My Review

Genre-wise this is a psychological thriller romance and it captivated me from the second I picked it up.
I really enjoyed this story it’s the first part of a trilogy and was just so unusual and unique.
It made such addictive reading and I was glued to the unfolding drama desperate for Ember and Christopher to triumph against all the odds stacked against them.

It’s a story that draws you in focusing on a demented jailor that is determined to have those under his control obey his twisted rules and id

I don't usually read a lot of dark romances, and although this book does have dark elements, it's more of a psychological thriller/romance and I LOVED that. It was like reading a 20/20 episode with all the toxic love and sex involved. This book is definitely one of a kind and I just couldn't get enough!

There's so much more to these characters than initially meets the eye; and I really don't want to give away any of the plot especially since this is the first part of the trilogy, but I just coul

Captive Bride is the first book in The Secret Bride series, written by author Alta Hensley. I quickly became captivated by this dark, twisted, and intense story, not being able to turn the pages fast enough! Captive Bride tells the story of Ember and Christopher, and it’s unlike anything that I’ve read before. I’m dying to fill you in about everything, but this is one story that you need to read yourself!

Christopher & Ember’s Story Is A Thriller Steeped In Impending Danger. Their Journey Begins In Horror At The Hands Of A Demented Religious Zealot, Papa Rich. The Pair Does Develop Feelings For One Another, But This Is No Standard Romance.

This is the first book of the Secret Bride trilogy, which is Christopher and Ember’s story. This book ends in a cliffhanger.

The trilogy includes:
1. Captive Bride
2. Kept Bride
3. Taken Bride

Papa Rich, Ember’s father in this story, is a character

Captive Bride is a new series by Alta Hensley and is such a psychologically twisted tale. Christopher Davenport is heir to a textile empire, but instead he makes his living through and is famous for his photography. He comes to the abandoned town of Hallelujah Junction to take pictures of the infamous ghost girl in the schoolhouse window. Rather than meeting a ghost, Christopher does meet the devil of the dead Nevada town, disguised as a religious man eking out a living as a park ranger with his ...more

This was like a slow decent ride into hell. It was brutalizing to get through but I could not put it down once it started and wanting to leave this universe was a horrible feeling when I tried because these characters were so engaging and O. M. G.! What I would not have given to be a fly on the wall. Oh! Wait! I! Was! It felt real and was so believable that the reader has a hard time getting through the muck to finally see what is coming but it will be too late at that point. This is by far one ...more

Without hesitation this is my favorite book, so far, this year. It is an addicting, yet disturbing and eerie, which I just couldn’t stop reading. The description of spaces and people helped me feel like I was there living in this twisted world. It was so well written that I actually feared these men, I wanted to flee yet I too was trapped in this horrific world with them finding it impossible to escape by putting the book down.

Ember has been living in Hallelujah Junction since she was a little girl left alone to fend for herself. Richard took her home and gave her the safety and home that she didn’t have living in the town below Hallelujah Junction. Richard’s a man who likes living off the grid, he likes Hallelujah Junction because there aren’t many people around all the time. They get tourists, but no one lives in the Junction but him and Ember. When trespassers come and don’t heed the signs all around, they pay the ...more

Captive Bride, given the title, is not like most most kidnapping/held against their will dark romance storylines out there. In this case, both the bride and groom are the ones being held hostage. Ember's Papa Rich is the one holding them both. This alone helps to make this story stand apart from others with a "captive" theme.

There are two things readers should know before delving into this book. One is that it does end in a cliffhanger. Although I was expecting one, it came at such a critical po

A dark and totally frightening reality a young girl has lived for twenty years
This is a book that once you begin reading it is simply impossible to put it down the cruelty this girl gas lived through since the age of five it is surprised, she has actually stayed sane. Papa Rich is the man that raised her since she had been simply abandoned in a filth, needle infested trailer her mother simply telling her she was leaving and that she should sit outside every day and someone would find her.

Christopher could not be faulted if his first thoughts after waking up from a hit to the head were “Your next stop, the Twilight Zone”. Waking up chained to the wall in a dungeon-like room was bad enough but then to be confronted by a seemingly crazy man and a rail thin blonde haired woman/child was even more unreal. This book really feels like an episode from Rod Sterling’s famous TV show (except for the spanking and sex). Richard is truly a murderous psychopath with a severe sadistic bend. His ...more
I have previously read Alta's Top Shelf series, so I had a general idea that this wasn't going to be your typical dark romance. Each book in Top Shelf has several moments that really make your head spin. Your eyes are moving as fast as they can, and you just want to get to the next scene to see if it's crazier then what you just read. That's what I was expecting going into Captive Bride. I think my expectations were a little too high, or I didn't pay attention enough to the blurb to really get t ...more

Captive Bride is the first book in the Secret Bride series, a trilogy that will follow the same couple, a dark romance that will leave you gasping for breath and needing to know more even when you’re desperate to look away. Christopher is looking for the next beat picture when his world is rocked and changed. Ember has only known her own world, to be a ghost hiding away. What fate brings together cannot be undone, but will hell swallow them whole first?

