The Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) changed the world with his genius as an inspiring spiritual teacher and as a brilliant diplomatic leader who delivered the blessing of the Qur’an to humankind. Muhammad’s extraordinary moral character is one we can all embrace and aspire to: he was honest, trustworthy, patient, reflective, compassionate, and responsible for taking account of his actions.
Jebara’s enlightening study narrates how Muhammad approached his life as a journey always focused on learning and gathering knowledge that he then utilized to begin a civic movement and to build a nation based on equal rights and inclusiveness of all people, regardless of race, class, gender, or faith. Muhammad steered his followers away from degrading others who are less fortunate, and he worked tirelessly to end corruption and exploitation by calling for the freeing of slaves and treating them as equals while he also called for the empowerment of women in every aspect of society.
My profound admiration for Muhammad grew even more with Jebara’s research showing how Muhammad’s great humanity not only made him an advocate for embracing people of every ethnicity, background, and faith, but his humanity also extended to stewardship of the natural world with all its diversity of plants and animals. Muhammad was a respected and beloved member of his community long before his prophethood began, and Jebara enables us to see how he “blossomed” into a God-guided reformer capable of changing society through ethical principles of compassion and forgiveness and through civic principles of equality and justice.
After God’s revelations began, Muhammad relied on the support of his first wife Khadijah to overcome his fears and doubts about his ability to change the world. Once he understood his mission as a prophet, he cultivated his mindset to fully engage with the message Allah entrusted him with. Muhammad sought to guide people out of stagnation. He asked his followers to abandon ignorance and arrogance by opening their hearts and expanding their minds through lifelong learning. Muhammad’s life was the epitome of jihad: a personal struggle to endure adversity and to conquer his own inadequacies by abandoning any impulse to wrong others.
Jebara also makes clear how the beauty and ingenuity of the Qur’an can be gained from understanding the Qur’an’s many names given to God, which makes God a vibrant, multidimensional entity and a merciful, compassionate presence that is always seeking to instill good action in humankind. Muhammad not only shared the transformative power of the Qur’an, but he also demonstrated how to cultivate the Qur’an’s message of peace and compassion into an active relationship with the Divine. Jebara enables readers to see how the Qur’an worked as an ongoing, collaborative series of encounters that sparked change in Muhammad who then engaged with God’s message to guide his followers toward unlocking their own possibilities for growth and improvement.

I was very eager to read this book. It is so well-researched and easy to read. The topic is one I have long been interested in and yet everything I read was contradictory. Not this.
I am quite certain Muslim academics knew and understood the subject o Muhammad, the rest of us were a bit confused. Who exactly was he and what shaped his view of the world?
This was nothing like any other book I have read. It was researched and what came out of that was a man I could understand. Surrounded by women, some Jewish and Christian, He was inspired by the experiences he had and the people he met. I understood why there are no images of him. He truly was an inspirational man who believed in a worldview and had a vision of what the world should look like.
Did he change the way the world moved forward? I would say he did. From his birth to his death he was a most remarkable man. With all the translations having different meanings, it is difficult to sort fact from fiction. This was eye-opening work for me.

An amazing ode to Islamic scholarship and a book that must be read by anyone attempting to understand the itjihad of Islamic scholarship and the teachings of Muhammad (pbuh), Jebara writes not a religious tet, rather a historical text that documents the life and rise of Muhammad, but written in English in the format of Islamic scholarship - meaning that the sources (historical, secular and religious, Sunni and Shi'a) are utilized, and the biliography is transcribed in the fashion of the Sahih Hadith - with an emphasis of chain/link between scholars establsihing the veracity of the claims.
For many American Muslims (indeed, Muslims who read in the English language) one of the main staples to read about Prohpet Muhammad (pbuh) is the Lesley Hazleton "The First Muslim: The Story of Muhammad" and prior to the release of this book, many would argue (and perhaps a few still will) that this work on the life of Muhammad was the example for Western/English readers to understand the prophet of Islam. However, as Jebara points out in his introduction (though not naming the book and others that have been written about Muhammad) that Jebara took issues with how the books codefied Muhammad. and his supposed exploits - from marriages, warfare, and supposed relations with those that were outside of the Muslim Ummah.
Jebara sets out to contradict many of the persumed assumptions about Muhammad on his path to prophethood and his teachings regarding Islam - from claims of negative relations with the Jewish tribes of Yathrib, to the age that he married Khadijah and his subseqeuent wives and the nature of the marriages, to how he conducted diplomacy and warfare with the contemporary powers outside of Mecca and greater Arabia.
Furthermore, what fully sets apart this account of Muhammad and his life is the emphasis that Jebara goes to pull back the curtain on both the family of the Prophet, as well as his companions, the Sahaba. Along the way, Jebara also weaves his deep knowledge of the Qur'an and the Arabic language. As a scholar who not only memorized the Qur'an but also the evolution of the Arabic language, Jebara is able to take the reader down a more nuanced path of transliteration that fundamentally changes the English understanding of the Islamic holy text - and futher underlines how all of these factors (the revlation, the Islamic holy book, the diversity of the early Muslims, relationships with non-Muslims, etc) are part of the essential questions of faith for Muslims.
At once a biography of an impactful person on the trajectory of humanity, but also a book for Muslims and non-Muslims to better understand both Islam and Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), a book that anyone attempting to understand Islam and the last prophet should read and add to their shelves.

