From NYT bestselling author Thea Harrison comes the explosive conclusion to The Unseen!

When Dragos and Pia move to the Other land of Rhyacia, they hope starting a new life will bring safety and freedom to their family, especially their young baby, Niall. And at first their new home seems perfect… but looks are deceiving.

Beneath Rhyacia’s idyllic façade an ancient, malevolent force lurks, waiting for the right opportunity to break free of its cage. When that opportunity comes, it strikes with devastating accuracy.

While Dragos has never backed down from a fight, he’s also never encountered an enemy like this one before. How can he fight a foe who doesn’t have a body? A foe who can invade and turn his own mind against him?

How can Dragos protect his family, when at any moment one of them may become the enemy?

As Dragos and Pia race against time to fight this unseen menace, they must also acknowledge a terrifying truth—when anyone can become the enemy, no one can be trusted.

An adversary who can trap the dragon poses a threat to everyone in Rhyacia, and that means no one is safe…

I write paranormal romance, urban fantasy, and other stuff. I taught myself to read when I was four. That was around the time I tried to ride my tricycle to work. I wasn't sure where work was, but I knew it had to be interesting if people went there every day. Now I combine my love of books with work, and I don't have to ride my tricycle to get there. My Elder Races series began May, 2011. You can also find me on Twitter and Facebook!

TITLE: THE ADVESARY
AUTHOR: Thea Harrison
SERIES: Elder Races #9.95, Chronicles of Rhyacia #2
RELEASE DATE: July 26, 2021
GENRE: PNR/UF
RATING: 5 Stars
CLIFFHANGER: No

It's been a minute since the last time I got to spend time with Pia and Dragos. Let me bring you up to speed. A year ago, Thea released the first part of a four parts serial, THE UNSEEN. A couple of weeks ago the author let us know that this will release as a duet. This was me when I read about it:

Because Pia and Dragos. I can't get enough of them. But then I held THE ADVERSARY in my hands and let me tell you, it couldn't be more awesome. It has the fabulous Elder Races feel, a lot of Pia and Dragos goodness, lots of Liam, some of our most beloved characters from the series and a lot of magic, action and tension. I was glued to the pages, the adversary is one of the nastiest enemies our heroes (the whole bunch of them) have had to fight. That thing is a piece of work and Pia's snark brought comic relief from the tension.
The thing possessing Dragos had walked his evil cooties through the house. As soon as she had her mate back, she was going to turn on the complaining wife faucet and let that sucker run.

Dragos had to make a horrible, horrible call that affects his son for years to come, I suppose and I think we'll read about this in future Liam books. Which, btw., alludes the epilogue to. It sounds like we'll get a couple of those and I couldn't be happier. This young man has grown into a proud dragon, who still has a lot to learn but has Pia's level-headedness and Dragos's fierceness. So this will be interesting.

Being so desperately in love with someone and mating with them—it came with a heavy price. And he paid it gladly, and he would keep paying it again and again...

I loved to see how far Dragos has come. From the dragon who was ruthless to someone...OK OK, still as ruthless but now he has a conscience and almost seems...human. Dragos and Pia's love is going strong and while they have moved into the phase where you are more aware of the flaws of your partner, they don't mind. Pia is so wise and yet so snarky about it. The love for one another is in every word.
"I never knew what loneliness was until you came into my life and taught me what it was like to love someone.”

This concludes this novella duet and I honestly can't see how Thea could have made it more than two parts. Oh OK, of course she could have but what I mean is that she packed so much in these two shorties and wrapped it up with a bow. If you're not familiar with this series I urge you to start at the beginning. These books need to be read in order. But I promise you won't regret it.

THE ADVERSARY officially releases on July 26, but you can already grab your copy on the author's page.

The Adversary continues were The Unseen left off. Its a novella in the Elder Races series by Thea Harrison.

In The Unseen we ended on a cliffhanger, but with The Adversary it wraps up the story ARC that was started in The Unseen.

This novella switches between Pia and Dragos POV. We see Pia trying to keep it together thou she does lose it now and then and we see Dragos trying to fight the Adversary. We see how devious this adversary is that has possessed Dragos and that no one is safe from this foe.

I enjoyed the story, concluding the ARC, and diving back into the world. I also love seeing old characters make appearances. If you haven’t read previous books in the series then you will be lost on who all these characters are and their relationships.