I am still struggling to get my breathing and heart rate under control. For me, this book was like witnessing a horrific accident where you need to look away, but you can’t make yourself do it—you just keep turning the pages. When Ms. Alta Hensley stated that this was the darkest she had written, she wasn’t lying.

As a reviewer, I must keep this short and not give anything away, I guess this could be considered a psychological thriller. The story has the good, the ba

I have not read a book by Ms Hensley yet that I have not thoroughly enjoyed. I read this in just one sitting. I fell in love with the main characters which are well developed and interesting. Well... not the villain of the story as he is not someone meant to be liked. He is dark and dangerous.
What captivated me the most is the dynamics between Ember and Christopher, so much so that I'm just dying to find out what actually happens next. Ember is understandably reserved and cautious having being

I hadn't read the blurb for this book but love Alta Hensley's dark writing so picking it up was a no brainer. OMG!!! It's on another level!! Like a moth to a flame I couldn't be pulled away from this book; I thought I had Stockholm Syndrome at one point I was so immersed in the story!!!

We all know that AH is the queen of dark erotica but this book doesn't go down that road; this time round it's mainly in the mind, psychologically restraining and challenging, holding the characters as well as th

A dark twisted reality....

What started out as a simple trip to take photos for the respectable magazine he works for takes a sudden turn that he never saw coming.
Because the next thing he knew he was trapped in some backwards reality pan absolutely nothing around him made any sense especially not to a modern man like him.
Then there's the young woman Ember who's quiet presence's added more to the mystery.
Ember swore up and down that the man she calls the ranger is who's also her father;

I always love when an Alta Hensley book comes out.
I know I’m going to get a tantalizing edge of your seat read.
And Captive Bride was absolutely that!
I highly recommend going into this first bk of the trilogy with the blurb and reading nothing with spoilers in it or any reviews that give too much info on the plot.
I loved experiencing the story with only the blurb.
Going into that way kept me more on edge and more riveting in the story and the outcome.

This is one crazy ride! Chilling, gruesome, bazaar but mesmerizing. A deranged park ranger and his captives, his "daughter" and her husband-to-be. The setting in a mining ghost town turned park is chilling. Daughter Ember is a sympathetic heroine as the young woman in the clutches of Papa Rich since a young age. I really felt her dilemma with her acceptance of her situation and choosing physical wellbeing over potential freedom. The mental torture is killer when Papa Rich goes crazy. His crazy i ...more

Captive Bride is the 1st book in the Secret Bride Trilogy. It is told from duel perspectives and ends in a cliffhanger. Oh, and it is one crazy train of a ride down a deep, dark rabbit hole. Alta Hensley writes dark psychological thriller romance and Captive Bride is all that and more.

Book is based in an abandoned mining town in Nevada. Everyone has left town, including Ember’s mother. Papa Rich, the ranger assigned to the area, takes her in.

Crazy Town!!

That is exactly where Alta Hensley takes her readers, to crazy town. This review will be vague to protect the storyline.

While it seems impossible to have no choice to unwillingly take a bride, that is what happens to Christopher when his work assignment goes all kinds of wrong. He went from taking pictures to losing all of his freedoms in a split second. He's a strong willed man and that is the only thing that is going to help him out of this situation. That and his new bride he nee

Cliffhanger...trilogy series vs standalone series

This is the first book I've ready by Alta Hensley. I chose it because of the cover and book blurb. I loved both! CAPTIVE BRIDE had a good storyline going, but the blurb did not match the book. I was expecting it to be darker. I felt for Christopher and Ember. Stockholm syndrome and survivors guilt was strong with Ember. Christopher had to work at staying sane and he was incredibly patient with Ember. Loved those two characters and their interactio

This is the first book in a new series that is another "edge of your seat" dark romance with Alta's twist and turns with flawed and naïve characters you get invested in. The three characters introduced in this serial are Ember, Christopher and Papa Rich. Papa Rich took Ember when she was a abandoned child by her mother and is strict with the rules of not being seen and is very religious. They live in a old abandoned ghost town, Hallelujah Junction, which has posted "No Trespassing" around it and ...more

I'm not even sure as to what I just read when it comes to Captive Bride, especially since it's not a standalone so there's more to the story. I have to say that I'm all for seriously twisted stories, but this one took the cake, especially with the heroine, Ember, coming off so very immature & naive like she did. I mean I understood why, but it did get frustrating to read after a bit to be honest. And Christopher didn't come off like the strong hero that I'm all about, but then again, it could be ...more
