell that Sabra has a very hard time talking and rehashing her past and that shows through the past reflections. And I think that's why not having those descriptive details works with this book - the character can't handle that and if Dunbar were to go that deep into it Sabra's memories, we would lose the true character of Sabra.
Trevor - oh that boy is a Saint. And I know any mom's out there would love for their young sons to turn out to be just like Trevor. Sabra and Trevor started out as friends four years ago when she first arrived at college. Trevor has always wanted more, but respected Sabra and her reasons for not wanting to ruin what they had. Sabra has always expressed that she's not a commitment type of gal and Trevor has seen that over the years. His loyalty to Sabra won me over immediately - even as a friend, he was there for her.
Dunbar wrote a very real and personal story. Her characters and their story really helped in making this book feel more alive. While I know that those who love their psychological thrillers to be a bit darker, I think that Dunbar still keeps the thrilling suspense alive with just the minute details she gives - it adds to the appeal of not knowing everything.
I hope Dunbar continues to write as I would love to read another novel by her.
3.5-4 stars! I have to say I am pretty proud of Dunbar for having a dream of one day writing something and then writing one heck of a novel in Used. Everything that transpired felt authentic and real and I felt the fear our heroine Sabra felt—the fear of the unknown, of the potential of what could come, and the fear of trying to escape and to finally be free. I loved her hero Trevor who relentlessly pursued her but at her pace and who validated her worth to her time and time again. This may be Dunbar's first novel but I hope it won't be her last. The suspense and the romance were on point. I look forward to more from her <3
Wow! This was an amazing story about a woman trying to move beyond her horrifying childhood. Sabra grew up with a horrible secret that she has never told anyone else. She has been coping with carrying this secret for years. When she meets Trevor, she doesn’t jump into deep feelings but takes her time getting to know him. Life seems to be going right for the first time in her life when she receives a call that shakes her world. Her tormentor, also her brother Lucas, is being released from prison. Suddenly everything changes. In her mind, if she breaks things off with Trevor her brother won’t go after him. This was such a crazy story, but I fell in love with Trevor. He would not give up on Sabra no matter how hard she was pushing him away. Lucas was truly a monster and enjoyed playing mind games with Sabra. I was really engrossed in this story and it did not disappoint at all. Looking forward to more from this debut author.--
Wow! This is supposed to be a debut novel – one can’t tell. A romantic suspense full of twists and turns, some heavy topic/gritty dark details. Fair warning not for the faint of heart. Sabra has been through hell and back. After her brother went to prison Sabra tried to move on with her life. She attends college where she met Trevor. Sabra doesn’t want to get involved beyond friendship even though Trevor was ready for more. Got to love Trevor – he is such a good guy patience, kind, understanding, and always supportive of Sabra. The road to HEA for this couple is quite emotional but it was heartwarming to see Sabra overcome her past trauma, grow and live a full life with a beautiful man by her side. This story was beautifully written with enough suspense that kept reader guessing and intrigue from the beginning until the end. Can't wait to see what this author writes next <3
I took some time to think about this book. To write a proper review! Two days later, I still don't know what to write or how to express my feelings about it. My beautiful Sabra (h): my strong girl who fought till the end to have her happy ending. I loved her courage. What she has been through is indescribable. Imagine being betrayed and violated by the one person who's supposed to protect you and show you what love is! And still, have the bravery to keep moving and trying to stand on your two feet to create that bright future you always dreamt of having. Trevor (H): he's perfect, he was understanding and patient, and no matter how much Sabra tried to push him away, he kept coming back to her to show her that she could trust him. I need a man like Trevor, please! This story was beautiful and full of emotions. It shows you that there's always a light at the end of the dark tunnel, and to keep the faith and keep fighting! I know this book is fiction, but sadly there are a lot of Sabras in this world, and I'm sending them a prayer and wish for them to have their happy ending too! And even if this world is full of monsters, I know for sure that there are Trevors too, who would love unconditionally and help to make life better!
