This has been on my shelf for a long while - 22 years by the look of it as I remember buying it and others in the new Penguin Modern Poets series shortly after they were published in the early nineties. Like most of my poetry books I've dipped into it every now and then, often revisiting the same favourite poems, but this time I've read it cover to cover. I enjoyed it very much. The three poets chosen balance each other very well: James Fenton's foreign correspondent's eye and his sense of the impact of war on ordinary people has a counterweight in Blake Morrison's domestic, largely northern view (his long poem The Ballad of the Yorkshire Ripper is one of the best and bleakest poems in the book). And then there's Kit Wright's witty and humorous, sometimes angry Kentish voice. An excellent collection.
