A sweet seasonal tale of the Lyon and her matchmaking.

A doctor meets a writer after she’s attacked and takes her to Mrs Dove Lyon .
Unbeknownst to them both she’s already matching them in her mind and her plans are perfect.

This is a sweet tale of romance and the beginnings of love that are helped along by her father and Bessie .
It’s enjoyable and entertaining.

Viola Black is not conventional Regency woman, she dresses as a man to sell her sought-after plays to London companies. Her father, wily solicitor Malcolm Black, turns a benevolent blind eye to her habits. That is, until one frigid night, when she’s cornered by ruffians. While Viola tries to dismiss the incident as a hazard of London life, Papa is more alarmed. She senses there is far more he's not telling her. But she's keeping something to herself, too. Though she was shaken by her attack, she ...more

I'm sorry to say I'm not too fussed on this novella or the writing style, part of the Lyon's Den series and set in London 1814. The writing is fine within itself, but seems all over the place, with a lot of narration of the story and telling, not showing. Also there are many, many short sentences, which were quite annoying and kept distracting me. For a novella there are a lot of characters and the first chapter is Viola's father Malcolm (his POV) and Mrs Dove-Lyon discussing how to match Viola ...more

Very confusing story

Not a fan of this kind d of writing. No background, no explanation. This story just jumped everywhere and nowhere. Did not contribute to the Lyons Den at all.

The Lyon's Den in Winter by Whitney Blake is another entry into the world of matchmaker, Bessie Dove-Lyon. This time the two people involved had met previously when Viola Black had managed to get herself robbed and injured and Dr. Duncan Nelson, although in his cups, had rescued her and brought her to Mrs. Dove-Lyon's house so he could treat her injuries. Viola is an interesting character, the daughter of an actress and a lawyer, she herself is on the edge of spinsterhood, dresses like a man so ...more

A suspenseful Regency romance, this novel also has a mystery that is uncovered. Viola is a playwright and although well disguised, she is attacked late one night. Coming to the rescue, Dr Duncan Neilson manages to extricate her, albeit he is rather worse for wear. When Viola is marched into The Black Widow’s parlour by her father, ostensibly to find her a suitable match, she is surprised when her rescuer is escorted into the room. Viola understands her father well enough to know that he is preva ...more

Dr. Duncan Neilson comes to the rescue of a young man to quickly realize its actually a young beautiful young woman. Viola Black is not conventional young lady, she dresses as a man to sell her plays to London companies. After she’s attacked her father decides he’s to blame, or rather his past and sets out to see the Black Widow of Whitechapel to arrange a marriage for his daughters protection. Enjoyable spin on the theatrical!

A fun melodrama with depth found in the intrigues and mystery of its characters and how the tale unfolds through split layers of thoughtful musings, deduction and action.
Duncan and Viola are sweety endearing - a delightful combination of adaptable, feisty intelligence, strength and vulnerability as they learn to trust and talk their way out of one misadventure and straight into the next. Mainly, a future together courtesy of one worried but wily father, a percep

I have loved reading this series and enjoy the antics of the characters; especially of Bessie Dove-Lyon as she puts her matching skills to work on her cliental. Most are hired by their concerned parents/parent or fall owing the Lyons Den monies for gambling. But she only match’s when unforeseen circumstances cause the unwanted ruin of a person in society or on the cusp of it. However, this is a male friend’s daughter that needs help and a Physician from Scotland that seems to be the answer to th ...more

The Black Widow was up to her machinations again and I loved every second! What does one do when one needs a daughter hastily married off? Go to the local matchmaker? Well yes, but so much more is involved!

Viola was in danger. At least that is what her father Malcolm said and it was due to his reputation. A solicitor on the surface and much more under cover. How else would be have the money he does? Now Malcolm is receiving notes threatening the life of his daughter. What to do? Marry her off o

A quick clean read but entertaining. Viola writes plays and whilst out is attacked by a couple of men. She is able to fit back but injured she meet a very drunk Duncan who insists she goes with him to the Lyon's den so that her eye wound can be looked over. Viola's dad is a solictor but also has been a successful gambler so he knows the Black widow so when he hears of the attack goes to see her to arrange a marriage for Viola. Miss Viola Black is a very unconventional young woman.  She writes plays,  and because that's a men only pastime she dresses as one.  Her father is also unconventional and has secret even Viola doesn't know.