Used was a very beautiful read, more on the emotional side than I was expecting. It is on the dark side and has many triggering topics so be warned. While some can consider Sabra a damsel in distress, much of her issues she deals with on her own. She pushes those who care about her away and suffers in a hell of her own making. However now an adult, Sabra has a BFF and a man who will do anything for her even if it's just offering a shoulder to cry on. I didn't necessarily find this suspenseful since from the beginning we know who the villain is and what he wants. On that note the book does touch on heavy topics like assault, abuse and rape. While the book only hints at these things, the back and forth timelines made it 100% clear that since she was 8 years old her life has been utter hell. I loved watching the relationship evolve between Sabra and Trevor. Trevor clearly more than loved Sabra even when she didn't necessarily deserve it. The harder she tried to push him away the harder he pushed into her life and it was exactly what she needed. This was a really beautiful read and I'm glad Sabra got her HEA because she truly deserved it.
I received a copy of this book from the author - no review required. :-)
I have to say I pestered Kate to share this book with me as soon as I saw she was writing it. I do mean pestered. Anytime she posted about USED I would ask to read it. No shame here!
So this book could be rather difficult for some to read. It touches on a subject that most people don't want to talk about - don't want to face - but is very prevalent in our world. Always has been. Always will be. No need to sweep it under the rug.
Sabra and Trevor are so sweet together. When she gives him her trust it's such a beautiful thing. Just to see her shine and thrive in their relationship. There is hope through love. Real love - not something perverted, twisted, and shameful.
Mrs. Dunbar has written this novel beautifully. I think even if it might be a hard subject for some one - it's still doable in this particular novel. It's not detailed nor is it the center focus. It shows the reader how Sabra overcame her fears for love. Oh how beautiful it is, too.
Used by Kate Dunbar is an intense, epic, ride! This story is narrated by Stella Hunter.
Sabra has had a dark past, that she has kept locked inside for a long time. She finally gives herself to Trevor, who she trusts and eventually comes to love. However, demons from her past that have used her keep coming back to haunt her, so its difficult to truly give her entire self to Trevor. Trevor is persistent, and gives his whole self to her. I love how he becomes her rock. Then one fateful night, Sabra comes face to face with her past...
Stella Hunter was fantastic as Sabra. I truly felt all of Sabra's twisted, and haunted emotions in her performance. Her "Trevor" voice was super tempting, and made you truly root for her to make it work with him. Overall, her performance of this story kept me captivated the entire way!
Kate Dunbar's debut novel was haunting and alluring in all the right ways. This book has some triggers, so I encourage you to listen to the beginning of the novel, to make sure this is the right book for you. This story will leave a lasting impression on your heart, and will give light some tough topics, that are so worthy of being aware of! I really enjoyed this story and I look forward to Micah's story next!
Kate Dunbar's debut, Used, is a blend of thriller and romance that will suck readers in quickly. There are darker themes of domestic violence, so reader beware. You learn of Sabra's past mostly through her memories, so it's not gory or detailed, but it is unsettling.
Sabra is trying to move forward with her life after her brother is imprisoned. She goes to college, and tries to be normal. She makes friends, and meets Trevor. Trevor is dream boyfriend material, but Sabra isn't ready to be in a relationship. So, she and Trevor remain friends even though he wants more.
Trevor is supportive of Sabra in every way in all she experiences. As a reader, your heart hurts for Sabra, but you are so thrilled she has Trevor. You can really feel Sabra's emotions and it creates a very suspenseful read, but also a very deep romance. Readers who like thrillers like Mud Vein by Taryn Fisher and darker romances like Prisoner by Skye Warren and Annika Martin will find Used to be their kind of read!

Used by Kate Dunbar is a phenomenal debut novel. It is raw, emotional and tells the story about a woman who has suffered emotional and physical abuse. Sabra is a fighter. She has been suffering for many years. She has emotional scars and feels completely broken from her past.
Trevor is the perfect man for Sabra. Breaking through her scars was not going to be an easy feat for him but what I loved about him was his patience and understanding through all of it.
Another character I adored is Micah. Sabra's best friend. I loved her so much. Every woman in the world needs supportive best friends like her. Her unwavering support through Sabra’s journey was pivotal and can’t wait for her story next.