Although I'm a native Arab-Muslim, and read many books on this topic (the Prophet's Seerah).. i enjoyed this book's audio version very much. The story telling is superb, and the author is very neutral. It gave me a fresh new perspective on the life, hardships and teachings of "the seal of prophets" in an attractive, modern day narration. What i admired most is how the book shed a light on two of the most controversial aspects of Islam (nowadays); slavery & treatment of women. You cannot help but fall in love with the compassionate, revolutionary and visionary personality of Mohammad (pbuh).

I loved this book for it's sense of history, scholarship, and message. So much has become confused and tainted about this figure that it was wonderful to read an account of his life and teachings that is based on hard research and perspective.

The book refreshes the core message by Muhammad PBUH. The true message has been lost in wilderness and we are more focused on the acts rather than on purpose .
This books cover all phases of life of Holy Prophet and how he picked himself after every set back . A read for those who really want to know the great man on earth and how he transformed the jhaliiyaa society with his acts and kindness .
In the end the author gives a small glimpse of Umayyad caliphate how the message was moulded for their personal gain of power.
Give it a read will make you feel good …

One of the best seerahs I've ever read. It's super engaging and the writing style is beautiful. I love how he focused on the meaning of words. The story focuses on the prophets (s.a.w) character but also on the women he was surrounded by which was refreshing. My only issue: sometimes he deviates from accepted Islamic history, specifically concerning Aisha's age. I know this is a controversial topic but the number he gave jn the book was not one I've ever heard discussed before. I'd have like to have heard his reasoning behind that. Regardless the book was amazing.

I just finished reading this book and I HIGHLY recommend it.
It’s beautifully written, well researched and really shows you how “religious” leaders have really managed to distort so many things for their personal and political gains.
He ended slavery, empowered women, made his whole life journey about showing people the importance of not stagnating in their life but seek knowledge and take that knowledge to change their lives to the better, built an inclusive nation and ended corruption to name a few.
He was compassionate, patient, honest and emphasized that one’s journey in life should contribute to the greater good.
One thing for sure is that he has been failed by his nation in my opinion.
If his followers apply just 1% of what he taught them, things surely will be different.

What an amazing work of scholarship; this is easily the best work I have ever reader about the founder of Islam, and it upends so many preconceptions and bigoted assumptions by other people. Everyone should read this and understand the philosophical and practical underpinnings of an extraordinary man.

