Anna Braverman comes from a long line of intelligence agents, but her late father insisted she follow a different path and become an accountant. When an urgent summons arrives from her only living relative, Uncle Ezra, Anna drops everything to meet him in a café on the outskirts of Reykjavík, Iceland. Uncle Ezra sweeps her into a decades-old mystery as he explains that her great-grandfather, a famous Jewish artist, was accused of being a Nazi sympathizer. He wants Anna to help him disprove the lie and expose the truth. But they can trust no one. Any skepticism Anna may have harbored disappears when her uncle is shot. Barely alive, he utters one final word: “Run.”
Though he met Ezra only briefly, journalist Kristofer Tómasson knows the information the old man passed on to his niece is likely the reason he was murdered. Now his niece’s life is also in peril. Despite the danger, Kristofer approaches Anna with an offer to help in exchange for an exclusive story. United by a common goal, as well as an undeniable spark of attraction, Anna and Kristofer race to uncover the mysteries of the past—that is, if they survive.

The story begins during World War II. A young Jewish family makes an attempt to flee Denmark to escape the Nazis.
Fast forward to the present day. The grandchildren and great-grandaughter are trying to uncover the mystery of the disappearance of their ancestors. There are those who wish to keep the secrets buried.
This begins a story filled with suspense. I was kept invested emotionally and intellectually. I found it fascinating. There were tidbits of history that were new to me. I knew about the Jewish in Germany and a few of the surrounding countries. It never occurred to me that it Denmark was one of them. I am grateful that Kathi Oram Peterson did her research and made me a better informed reader in the process.
Suspense, family secrets, long lost relatives, political intrigue, romance, and espionage are all neatly bundled in one book. It didn't take me long to fly through the pages, mainly because I didn't want to put it down.

I love a good suspenseful read. And I really enjoy learning about History while reading as well. This book combined my love of reading and suspense. It was an edge of your seat ride the whole time. I wasn't able to read a lot at a time so not only was I feeling the angst while reading, but I felt it for several days wondering what was going to happen next as the book stretched on, in between my reading time. It was well worth the time spent.
I enjoyed the mystery as well as Anna, her uncle Ezra and Kristofer are trying to unravel what happened to Anna's great-grandfather during WWII. He was a famous Jewish painter who disappeared without a trace and was accused of supporting the Nazis. When a tragedy strikes, Anna is left to run and put all of her knowledge and skills to use to figure out this mystery. Not knowing whom she should trust and being in a foreign country leaves her in a real conundrum. Not to mention, she's a wanted person.
Clear your schedule so you can read this with fewer interruptions than I had. Trust me, you'll want to because you need to figure it all out. Who are all these people who keep showing up in Anna's path and are the clues she's following really going to help her or just lead her on more of a wild goose chase?
The historical aspects of the book were very interesting. It was fun finding out more about the people who lived in Iceland and Denmark during WWII. I always loved the book, Number the Stars, when I was younger and reading about the Jews in Denmark during this time. I had several moments where I thought of that book while enjoying this one.
Content: Some moments of peril. Some death and some talk about war and concentration camps, the Holocaust. Nothing overly graphic.
I received a copy from the publisher, Covenant Communications, via NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions in the review are my own.
I love a good suspense/mystery and when the author can include historical facts it's even better. This is book is one of those which made it even more interesting to me. The story begins with a prologue in Denmark as the Jews receive word that they must evacuate before the Gestapo arrives. Fast forward to the present day when Anna meets her uncle Ezra at a cafe in Iceland. Before he can tell her why he needed to meet with her he's killed as they sit at their table eating. The last thing he tells Anna is "Run!", so she does. Thankfully her father had taught her lessons on spy craft and she's able to use them to find uncle Eza's safehouse. There she meets with journalist Kristofer Tómasson who offers to help her in exchange for an exclusive story. They must work together to find and bring to light the information that got her uncle killed.
