Mateo Villani is darkness wrapped in Armani. He's a six-foot tall, ruggedly-handsome savage, a notorious gangster who's bedded half of Manhattan...and now he's my fiancé.
My father betrayed me, signing my life away to the cocky bastard whose personality is colder than a block of ice. Mateo crushed my ambitions when he slid his ring onto my finger. He stole my life away and now he's determined to mold me into a dutiful mob wife.
But I have news for him. I obey no one.
As the days pass, I am more and more determined to hate him, to resist the deviant fantasies that swirl through my mind when he’s near. But before long, I can't live without the bound wrists, his rough hands, and sinful body.
I find myself longing for him...and his punishment.
I despise my fiancé. But it doesn’t stop me from craving him even more.
SAVAGE RULER is the first book in the SINFULLY SAVAGE series by USA Today Bestselling Author Kristen Luciani. This Dark Italian / Irish Arranged Marriage Mafia Romance is a standalone suspense novel, complete with a guaranteed HEA and no cliffhangers. Blazing hot bedroom scenes with a little bit of kink are intended for mature readers only!
Kristen Luciani is a USA Today bestselling romance author, momtrepreneur, and a beauty product junkie with a penchant for stilettos, Silicon Valley, plunging necklines and grapefruit martinis. As a deep-rooted romantic who prefers juicy drama to fill the lives of anyone other than her, she tried her hand at creating a world of enchantment, sensuality, and intrigue, finally uncovering her true passion. No pun intended…
This book was just....no. NO! Firstly, the blurb says bad ass heroine...where?! Heaven was whiny for the entire book, she was never ready to handle situations, always beating herself up after, and begging her father to 'pick me! pick me!' If you are this underboss then you need to act like one and not like a soldier hoping to get picked for the team. Secondly, Matteo owns a sex club yet the first sex scene is on page 157 of a 325 page book?!wtf Thirdly, its an arranged marriage book....wtf is the marriage?!...page 206 So what do you ask the first two hundred pages were of...NOTHING freaking nothing but a whiny heroine begging for a chance to run an empire and an H pretending to be the baddest mafia boss in Manhattan. Why say pretending?...I don't know if the author forgot that he was the crime lord of Manhattan but around page 160 he runs into another syndicate boss who has him sputtering and threatening him....and he TAKES IT!!! WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK?! If I'm reading a book about a man that razed through Manhattan to be the ruler of it, why the fuck is cartel leader sneaking up on him IN HIS OWN CLUB?! Ain't nobody supposed to be getting to him that easily! Seriously....please just stick to contemporary romance and leave the mafia romance to people who actually KNOW what being a mafia boss entails.
Style: Dark Mafia Romance Story: 4/5 Enjoyment: 3.5/5 Dark Level: 2/5 Sexual: GOOD Triggers: No Male: Sexy, Alpha & Calculating Series: Pages: Loc. 3816 Kindle Unlimited: Yes
STORY: In the beginning, the way Matteo’s POV is done, damn near erotic, dark with a hint of danger, especially in the BDSM club scene, it pulls you in, and he had my full attention. I like Matteo. He is sexy, calculating and is taking what he wants. When I’m introduced to Heaven, I thought she was a spitfire and a little hellion. Of course, she is an under boss for her father’s clan so she has to be strong. I thought the story was good and kept me flipping the pages.
CHEMISTRY: I want to say that I love strong women in my stories, but sometimes when they are so strong it’s constant bickering. This can be a turn off. This also is my personal taste and preference when this is noted. Matteo’s and Heaven’s chemistry was good especially for me when she started giving up a bit of control.
SECONDARY CHARACTERS Heaven’s brothers all sounds yummy. There were some good secondary characters and I didn’t feel there were too many being thrown at me.
Overall, I like the story for this one. You have two strong individuals that will keep you entertained.
***I don’t equate these stories to real life. It’s about personal taste and what you would or want to tolerate with the books you read. I know we all have different opinions and preferences with what we read and hope this review was helpful.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
I just read this last night and I am still reeling from its greatness right now! Good Lord, ya’ll … Matteo and Heaven both are a thing of beauty and their story was fire!
