Clean Skin from within: Das Spa-Doktor-2-Wochen-Programm für strahlende, natürlich jugendliche Haut
Get the clear skin you've always wanted with simple changes to your diet and lifestyle.
Many people suffer from skin conditions -- acne, rosacea, eczema, psoriasis -- and seek conventional medical help but don't get the results they hope for. Other people end up worse than when they started, after being prescribed antibiotic after antibiotic. And then there are those who don't realize how good their skin can be until they adopt a cleaner, healthier lifestyle.
In Clean Skin from Within, Dr. Trevor Cates presents guidelines and recipes to transform your skin from the inside out.
“Your skin is similar to a magic mirror—offering clues about your internal health. When you look at your skin in the bathroom mirror, what do you see? Your first instinct may be to mask redness, bumps, fine lines, and discolorations with makeup. But have you ever thought about why your skin contains blemishes in the first place? Checking for the hints your skin provides to figure out the “why” is what this magic-mirror concept is all about.” ~ Dr. Cates
With this book, you can:
- Determine your skin type and better understand its root causes
- Achieve a clean mind, a clean plate, and a clean body
- Nourish your body and your skin with recipes for collagen-boosting bone broths, antioxidant-rich salads, and delicious smoothies
- Whip up all-natural cleansers, toners, exfoliants, and masks
At the end of two weeks, both your skin and your soul will be polished, perfect, and ready to glow.

Cut out the crap. Eat lots of veggies, “clean meat”, some beans and fruit. Does that sum it up?! She does have interesting information about the skin side and it includes recipes so that’s a bonus. I think some people might love this book but I have read tons of health books so the information wasn’t exciting for me.

If you have interest in treating typical skin issues—acne, eczema, and even wrinkles—naturally, this is interesting to explore. You will not only likely see improvements to your skin, but also to your overall health and well-being, as you clean up all of the elements of your life. This book is well written, straight forward, easy to read and simple in its approach.

The first 110 and some pages are purely informational.
The next 60 pages or so are food recipes.
The final 30 pages or so are skin care recipes.
The information section: I read a lot of natural health books. So, finding out that inflammation and our diet are the main causes of most of our health problems was not groundbreaking for me. But getting this gentle reminder is appreciated. I love that Dr. Cates breaks down different types of problem skin into four groups. I am of the “flushed red face” group. No, she does not call it that. And, yes, yes I am of Irish descent. So, every page I read, after finding out which group I am in, breaks out the information provided by group. That is super helpful. Certain information may not apply to me, Mrs. Red Face. Also, certain recipes will not help my skin.
Dr. Cates touches on diet a lot, as you would expect. From recommended amount of the good food, to the limitations we should implement for the not-so-great foods.
For those of you who like to have a plan, spelled out for them, Dr. Cates provides a two-week plan. I am not one of those people. I enjoy flexibility.
The food recipe portion: I have a veritable truck-load of cookbooks. The majority have smoothie recipes. I was shocked to find a couple that interested me. Usually, I gloss right over them because I have seen it all already. So, pleasant surprise! The same can be said for salads. I was surprised to see a couple fresh/new, to me, salads!
There were several main course recipes, meat-centric, that I can easily alter to make vegan. Another pleasant surprise. The Quinoa Fritters with Pork Chops I will change to Quinoa Fritters and Pumfu “Chops” (Pumfu is a non-soy version of Tofu which I do not eat). But don’t get me wrong. I will still Peter Brady the heck out of “pork chops” 😉 IYKYK…
Finally, the skin care recipe section: I think this section of the book has as many page tabs as the first two. I was not expecting that. I have a few options for cleansers, toners, exfoliants, masks, body scrubs and even two recipes for baths. I just know I’ll be using one of these in the very near future! Yes, I will have a glass of wine and a book to enjoy with me.
I am quite pleased with this book.

This books was written for people who are ready to do whatever it takes for clear skin. The tone is great, and the food ideology closely resembles my own at this time. I personally am not super interested in the DIY skincare, but would have been at a different time in my life (priorities). I read this book out of curiosity, my skin is mostly great anyway. I did start taking a lysine supplement while reading, and that may be making a difference in my hormonal acne, we’ll see. As always, it’s hard for me to have perfect recommendations as someone who has been breastfeeding or pregnant for almost all of the last 11 years, and no breaks in over 8 years.
Anyway, with those who don’t know where to start with their skin, this may be a good book to go to - as long as they’re all-in with her plan.

The book introduces 4 core components that each individual needs to have to get "clean skin": clean plate, clean slate, clean body and clean mind. And there are 6 main underlying causes of skin issues: inflammation, microbiome disturbance, oxidative damage, blood sugar issues, nutritional deficiencies and hormonal imbalances.
The clean plate chapter is the most useful for me personally since it goes through a list of the different foods that could be beneficial to making our skin better, and also foods that could potentially triggering for some people.
The clean slate chapter talks about potential toxins lurking in our skin care products, and how we can try to use natural alternatives. I'm fully aware that natural doesn't always mean better, and the dose makes the poison, so I would read this chapter with a whole jar of salt.

I definitely agree with the basic idea here--nutrient dense eating and eliminating toxins is essential for good skin. Cates does offer a lot of great information regarding what nutrients, supplements, and foods help with different skin conditions. That being said, it's overwhelming in terms of supplements and the DIY beauty recipes... there's no help regarding how or what to prioritize in the endless suggestions she makes. I wish the approach were simpler, more streamlined.

Found some pieces of new information, but most of this was information that I already knew. She is right about fixing skin issues with the gut, but it will take more than 2 weeks to do this. The book contains recipes for food and natural products to use on the skin. I liked the science behind this, and it was a quick read.

Good! Good info, but many of the food options are quite unrealistic (even for a healthy eater like me). I love the diy skin stuff. A lot of unrecognizable ingredients though - natural, just might be hard to find or possibly expensive.

I gave it 3 stars because I’ve been following a diet through functional medicine, and a lot of this I just already knew. I was a little disappointed there wasn’t more recipes, and the ones she provided I thought were high sugar.

This book was a great source of basic information about what to eat, what to use and how to make it work together. There are also some recipes in this publication. Could be useful if you want to increase the intake of healthy food.

It is packed with insightful information. The information is also effective for overall health, not just clean skin. I appreciate the fact that the author is not just marketing their product but also providing tips on making your own.

Solid information. I wish there were more recipes.

I really enjoy the knowledge I gained from this book, but wish the personalized approach was more detailed.

Great information. The author looks at the whole person and not just one aspect of your life in order to get clear skin

This book is so great! As a skincare junkie, I wasn't expecting too much new information, but I am pleasantly surprised! I learned a lot about which foods to include and exclude as well as ingredient information. Really well written and just the right amount of information!