I loved how brave Anna and Kristofer were, and also those who helped them in their quest to uncover and expose the truth. Of course I loved how the truth about her great-grandparents was brought to light in the end. I like when authors do their research and I learn things while reading an awesome story. This book is a great example of that. I learned things I hadn't known before, such as the Danish Jews and how a lot of them were able to avoid being captured.
This story will keep you up reading and on the edge of your seat. There are also multiple twists that will take you by surprise. It's a thrilling journey through Iceland and Denmark so hold on tight.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher. All thoughts and opinions expressed in this review are my own.
It is my least favorite thing to write a negative review, especially when it's an author who I generally want to support. I've been struggling to read this over several days when I would normally read a book like this in one to two days at most. I felt like this story had so much going for it and, overall, had an intriguing plot. However, I felt it needed a lot more development. There were so many plot holes and things that didn't work for me and I had to suspend belief too much. There were also dialogue and relationship issues between the heroine and a certain journalist. Like who thinks "the size of his manly hands?" There were other lines like that which felt off to me. Who thinks or says things like this? Then "Though in truth I did blame him for Uncle's death..." which didn't make any sense to me as this uncle worked as a secret agent and decided to continue to research something that someone killed him to keep secret. I don't know how it would be the journalist's fault the uncle died just because he interviewed him (and not against the uncle's will). I think I like my characters a bit more rational, for them to make at least somewhat logical assumptions and be consistent. I like my stories and the plot to make sense, and although this plot had so much promise, the execution was lacking for me, enough that it couldn't even hold my interest. I have read other books by this author that I enjoyed and will give her a try again, but this one was a DNF for me.
I've read many books by this author and this one is so unique in many ways. The historical aspect alone was interesting and thrilling. It starts during WWII and then switches to modern-day. It takes place in Iceland and Denmark. This is a part of WWII history I've never studied about. The main character Anna is Jewish and she's looking for the truth about what happened to her Great-Grandparents during the Holocaust. There is so much action and huge waves of suspense in this book. Poor Anna is never sure who to trust from one minute to the next. As she gathers clues, the mystery broadens even more. Let's just say that Treacherous Legacy is truly intense! Some of the twists and turns will leave you reeling in shock. I know I gasped out loud several times while reading. Anna's family legacy was a lot more complicated than she'd imagined.
This novel has colorful characters from bold journalist Kristofer Tómasson, to the mysterious spy Samara, and also the gruff little old lady, Unn, who captained her own boat. I loved the details the author wrote that brought to life Iceland and Denmark for me. This novel is rich in historical details that made reading this book not only entertaining but very interesting too.
This book is recommended to readers that love a good murder mystery, historical intrigue, and the journey of unexpected romance.
I am a big fan of how Kathi Oram Peterson writes her suspense books. I love the way this one weaved a family history mystery with danger and even a bit of love. The author did such a great job with this one. I didn’t want to stop reading it. I finished it so fast!
Anna is the heroine. She witnesses her uncle’s murder in Iceland in the very first chapter. He tells her to run, so she does. I love the way she was able to know what to do to be safe. Her father had taught her to always have a way out. And many other great lessons that she uses to keep herself safe. And then she runs into Kristofer, so she isn’t alone any more. Anna’s is the main point of view throughout the story.
Kristofer is such a helpful guy. I liked how he went followed Anna, trying to help her, at great danger to himself and his family. He knew things about Anna’s uncle and father that she didn’t even know. And between the two of them and one of her uncle’s friends that happens to find them, they are able to figure out the mystery and stay one step ahead of the bad guys.
The plot of this one kept me interested from the very start. I loved everything about it!
I was sent an e-copy of Treacherous Legacy as a gift from the publisher. All opinions are my own.
Great suspense novel that had me on the edge of my seat from the first page. I loved how the characters worked together in order to bring the truth to light. I also loved learning about what the Jews went through in Denmark during the Holocaust. I thought it was interesting about the miracle of how so many were able to get out of Denmark. I also like that this book had a little bit of romance but it was more about finding the truth and bring that truth to light. I really enjoyed this book.
