I never asked to be an angel. Truthfully, being an angel kinda sucks.

But some angels don’t get harps. We hunt demons.

I might be a social weirdo. And okay, I black out whenever I fly and wake up naked in random places. I can only sleep in windowless rooms. I have that gun problem. Oh, and I can’t drink alcohol, since I randomly start fires.

But I, Dags Jourdain, do good. Sort of. I mean, I try.

When I’m not hunting demons, I work as a P.I. in Hollywood, California.

One night, I get in a demon fight in an alley, and accidentally save the life of a movie star, and everything changes for me.

Meanwhile, someone opened a hell portal under the Hollywood sign, a dead guy left me his dog, and a homicide detective who hates me from high school is trying to decide if I’m a serial killer.

Did I mention being an angel kinda sucks?

I, Angel by Julie Light is the first book of her Angels in L.A. series, a paranormal angel suspense with elements of romance.

Dags Jourdain is an angel. And let me tell you, I was hooked on this book after the blurb from his perspective. He can’t drink alcohol because he’ll randomly start a fire? Hilarious! Living in a windowless space in Los Angeles, he uses his private investigator job as a cover for his demon hunting activities.

Ever since he went through the Change, weird unexplainable things happen around him. His LAPD classmate from high school can’t decide if he’s a serial killer or a good guy. But after he saves the life of a Hollywood starlet his life takes a 180 turn into the supremely weird, because not only has someone opened a portal to hell under the Hollywood sign, a dead guy has left him his dog. Can he figure out how to close the portal in time while dog sitting?

I LOVED Dags! I enjoyed his dry humor and cynicism immensely. But I’m getting a bit ahead of myself. Julie Light has done an outstanding job with the world building revolving around angels and of course Dags in particular. She gave us enough to keep flipping through the pages and yet not enough leaving us wanting more.

I, Angel is action packed from start to finish, with a hints of romance I can’t wait to read more of.

Paranormal Angel mystery

No plot spoilers
No potential triggers
No grammatical or editorial errors
I gave five stars because from the first page I was hooked. Dags is a hard character to like or empathise with, but the author managed to make him soft enough around the edges that my empathy rose without my realising. The subject of his affection, Phoenix, is more difficult to relate to, being an obnoxious starlet at times and non descriptive at others, there's just not enough of her for a reader to form an opinion.
I totally loved the writing style, but hated that it ends not exactly on a cliff hanger, but setting up the next book in this series.
There is loads of swearing but only one instance of sex, and even then it's pretty tame.

I, Angel is the first book of the Angels of LA series. Andrijeski has done it again! She's created another unique and fast-paced series. As always, the read is full of suspense, creative world-building, and an interesting hero with a bad case of social awkwardness. Read this in one day and immediately started the next book. Can't wait to see where the series goes.

Meh. The characters are not really likeable. Couldn't root for them. The female protagonist had no real mind of her own. The male protagonist didn't really have a backbone. Plus, all the holes in the story were annoying. I know they are there to make it a serial, but dang, fill in one or two of the "whys". I had a hard time finishing this one. Don't think I'll read more...

I think this may be my lowest rated book!!! 😳

Seriously, this has all the ingredients of a meaty series!
A bungling Angel with powers "out-of-this-world", a passage that should not be open, a bend towards native american practices, a heroine that has no idea she is one, yet, an iffy boyfriend, a sassy BFF, a torn Hero, and even creatures with interestingly changing eye colors. Did I miss something? Oh yes, the hero getting beat up. Repeatedly!
It starts with a bang and ramps up quite quick with surprises in quick succession. Loads of questions to be answered, so I assume this will be a 'longer' series? Will it, will it??? That ending.... I was hoping for at least a hint on book #2! But, no! Ms Light has to be mysterious!
So I guess I'll have to wait for the next book.

Dags Jourdain is an angel - just not the kind who has a harp and the celestial chorus, but instead the kind that hunts demons. What that does mean is that he is a social weirdo who likes a rather strange and solitary life due to the fact that he will black-out when he flies and will wake up in random places completely naked. He also has to sleep in a windowless room and can't drink alcohol due to a habit of randomly starting fires. He earns his living working as a PI in Hollywood, California around the demon-hunting however, life changes after he gets into a fight against a demon in an alley and saves the life of a movie star. He then discovers that someone has opened a hell portal underneath the Hollywood sign, a dead guy has left him and he has to cope with a homicide detective who hates him since high-school who suspects he is a serial killer. All of a sudden life really sucks. Can he come out of all of this with his life and freedom?

Wow - this was definitely an action-packed story as Dags went from one crisis to another doing his best to remain as the good guy while trying really hard to avoid prison. It was a very fine line that he was trying to stick to but all credit to him as he was able to achieve what he had to do while not getting into really deep trouble. I loved the power that he had when he really needed it and the self-control he was able to keep even though he was relatively inexperienced at what he was doing. I really hope he gets the chance to explore the events he experienced in the next book in the series and that we get to see the actors that he worked with in this book. Well written, it was easy to feel and understand the thoughts and emotions that the characters were experiencing in this book. I'm looking forward to book 2 of this series.