I know that mafia stories have an inherent plot that is suspenseful with storylines full of drama and lies and twists and whatnot but this story was epically extra in all the right ways! Matteo and Heaven sparked off the pages from the get-go and the storyline built on that spark. It was an all-consuming read for me. I could not put it down.
I picked out this book because I’m on a mafia romance kick lately and it has completely sold me on Kristen Luciani, a new-to-me author with this book. From the well thought out plot to the growth of the characters to the chemistry and drama and twists and just overall dynamics of the entire story, it was all a 5-STAR experience for me and I cannot wait to dive into this author’s backlist soon!
Update: 🎧🎧AUDIO REVIEW🎧🎧 – May 2023
This was the first book I read by Kristen Luciani back in 2021 and it was so good I’ve tried to devour all her words since and I’m pretty close to having everything she’s every published read! Sometimes I get on a roll with my reading and forget to review (lol) but trust & believe this woman can write dark romantic suspense with the best of them!
But I digress. Today I want to talk about my listening experience with Savage Ruler!
Sarah Puckett & Tor Thom had the hairs on the back of my neck tingling with their narration! This story was fire when I read it and it exploded in my head when I listened to it. Tor Thom’s rich baritone made for such a perfect Mateo and Sarah killed it as Heaven! I cannot wait until Kristen gets the entire Sinfully Savage Mafia in audiobook format!
Plot Summary : Heaven's life takes a serious turn when she finds out that her father sold her to Mateo to save himself. Now she was his fiance and had to marry the man who Was cold as ice but also hot as sin. He clipped her wings as soon as he had her and there was no length he wouldn't cross to destroy her.
Mateo had a plan. And unfortunately for the Princess , he had to destroy her. But she certainly did not make that easy for him. Soon he found himself being enticed by her and all his plans were at the risk of being ruined.
Overall Opinion : I loved this one!! Mateo was one of the hottest heroes I have encountered and I finished this one in one sitting. Mateo and Heaven are fire and I loved everything about these two!
The storyline was amazing and I loved , freaking loved the chemistry between the main characters. It was sizzling hot. This was the first book that I have read by this author and I am seriously impressed! The way it's written is off the charts hot and amazing. I would definitely be checking out more of her books and would also highly recommend this book to all the Dark arrange marriage Mafia Romance Lovers out there!
This says that it's a standalone with no cliffy, but it's also a series, and it does end with a cliffy - soooooooo it's not really a standalone, right? 🤷 🤷
Matteo (mob boss, owns sex club) wants to control all of the sex, drugs, and rock-n-roll in the area. Heaven (daughter of mob boss, underboss) has a dickhead brother who shoots a rival's second lieutenant, and that bad guy is after revenge. Some stuff that doesn't make sense happens and Matteo tells her dad that he'll protect their family if he gets to marry Heaven. She doesn't agree, but then again - sexual chemistry. Matteo really wants to kill the whole family and take control. Then Matty and Heaven have some hot sex and they "fall in love". Marriage, betrayal, murder, retaliation, etc. happens. Personally, I wasn't happy with some of the people who got to live in this fic. I thought it would have been much better if the author had killed off a few folks.
The sex is pretty hot. Not nearly enough of it for me, though. You'll be happy to know there are no condoms. Yay!!!
So, even though Matteo and Heaven end up together in the end, their relationship still seems kind of iffy. I just didn't feel like they were solid. Then, Matteo gets a phone call at the end and there's someone threatening to come after him and Heaven and both of their families. Then for the epilogue, it's Sergio's POV (Matteo's brother).
Doesn't that scream that this isn't a standalone?? I didn't like this enough to continue the series.
Mateo is an up-and-coming Italian underboss that has been making a name for himself in New York. His actions make more noise than his actual word and when he makes a move, everyone knows it was him, no questions asked. When Declan Mulligan- the head of the Irish Mafia comes to him for help, Mateo knows he’s hit the jackpot!
Heaven knew right from the beginning that she had to show that she had a backbone and would not let her brother Conor take the reins in the family business and have her future set-in flames. So, she does what one shouldn’t when it comes to having anything to do with a powerful underboss, she spies on him in his own territory to see whom she is up against. She didn’t realize that it was all planned and that she’s about to get burned.