This story is dark, suspenseful and gritty and in the end it was beautiful to see Sabra overcome her trauma. The story is well written. It won’t be for everyone but I commend the author on her first novel and look forward to more of her writing to come.
The narration done by Stella Hunter is incredible. She taps in to every raw emotion of the heroine and tells the story perfectly.

This was a debut novel!? wow! What a debut! I have to admit, it was really difficult to read at times, but it really sucked me in and I couldn’t put it down! It hurt my heart that Sabra could never confide in her parents about what she went through growing up. But luckily she finds Trevor when she’s older to make it through. When I was reading this I was thinking, does something like this really happen!? And I thought, sadly it does. It’s just so horrifying to think about. This book was so well written. I loved the characters of Sabra, Trevor, and Micah. There were times where I knew something bad was going to happen but in the end there were quite a few surprises that actually made me gasp. This was such a great debut novel! It’s not for the faint of heart but definitely recommend if you are a fan of romantic suspense books!
I’m having a very difficult time finding the words to describe why this book didn’t rate higher with me. I absolutely loved the characters. Sabra is extremely unique, Trevor is every girls’ dream, and Lucas is absolutely psychotic in the best possible way. The book was rather well written, especially for a new author. My eyes always home in on grammatical and punctuation error, yet they weren’t rampant in this book, so I can’t blame it on that... Fabulous characters, an innovative, exciting premise, and a well written book, so what’s the problem? I don’t know!?! All I can say is that for some reason, I was constantly wanting to skim. Although I can’t pinpoint what exactly it was, there was definitely something missing. Dunbar certainly has talent, so I will definitely give her a chance again!
I’m not sure where to start with this review. Both the author Kate Dunbar and narrator Stella Hunter a new to me. This was a raw, gritty, powerful story that drew me in and kept me on the edge of my seat whilst listening. Please be advised that there is some domestic violence and therefore may be a trigger for some, so you have been warned. The author handled the subject matter with honesty and dignity. After years of abuse Sabra is finally coming into the light with Trevor by her side. It was beautiful to listen to her learn to trust in Trevor and find real love. There were so many twists and turns that I felt as though I was on an emotional roller coaster that wouldn’t stop and let me off. This is a powerful story of determination, of overcoming the horrors of ones past and learning to live, love and trust again. The narration drew me in and brought the story to life for me. Stella Hunter certainly did justice to the characters. I was amazed to learn that this is Kate Dunbar’s debut novel, what a book to start her career on.
5 AMAZING STARS ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ USED BY KATE DUNBAR 💛 WHAT A PHENOMENAL DEBUT NOVEL!
This is Sabra’s Story and so I don't want to give too much away except it’s a story that matters, it shows courage, strength and is definitely an inspiring read.
Kate manages to tackle an exceedingly difficult and dark subject about Physical and emotional abuse. It’s not an easy read at times and it leaves you with no question at all as to what Sabra went through but it was written with such thought, huge amounts of consideration and so much understanding.
You will feel every pounding heartbeat, share every single tear shed, and feel everything Sabra experiences throughout this story as I held my breath and felt my heart break for her so many times.
Whilst Sabra still to this day carried the pain and fear from her past within her she showed such strength and determination in not allowing her past to hinder her future and she is so beautiful inside and out. She has a wonderful best friend in Micah and undoubtedly the most amazing boyfriend EVER who both love and support Sabra unconditionally.
The patience and understanding Trevor shows throughout the book was absolutely beautifully written. He was a true gentleman and all I will say is I fell in love with him instantly.
Alongside the dark side of the story was the most gorgeous love story that developed throughout the book, it was delightful to see them grow as they broke down the walls that stood in their way. Once I started this book I could not put it down and devoured it in record time and couldn't I wait to for the audio to hear Stella Hunter tell the story and I wasn't disappointed. Stella was the perfect choice to bring all the characters to life.
Thank you so much Kate for the ARC and ALC and sharing your story. Believe me it was so worth the journey it took you to write it to have it in my hands.
I really hope we get to hear more about Sabra and Trevor in the future.