I received a complimentary book from publishers, publicists, and or authors. A review was not required and all opinions and ideas expressed are my own.
Wow, wow, and another WOW! I cannot believe the twists, turns, and rollercoaster ride that Peterson took me on. I am still reeling from all that Anna went through on her journey throughout the book. Late in the night while I was reading I was just in shock! Peterson shocked me with her curve balls. Plural because there were multiple. This was a wild and crazy ride, hold on to your hat because you will not believe what happens. I loved the history that Peterson included about WWII and the Holocaust, it made the book come alive for me. Especially with the mystery surrounding Anna's great grandparents. This is a romantic suspense novel that you will never want to put down! I received a copy of this book for free; all thoughts and opinions are my own.
I am a hopeless romantic and typically read regency romance, but I have been branching out lately. I do love historical novels and WWII has always interested me. This is the first book I have read by this author. I found the book to be an interesting story, the mystery of what really happened to Anna’s great grandparents was the premise of the book, but so much more unraveled as she was suddenly found right in the middle of a murder. The story has many different twists and turns, each one connecting to the other. I gave this review 4 stars because I thought it was a little predictable. It was still a captivating read. The characters and history are well researched. It is a full of intrigue, suspense and of course righting the wrongdoings of the period of history. The romance is also sweet. Thor meets Wonder Women!
This was an action packed book right from the get go. I learned some things , which is always a plus for me. Parts of it were pretty fantastic, but it’s fiction, so I could overlook that. It was probably going to be a 5 star book up until the end. I thought the end was unnecessarily sad. ☹️
Ms. Peterson has created historical fiction at its best. With roots in the middle of WW II, Treacherous Legacy explores the life of two people who seek to discover the true story behind a man who had long been labeled a German spy. The story takes them from Iceland to Denmark and back to Iceland - including opportunities to meet the Queen of Denmark in her palace and to visit the relatively famous Hallgrimskirkja Church in Reykjavík, Iceland. The story is both tense and sad at times, but was well worth the time I spent reading it.
At times the writing seemed a bit awkward - as if written by an inexperienced writer writing in the first person. That was balanced by three characteristics that made the book stand out.
First was the inclusion of historical and geographical references that forced me to turn to Google for additional information - a feature that I appreciate when reading historical fiction.
The second characteristic that I appreciated was the use of brief Icelandic, German, and Danish, phrases by the story’s characters. These were easily translated using Kindle’s built-in translator. I discovered that the author had also included interpretations for many (all?) of these in the back of the book, though I did not discover this until I finished reading the book. It might have been more useful to include this “dictionary” near the front allowing the reader to use it as the book is being read.
Finally, the book includes a three-page essay in which she discusses the historicity of the book. She discusses a wide range of topics including the use of wireless technology by the Danish Resistance during WW II and the presence of eighty-nine-year-old women who are actively going to sea and traveling between Iceland and Denmark even today. Not only is each question clearly answered with a “yes” or “no”, but she also includes sources for her conclusions. This final essay is interesting in its own right.
I give the book 4-½ stars. ______________ This review is based on a free electronic copy provided by the publisher for the purpose of creating this review. The opinions are mine alone.
Going into the story I wasn’t sure how I felt about it and now finished I’m still not sure. The author details fact from fiction in author notes at the end, which help put the story in perspective. I realize again how much I don’t know about many things in the world around me. The opening of the story takes us right into the past and the Danish occupation by the Nazi forces. Then we quickly meet the modern descendants of the family in World War II. There is fairly nonstop action and suspense in the beginning with Anna, Kristof and Samara. Once we leave Denmark everything slows down as secrets are revealed that directly affect Anna’s life. Then the suspense kicks in again for a race to the finish in finding out what truly happened back in World War II. I appreciate the author giving the reader a bit more closure than just the reveal of the truth. Quite often I avoid heavy topics but I’m glad I took a chance on reading this book. It reminds me how important lessons from the past are for us to remember and say never again. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the opportunity to review this book prior to publication.