“I, Angel” is the first installment in the “Angels in L.A” series by Julie Light, and already a huge favorite. This is exactly how Urban Fantasy should be conceived, it has it all: atmosphere  (noir L.A, do I need to say more), background story (a guy whose life has been forever changed by unexpected events), plot (supernatural P.I. who juggles his official investigation business in Hollywood with his fate as demon hunter), and then… then is Dags Jourdain, said P.I. and the most interesting guy ever to glaze the UF verse. Imagine Angel (yes, the one from Buffy) without senseless brooding and real wit dry humor, and an uncanny power for accurate observation (usually called cynicism by those who don’t have it), a tendency to end up naked in the most inappropriate places (don’t blame he! It’s a side effect of his power), and a very pragmatic approach to (his supernatural life), the fact that he is also easy on the eyes is just a bonus, did I mention he is demon hunter angel. There is not enough stars in Hollywood to rate this guy 😊

Julie Light has created an amazing character, infusing him with humor, credibility, charisma and intelligence and making him come alive throughout the pages. The story is fast-paced, action-packed, original and interesting from start to finish. There is caveat though: once you meet Dags you would not be able to escape his charm, the lure of the….. angel will have you forever in its grasp. There is also the slight issue with the book eventually ending, but do not despair, the next one is already available 😉

Kicking off a new private eye series within an already crowded field, ex-journalist JC Andrijeski introduces what has become a de rigueur supernatural element to the narrative arc – which adds the extra pizzazz whenever the plot takes unexpected zings to left stage.
The main character is pitched as a private eye, but Dags Jourdain hardly has to work up any investigative sweat as he has the advantage of being able to read auras around others. What comes more into play is his fighting prowess – thanks to some ‘angelic’ powers that he has mysteriously gained.
So when he is faced with a client who emits no aura, this PI gets confused – especially when the case he’s hired to handle turns into a bodyguard stint that further stinks of demonic influences.
Jourdain also comes under the scrutiny of the local police when not one, but two deaths occur in his house in rapid succession. When problems escalate, together with the clients insisting on tagging along to ‘help’ Jordain, matters come to head in a hidden cave featuring a hellish landscape.
While there are enough twists to the plot to keep the reader entertained, the conclusion makes it clear this narrative still has lots more reveals lined up in subsequent books.

I don't know what possessed me to stay away so long

I popped my JC cherry on the Bridge and Sword series. I've never loved/hated a book before Rook. I'd read avidly and then got totally into the character's frustration and out it down only to take a short walk and gird myself to pick it up again. Every. Single. Time.
I've read that series thrice. I dumpster dived used book sites looking for the original paperbacks, previously dubbed Allie's War, between each stretch between the Bridge re-releases. Each novel was rapid cycling, bi-polar crack. I was addicted to the manic moments and equally drawn to the periodic downturns (when I had to get my "gird" on) right along with the main chatacters.
I devoured the Quentin Black series twice and I'm about to start it again to hit the newer ones and Nick's spinoff series in sequence.
I loved Slave Girl/Alien Apocalypse series. Her stand alone novels are brillient. The only bummer was the premature death of The Morph series.
Jc Andrijeski's books are an immersive adventure where the reader experiences vicariously each thrill, every success and the depth of despair alongside the characters on every page. Andrijeski's novels are "E" ticket rides that makes Space Mountain pale in comparison.

This is a good start to a series, but it was a bit confusing until the end, where it started to come together, but there was still just as many questions in my mind at the end, as there were in the beginning, just different ones. The world building still needs some attention but I think the author deliberately left us readers in the dark and learned along with Dags. This book does some nice twisting and turning and will throw you off a bit when it doesn’t end up exactly how you think it will. There is a beginning of a romance with Dags and Phoenix, apparently they are fated to be together, but I’ll let the readers find out more about that themselves.

This is a good urban fantasy, and it’s a refreshing change from the vampire/shifter worlds. I did like the way that the characters were introduced and how that came together and adding Steve McQueen was a nice touch, definitely moving on to book two.

r/suggestmeabook: I want a fast-paced adventure through Hollywood with human turned avenging angel, private first class.

The worst part about this book: It ended before I was ready for it to. The fast pace, the clever dialogue, and the fun characters made it a ride I wasn’t ready to get off yet. Part of it was that there are so many unanswered questions, although it was a logical break point.

Be prepared, though—given the blurb about the book was done in first person, I was a little thrown when I started reading and it was a third person narration. But that lasted only momentarily, as I was immediately drawn into the story.

