Robson Moura, a well known and accomplished Brazilian Jiu Jitsu athlete, spent his early life below poverty level in a shanty town north of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. Thanks to loving parents and an introduction to the world of Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, he was able to avoid the temptations of his environment. This relatively new martial art transformed a small shy young man, with a never give up attitude, into a world champion powerhouse who dominated the world of competitive Jiu Jitsu for over 10 years. Robson Moura, with co-author John Graybeal, recap the trials and tribulations experienced from the neighborhood and community where Robson grew up. The reader will go on a journey with Robson from humble beginnings, growing through Jiu Jitsu to eventually moving to the United States and living out The American Dream. This book is for anyone who enjoys reading about overcoming cultural, economic, and personal challenges. Robson Moura's one of a kind story is vividly brought to life - while he shares unique stories and how his overall mindset propelled him to success in Jiu Jitsu, business and family.
I knew Robson personally so maybe my review is bias. I normally wouldn't read books like this but Robson was a major part of my martial arts development and I'm glad I did. Additionally, he was kind enough to gift me a paperback copy of the book with some RMNU logo stickers so I'm very grateful. Many thanks, Robson. It was fun to recognize the names of people I've met throughout my time being around him and how their stories intersect with his. Interesting also to read about his origins of which I didn't know. The book explains well what living in a favela is like. There's some funny moments too. Best way I can describe it is maybe deadpan humor, something I truly appreciate. It's a very easy read and has some black and white pictures in the end. I think I caught some grammatical errors but I didn't think too much into it and just kept reading along. I think the moral of the story is try to be the best at whatever it is you dedicate yourself to and surround yourself with good people.
Starting in the favela all the way to 8x World Champion Robson Moura shares his life's story. Robson & John take you through his journey of life and how his experiences have lead him to achieve all he has. Great inspirational story even if your not a Jiu-Jitsu practitioner. If you are and especially if you're a member of RMNU, it's even better!