There was only one thing that bothered me. It was the role all the old characters played in the overall ARC. Yes, they are powerful. Yes, they are friends and family. Yet, the only role I see with them showing up in these two novellas was to maybe add moral support for Dragos and Pia and to help if things go bad. I like that they show up, but they didn’t add to the story or do anything, but add there two cents. It felt like the author was trying to cram all these previous characters in, just to please the fans.

I appreciated this novella and like visiting with Pia and Dragos, but I feel it’s time to put closer on them and let them have their HEA. I feel its time to explore other characters.

The Adversary is full of twists, turns, action, and adventure. If you enjoy a vast expanding world and unique intelligent characters then I recommend the Elder Races series.

Rated: 3.5 Stars

Not gonna lie. I could read dozens upon dozens of books about Dragos and Pia. It looks like we’re gearing up to see Liam take center stage, but hopefully Dragos and Pia will continue to have adventures of their own.

Originally the author had plans apparently to bring out several novellas but I feel wisely she has decided to just write two episodes of this story. Happily that means this does not have a cliff hanger ending which sadly marred the previous book The Unseen for this reader. I'm one of those readers who adores anything about Pia and Dragos so for me this book is perfect.
Previously having relocated to the pocket dimension of Rhyacia the couple and their family had heard strange reports of entities. Whilst investigating Dragos became an unwilling host of a very sinister creature and readers were left screaming for more ! Now we rejoin Pia as she waits for the usurpers next move and luckily Dragos has been around a long time and knows so much more about magic than most . As he battles to regain control of his body Pia learns a whole lot more about who else they share their new home with and just what the danger within Dragos is capable of.
For this reader when this author writes about this family every word is magical . Dragos is the ultimate predator but his devotion to Pia and his children simply elevates him. Do not mistake me though as Pia doesn't weaken him at all and she is many things but in no way do I see her as prey. The respect and love they share shines through on every page. No matter what is thrown at them they battle on tirelessly. We do get familiar characters appearing here and there is even time for brief respites of humour but for me Pia yet again shone so brightly as she worked her own magic on those around her.
This voluntary take is of an advanced copy and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair

This continued from the previous book which ended on a cliffhanger. The dangerous entity they discovered in their new lands continues to reek havoc in an effort to regain control on Rhyacia. Dragos and Liam are both hurt as well as Pia. With help from the unseen and their friends they were finally victorious.

I love any book that gives me Dragos and Liam time so this was a definite win for me. The actual plot though didn't quite pan put as I'd hoped. If felt like parts were missing, I'd have liked to learn more about the unseen and the land they've decided to inhabit. The new members of the community were also just tossed in without feeling like a community.... I actually don't even know what happened to the bad guy....idk if I skimmed and missed it but what happened to him when he was forced out of Liam's body?
Anyways hopefully this series continues and I get some answers.... For now I've got nothing but love for Dragos and Pis

Do you know what is a sign of a great paranormal author? When you forget that shifters aren’t real. You forget that dragons don’t really exist and worth a billion dollars. You forget that there really isn’t an otherland. You just focus on the real emotions and drama. I always get immersed when I read Thea Harrison’s books and this one is no different. If you love the Elder series, you will appreciate coming back to part 2 of Dragos and Pia’s adventure in the other land. It’s great to welcome back the beloved crew and get a peek in the life of Peanut. If you haven’t begun the Elder series, this is not the place to start, but it is certainly a great place to end (or hopefully just pause.)

The Adversary is thrilling, exciting, and magical. It's everything I've come to love about Dragos and Pia as a couple in this incredible world that Ms Harrison has created. Riveting. Compelling.

I'm so happy to be back in the world of the Elder Races, and Dragos and Pia after a long hiatus by Ms Harrison. Not complaining. I get it, life and health happens and one needs to take care of oneself. Getting a book by a favorite author while wonderful is secondary to other more important things. Ms Harrison has not skipped a beat with this book. When I first read that it was going to be scaled down from four novellas to two, I was a bit bummed because, ya know, less books, but hey, Ms Harrison knocked it out of the park. Her writing is as wonderful as ever and I felt like I got a complete, satisfying story, with enough left open in the world for more stories to come in the future should she choose to write more, life and health permitting. I am grateful for the effort she put in to get this book out.

I loved having both Pia and Dragos' point of view in this story. Pia showed incredible strength under strain and stress, and proved that she too, is a leader and can make tough decisions and choices when she's missing a vital part of her. I've loved Pia from the start, but I've adored the way she's grown and developed as a character, making her truly worthy as mate to the Great Beast.