Such an interesting and suspenseful read! Anna's family has been trying to uncover the truth about what happened to their ancestors during WWII but someone will go to great lengths to keep the truth hidden. The historical aspect was fascinating as I didn't know much about the fate of the Danish Jews during the Holocaust.
The suspense starts right from the beginning and just gets more intense as the book goes. There were lots of plot twists that kept the story moving even if some of them were a little predictable. Overall, an enjoyable suspense with a taste of clean romance! Definitely recommend!
I received a complimentary copy of this book but was not required to leave a positive review.
I love stories that include information about WWII and mysteries. This one had both. It was fascinating to watch this mystery unravel and find the clues that were laid out through history.
In this story, Kathi Oram Peterson takes us on a journey through Iceland and Denmark and the treatment of the Jewish people in that area. The clues have been left for the daughter of a Mossad agent to figure out with the help of a reporter. Throughout their journey they have to figure out who to trust and how best to solve the mystery left to her by her uncle.
Anna and Kristofer work together to unravel the mystery because if they don't, it could mean both their lives. The suspense is palpable and the reveals were perfection. This story was masterfully crafted and I would believe that it was a true story. I was drawn in quickly and couldn't put it down.
I received an early copy from the publisher and this is my honest review.
I cringed when I read the word "Nazis" in the first chapter. How many more books that tackle World War 2 can really be written? My worries were unfounded. This one was SO original. The basis for the book is on one family's history starting with the war and leading into what roles that followed after the Holocaust. But the story expands to include the choices that others made as well.
I loved the focus on Jews after the war even more than the 1940s setting. Although there was one flashback scene, for the most part this book focused on the impacts of history in modern day. I have not read many books set in northern Europe - that made the story even more interesting. Anna agrees to fly to Iceland to meet her uncle. Little does she know that their supper was going to change her life. The rest of the book is about her quest to solve a family mystery. Part of the story also takes place in Denmark.
This is a strong suspense book that includes intrigue. There was an obvious part of the story that I did figure out. But there were many other parts that I did not see coming. Once you get into the storyline, you will probably keep reading until it is done as it does keep you guessing.
What caused me to love this book even more was the extensive research that the author did in preparation for writing this book. At the end, she talks about all of the parts that were true, all of the parts that were based on facts, and all of the parts that were fiction. Her efforts made the story ring true even though parts of it never happened. There is also a translation guide since she incorporates different countries into the tale.
I knew very little about the Mossad before reading this book. I enjoyed learning about how these brave men and women protect Jews around the world to make sure that another Holocaust never happens again. A new part of history to life was brought to life for me.
I definitely recommend this book. And I am sure that I will read more books by this author. Glad I could read this book through NetGalley. This review is my idea. All opinions are my own.
4.5 stars a fast paced and intriguing romantic suspense novel! I really enjoyed Treacherous Legacy particularly how it took place in a location (Iceland and Denmark) I don't often read about. Anna Braverman's great-grandparents disappeared during WWII with rumors surrounding their disappearance and loyalty as Danish Jews and part of the Danish Resistance. Her father and uncle spent their lives trying to discover the answers of their family history only for Anna to witness her uncle's murder and be forced to pick up where they left off solving the mystery. This book had so much intriguing history and references to the plight of the Jewish people in Denmark and Iceland during WWII. I found the history and modern counterparts really interesting, especially how the past played into what was happening for Anna in the present day. There were many twists and turns in this story that I did not see coming. I enjoyed the romantic side plot line as well, though I did want just a little bit more. The author provided some great romantic tension and swoony moments, so the romance was believable in the end even if it was not the main focus of the story. I received an advance reader copy of this novel. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I definitely enjoyed this and highly recommend it to fans of the genre.
