"I remember Time."
There are things everyone longs for, such as wanting to feel loved, to feel there's a place where we belong. To have a home.
This is what Dorian wants when he gets to his new home. After years of living in orphanages, and of hard work after he left it, he finally made it.
He bought his dream house. And he's moved into it.
And he met the ghost that lives there, the one of Claire, the woman who lived at the house before him.
"I have come to the house, at last, and it is every bit as dusty and forlorn as I had imagined it would be."
Set in the 1920s, this is a story of how two different people, one from the world of the living, the other from the Great Space, find not only each other, but also discover they were what the other was missing in their life.
The beautiful prose of S. Escobar makes this story a great example of how a love story should be written. In just fifty pages, she captures your mind and your heart and makes you invest in this relationship, and fear for what the outcome may turn out to be.
But like with all the great love stories, Love will find a way, even if it has to cross oceans to find the solace it so craves.
"For hours I sat on the edge of the bed - my eyes raw, red and staring. I waited to hear the piano play... a clack of the typewriter. Nothing."
Let’s just hope S. Escobar one day returns to this tale, if not to these characters, at least to the amazing setting she created. The Great Space still has secrets that must be unveiled.

A perfect morsel of a novelette that explores love and belonging. Escobar weaves more feeling in 55 pages than I've read in entire novels. Recommend if you're searching for a lovely little ghostly love story

Poetic Prose at its Finest
Stellar debut by S. Escobar. Although this is a short novella, the story felt so large and encompassing. I felt every speck of dust, every soft word spoken. Simply put, I was glued to every page.

“"It's interesting..." she continued. "There are some things which sap our energy, and others which grow it. You cannot observe this in the Great Space. Only in the physical world can emotions and art seemingly bend the laws of physics. Dance, music, love… these things take energy to produce, yet in doing so you're fulfilled with even more."
The way that “A Song Beyond Walls” was pitched to me was a genderbent version of “Casper, the friendly ghost” but if it was adults, and set in the 1930’s.
I SPRINTED to the author’s Instagram hoping to purchase a signed copy, because I quickly knew that this would become a favorite of mine, and it did.
One of the things I find most difficult about ghost stories, is that it doesn’t ever favor the non religious viewpoint. The story is always based on the singularity of the Judeo-Christian afterlife theory, which for someone who doesn’t subscribe to that ideology, makes it slightly less palatable.
S. Escobar’s allegory of what awaits us after this life is gentle, a breath of fresh air, and a warm hug from a trusted friend.
It’s easy to potentially see the “Instalove“ and choose not to enjoy it, but the transition from curiosity, to fear, to elation, to companionship, to grieving, it all felt incredibly believable and endearing.
This book is staying by my bedside as a reminder that love can tether each other through space and time.

"I feel I've seen you before. In my heart I saw you just as vividly as I am seeing you now."
S. Escobar made me fall in love with A song beyond wall from the very first scentence. The beginning where she describes the old clock and time mesmerized me. Her writing is so beautiful and elegant, describing a ghost interacting with the physical world.
This novella is a delight to read and S. Escobar's talent shines through every page making it atmospheric, full of hope and life and so present. I'm stunned at how she can put so much emotions and storytelling in only 55-pages. She literally stole my heart and left me breathless.

What a delectable little story.
In only 55 pages, the author conveys a whirlwind of emotions for the reader to sift through. From utter loneliness to fascination and love, to despair.
Claire and Dorian had all the reason in the world to feel what they felt - their wounds of loneliness closed by the connection they felt.
I was unsure where this book would go, how it would end, but was both surprised and pleased with the way it so beautifully wrapped up.

I picked up this ghost story novelette because, well, Halloween and because I love ghost stories. It did not disappoint! Filled with beautifully written poetic prose, it was one of the most gorgeous books I’ve ever read. I was compelled to read certain lines a second time to savor them. I found myself clutching a dusty stairwell railing in suspense as I walked deeper and deeper into the story, wondering what was going to happen. I felt all the emotions Claire and Dorian felt. It has everything you hope a ghost story would have—spooky elements, a gorgeous mansion, compelling characters and a cute love story. I really hope the author expands on the story like she said she would in the back of the book, but even if she doesn’t, I was left completely satisfied. Either way, I can’t wait to read more of her stuff.

There's something about the softness of the prose that lends to the easy reading of this novelette. A gothic tale that takes the "haunted house" or "ghost trapped in their haunted mansion" tropes, and doesn't so much subvert it, as it does give the idea a different angle in which to view the story.
It's not uncommon for me to complain about the length of these novellas and novelletes hindering the story, but that doesn't apply here. In fact, it's just the opposite. The length provides a structure that flows elegantly from beat to beat, chapter to chapter. Escobar does not linger on needless details, instead relishing in giving us the emotions felt -for this is very much a story that hinges on emotions, and demands that we relate to understand- between our cast of two.
It's a beautiful story, one that takes the readers through a nice capture of something sweet. Like the ghost in this house, the story lingers with us, giving us that tiny bit of hope and desire for a happy ending.

Oh goodness, what a delight this story is! Sumptuously written, and I mean sumptuous—the way Stephanie shapes her prose is a thing of beauty. The love story in this is sweet, quick and powerful, and the ending is absolutely perfect. If you are after a quick but beautiful read, give this one a try. Well done, Stephanie.