Being in Dragos' head is something else. He's so old, so Powerful, so majestic. It was fascinating to see that wily mind work and watching his intellect work through a problem. It shone a light on his incredible magical abilities and brought home the fact that there's no one quite like him in the world. Dragos continues to be one of my all time favorite characters and book boyfriends. This reminds me that I need to reread Dragon Bound again for the umpteenth time.

I'm grateful for the chance to read this book, grateful to Ms Harrison for putting in the effort to deliver something to her fans and to close out the cliffhanger from the previous book. This story closes out the Rhyacia story arc but leaves open many possibilities for the future. I can't wait to read more about Liam and how he conquers the world if that ever comes to pass.

Absolutely a heart-stopping, breathtaking, gripping, and mesmerizing story ever. Just having Dragos, Pia, Niall, and yes ~Liam, showed up has been more than enough to earned all the stars in the entire galaxy for this novella. Adding on the star-studded supporting cast of heroes & heroines of the previous books from the Elder Races series ~ made me feel like I was in my reading heaven.

I was very literal with my heart-stopping comment. No spoiler ~ but please imagine Dragos ~ Liam ~ and Pia ~ in that context!

The villain in the title ➡️ The Adversary was indescribably creepy, nasty, and yeah ~ worthy of The Great Beast Dragos's immense/immeasurable power! Please pick up The Chronicles of Rhyacia and be mesmerized by Dragos, his family, and his universe!

Wishing there were more than two novellas in this Beyond Words Fantastic Chronicles of Rhyacia.

Sharing one of my favorite scenes: (the final scene ➡️ a foretell of a possible spin-off? please?)

“I will never fall prey like that again,” Liam said. “And that brings me to why I asked you here. . . I want you to teach me everything you can. Every spell, every trick, every way there is to kill . . . "

It's hard to review this separately from the first novella in this duology (The Unseen, which I just reviewed), but I wanted to take this space to say: I love that Thea Harrison writes her heroine's arc in this duology in such a way that we get to see Pia being incredibly brave and tough in truly terrifying and overwhelming situations - but then also we get to see her collapse into entirely believable hysterics afterwards, reacting to trauma in a way that feels (on the mild side of) believable for how people would actually react, rather than just sweeping forward triumphantly after getting through it. It's really satisfying - and this whole duology was so much fun.

Note: This ebook isn't out at most stores yet, but I bought my own copy on the author's website, where it is already available for sale.

Oh. My. Goodness. Every time I slip back into Dragos and Pia's world it hits me so hard how much I genuinely enjoy the various and sundry Elder Races in all their dangerous, messy glory. Dragos and Pia will forever hold a special place in my heart because they were the first and they are the royal family of this slightly feral, always crafty mass of folks. (Although some of the Elder Races peeps might disagree with the royal family part, but THEY ARE IN MY HEAD!)

When last we left Pia and Dragos, Pia had made a hard decision. This book picks up directly from that point and Pia's practically unmoored at what she's ordered done to Dragos. But Dragos is powerful and sly and he's not about to let an invisible enemy win when it's his family's safety that's on the line. So he plots and plans and does what a dragon does to free himself.

Meanwhile, Pia and those she trusts are racing to find a way to free Dragos while also keeping everyone else in the settlement safe. It's a tough task made tougher by the fact that few among them can even sense the entity threatening them.

A boatload of power, a threat unlike anything they've faced before, danger no one saw coming, and the next step in Liam's growth as a power player amongst the Wyr. Times are changing and everyone's settling into new roles. My love for this series continues unabated. SO GOOD!

Finally we have the conclusion of the drama that threatened to take Pia’s mate from her forever that begin with their move to the Otherworld they planned to make home. This series began long ago with Pia and Dragos finding love in their surprising mating and we have gotten glimpses of their lives together as they mated, ruled their Demesne, and birthed and raised their children. This spin-off is just the short story of the new drama in their new Otherworld home. In the previous book (The Unseen) they arrived and begin their settlement, but something strange was happening, which led them to investigations until suddenly a ruin was found directly under their settlement. When Pia and Dragos ventured into the settlement, a being took over Dragos body and only Pia realized it and the danger is presented. Now the story picks up right after Pia and the gang have subdued the possessed Dragos and her son Liam has arrived with the other Sentinels to assist. While Pia and the team work externally to try to understand the enemy, Dragos struggles internally to push the hijacker out of his own body. But even when Dragos is free, are the rest of the inhabitants of the new world safe or is the danger just beginning? Dragos, Pia and team must fight and hurry to protect the world from this psycho before someone they love is stolen from them permanently and the world as they know it ends. While it was safe to say this story was packed, it certainly didn’t focus much on Pia and Dragos’s relationship, despite us getting moments of passion and affection. Pia has always been much stronger than she believed herself to be, but in this story I think she truly found her footing as a leader and one willing to do just about anything required of her to protect her mate, children and people. She was hilarious, brave, smart, and clever by turns but maintained her loving and sweet nature in the end. Dragos was of course a serious badass, but I think he found his softer side in this one as he faced a loss and decision unlike any he ever imagined before finding his mate and having children. It was great to see these two and their family as they all came together to overcome evil and protect their own. I am hoping to see more of these characters later on down the line because I always love losing myself in their adventures, but if not, this story was a fitting ending all the same. Pia and Dragos at their best for sure.