*The ARC was provided by NetGalley for an honest review*
My Rating - 3.25/5
Anna met her uncle who wanted to find the truth about Anna's great-grandparents, Joseph and Hadassah who were considered as traitors among the Jews as people believed they betrayed their people by helping the Nazis. Then suddenly her uncle got killed in front of her. Kristofer who witnessed the whole scene wanted to help her. He was a journalist and interviewed Anna's uncle as he was trying to find out about one of his close friend, Jordan who was involved in the mess of Anna's family. While they're hiding in the safehouse, a woman showed up searching for Anna's uncle. The three of them started their journey of finding the truth. Their lives were at stake. Secrets started to get revealed one by one. People ended up dead. But Anna with the help of the other two finally cleaned her family name. Also, both Anna and Kristofer fell in love with each other at the end.
I was so frustrated at Anna's stupidity sometimes. I faced some problems with the other language(s) and the Mossad groups. But I ended up liking it anyway. Not much unpredictable per say, but definitely a page turner. You can give it a try. I didn't mind the lack of romance aspect.
A family legacy of unanswered questions and danger A family with a history of questions. What had happened to parents, grandparents and even great grandparents? Were the rumors of great grandfather being a traitor true as the world seemed to feel or was the family version of him not helping the Nazis but simply vanishing true? And if the family version is true, what happened to him and his wife? When Anna is summoned to meet with her uncle, Ezra, these are the questions facing her. Ezra has been searching for answers for years along with Anna’s father, who is now dead and now he wants Anna’s help. As their meeting in the restaurant progresses Ezra is dies in front of Anna. Anna now must decide if she will pursue the search for truth, that may put her in danger or ignore it. As she moves forward, she finds her life full of unexpected twists and turns, shocks and surprises, and help where it was not expected. A truly engrossing book. I was given a free copy in exchange for an honest review.
I'm usually not a fan of suspense, but this one was intense and kept me reading. The story takes place mostly in Iceland. Anna Braverman, comes to Iceland, to meet with her Uncle Ezra, who is a Massad agent. Anna ends up running for her life, when her uncle is killed right in front of her. Kristoffer Tomasson, a reporter comes to her aid. Anna's family is Jewish, Anna has heard the story of her great grandparents since she was young. She has always believed them, to be spies of the Nazi's, but Anna's father and uncle have always insisted they were not spies. With the death of both her father and uncle, Anna is determined to carry on in her search to find out the truth of what happened. This story is fast paced, the author had to have spent quite a while researching, to write such a compelling book. I don't want to give any of the story away, but know that I enjoyed and would recommend this book.
🎧 From the moment Anna vows to help her uncle track down a war criminal who holds secrets to her great-grandparents’ disappearance during WWII, the book takes you on a wild rollercoaster ride through Iceland and Denmark with unexpected twists and turns from beginning to end. It is both entertaining and interesting with its rich historical details and references to the plight of the Jews in Denmark and Iceland during WWII.
The novel has colorful characters that come to life: Anna, a naive yet determined woman; the mysterious spy Samara; the dashing journalist Kristofer Tómasson; and my favorite Unn, a gruff, pipe-smoking little old lady who captains her own boat.
A couple of cons for me:
1) The romance needed more development. The romantic dialogue seemed stilted, forced, and amateurish, so I really wouldn’t deem it swoon-worthy.
2) I listened to the audible version and struggled with the narrator’s portrayal of Anna’s voice. However, she did a superb job with the foreign dialogue and accents.
If you like murder mysteries with a historical twist, I think you’ll enjoy this one.
Content: (S) None. (L) None. (V) Medium. Murders, shootings, beatings, and car accidents. Nothing in very graphic detail.
