Perfect for fans of courtly competition, elemental magic, dragons, and a little bit of steam!

Spark to Shadow starts with the main character, Fang, who is coming to age as matron of her witch coven, and to unite the next era of witches, must find a foreign consort. Fang was confident that she would choose Kyuho, a childhood friend, but agrees to travel to the Adan country to meet the other males, and experience an unexpected adventure along the way.

Spark to Shadow starts with the main character, Fang, who is coming to age as matron of her witch coven, and to unite the next era of witches, must find a foreign consort. Fang was confident that she would choose Kyuho, a childhood friend, but agrees to travel to the Adan country to meet the other males, and experience an unexpected adventure along the way.

Happy to lounge about the estate and eat fresh fruit, Fangs adventure starts when she meets a beast that has been terrorizing the people, and the Adan leaders refuse to offer any aid. Fang takes matters into her own hands with the aid of the mysterious Sanha, who is discovered to be a male witch which is known to be quite rare. As she makes acquaintances with this shadowy figure, she learns that they could both use each others help, and that something deeper may lie in his very existence. As Fang learns more about the male witchs, and strange Adan laws that try to cover them up, she also finds an attraction that leads her to a hard decision on who she wishes to bring back home.

All the while, this story is full of beautiful magic, horrid beasts, and of course, dragons!!! (I can’t spoil all the fun)

I absolutely devoured this story and was so sad when is was over. From the beginning I loved the way that the story was told, found myself falling in love with the characters, and dying to know what happens next. I love the way Kim build the plot, with many little plot lines that leave the reader wondering as the story progresses.

I loved all the different representations that sets this story apart, including the Thai ties and culture that the story takes place in! Another thing that I liked was how Kim explored things such as pleasure houses, and normalizes the idea that sometimes woman just need a sexual escape, and that it isn’t a slutty thing to do.

That being said, this novel definitely had some steamy scenes, and I enjoyed the way that the romance was build up and explored. It allowed me to fall in love with both Sanha and Kyuho, and I was just as torn and surprised (in a bitter sweet way) when Fang made her final choice.

Overall I thought that this was an amazing book thank you so much Literary Bound Tours for allowing me to share it I’m so glad I had a chance to read it! For anyone looking to broaden their reading reps, read more indie authors, or just come along for the joy of the ride, I would absolutely recommend this!!!

What a dazzling debut! I felt a definite "The Legend of Korra" vibe, but of course with slightly older characters and a little bit more steam! I thought the take on magic was new and refreshing with the use of covens. I appreciated the play on traditional patriarchal power--and instead having the women hold all the "witch" power and control. The world building in this book was rly intricate and I enjoyed it so much. It was inspired by Thai culture, and its inspired by so many real life events; it’s amazing. I loved it almost as much as I enjoyed the main character’s “take no shit” personality. Also, she’s name Fang. I’m obsessed. She was strong and she knew what she wanted, and even when tested she stuck to her morals and remained brave.

Spark to Shadow is a tale of love trumps all thrown into a new light. Taken into a world of magic and dragons with typical gender power roles thrown on their head, Atima Kim gives us a brand new world.

As an eternal pessimist I am typically not a fan of love trumps all story lines, but Kim redefined the genre. We see old friendships grow and a new relationship blossom ... no insta-love in sight. Fang’s final choice a spectacular design on the part of Atima Kim.
