Jamey‎ Rootes has served as President of the Houston Texans since the team’s inception. Under his continued leadership the Texans have consistently been recognized as one of the most valuable professional sports franchises both in the NFL and globally, as measured by a variety of business publications.

Under Rootes’ Management, the Texans extended their sellout game streak to 185 consecutive home games – a Houston NFL record. A testament to his development and dedication to the team’s highly acclaimed customer service strategy and fan experience on game day.

Rootes' hands-on approach to all business functions of the club, including securing stadium-naming rights and sponsorship, coordinated radio and TV broadcasting relationships, engineered the club's successful ticket and suite sales campaigns, led the creation and launch of the team’s identity.

During Rootes tenure, the Texans have earned many distinctions, including numerous “Crystal Awards” and most recently two American Business Awards for marketing excellence. J.D. Power & Associates recognized the team for providing the best fan experience in the NFL and even featured the Texans as a service success story in their book entitled “Satisfaction.” The Texans were also recognized with Sports Business Journal’s PRISM Award, which is given annually to the top major professional sports team based on business excellence criteria.

He also serves as President of Lone Star Sports & Entertainment (LSSE), a sports management agency associated with the Texans. LSSE has been a catalyst for some of Houston's most significant sporting events. LSSE created and now manages the Texas Bowl, Houston's annual college football bowl game, as well as the Texas Kickoff, an annual college football game. In addition to college football games, Rootes also oversees the production of many soccer games put on by LSSE such as COPA America in 2016, the Manchester Derby in 2017 and an International Champions Cup match between Real Madrid and Bayern Munich in 2019.

Rootes has been one of Houston’s leading executives for more than two decades. Sports Business Journal twice selected Rootes as a member of its distinguished “Forty Under 40” list of leading sports executives, and in 2014 Rootes was named a finalist for Executive of the Year by the Stadium Business Awards. In 2019, Rootes was selected as one of Houston Business Journal’s Most Admired CEOs and was selected in 2016 as the first-ever Houston Business Journal’s Business Person of the Year after serving as chairman of the Greater Houston Partnership. Rootes served on the Super Bowl Host Committees in 2004 and 2017 and was also appointed deputy chairman of two public boards for Super Bowl LI. Rootes led the efforts in securing the Texans appearance on Monday Night Football in Mexico for the first time in NFL history and elevated Houston’s visibility on an international scale.

Rootes maintains an active role in the community by serving on the Board of Directors of the Greater Houston Partnership and the United Way of Greater Houston. He also oversees the activities of the Houston Texans Foundation, whose mission is to be “Champions for Youth,” which has donated more than $35 million since its inception in 2002 through annual fundraising events, disaster response programs, the team’s United Way campaign and partnerships with nonprofit organizations on gameday.

Rootes has consistently been at the forefront of disaster recovery, most recently in response to COVID-19. Rootes is co-chairing the Greater Houston COVID-19 Recovery Fund, a first-ever partnership between the United Way of Greater Houston and the Greater Houston Community Foundation. The fund has raised over $14 million to support the most vulnerable families and individuals in the community. A business/nonfiction from someone who is widely known and successful. Jamey Rootes already has a checkmark next to his name as being an authority on this subject. He has a very detailed and impressive resume so I was honestly curious to see where he could take a book like this.

Let me just say that I was impressed by how much he managed to pack into this book. You get his story, his philosophy, and how to implement it into your own business and management skills.

I was happy with how the book was laid out, I think it was easy to follow. I loved the insight into his mind as well as tips and tricks for the reader.

Jamey Rootes highlights the fact that being a leader is a mindset and you need to understand many elements to be a good one.

Let's be honest if you've ever been a leader of any kind, you have faced some unexpected challenges at one point or another. It's inevitable and I think Jamey Rootes embraces that idea in his book. He knows that leaders will face unwanted challenges, so his idea is to lay out a plan and prepare you.

His idea of a game plan is a well set out map/guide if you will of being a leader.

Rootes writes in a way that his authority on the subject really manages to shine through.

This is a good book for motivate and get some good ideas to be a good leader

As the former corporate leadership reporter at USA Today, I’ve made my way around a leadership book or two. I have no personal aspirations to lead, and yet I recommend reading a good one from time to time. The reason, as “The Winning Plan” makes clear, is that leadership and pessimism don’t coexist. Jamey Rootes establishes this as well as anyone and his book will inspire any couch potato to rise and make things happen. For those of you who aspire to be leaders, Rootes demonstrates how to get “elective effort” out of a team — not how to make people work hard but how to get them to want to work hard. Rootes isn’t a cockeyed optimist. Life is difficult and made easier when that fact is accepted. Failure as a leader is inevitable. Hubris is a dangerous byproduct of success. Leadership does not come natural, it is learned with hard work followed by more hard work. Life’s too short to work with turds. “We have to play the game anyway, we might as well win it,” is a lesson he carried away as a collegiate soccer player and you can’t find a page that doesn’t enforce that mindset. Leaders reward those who persevere and he rewards readers with some of his best nuggets near the end.

A cut above the rest

I typically try to weight the pros and cons of a good book much like he suggests doing towards the end of the book which is one of my favorite parts. When you consider how much you have to be grateful for, it leaves a very short list for what’s missing or challenges you are facing. I truly gained more from his book than I anticipated and I have been a Texans fan since the day I stepped foot in Texas & before that we lived in Kansas and remain die hard Chiefs fans so I felt connected to his story from the beginning also because I am a youth soccer coach and
truly appreciate the knowledge and basically a road map of his journey and how you can apply it to your journey. Amazing gifts that he’s shared with us readers. I already knew the Houston Texans is one of the greatest franchises ever but knowing the man behind the machine just makes them that much more honorable. They are HUGE supporters in the community and they emulate everything an NFL franchise should be and so much more and this book goes into detail on some very important contributions from the franchise that deserve to be highlighted and I never knew about many of them. If you truly are a Texan you do not want to pass this one by, buy it, download it, trust me you will be inspired beyond measure.
