Philip Gooden does a fantastic job in summarizing the main points of Dicken’s (sometimes long and tedious) plots. And the illustrations are so fun and quirky!! These helped my understand the ending of Little Dorrit (one of those WHAT JUST HAPPENED endings and WHO is connected to WHO?) Gooden had his job cut out for him on that one. ( Not to knock Little Dorrit at all - it’s one of my FAVS!!)

Gooden’s work reminded me how GOOD Tale of Two Cities and Great Expectations was while refreshing my memory for the plots of David Copperfield and Hard Times.

This would be maybe a 4th grade reading level. If you’re looking for a child’s edition with a higher reading level, the Illustrated Classics Editions would be your next best bet.

Cute condensed version of my holiday tradition. The narrator was charming and pleasant to listen to, and made the story lively.

If you want a really quick overview of the book or are trying to introduce young readers to dickens, these will do the trick. But they aren’t very true to the original stories, and have been given happier endings to make them more enjoyable for kids.