The chemistry between Mateo & Heaven is instantaneous and I knew we would be in for a spectacular ride on who would be victorious over who. Be ready for those scenes in his Club because they get your blood pumping. Their love hate for each other was amusing but at times I didn’t know who I was rooting for. Would Heaven be able to survive and show all the men, especially Mateo, that she can handle herself or would she allow them to walk all over her? You’ll have to click to find out! Kara~ 5 Thrilling Stars
Mateo’s word describing Heaven were spot on: “She’s brutal, unforgiving, and ruthless, qualities I loved even though I knew they’d be directed at me.”
Man, this sounded so good when I ran across a snippet from it. It was very misleading sadly. I tried to give it a chance but it's just not interesting.
The heroine Heaven should be a character I liked because shes an actual underboss (well co-underboss with her shithead brother) and seems like a bit of a badass from what I read. However...I couldn't stand her. The more the book went on the more my impression of her formed and I just didn't like her. My "I'm done" moment was her reaction to being told about the marriage arrangement to the hero Matteo. Good grief this grown woman threw a hissy fit. Hands flying in the air, actual screaming and God the disrespect! I've read many Mafia books and the way she spoke to her father...being angry and upset was no excuse to go on a tirade of that magnitude. ESPECIALLY the disrespect she threw at Matteo. THAT didn't work for me. As a supposed underboss this chick should understand the politics of tip toeing that line of respect/disrespect and rudeness. But she didn't. She just flew off the handle like a sixteen year old being grounded and having her cell phone taken away. I was embarrassed for her.
And the hero Matteo didn't impress me much either tbh. He let her disrespect happen without saying much of anything aside from a few remarks about the names/insults she called him (Guido, The Italian, Wop) and I found that just uncalled for. Regardless of their one meet the night before she had no reason to treat him so poorly especially when she was aware of his status of power in his own right so as an intelligent woman and again an UNDERBOSS she should be toeing that line and layering her politeness with barbs that don't cause blatant disrespect.
I was not feeling the kind of mafia the author was writing. It didn't feel authentic at all.
I really wanted this to work out but I just kept rolling my eyes at it. Nothing picked up as far as the plot other than obscure mentions of past crap they (the heroine & hero) were responsible for and seemingly trying to atone for.
And personally the author needs to figure out that you absolutely DO NOT! Need! So many! Explanation! Marks! They were everywhere. It got to be ridiculous.
This is a novel that I am sure will appeal to a lot of people - especially people who enjoy more erotica with their mafia stories.
That person however is not me.
When I read the synopsis for this one, I expected much more than what I got. And maybe that was my downfall as the two leads meeting in a kink club (and what happened from there) just... bored me. I felt no connection to them, no strength in their characters (or in their ability to be head of a mafia family). And while I enjoyed the fact that consent played a huge role in their first meeting, I didn't buy into their chemistry or their connection. I would have liked to have seen their romance develop a bit slower and in a more believable way.
Another thing I would have liked to see was a more present feeling of suspense or danger from this so-called threat looming over them. I never felt that their marriage for "protection" was needed.
However, I was interested in some of the background characters so if they should get their own stories in the future I may give this author a second chance.
DISCLAIMER: I received a complimentary copy of this novel from the publisher. This has not affected my review in any way. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are 100% my own.
" An arranged marriage, mafia story filled with lies, betrayal, suspense, retribution, more betrayal, a shift in loyalty, I could keep going and going. Long story short, this book keeps you on edge, it keeps you wondering until the end. The characters are strong, kind of kindred without knowing it at first, both very bada$$. I can definitely see them being solid and capable leaders of the family. I can't wait for the next brother's story!"
If you had to choose between power and love, what would you choose? Seems like a relatively easy question. That's until you are actually put into the scenario, then your answer may change. Matteo Villani would have chosen power and control without a second thought and faster than you could blink. That was before Heaven Mulligan. She changed everything.
It all started with an arranged marriage in the mafia. The enemies to lovers trope that we all adore, and when written right, it never disappoints. This book definitely did not disappoint. We meet Italian Mafia, Matteo, and Irish Mafia co-underboss, Heaven. This book had me laughing and smiling one minute then yelling at the characters the next. I fell absolutely in love with not just Matty, but all the Villani brothers. 'Savage Ruler' is book one in the Sinfully Savage Series by Kristen Luciani. It's filled with action, deceit, lies, betrayal, humor, suspense, and delicious steamy scenes. Both main characters had secrets and trauma from their past that affected their need for control and power in the present. Control is what everyone chases after but only some succeed in catching it while others get killed in the chase. Which side of the blade do you think Matteo and Heaven would be on?