I am a native Arabic speaking Syrian, a full professor of medicine, from the city of Aleppo, with a traditional Islamic upbringing, who has read multiple books about the prophet’s biography including (but not limited to) Ibn Hisham, Ibn Ishaq, Karen Armstrong book, in the footsteps of the prophet, Martin Lings book and others. Practically, the main conclusion that I reached is that most of these books are centered around the political and military aspects of the prophet’s life and failed to show Muhammad as a civil man. As such, I was always in search for references/books that reveal the humanness and genius of this historical personality by which he remained alive in the psyche and consciousness of his followers up till now!
And I finally found that book! And below is the story!!!
After two years of virtual meetings due to the COVID epidemic, I was finally able to attend the annual national kidney foundation meeting 2022 in Boston. As an avid reader and book lover, I found myself at Barnes & Noble walking through the new arrival section. Suddenly, up on the shelf at my height level, my eyes caught Jebara’s book: Muhammad, the world-changer. As such, I instantaneously bought the book and started reading it on my flight back home. As a pleasant surprise, I was blown away by this book!!
“Muhammad, the World-Changer” is an outstanding masterpiece on the main icon of Islam that is well-researched, thought-provoking, and scholarly, written in a novelistic style. Upon reading it, you have the feeling that you are watching a movie with powerful vivid images and intense emotions. “Muhammad, the World-Changer” triggers a sense of awe, love and appreciation for prophet Muhammad.
Why is “Muhammad, the World-Changer” so important?
Emmanuel Levinas rightly said: “Islam understood better than anyone that a universal truth is worth more than local particularisms.” As such, Muslims feel at home anywhere, a feeling supported by what their prophet stated that any location can be a place for worship. With this mindset, the prophet and early Muslims migrated to Madinah as asylum seekers, a place that became home for the early community. Twelve centuries later, the author’s family itself migrated to North America and grew its new roots to become citizens of the new world. This dynamism and universalism of the revelation (Quran) and living example of the prophet are the driving force of Islamic minds.
Even now, despite the decline of religion, and gradual disappearance of metaphysics, 1 in 4 of the world’s population is a follower of Prophet Muhammad and at some level practices his teachings. Hence, the question becomes “how did the message of Muhammad remain intact and sound in both its main text (Quran) and practices?”. This book of Jebara is a serious attempt to show how the example of a man who lived in Arabia 14 centuries ago can be modeled in our modern lives resulting in bringing healing and peace to a fragmented humanity that is plagued with wars, fears and inequalities.

After two years of virtual meetings due to the COVID epidemic, I was finally able to attend the annual national kidney foundation meeting 2022 in Boston. As an avid reader and book lover, I found myself at Barnes & Noble walking through the new arrival section. Suddenly, up on the shelf at my height level, my eyes caught Jebara’s book: Muhammad, the world-changer. As such, I instantaneously bought the book and started reading it on my flight back home. As a pleasant surprise, I was blown away by this book!!
“Muhammad, the World-Changer” is an outstanding masterpiece on the main icon of Islam that is well-researched, thought-provoking, and scholarly, written in a novelistic style. Upon reading it, you have the feeling that you are watching a movie with powerful vivid images and intense emotions. “Muhammad, the World-Changer” triggers a sense of awe, love and appreciation for prophet Muhammad.
Why is “Muhammad, the World-Changer” so important?
Emmanuel Levinas rightly said: “Islam understood better than anyone that a universal truth is worth more than local particularisms.” As such, Muslims feel at home anywhere, a feeling supported by what their prophet stated that any location can be a place for worship. With this mindset, the prophet and early Muslims migrated to Madinah as asylum seekers, a place that became home for the early community. Twelve centuries later, the author’s family itself migrated to North America and grew its new roots to become citizens of the new world. This dynamism and universalism of the revelation (Quran) and living example of the prophet are the driving force of Islamic minds.

This was a refreshing read. I can see now - very clearly - how Muhammad’s call ushered a golden age in the Islamic world and beyond. It wasn’t about religious ideology or rituals, it was a call to change a stagnant mindset, and an inspiration for social and moral reform. Principles that can be applied to any place, and time. So enjoyed the detailed story line too.

A TRULY World-Changing book about the World-Changer.
I am a Syrian American teenager who loves and enjoys reading a wide variety of books including the Islamic ones. However, most of the books that I have tried reading about Prophet life were non-engaging as they were textbook making them very dry and boring for the most part. Further, these reading materials did not establish any connection between me and the prophet. As such, prophet Muhammad remained a historical non relevant person.
One day, my dad surprised with “Muhammad, The World-Changer”!
I instantaneously started reading the book and was captivated to the degree the I finished reading it in 3 days.
Upon completing the reading, I really was able to connect to the Prophet on a personal level as a human just like me. I also loved how the author not only focused on the Prophet's life after Prophecy but also the beautiful details about his early life. I learned so much about his amazing, unparalleled character even before prophecy at such a young age.
This book is just fantastic “treat” as it shows the Prophet's logical thinking even at such a young age that continued throughout his life.
This book must be read by all teens, adults, Muslims, and non-Muslims to truly try to picture the Prophet's difficult childhood, admirable teens and later life, and his truly amazing character as a human and as a Prophet.
He was not portrait as a man with a perfect life that is free of hardships! Rather, he was shown in a practical human manner that depicted the different seasons of life stained with losses of loved ones at a young age, animosity of Meccans and his struggles to remain faithful to revelation. This book shows the brilliance of the prophet in living the example of Quran. It is within this context that I and others will be able to relate to the prophet example in maneuvering through and around problems, obstacles, tough days, etc.
In summary, this outstanding book paints with perfection the Prophet, the civil man, in a way I can love him more, appreciate him more, and think of him with a and awe and respect unparalleled to any other man.
And these reasons and more, much appreciation and praise go to the author Mohamed Jebara for this beautiful masterpiece!