⚠️Possible spoilers ahead! The story was not bad... at all, especially knowing this is Kate Dunbar's debut novel. 👍🏻 Only, for me, there was one important thing missing in this book: DETAILS! This book left a LOT (in my case: everything!) to the reader's imagination... The entire book I was waiting for something that never happened!! 😕 If I had read the blurb again before starting the book, I'd have known Sabra was abused by Lucas for 10 years. But, unfortunately, I didn't (my bad!)... so I kept wondering if Sabra was indeed abused by her brother... or not. It was never explicitly mentioned; you (the reader) had to draw your own conclusions all the time. Just like the end: I think Lucas was killed by the police?? Again, no details (besides a white sheet). And maybe I have read too many books with explicit violence, rape and abuse? 😁 Maybe this book was meant as a heart wrenching, sweet love story about a damaged girl and a very sweet guy, who find their HEA despite the girl's dark past?? 💕 Because, IMO, that's what this book was! I wasn't sure about anything I read in this book; a book where you have to read 'between the lines'.... and I prefer to read the actual words (details about the abuse, the violence, the blood, the dirty sex). I don't want to have to make it all up myself. 😏 Because I had to interpret everything myself, my thoughts kept moving in different directions. I was beginning to think Sabra made everything up herself, the notes, the writing in blood, the abuse.... In my mind I was working towards a killing spree, violence, a bloody ending!! 🩸🔪💀🪓💣 But it never got 'that good'! 🤣 So, definitely not a bad story... but it didn't meet my expectations... especially not for a book tagged as 'dark'. Hence my rating of just 3 stars.
I don't know, I was expecting something different, but this is due to my bias because I studied Psychology. I didn't find the main characters believable.
Non saprei, credo che mi aspettassi qualcosa di diverso, soprattutto per via dei miei studi, invece non ho trovato i personaggi principali affatto credibili.
My full review on Used by Kate Dunbar will be posted after release week.
Kate Dunbar's writing style was fantastic and I look forward to seeing what she brings to the table in the future. However, I found myself skimming through many areas of this novel, mainly the flashback scenes. I can't handle seeing a child in that moment, I can't stand the thought of a child's innocence being stripped away at the hands of someone she/he is supposed to trust most in the world. It sets off my rage and increases my anxiety, so I chose to skip those moments. And still, after skipping those moments, my heart hurts, And continues to hurt for Sabra and for all those who have went through and still continue to go through what she went through. I'm human enough to admit when a novel is too much for my emotional state and this one was too hard for me to get through.
With all the emotion and the depth Kat Dunbar poured into this novel, I am very curious to see what she's going to write next and I'll definitely be giving this author another read in the near future.
Wow! What a story and a great debut from Kate Dunbar. Sabra’s story is not one for the faint of heart. This book is tough at times due to the nature of Sabra’s life, full of agony and pain. Her saving grace is Trevor and Micah, her best friends and people she doesn’t think she deserves in her life. Micah is the girl everyone wants to be best friends with. She sticks by your side better than glue and loves you through the thick and the thin. Trevor loves Sabra and he’s going to prove it any which way he can.
Used is a beautifully painful story that tackles a subject that is hard times to read. Trevor and Micah are the light in all the darkness but this will definitely be a book that will stay with you long after you’ve read the last page. If you are a fan of romantic suspense, you absolutely want to pick up this book!
I enjoyed Used, the debut novel by Kate Dunbar. I loved the suspense element. I did have a few theories and was keen to find out if they correct. Well, it turns one, yes! But the rest, not really! lol
Some of the subject matter meant it's not an easy read at times, and there was a particular character that I want to punch well, actually probably a little more than punch, that's for sure, and so I was glad about the way things turned out for him. My heart went out to Sabra because of what she had suffered in her past and therefore was pleased she had Trevor. I liked the connection/relationship that she Trevor shared. Trevor is a keeper, that's for sure.
This one gripped me in places, especially the last few chapters of the book. Overall a good read, and I'm looking forward to Micah's story.