I have never read a more perfect novella. Each plot point. Each character. Each chapter. Each sentence. Each word. I was beguiled start to finish. It OOZES mood and feels as ephemeral as its heroine. From the very first page it was all I’ve ever wanted in a ghost story. An effortless five stars I would round up to ten if I could.

Right from the first sentence, I was immediately hooked. I'm one of those oddballs who keeps intrusively thinking, "Wow, I really love this," while I'm reading something really good, and I circled back to that thought nearly every single paragraph. The emotions, the prose, and the characters were all wonderful, and I was SO impressed by the unique take on the spirit world. I'll admit I haven't really read many ghost-centric romances (only two come to mind, and they were both YA stories), but Escobar really went above and beyond with her storytelling in regards to a ghost interacting with the physical world.
One of my favorite methods of communication between Claire and Dorian was Dorian's typewriter. Once she'd started being able to touch physical items again, she was able to speak to him through typing, and I found it to be an effective and creative method of conversation. It really allowed a deeper look into the characters' backgrounds as well, and without feeling exposition-y.
I don't want to spoil anything more, because this is a novella (55 pages), and you should definitely see for yourself what all the fuss is about! I easily read it in one sitting, and in an hour, give or take. I can't say how long exactly, since I never took my eyes from the pages. One more thing I will say, however, is that I got a literal chill from the last line. This story was so beautiful!

Such a wonderful little novella - it stole my heart and made me want to cry. I wish there had been more, I wanted to delve deeper into their story.
I read this in my own, slightly dilapidated, victorian home and the story came to life around me. I could almost imagine it all taking place right in front of me.

I fell in love with this book the moment I first saw the painting that was the inspiration. I could not wait to read it! The cover didn’t hurt, either! I’m pleased to say that the story surpassed all my expectations. Tender, evocative, and utterly captivating! It’s now a treasured addition to my library and I know I’ll read it again and again.

Girl, I need to BREATHE! This book is gorgeous, enchanting, a complete wardrobe makeover begging to happen (the crimson gown?! Yes, please), and a love story that skips the drama between humans + instead renders Time and Space the ultimate villain. It’s beautiful. I am so in awe of Stephanie Escobar’s magical storytelling and prose, extending a will-o-wisp hand into her fantasy world. Cannot recommend A Song Beyond Walls highly enough!

I devoured this. I have a weak spot for lyrical, gothic writing, and Escobar had such a delightfully creepy/beautiful way of phrasing things. The romance was, of course, touching. It was bittersweet and achy. I loved every too-short moment of it.

This is a delightful morsel of a story that I absolutely desire the full course meal.
The different POVs here were wonderful insights to the characters feelings and in such a short tale we find ourselves in a multitude of feelings.
The whimsy of Claire as a ghost and Dorian questioning all he knows, it’s a beautiful concept.
I loved the expansion of what it could feel like to BE a ghost.

I was mesmerized by this beautiful love story and loved the overall setting of this book. I can definitely see myself reading this again. It is the perfect gothic romance. I highly recommend.

First of all, I must admit that I knew I’d love this book. The premise is that which sings to my heart and has since I was a child. A lonely soul who has wandered his life searching for his heart in an abandoned house? A ghost who is trapped in the non corporal particles of of The Great Space and Time, inconsequential and forgotten? Yes please. Escobar weaves a tale of an entire universe within the sunlit spectacle of dust motes of Claire & Dorian’s house.
Escobar’s title of Time, revered as though a deity, holding doctrine, entranced me from the first pages.
“…what was it…which collected my unraveled particles all the tighter? Was it my mere will? Or could it have been his growing awareness of my existence?” In its literal reading, Claire’s musing is wonder & beauty. As a metaphor, how better to describe the way we bloom and evolve in the face of love and happiness. I felt a hundred pages of prose in each page of ASBW and while I was sad to come to the end of this novelette, I was anything but unsatisfied. Haunted, yes, as every beautiful tale leaves me. Yet not shaken nor cold. A bit like I’ve fallen in love with a ghost.

This beautifully written gothic novelette has simply left me in awe. Escobar’s attention to detail paints a full picture, utilising all the senses, as she allows us to peer into the perception of an unraveled entity wading between space and physical. I had no idea that 55 pages could steal away my heart and leave me speechless. But, somehow, Escobar has managed to do just that.
Beyond the love and connection within this story is an eloquent gesture for the simple truth to “be here now.”

beautifully written, marvelous, and intimate, read. The prose was delicate and meaningful. The love and longing felt between Claire and Dorian is palpable. Just a gorgeous novelette with characters that leave a lasting impression long after the book is finished. If you like lyrical prose,

Stunningly beautiful, heartfelt, a 55 page poem or love letter to Life and Death that I didn’t even know I needed.
The love story of Dorian and Claire could have gone on forever and I still wouldn’t have been prepared to leave them, but perhaps leaving the very last page is also a sort of Unraveling.
I can’t wait to see what this brilliant author writes next!

A Song Beyond Walls is an absolutely sublime work! A wonderful story of love and melancholy about the affection of one discarnate soul's affection for a mortal. Stephanie is a wonderfully skilled writer who has created such an amazing depiction of the afterlife, or rather Great Space. The whole tale is beautiful and beautifully told.

I stumbled upon this short and sweet story by accident, but boy am I glad I did. It was the perfect cozy read on Halloween. Her vivid imagery and emotionally charged descriptions evoke a fierce yearning, long after the final page. She infused so much life in a story under 50 pages long. I eagerly await anything this author releases next.