The author has opened my mind and purified my heart. Reading the simple, poetic, and clear prose has cleansed my heart of so many misconceptions, opened my eyes to new realms of possibility, and gave me peace and joy. This book has affirmed my faith, committed me to my community, and inspired me to pursue righteousness and seek virtue… all while I’m still on chapter 3!
The author stands apart as a master of Islamic studies, with a deep and powerful creative impulse, combined with a genius earned from years of teaching and decades of study. This modern classic, the first of its kind, will certainly revitalize the Islamic faith in the eyes of both non-Muslim and Muslim communities. An exceptionally well-written and well-researched book. If read with an open mind and heart, it can be a life-changing read. To be honest, I started reading it with a lot of skepticism about the intentions of the author. Reading through the initial pages of the book, my first apprehension was that the author was trying to humanize the divine message that inspires hundreds of millions of Muslims all over the world. Reading on, however, I realized that the author was only highlighting the humanity and humanism of Muhammad and emphasizing the social and humanistic elements of the divine message rather than ritualistic and mechanistic ones. My second apprehension was about the sources of information of the author since the book flowed like a novel with a lot of detail about the life of Muhammad, especially about his pre-prophethood life. This apprehension was addressed in the last few pages of the book dedicated to a detailed description of the author’s sources of information.
With these two concerns addressed, I must admit that I was left thoroughly enlightened not only about the life and times of the Holy Prophet but also about the essence of the Holy Quran, which is obscured by scholars fixated on mechanistic interpretations of a highly humanistic message.
Reading through the pages of the book, I got a sense that the most convoluted in Islamic scholarship are the interpretations of the role of women in Islamic society. The book leaves one thoroughly enlightened about the extraordinary dignity accorded to women in Islam at a time when female infanticide was considered a tolerable norm. It not only talks about the message of the Holy Quran with regard to women but also the extraordinary respect the prophet gave to women in his personal conduct. It’s quite ironic that in the popular literature on Islam there is hardly any mention of the powerful female figures that played an instrumental role in the life of Muhammad. For instance, while we read a lot about how his uncle Abu Talib was instrumental in the formative years of Muhammad’s life but there’s hardly anything about the significance of the role of Abu Talib’s wife Fatima (after whom the prophet named his daughter) in the most turbulent years of Muhammad’s life or the role of the slave woman Barakah in those testing times. Even the literature on Khadija is not rich enough to describe how much the Holy Prophet leaned on her and how extraordinary a level of respect he accorded to her in a society in which women were invariably considered inferior to men.
The prophet’s message was that of equality and emancipation for everyone: the free, the enslaved, and the women. It’s fascinating how the emancipator of souls and the champion of egalitarianism is presented as the policeman of individual mind and body and the purveyor of division in popular Islamic scholarship.
Alongside its inspirational commentary on the essence of the prophet’s message, the book also debunks some misperceptions produced by the popular literature on the life of the prophet, such as Khadija was 15 years older than Prophet Muhammad, Aisha was 12 years of age at the time of her marriage with the Holy Prophet, Muhammad ordered the execution of dozens of Jews of Medina, etc. The book shows that Khadija was only three years older than Muhammad, Aisha was 29 when she married the prophet, and no massacre of the Jews took place in Medina at all.

A captivating illustration on the life of Prophet Muhammad (peace be on him) with a storyline that illuminates his human nature, spiritual growth and beautiful character epitomizing the first revealed Qur'anic word: blossom forth! The descriptions of the places and people with whom he interacted provides deeper meaning and clarifies traditional interpretations of many historical facts. A must read!