This story has a dark and ominous feel, foreboding, right from the first page. It's clear that Sabra has a tragic past, while it isn't gone into in detail, there's enough there to let you know without a doubt what's happened. The emotional upheaval that can be caused by just a thought, a memory, can ruin more than an evening. Sabra tries to deal with everything on her own, not realizing that she can trust and lean on those closest to her, because she never could before. I liked the friendships between her and Micah and her and Trevor. It's not a pretty story by any means, it's raw, uncomfortable, and real but there are feel good moments sprinkled in that continue to give you hope for Sabra to finally overcome it all and be able to move forward."
Okay so I pretty much read the entire thing last night (or you know, until 4:30am this morning).
The writing style took me a bit to get into it and wasn't sure I was going to like it but I ended up liking the book over all and by the end the writing style seemed to have improved(?).
I loved Trevor, he was great. Where can I get one? (lol) However I didn't like when he introduced himself her her parents and they were all "young man" and "son". Like....what...? He's an associate professor, not some high schooler, I found it very odd/condescending.
Two issues for me were 1) at the very end it explains and 2) I wanted(?)/needed more
Overall a good first book by the author and I’d read mor by her but I was left guessing or filling in too many blanks on my own without feeling like I had enough to find the right answer to the blanks.
I'm going to keep this review short and sweet as although this book wasn't for me, there's no way I'm going to sit here and criticize an authors debut book, and a passion project at that. I'm sure others will love and connect with it in ways that I couldn't. Authors struggle in letting go of any book baby, but especially their first, so bravo to this author for that alone. Will be keeping an eye out for more from her in the future.
What a unique story! This wasn’t what I was expecting. I guess I wanted more of the before than the during but I appreciated the characters in this story. I really liked the indecision of the main character and everything she went through. The end was the best part in my opinion! I would definitely read more from this author
Used is Kate Dunbar's debut novel. Kate is a fellow blogger who was writing this novel for many years. I'm excited to see her make her dreams of publishing come true.
Used is a gritty and haunting tale of sibling domestic abuse and one woman's journey toward stability and happiness. Kate's delicate treatment of this subject matter was very well done. I'm looking forward to reading her next interconnected standalone. This emotion-packed romantic suspense is one-click worthy.
It took me a while to get into this book. The subject matter is hard to listen to not because of any triggers I have just because that breaks my heart. Knowing it had a darker theme helped me got prepared.
The love story is sweet patient and kind. I loved that even though Sabra pushes Trevor away again and again. He doesn’t take it personally he is there when she needs him.
Sabra has a lot she is working through and the only part of the story I just didn’t get. Was why she didn’t open up sooner she had all these people in her corner willing and able to help. But she kept so much to herself. When the first roses appeared, then the writing, I guess then is when I expected her to say something. But she didn’t.
Trevor was delicious and I am so glad we got a good guy for Sabra. He was still manly, he wasn’t a push over he was perfect for Sabra.
I really enjoyed the narration as well, the male voice was good not over done at all.
WOW!!! Talk about knocking it out of the park. Kate Dunbar has done just that with this book. For being a debut novel for this author....it was phenomenal!!!!
This book was filled with heart wrenching emotion but it was also a story of hope and healing. I will warn you this book does cover a very tough subject. Even though it was written with tact and grace, nothing is overly graphic, it will still be tough to read in spots.
I don't want to say much more about the storyline because I think this is a story you need to experience for yourself. This story needs to unfold by itself for each reader so you get the full effect and emotion behind this story.
Used is a standalone novel and is told solely from the female POV. Most of the story is told in the present time frame but we are given some chapters from the past to fill in the blanks of what happened to Sabra. I really loved how this story played out and how the author wrote the story.
You could feel everything Sabra was feeling and my heart broke for her so many times. But I loved that she had her best friend Micah to lean on and also Trevor...who to me is the ultimate book boyfriend. I absolutely fell in love with him. I loved his strength and determination when it came to Sabra. We don't see many Heroes like him these days. As for Sabra....she was one broken heroine. She had every right to be and I loved how far she came throughout the story. I almost wish there would've been an epilogue for the story to show us how she is doing a couple years down the road.
I would 100% recommend this book. But just be warned that this isn't an easy story to read. But I loved the story of hope and healing that she took Sabra on. So if your looking to try a new author, give this book a chance....I don't think you will be sorry.
