Alecia Preen is living in poverty and desperate to make a better life for herself. Having moved to a new area for new beginnings after being disowned by her family, money was fast running out. She is struggling to make ends meet. With the intention of charging lonely men online for her services, Alecia realises she can supplement her income by being unscrupulous. In meeting Jake Parker he requests that she role-plays as a psychiatrist, but he makes her aware of an underground millionaires playground called Sordida. He warns her to stay away. As Alecia’s curiosity gets the better of her, she is amazed by the wealth and decadence on offer. Sordida is not the club she had anticipated because behind the legendary name lurks a very dark secret. A secret that could cost her everything. He pays by the hour and Alecia pays in ways she had never imagined. A gripping thriller novella with a nail-biting twist. Readers of K.L. Slater and T.M. Logan will not be able to put this one down. I’ve read a previous book by this author so was looking forward to reading this story.
Alecia is on her own and trying to survive. She’s thrown a curveball and starts working as an escort. I really liked this storyline with suspense and erotica running through it.
I found this to be a well written gripping read. I’m looking forward to reading more from this author in the future.
Glimmer of Hope by J.A Andrews is a little different to his psychological thrillers that I have read previously. Saying that, it doesn't mean it is any less addictive for me anyway. This book is more on the edge, by that I mean he has created a thriller that is exciting and entertaining by being risque. Maybe a book not everyone would enjoy due to the inclusion of sex and swingers clubs, escorts, drugs and everything around these things. Alecia Preen is struggling, she has moved for a fresh start and money is scarce. Out of neccessity she begins to charge lonely men for her services online. She meets Jake Parker, who has her role-playing as a psychiatrist and she learns about a club for the wealthy, Sordida, but warns her away. Alecia, upon visiting the club finds the opulence and decadence of the wealthy a place she is pulled too. Sordida has a great influence on her, not all good ones. She learns a lot about herself while living the Sordida life. There are some very realistic role-playing scenes in Glimmer of Hope, so realistic I could see them in my head and feel the emotions of Jake too. J.A Andrews is an excellent writer and this story is so vivid in it's telling that you lose yourself for the time you are reading. It isn't just about sex and drugs though, there is a mysterious Mr X who creates the mystery for this story. This is the final thread to the web the author has spun into one of his usual shocking ends. Expect the unexpected and enjoy the ride! Thank you to Rachel's Random Resources and J.A.Andrews for my copy of this excellent jaw dropping read so I could give you my thoughts today.
This was a book that I don’t quite know how to classify...thriller is the best I can describe without spoilers but there are some content warnings listed in my review below.
When the book first starts we meet Alicia, who after moving to a new city and barely surviving decides to get into the escort business after seeing some ladies in a bar. One of her regular clients, Jake, who likes for her to just play act as a “sexy psychiatrist “ tells her about this swingers club called Sordida but gives her very vague information. Alicia, thinking she an make big money decides to track down this “club” and that’s when things take a turn. Sordida hides a very dark secret and how much will Alicia pay for her curiosity and need for money?
With escorts, swingers clubs, people being used for sex and drug use, this may not be a book for everyone, but is an enjoyable thriller if these are not trigger risks for the reader. This is a departure from the straight psychological thrillers this author writes from what I have seen, but the sexual aspects were interval to the plot and not just for the sake of a sex scene. It was a quick read at just over 200 pages and one I read in a day. I have not read any other books by this author but I plan on checking out some others.
I rate this 3.75 out of 5 and thank Rachels Random Resources and author JA Andrews for the review copy of this book.
First, I want to thank J.A. Andrews and Rachel’s Random Resources for providing this book for me so I can bring you this review.
J.A. Andrews opens up and shows us his spicy side in Glimmer of Hope. This is unlike any of his past psychological novels he has written in the past. But oh it was so good. Now if he could combine the two genres together that would be mind blowing.
Warning: this book may not be for everyone’s reading tastes. It talks about escorts, swingers clubs, being used for sex, drug use, etc.
There were some incredibly written sexual scenarios written into the book. Scenes that played into my head like a movie. The same scene I could feel the emotion and betrayal that Jake felt.
I enjoyed the storyline of Alicia learning about herself through the new lifestyle she was living at Soridia.
