So I've been reading a lot of sci-fi/fantasy lately. And, knowing myself as I do, I am aware that sometimes it takes me a while to pull my mental space out of these bizarre and wonderful worlds, and back into real life. During that difficult transition period, I sometimes have problems getting into books that don't have swords and magic and robots and lasers and demons.

So I think to myself, how about a good old-timey 'oat opera' to ease the shift? And I am SO GLAD that I did.

This book is awesome, and the main character Yakima Henry is troubled and noble and near-invincible. And that's exactly what i want, what I need, from a Western novel protagonist.

The author paints a grand picture of both setting and characters, bullets ricochet and dig furrows through flesh, whiskey is served by comely whores, and horses' snorts pepper the air.

This series is the perfect way to almost come back to the real world.

3 1/2 stars.

This should have called Faith the Whore because her character had the most growth and the plot mainly revolved around her. Yakima Henry was just kind of along for the ride. That's ok, though, because she was a pretty cool character anyway.

There was some good action here and a bit of sex. I wouldn't go so far to label it a "sextern" (like Longarm or Lone Star), but it is still there in case that would sway you from or to reading this. I also liked how Yakima Henry wasn't an invincible he-man like many other Western 'series protagonists. He is tough as nails, but he doesn't magically repel bullets like Frank Morgan from The Last Gunfighter series seems to do somehow.

Overall, this was a lot of fun and I will definitely be continuing this series.

Wow. After a bare page of setup, the action kicked into high gear in this first volume of the Yakima Henry Saga and it never let up. Yet, the author, Brandvold, sill found time and space to develop both the character of Yakima and the woman--Faith--who he falls in love with. Well done. Highly enjoyable and a quick read.

Worth it for this line: "What kind of future could there be in this world for a half-breed and a whore?"

Peter Brandvold – Yakima Henry – The Lonely Breed – Reviewed 4/20/21 – Read 4/19/20

Yakima Henry is the loneliest breed of men in the Old West—he’s half-white, half-Cheyenne Indian.
It’s not easy being a half-breed on the western frontier. Belonging to neither race, Yakima finds himself at odds with both. Often fleeing a hangman’s rope, the lonely half-breed roams the mountains and plains, looking for…what?
Hell, not even Yakima knows. A home, maybe? The love of a good woman? He finds both for a time only after having hell to pay to get them…but for a man like Yakima, with a reputation as one of the most formidable gunfighters on the entire frontier and having left a trail of dead men behind him…as well as broken hearts…none of the usual comforts are his for long.
What did I like? Being a member of this half-white/half red world, I could relate to the problems that faced Yakima and his search for belonging. Fortunately for me, I have the coloring for one of my bloodlines and did not have to go through all the problems that he did. Of course, I also was not born in the same time era either, there is a little more tolerance for the half breeds of my world. I enjoy reading and living in the west with Peter Brandvold's character of Yakima. Being strong, good-looking, lovable with a heart full of gold, reaching out to help others beyond their own needs.

What will you like? A well-written and edited book with a strong storyline that just reaches out and takes hold of you from the first to the last page. Characters that are amazing and bold with the ability to have you either hate or love with strong emotions. The research again shows that Peter knows what he is writing about. The descriptions take you right into the story and make you comfortable. The action is incredible with many either making you cry or gasp but either way, you're on the edge of the seat while Yakima deals with the problems. Wonderful and highly recommended read.

I read another book in the Yakima Henry series, and wanted to read the first one, which this may or may not be. Are there bodice rippers for men? This story has so much sex in it with manly, long-haired men with narrow waists and muscles on muscles and beauteous whores it got a little silly. No, a lot silly.

Great story, great author, great read. What more could you ask for? I've had this on my Kindle for a while and never gotten around to reading it. Now that I have, the rest of the series beckons.
Bad guys you love to hate and worse ones to hate more. Peter Brandvold weaves a great tale with fantastic characters.
If you want to know more, then buy the book.

This is Book 1 of the series featuring Yakima Henry, the half-breed, who manages to survive trouble, hardships and the position of an outcast among most people. He works hard when hired, trained a colt to be a magnificent stallion named Wolf, and, he irritates everyone. He seems to be a misfit among humans but to tell the truth, I loved him. He had to fight his way through life with little or no respect but he manages a friend here or there along the way. He kills the bad guys but in this book, he is a protector of a special gal. Loved the story-line and I’m onto Book 2. Thanks for a great read. My hubby and I share the love of a good western book.

Well Written

Yakima Henry Is a half breed, discriminated against in the prevalent world. His fighting skills enable him to be underestimated by his opponents. He becomes a prostitute's protector as evil men try to harm and kill her. Although the plot was good, some scenes are dark, with the killing of defenseless women, which underscores the evil of some men. The romance was interesting but ended with the stereotypical western hero riding off into the sunset after providing for the safety of the heroine.

Man’s Destiny

Early west dictated who, what nationality, and quality of person as to who was accepted or admired? Indians who were here in this new and undiscovered land were disregarded as too savage and not intelligent enough to belong
as whites felt that they didn’t meet their requirements of existences? So as white man pushed farther into the undiscovered?? they pushed Indians into non-existence! So goes whites pushing, eradicating a nation of human beings who had existed here for many, many years!!!

Write by the number story. Sex a plenty. Violence, oh yeah. Never was a man shot at and chased by so many men who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn or in this case a man standing a few feet away. Bad language, don't worry, there is plenty. Actual story not so much. if this was a movie, I'd have fallen asleep halfway thru. I like Peter Branvold usually, but this one not so much. The rest of this series is safe from me.

A western novel??

It seems as though the author could not decide what type of story he wanted to tell here. A bit of the old West, A bit of "woke" America, some psychic energy and a little stumbling between dull and entertaining.

This is a must read, action galore. Shootouts, horse thieves, and plenty of sex. I really wanted to see where it all began with Yakima by reading his 1st book. It's very hard to backtrack on book series. Many of his books don't come in large print so I cannot read in order.

Horrible language. Very rated R for a western. If you like that sort of thing go for it. Constant taking the Lords name in vain. Sex and Rape. That’s just the first few chapters. I like my westerns cleaner.

It is frightening so many people think this is a good read. One dimensional people engaged in one dimensional violence and one dimensional sex wrapped in a one dimensional plot.

First, I didn’t finish it which is somewhat rare for me. The writing style just didn’t seem to flow and the old west jargon seemed mechanical.

The Lonely Breed doesn't break any new ground. It doesn't look to push any boundaries. But it succeeds at being an entertaining romp of a western with unexpected twists as it continues. An interesting first book in a series, intriguing enough to be worth its follow-up.

You don't mess with Yakima Henry the kung fu half breed of the old west. This is pure old fashioned action/adventure with the good guy loner overcoming the odds and getting the girl. It does what is sets out to do and is enjoyable for it.

The bar brawl scenes were well done- I could almost see an old Western movie playing. The main character had a lot going on, and the struggles seemed realistic. The story itself was not my cup of tea.

Interesting Western with a part Yakima Indian part white parentage. As a half Breed he is looked down on and works at bottom end jobs. Then all hell breaks loose and he shows his mettle
