This was... Not bad. Obviously, the Power Pack's heyday was in the late 80s. Their original series ran for a long, long time. It has been a pet project of mine for years to collect the original run. Then sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who read their miniseries from 2000. While Alex and Julie, the oldest two, have had adventures with other teams for the last few years, and even Katie has made the occasional --if perhaps jokey-- appearance, Jack has largely been absent for This was... Not bad. Obviously, the Power Pack's heyday was in the late 80s. Their original series ran for a long, long time. It has been a pet project of mine for years to collect the original run. Then sometimes I feel like I'm the only person on the planet who read their miniseries from 2000. While Alex and Julie, the oldest two, have had adventures with other teams for the last few years, and even Katie has made the occasional --if perhaps jokey-- appearance, Jack has largely been absent for decades. Jack's only appearance since the 2000 miniseries was an issue of Civil War II, where he did in fact use his powers and costume, around 2015.

This miniseries tries to address the broad strokes of the team's history, while also providing enough exposition and child-safe content to make the series accessible to new child fans.

However, the whole "Back to Basics" feel of this issue already makes it clear that some of the more obscure history is going to stay lost. Like how in the 2000 miniseries we learned that Katie is a technical genius who skipped a bunch of grades. In this issue, we see Katie --badly-- drawing a handmade comic book, and acting very juvenile. There is no indication that the writers are aware of the fact she is supposed to be a genius.

Then this issue ends with the Power Pack surrounded. This should be something of a non-issue, because in the 2000 miniseries Julie learned she could teleport. Julie has had many appearances since the 2000 miniseries. She was in Future Foundation, the Loners, and she made guest appearances in Runaways. In none of her many appearances has she teleported. I don't have high hopes that next issue of Power Pack is going to show her using this power, either. It hasn't been "retconned" so much as just forgotten. Marvel writers didn't read the 2000 miniseries, so they're unaware of the status quo changes.

Oh yeah. And Jack learned how to harden his mist into force fields in the 2000 miniseries. That also has not come up since, and I don't have high hopes that it's going to come up now.

I feel like this 2020 miniseries is going to be better for nostalgia than for bringing in new fans. We shall see. Oh, and this whole "Outlawed" concept is already stupid. It's already illegal for children to function as superheroes. There are curfew laws preventing children from being out past certain times, there are laws against assault, battery, reckless conduct, and causing a public disturbance. There are laws against truancy (since many of their adventures take them out of school), and laws against property destruction. Just with the fight we saw Power Pack have against the Boogeyman in this issue, they could be arrested for about a dozen crimes (mostly misdemeanors, but a couple felonies). There is no need to create a separate "Kamala's Law" saying that it's illegal for children to function as superheroes.

Final point-- I know that the continuity of the Powers parents was messed up, hence the Holiday Special needing to retcon the end of the series. But how are we back to the parents not knowing the kids are superheroes? They somehow learned off-panel before the 2000 series. More recently (as in a week or two ago), the parents came to the Fantastic Four to get Alex and Julie back from space. They knew. They were physically present when Alex and Julie walked out of the ship in costume, in the most recent issue of Fantastic Four.

Well, this was wonderful.

As a long time Power Pack fan I was a little concerned that this would be a total reset, ignoring Alex's time with the Future Foundation and Julie's coming out as gay, but was pleasantly surprised that these are both covered. Sure, it doesn't cover every minute detail in Power Pack history, but I'm a great believer that continuity exists to serve the story and not the other way around.
