The story of a young modern Siamese girl and her quest for true love. Prisna takes place in 1938 in Phra Nakhon, Thailand, during a time when men and women were not equals. Marriage for women meant security, not love. Prissana is the youngest daughter among four girls and was the only one raised in America by their uncle. She is outgoing, cheerful, and pretty, but at the same time, she is also headstrong, intelligent, and opinionated. She returns to Thailand after living in America for 12 years and is once again reunited with her family. Prissana, whose name means “mystery, a puzzle/riddle,” causes quite a stir in Thailand with her open, American behavior and refreshing beauty. She develops a dislike toward Taan Chai Puthpreecha, whom she has never met, because everyone puts him on a pedestal. Over the course of time, both end up having to reevaluate their presumptions of each other as they get to know one another better.
In Volume 2, the story continues from where it ended with Prisna presented with an opportunity to take a different path in her life. The storyline this time however, is not focused solely on Prisna, or her love life. Of course there is courtship and romance which is very tastefully and believably done. But this time the developments in her sisters’ lives are also included into the story. Each one of her family members faces some form of emotional turmoil and throughout all these situations, the author successfully shows that it is the strength of their individual characters and their love for each other that pulls them through.
While reading this book, I sometimes forget that it was written when Princess Vibhavadi was in her 20s. The plot, characterisation was great and the flow and pace was smooth making it quite an enjoyable and engrossing read. Added to that are the minor characters who each has a role to play and add value to the story.
Overall this was a wonderful story. Not just a love story between a beautiful young woman and her handsome prince, but also a story of a family of strong and respectable women who has managed to live a meaningful life despite the odds.