We get to read the beautifully written banter between a gorgeous, witty, defiant, fiery redhead mafia princess and an alpha asshole who's a ruthless, cold, and calculated Dom and mob boss. The chemistry between the two was unmatched and impossible to ignore. It was a match made in heaven...or hell. Two Savage Rulers, kindred spirits destined to be together, no matter how much they tried to fight it.
My love for Heaven sometimes faltered but never for Matteo. I understand that Heaven has a lot to put up with being the only female among egotistical dicks but come on. She was quite frustrating at certain moments. One minute she was this strong badass bitch no one should mess with and then in the blink of an eye, she turned into this 'weak' damsel in distress. The Heaven at the end of the book is the badass bitch I wanted to see more of. I mean, who doesn't love a lady that can handle herself with just a knife amongst armed men with guns. Using a gun requires aim and all that but you need a certain level of skill and precision to yield a blade, and Heaven definitely had it.
I expected more BDSM considering that Matteo owned a BDSM sex club but the author still delivered with those hot and steamy scenes that left you in need of water. One other thing about this book was the fact that the transition from lust to love was too fast. They said they loved each other but I felt as if it needed to be shown some more. After all, actions speak louder than words. Overall, 'Savage Ruler' is an addictive, all-consuming page-turner that you won't want to put down.
Heaven and Matteo - I loved the book but it was clichè! Heaven doesn’t sound powerful, more continually complaining about her father and brother and being a woman. She really only comes to in the last 10% of the book. The brother is an absolute loser and I was hoping he’d get killed off half way through the book. Mateo was the best part of the book. He obviously was in love with heaven from the beginning and never would have double crossed her when it came to it. Good book and over all would recommend.
This was a good read. Heaven's brother did something stupid and now they are after them. Mateo makes a deal with her family and that he is is to marry Heaven. Of course she is mad at first but by the end she is in love with him. Too bad they have to deal with some betrayals before they can get their happy ending.
I seriously FLOVED these two and sexual compatibility omg off the charts steamy!!!! I did deduct a half star because the end was too quick and although it’s leading into the next book I wished a little more in these two love birds lol!!!!!
Savage Ruler by Kristen Luciani is a mafia /arranged marriage romance that's intense, captivating, complex, dark, angsty, hot, rift with secrets and betrayals, manipulations, steamy chemistry and changing loyalties. This is Matteo and Heaven's story. There are twists and turns that keep you glued from start to finish. No cliffhanger which is good. Great characters, fast paced and engaging, mafia storyline. I hope there's a book 2 and soon!
Savage Ruler is book one in the Sinfully Savage series. I love mafia stories and at this stage my expectations are high so I’m delighted that this story exceeded my expectations.
Matteo and Heaven- crikey these two certainly pulled me through so many emotions while reading this story. I was so absorbed in these characters that I ignored the world around me easily.
I am really looking forward to reading more from this author and this world. In the meantime I’ll be catching up on her previous books as this was oh so good.
So So Good. A gripping Mafia story that has it all. Fiesty heroine, Dominate hero, an arranged marriage, family drama, deadly enemies and Sexy encounters. The passion between Matteo and Heaven is Intense! SUPER HOT ❤️🔥❤️ Love their HAE! I'm hoping to see more of them in future books.
Way too much word filler. Like come on and get to the point of what ever is happening. And why don't they travel with or have body guards to watch their backs? stopped at 51%
Savage Ruler is my first Kristen Luciani book but it will not be my last! She absolutely blew me away with this arranged marriage, mafia book. Savage Ruler is a must read!
I love a good villain, anti-hero and that's what Matteo is. He was dark, delicious, savage, and everything I love. Haven was no pushover of a heroine. She knew she wouldn't make it if she didn't have a backbone and show it. her problem though she didn't realize she was being played. Her moves were guessed and it seemed she was a step behind.
Matteo and Haven's chemistry was undeniable and amazing. Reading the book I just knew they were going to be explosive and I was right. There's a thin line between love and hate and these two walked it. I also think love and hate go hand in hand, you can't have one without the other and these two prove it. There relationship was so much fun to read.