Dr Duncan Neilson is normally a sober and responsible man,  mainly due to looking after his daughter and his work.  At this moment though he's visiting London and an old friend who's leading him into the bad habits of drinking and gambling.

This is an amusing tale filled with unusual chara

I love the character Mrs. Dove-Lyon. At least in this story of the series, she has a more than minor role. This series is written by different author’s, but Mrs. Dove-Lyon has some part in each story. All are stand alone.

The story dragged at times for me and most of the dialogue is in their heads/thoughts, than interaction with each other. The character’s needed more.

Lovemaking, outside of marriage with the bedroom door closed.

Touch of suspense, little on romance, no cheating, no cliff

Wonderful story and addition to the Lyons Den series

I really enjoyed this story. We are exposed a bit more to Bessie, the Black Widow of Whitehall. We see a bit of her background though she is still very much a mystery. The story of Duncan and Viola is well written and you begin to care for the characters and want them to succeed. Vella's father Malcolm is also a very interesting character that has some history and you want to see him find happiness as well. Great read, love the series.

Chloe and Lawrence make for a poignant and delightful tale.. Chloe is an heiress in her own right although it is not known by the ton or the general public. Laughter and love was the real reason for the best part of the story.
The Wynchester family of orphans are a comical group.
This book is filled with laughter and love and is one of the best I have read by Erica Ridley.
I received a complimentary copy of this title from Netgalley and am voluntary leaving this review.

Malcolm Black Has a daughter who has gone her own way most of her life. Now he has received threats that include her and he wants to protect her. Dr Duncan Neilson comes across her late at night as she is running away from thieves who have attacked her. She was dressed as a man but he saw right through it. With the help of the Black Widow they agree to wed. Viola is surprised her father seems to be an old friend of the Black Widow. Viola is kidnapped but which man will rescue her? Good read!

I really enjoy The Lyon's Den series but this book fell a little short. This book was super short which didn't give enough time to completely flesh out the story. The characters were underdeveloped which left you shaking your head at the story line. The plot of the story was confusing at times due to a lack of development. I think this could have been a great story as a full length or even a longer novella, but it was way too short. There just wasn't enough time to develop the story. ...more

Ran into your future

Viola writes plays and dresses as a young man! She had been accosted by some ruffians and literally ran into a drunk Duncan who assisted her! Duncan is a physician from Edinburgh who has visited the Lyons Den! Little does Viola and Duncan know their destiny is intertwined! The future will become all too clear in the Lyons Den!

Mrs. Dove-Lyon Makes Another Successful Match
A chance encounter with Duncan after Viola was assaulted, leads them both to the Lyon's Den. Mrs. Dove-Lyon observed their connection. With her father's agreement, the match is made. Neither Viola or Duncan objects and plans are made to flee to Scotland. Then Viola is kidnapped. It's up to Duncan, with a little help, to come to her rescue. An entertaining short read of Mrs. Dove-Lyon proving once again her success as a matchmaker.

This was another great addition to the Lyons den! Viola is an independent woman thanks to her father, however she’s in trouble.
Duncan is away from his home and visiting a friend when he’s pulled into her trouble.
Trouble= the Lyons den! Now they are left with a choice to marry, but of course it’s never that easy.

It’s good! There is a bit of a mystery with her father and threatening notes. Fatherly love, independent women, a doctor who can’t hold his liquor and so much more!

More like a short story than a novel. No real development of characters, nor detail in plot. Just boom, it’s over. Very disappointing. At least it didn’t take long to read.

An entertaining read

Okay a nice piece of fluff. Sometimes fluff is diverting. It was. But far too short not quite a novel not quite a novella.