Language: G (0 swears, 0 “f”); Mature Content: PG; Violence: PG When 35-year-old Anna sees her uncle, her last living relative, die in front of her, he uses his last breath to tell her to run. Anna’s uncle had continued her father’s work to prove that their ancestors were not Nazi sympathizers, and now Anna feels the same duty to finish what they started. Following the teachings of her father, Anna starts down the right path, but digging into family secrets is dangerous for Anna’s heart as well as her life. Anna runs from people trying to kill her and is forced to trust strangers in order to reach her goals; she gets misled and discovers things about her loved ones that are hard to believe; and, yet, through it all, she barely scrapes by -- as should heroes who are on a quest for justice. While all these elements made the story as outlandish as it was entertaining, the climax felt less involved and victorious than I hoped. Peterson has written a compelling journey with a quick ending as she ties up all the loose ends. My favorite part was the author’s note where Peterson explains which WWII details from Anna’s story are true. Reviewed for https://kissthebook.blogspot.com/
Anna is visiting her Uncle Ezra in Iceland and he gets shot. She runs thinking someone is after her. Someone chases her and later she finds him in her Uncles hotel. Kristofer is a writer and he was doing a story on Mossad and Jewish hit men. Anna knew her father and uncle were spies ofr Mossad but didn't realize how specialized they were. The two work together to find proof that Anna's great grandfather was NOT a jewish Nazi sympathizer. They meet Samara at a safe house and she agrees to help to avenge Ezra's death. Anna finds Kristofer handsome but doesn't want anything to come between her and finding the truth. Samara has a lot of contacts and skills and gets them out of dangerous situations. The three end up going to Denmark and then back to Iceland. Anna finds out that Samara is actually her mother who she thought was killed when she was a child. So many groups are trying to stop them and I wasn't sure why it mattered that the great grandfather was a Nazi spy.
Anna was able to find proof that he was not, Samara died saving her and Kristoffer proposed at the end of the book. Not at all believable but to be set in Iceland was interesting.

If you enjoy mystery suspense novels, then you’ll need to pick this book up from Kathi Oram Peterson. She takes you on an adventure to Iceland and Denmark with characters that are trying to solve a mystery dated back in WWII. She takes you on a journey a little less known about WWII history which I quite thoroughly enjoyed. Though there were elements that she created for her story, she still weaved in actual elements of WWII.
The characters in this book were well developed, the plot excellent, and the tension was superb. I loved every moment of this book, and I think you would too. I highly recommend this read to all mystery, suspense, and history lovers.
Though I have enjoyed other books from this author, this one tortured me. I kept reading it because I wanted to know if I had correctly guessed the end from the beginning of the book...I had. There were still some minor surprises, but most of the plot twists were heavily telegraphed. Worse, the main character is exceptionally stupid and stubborn. The story, as told from her first-person POV, is constantly belabored and over-explained as if the reader were just as dense as she is. I can't fathom what happened to this book; maybe a ghost writer? Breach of Trust (published in 2017) was fantastic; this was...not.
"Treacherous Legacy" by Kathi Oram Peterson was a suspenseful read with a lot of history thrown in. I had mixed feelings about this book. I am not a history buff so some parts had too much history in it for me. Yet, some parts were more suspenseful than history filled, and I loved that part! All that to say, if you enjoy a clean, suspenseful read with history, you will enjoy this novel.
I received this book from the publisher through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
This book is full of twists and turns. It is a fast paced thriller of spies and assassins. Anna is in Iceland to meet with her uncle Ezra. He is murdered while they were eating in a public restaurant. Anna goes on the run. She meets Kristofer who is an investigative reporter and wants to help. I don't want to ruin anything, so I will just say it is a rollercoaster of a ride. I would recommend this book.
A fast paced historical fiction mystery to find out if Anna’s great grandfather was a Nazi spy during WWII and a traitor to the many Jews who died at the hand of the Nazi’s.
The reader is torn like Anna to know who to trust on this journey as everyone is holding back some truth, especially Samara.
Anna is determined to find the truth behind her families involvement in the Mossad and what lead to her father and uncle’s demise.
This is the first book that I have read by Kathi Oram Peterson. I was impressed with how quickly she got me involved with the action and the details of the story. It seemed that there was new information being reveled in each new chapter. This had murder, mystery and romance all in one story line. And don't forget about spies and the History of areas that have been forgotten about. I found it to be a great read, thus the 5 stars.
I received this book as a digital Advanced Readers Copy and it had me from the get go! I love suspense, I love history and I love romance. This book hit all parts. The fact that it was based around WW2 and it had some history in it that I was not aware of makes it even better! Thank you Kathi for writing such a good read!! It is definitely going in my collection for a re-read!