How Ironic that Alicia needed a Diet Coke to get her caffeine fix in. I hear it is J.A.’s drink of choice too.
There was a mystery to solve in the book as to who the famous Mr. X was.
J.A. Is known for his climatic, shocking, jaw dropping ending. Glimmer of Hope’s ending will have you speechless! It is oh so good!
Alecia is an interesting character. I admired her but didn't like her much to be fair which for me, made the reading experience more fascinating. She's obviously a clever lady with qualifications etc but wants the money and lavish lifestyle without putting in much work. While working as an escort she catches a whiff of what seems like a winner but is it more than she can handle? I found the plot intense as I could see things through Alecia’s eyes but there was a sinister vibe throughout the whole thing that just gave a sense of foreboding and despite her not being the most likeable, I desperately wanted to protect her from what I felt was coming. I’m not a huge reader of erotica but the sexual aspect of the novel was done brilliantly, and it fit well within the plot. It was not gratuitous and unnecessary and for me it played like scenes from a saucy film. The swinging scene is an unusual topic for a mainstream novel, and I found it fascinating and enthralling. A gripping and fast paced thriller that is hard to put down and will have you gripped until the ending, which is well worth the wait.
Glimmer of Hope is a thriller that will keep readers on their toes. The story follows Alecia, a woman living in poverty. She's been disowned, if you will, by her family and is trying to make her own way in the world. She's not succeeding too well, though. But one night at the bar where she's supposed to meet her work friends (they stand her up) gives Alecia a glimpse into a potential new career that may just be the answer to all her money woes. Being an escort seems easy enough, right? Alecia's main client is a man named Jake. Jake is a bit droll, but when he tells her about a secret club, her curiosity is piqued. Jake warns her the club isn't safe, but Alecia ignores his warning. Why would she give up the potential to make a ton of money? But Alecia should have listened to Jake. The story is pretty decent overall. It does take a little bit to get going, but once Alecia gets involved with the club, that's when things pick up. It's a bit of a tense, taut thriller that will have you wondering if Alecia will be able to get herself out of the darkness she finds herself in. 3.5 stars.
Another good read from mr andrews. In my personal opinion I didn’t enjoy it as much as the last one I read by this author. Also I was disappointed to see mistakes throughout the book with names being wrong and occasionally seeing the main characters name written as America instead. Now these are small mistakes but sometimes I had to go back to work out what it was meant to say. Just little details that could have been prevented if it had been proof read.
Glimmer of Hope wasn’t the book I was expecting it to be. In reality, it was so much better! With a fast-paced, intriguing narrative and an unexpected plot twist at the end, it’s definitely a novella for fans of thrillers. This book is the first I have read by J. A. Andrews, but I would definitely read his other two based on Glimmer of Hope.
One word of warning is that the book is NSFW. I had anticipated from the synopsis that there may be some parts of the book that had mature content. If I’m perfectly honest, had I known the prevalence of it in the book, it would have made me think twice before picking it up. It’s not really my cup of tea, but in moderation, I can handle it. Despite that, I still really enjoyed the novella. I only mention this to make potential readers aware of it so they can choose whether it’s their cup of tea or not. As I said, it isn’t mine, but it still worked for me so it might for you too. Either way, you can make an informed decision.
The main character Alecia is a young woman, down on her luck with life after starting again away from her family. Money is tight and stacking shelves at the local supermarket hardly provides a cushy lifestyle. Those personal circumstances are very easy to relate to, and the poverty cycle is something we are all familiar with. When Alecia is presented with an opportunity to earn more money and sustain a better quality of life, of course, she takes it. The events that follow and the consequences are far from expected and spiral out of her control.
Alecia is a likeable character and I loved her determination and spirit to better her life. Whilst they are not choices I would ever make, I can appreciate that she is being opportunistic where she can to try to get herself out of a grotty bedsit and into a place of her own. It shouldn’t be too much to ask... and it’s no more ambitious, greedy or selfish than the rest of us.
Glimmer of Hope was a reasonably quick read for me. The narrative and pace of the novella had a good flow, so it was easy to get engrossed and read chapter after chapter and lose awareness of time. At 205 pages, it’s approachable for all readers to pick up.
