This is a book about horses, and it is a book about life. It is, at its heart, about having a happy horse, but it is also an exploration of the human psyche. Its central thesis is that the greatest bit of kit anyone has in the training and care of a horse is the human mind. And its most delightful discovery is that all the elements that go into true connection and relationship with your horse will enhance your human relationships as well. It was written during the global pandemic of 2020, and it reflects some of the stresses and strains of that strange and unsettling year. It also demonstrates that one of the most potent antidotes to turbulent and uncertain times is to dedicate yourself to something above and beyond yourself - in this case, a grand red mare and her merry herd. It is a book about resilience and creativity and imagination. It has moments of goofiness and it veers off on occasional tangents into the purely speculative. It does not shy away from disaster, but it gallops always towards hope. It is, as are all the Happy Horse books, about love. And it does not apologise for that.
Tania's stories about how she has had to change herself to be the human her horses, her glorious red mare especially, need are a gift to horsemen and men everywhere. Not to mention to horses, those wonderful creatures that have had humans in their thrall since the days of first contact. Humble, illuminating, funny and full of joy this book will both delight and inspire.
I have read all of the Happy Horse series and I loved them all. Tania is the reason I am on my horsing journey and her books hold a special place in my heart! Thank you for your honesty x
My horses will thank you too for helping me to be the human they deserve. This wonderful book will be reread a million times as I keep on learning and discovering something new for my toolkit.
This book talks about a special relationship with horses. As the author says at the end, it may be for you now, or maybe later, or maybe not. Those aren't her exact words, but close. To me it was very encouraging about how one can connect with their horse.
Wonderfully written book. I feel like Tania is sitting next to me and having a conversation. Much wisdom imparted for those of us that wish to emotionally bond with our horses.