Lies, secrets, betrayal, suspense and unexpected love fill Savage Ruler. Luciani packed this book full of the perfect amount of everything. I was on the edge of my seat reading and needing more. Each page left me needing more and yet not wanting it to end.
Kristen Luciani did a phenomenal job with this Mafia romance. Her words sucked me right in. Her characters were amazing and her plot fantastic. Savage Ruler has left me dying to go back and see what else Luciani has written.
Savage Ruler by Kristen Luciani is an enemies to lovers arranged marriage mafia romance that I listened to on audio narrated by Sarah Puckett and Tor Thom. This is the first book in the Sinfully Savage series and can be read as a standalone.
This is the first book of Kristen's that I have read, and it definitely won't be my last. I was pulled in from the first chapter and couldn't wait to see what was going to happen next. I really enjoyed the relationship between Mateo and Heaven. It was messy but you couldn't help but root for them. I loved that we got both of their points of views throughout the book. It really brought the story to life.
I can't wait for the next book in the series Savage Liar to be released on audio so I can get Sergio and Jaelyn's story.
Sarah and Tor did an amazing job on the narration. They both really know how to bring a story to life. I look forward to listening to more of their work in the future.
I would recommend this book if you like enemies to lovers romances, arranged marriage romances, mafia romances, or romantic suspense.
This is book 1 of the Sinfully Savage mafia series, and my fourth mafia series by this author. It did not disappoint!
A marriage is arranged for Heaven and Matteo, which he (Matteo) orchestrates for his own agenda. Heaven is blindsided by the arrangement and furious with him as well as her family.
Heaven is one of the strongest female characters I’ve read in awhile, and it was refreshing to see her charge her way through a world that is typically male dominated.
I enjoyed the relationship that developed between Matteo and Heaven, which surprised both of them. There was banter, there was fighting, and plenty of heat 🔥🔥.
Twists and turns to the very end kept me guessing and I enjoyed that aspect of the book. Looking forward to starting Savage Liar, which is Sergio’s story.
Not exactly what I like in mafia books. I love a bad ass heroine but this one had moments of TSTL ie when out running with her brother. Or when she confronts her wasted co-underboss brother on her own. Or right at the beginning when she wants to scope out the hero but only manages to be dumb.
The hero comes across as having all his shit under control and yet is surprised by the cartel boss in his own premises...twice!
Then the writing!!!!!! It’s like Kramer from Seinfeld had a chance to edit this and wanted exclamation points everywhere
Anyway I don’t think I’ll read anymore of this series even if future books would give me closure on the family of the heroine who basically backstab her.🙃
This is the first in a new series and what an awesome beginning this story is. Mateo is a dark and controlling underboss for the Italian mafia, and when the family of the Irish mafia become a target for a dangerous drug cartel, it is arranged for him to marry Heaven who is a mafia princess, to protect her. This is a well written story which is filled with suspense, action, drama, secrets, lies, betrayal, twists, retribution, loyalty, family dynamics, witty banter, love, and this all leads to a steamy and all-consuming read. I was hooked throughout this riveting and addictive page turner, and I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I recommend.
Heaven believed that she had much more to offer her Irish mafia family than an arranged marriage to the Italian mob but with her family in trouble that becomes her fate. She will be the perfect wife in public but since this is more merger than marriage the same doesn’t apply in private.
Matteo is a powerful man in the Italian mob who has agreed to marry Heaven as it will make both their families stronger. He expected the heat between them but the feelings she incited in him were not only unexpected but inconvenient as well.
Intrigue, surprises and heat as Heaven and Matteo fight for their families and each other
OMG I LOVED THIS BOOK SM!! Heaven is just wow! I love empowered woman and she is the definition of badass! Mateo? Yeah he did some pretty fuked up shit but he ended up loving her. He's amazing and did I mention hot?! Yeah he IS SOO FUCKING HOT! Loved the ending too <33 Makes me wanna go see the Ostracod bioluminescence. Freaking love this author!! Can't wait to read the following books of this series.
Mateo and Heaven are fire and I am hooked on the series and this author now. Their chemistry and spark is explosive and the story moves on from there. The suspense, mystery, danger, and the added kink just kept me reading the whole way through.
