Angel's Kite / La estrella de Ángel

Rate this book
No one knows what happened to the bell in the church tower. Did the priest sell the bell to a foreign collector? Did revolutionaries melt it down and turn the metal into cannons? Or was it just magic? Whatever the reason, the town hasn't been the same since it disappeared. To heal the pain of this loss, Angel, the young kite maker, creates a beautiful kite showing the whole town — including the missing church bell. After an exciting chase and a lonely night on a cold mountaintop with his three loyal dogs, Angel succeeds in bringing back the bell to his beloved town.

Summary: This beautiful text was written in English and Spanish and told the story of a little boy named Angel. Angel strives to create something his entire town would appreciate and what he creates results in a miracle.
Evaluation: I appreciated the fact that the book was bilingual. Half of the page was written in English first and the bottom half was the same text but written in Spanish. This allows multiple groups of students to successfully read the book. The ending was a little abrupt which is why I gave it three stars. Some of the content wasn't important to the story and sounded like a sort of filler. Overall, it was a good book and can be used in the classroom several ways.
Teaching Idea: This text can be used to introduce a comprehension strategy such as visualization. Without showing the students the original illustration, the teacher would pick a specific segment of the text for the students to create a picture in their head. They can draw a picture based on the imagery in the segment and compare it to each other’s drawings and the illustration in the book.

Summary: Angel misses the church bell of his city. It brought such beauty and happiness to the community until it disappeared one day. Angel made kites to bring color to the town. One day he flew his kite and it went up into the air and did not come back. He heard bells ringing and ran home!
Eval: This was a good book representing what the bell meant to this boy and his town. I enjoyed the pictures. It was almost like angel's wish came true and the happiness of the town was restored as a result of his efforts and it showed a good lesson.
Teaching Tip: I would have the students draw the imagery they saw when reading about the kite turning into a star and make a class kite with the pictures. We would discuss important parts in our town and how we would feel if they went missing.