An excellent, jargon-free and engaging volume on the life of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). This book includes a multitude of facts and interpretations that run contrary to conventional Islamic wisdom. Consequently, as I read the book, I wondered if it's a revisionist take, a hagiography or a more reflective interpretation. Unfortunately, there is little information available about the author that indicates his expertise in Quranic/Islamic scholarship. Nevertheless, it was well worth the read.
Something that stood out from this book was that the Quraish - Muhammad's own tribe who initially resisted him and later converted to Islam - were highly reluctant to any types of change. So, in a way, it is not entirely surprising that countries such as Saudi Arabia today practice a highly black-and-white brand of Islam such as Wahabism/Salafism, as the leadership of the Muslim world passed on from Muhammad onto members of his tribe who were generally not quite as progressive as him on most issues.

As a Christian, I’m no expert on the topic, but I found this book very interesting and I learned a lot. It covers wide subjects from history, language to culture and more. Written like a novel or self-help book, the author creatively uses poetic language to paint pictures and bring the events to life. I couldn't put it down and read it twice. It's a must read for anyone who wants to understand the Muslim faith and it’s origins, or just enjoy a captivating story. The author's art is captivating and decorates each chapter. It’s definitely a keeper and I ordered several copies to gift friends and family for Christmas this year. Highly recommended!

A friend recommended I read this book and decided to check it out. I'm not usually a big history reader, but I found this book truly unique in its engaging style. It's simple to follow, but detailed and complex. As a Muslim woman, I enjoyed reading about the amazing women who positively impacted the prophet Muhammad and the many women he empowered and supported. The author's creative use of words brought the subject matter to life and made for a pleasant reading experience. My husband and I have been reading it together, I am on my second read. Highly recommend for anyone who wants an inspirational book to read or wants to learn about a seminal figure who's had a great impact on the world. Highly recommended!

Muhammad, the World Changer
Book 12 of 2023. Mohamad Jebara sets out to align divergent and sometimes contradictory sources of information on the Prophet Muhammad’s life and philosophical roots. And I think he’s largely successful. One thing that stands out compared to other biographies of Muhammad I’ve read is the role his adoptive family and close companions played - he certainly lived in relationship to others and their influence was keenly felt. This one also makes you feel the trauma that was doubtless formative in his life and his sense of needing to make an impact.
The prophet Muhammad comes through as a thoughtful man who observed the world around him through the worldview that all prophets must. He was entirely sensitive to oppression in social constructs; had he contained his life to only that sphere he would have been merely remarkable. He’s portrayed as precocious, not perfect. Like so many prophets, the things he didn’t care enough about became areas for others to fight over in the lack of clarity (succession and long-term political organization being areas of remaining strife today).
The founding of Islam as an “ideological civic movement” focused on returning to core Abrahamic values and Muhammad’s chafing at a stagnant social system aligns neatly with Brueggemann’s views in Prophetic Imagination.
The scene-setting of a culturally and religiously diverse Mecca and a cosmopolitan Damascus are a real treat. The idea of a young, impressionable Muhammad joining Jewish relatives for meals or attending a service at a Christian basilica are noteworthy. Also his sense of dread about returning to Mt Hira.
One thing that provides minor irritation is the lack of criticality about some of the stories that seem apocryphal and hero-worshippy. Certainly the prophet wouldn’t condone this treatment (and Jebara confirms this in the foreword), but stories that are too cute to be entirely accurate are presented without comment.

One of my favorite books. I have read a lot in this genre and came across many books that adopt the same style throughout, never daring to stretch boundaries or be unconventional. I have never seen one combine so many elements as beautifully as this one, including storytelling, mystical spirituality, and a powerful message.

Dr. Jebara provides a sincere, authentic and an engaging narrative on the journey of the prophet. Through his descriptive language, one feels like Meccan history is brought to life and the prophet's humanity highlighted for all of us to relate to. Beautiful read.

Beautifully written, well researched and organized. It is a must read. The author did an excellent job in zooming in and out of the personal life of Prophet Mohammed that was very enlightening and a joy to read. He introduced the prophet from a lens that was completely new to me as a Muslim. You will not regret reading this book.