A very good urban fantasy

This was on free offer, and sounded intriguing, so I gave it a try.
It was much better than I’d hoped; well paced, believable characters, and a strong plot. It was slightly reminiscent of the style of the Dresden Files, which is a high compliment. I’ll be buying of this authors work.
A couple of minor niggles: there were far too many instances of Dag’s jaw hardening, and strange phraseology - “… he said, gruff,” “… he said, “… she said, impatient,” “… she said, blunt.”
There are numerous examples of this, when the proper use of the adverb - gruffly, impatiently, bluntly - would be more correct.
As I say, minor niggles. I enjoyed the book a great deal, and will certainly read the rest of the series.

Needs major edits

The book simply doesn’t make sense. The writing is very disjointed where are you feel like you’re missing out on information that you should’ve already had. Maybe the book was over edited to the point they took out necessary pieces of writing or maybe the writer had no idea how to write characters and believable motives.
The characters act weirdly and awkwardly to each other and it’s hard to read. The characters tell you over and over again that they are confused by what they are doing and they don’t understand their own motives, so readers can never connect with the characters because we don’t understand what drives them. Very one dimensional

I like the subject of the paranormal, and I liked this one because the central character, Dags, obviously has a lot of problems with the powers that he unexpectedly acquired. He is a very likeable character, he doesn't take himself too seriously and I found it easy to sympathise with him. I feel that this first novel, and the free epilogue offered at the end, really are just the start - there is a lot more to this story in the subsequent books, so I would like to try and read them all. I want to know what happens in his fight against demons - and his feelings for the young film star who is in some way connected with him

This is the first book in a series by J.C. Andrijeski. The main character is known as Dags for short. but translated means "kills many". He doesn't understand who he is or why he has certain powers, so he has shut himself off from society as a whole. He has an apartment with no windows and does not socialize. He knows he is a demon hunter and thinks this is the purpose for his life until he saves a young movie starlet by the name of Asia from a demon one night. This is where the story begins, and he starts to understand who he is and what his purpose is.

Love this Angel-guy book.

Andrijeski rocks! I loved the Quinton Black series and I started this book without looking at the author. At the book’s end I noticed the author’s name because I wanted to be sure I followed this one. Wow! It was then that I realized why this book was exceptionally good. Loved this characters, the story, and hope to see more! Loved it. Thanks, j.c. Andrijeski!

Interesting read

What is Dag? An angel? Why is he here on earth? Who are demons? So many questions and some action, and maybe meeting the person destined for him? The book left a lot of questions but I'm very interested in the story line. It didn't end in a cliffhanger, but it wasn't and ending either . I enjoyed the writing and it was easy to fall into the story. I'll be reading the next book.

Interesting story with a different premise. I'm sorry it ended when it did and how it did, and with me expecting more because my ereader said I still had story to go, but that doesn't change how awesome the read itself was. Definitely worth reading - whether you're into angels as an urban fantasy character or not. (Although, don't go into this one with any preconceived notions about angels. It might harsh your day. Dag isn't your every day kind of angel.)

Surprisingly good!

Apparently I bought this book a while ago, I don’t recall. I’m so upset I waited so long to read it! It’s a really cool concept for a story and I enjoyed the writing a lot. I was a little tired of reading that he “scowled” or “frowned” but outside of that I loved it! It reminded me of a show that I loved when I was young called the greatest American hero. Highly recommend this book, I’ll be reading the rest of the series.

I read the whole story, and although there were interesting elements: wings, flying through the air, demons inhabiting humans -- I never could figure out the story. The main character was clueless and I had to skim pages and pages of his not knowing what was going on. WTF?so, 3 stars because it was well-written, no typos.

A different kind of angel

Dags is a different kind of angel. There are no harps and fluffy clouds following him around. He doesn’t even really know who he has become. He’s an unwilling hero, without social skills in an interesting take on the consequences of being inebriated in supernatural fiction genre. I’m downloading the free epilogue, then the next book.

I'm not really convinced by this first instalment (but then again, when am I really?). I skimmed a lot and it wasn't the action packed PI supernatural romance novel I am used to from Andrijeski.. but I do see some potential and will read the next instalment. the 'plot twist' at the end of this book was the least twisty twist I ever read from Andrijeski. And some. Saw it coming from miles.

Soooooooo good!!!!

Dags isn't what you'd call 'normal', not by a long stretch, hasn't been a quite a while now.

One night he sees a woman being dragged into an ally, he realises the man that has her is possessed.

From there, his life gets complicated, REALLY complicated!

Totally enjoying the start of this series 😁😁👍🏻👍🏻👍🏻

Angel Mystery

This book has the feel of a romance, but most of it is a paranormal mystery. Dag’s entire existence is such a puzzle, and the drama he’s drawn into captured my attention from the first page.

I’m looking forward to the rest of the series as he and Phoenix work through their complicated relationship.

Wow! I really enjoyed reading this book. Dogs, the main character, is learning about his powers and what they mean. He is a PI in LA and tries to do good. But misfortune seems to follow him like a magnet. But it is interesting to see how he solves those problems.