This was the conclusion to the story started in The Unseen. I'm struggling here because I love Dragos and Pia. I feel like it is past time to let them be and enjoy their HEA, though. I didn't see much point in these two novellas except to maybe set up a whole new story arc with Liam that was hinted at the end. I've never been much interested in Liam, and the way the epilogue played out, I won't be reading whatever follows of him if or when it does.

Aryal is again the raging bitch she has been since the beginning. She is the only character who never shows any growth. I still hate her, and the fact Dragos does not rein her in when she is such a bitch has always baffled me. Kill her already and save everyone the frustration.

Tricks and Tiago - WTF? The whole arc with these two was stupid and then just left in the dirt with nothing else coming from either. It's like the author forgot they were even there for most of the time.

Anyway, it's over and I kind of think I'm done with reading new installments in the Elder Races world. I will obsessively reread my favorites as I often do, but the whole thing is becoming tired and ineffective at this point. When a group of the most powerful beings in the multiverse roam around scratching their asses and not accomplishing much else (except of course Pia and Dragos), the point has been lost.

Bentornate Fenici!

Veniamo a noi.

I believe the original 4 part story may have been condensed into 2. This may be the end of Drago & Pia’s story. & it seems Liam’s story is just beginning. It was a delight but it was short. I wouldn’t mind if the rumor proved false & 2 add’t parts are released.

This is the second story in a duology with The Unseen. When The Unseen came out in July 2020 there would be four stories set as the Chronicles of Rhyacia. But life happened and now there are only two stories left.

Together the make a short novel about Dragos and Pia, my favorite couple. In The Unseen they moved to Rhyacia, a pocket dimension with no sentient life, or so they thought…
The Adversary seamlessly continues where The Unseen ended, with Dragos possessed by the unknown entity and Pia and their son Liam try to free him.

I loved meeting all the characters. Pia has some difficult choices to make, but she has help, especially from Liam. Who’s growing into future hero material.
The story ends with heartbreak, love and dance. I loved it! A good ending of Dragos and Pia’s story and hopefully a startingpoint for lots more stories in the Elder Races series!

This book brings about a good ending to this little interlude. But man...it was hard fought with a lot of deaths. Pia and Dragos had to make some hard choices as a couple towards each other, as parents towards their child and plain fought like hell to exist. While they were successful in the end, everyone will bear scars for years to come, but the thing is...they have those years.

Wow! Just wow! I have said this before and I will say it again, and again, and again, the love that Pia and Dragos have for each other transcends time and space. Their love is infinite and beyond precious. I loved every single word, every emotion, every action sequenced encounter with Senusret (bad evil guy/thingy), all the tense, and dangerous moments, plus all the past characters, made for a poignant and moving story!!!! I FREAKING LUUUURRRVVVEEDDD IT! Another FANTASTIC STUPENDOUS, AWESOME, TERRIFIC, AMAZING AND FANTABULOUS JOB WELL DONE MS. HARRISON!!!!
5 BEAUTIFUL, JAZZ-HAND STARS🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
I pray and hope this isn't the end. I hope to see more Wyr in the future, especially since we have a new Wyr in charge, Lol
P.S. I love me some Azrael!!!

This is a hard one. I feel that these little novellas should have been a novel. Like that would solve the majority of the problems I have with these books.
First, I hate hate hate the fact that some of the characters that we got to know, love, and leave with HEA-s, were absolutely ruined with no redemption. Like Tricks. I hate her now, when there really was no need for that. In the Unseen they could have just said that she quit because she didn’t like being a Queen. Instead we got a petulant woman-child alcoholic in a tantrum, and that was never addressed and/or rectified. Aryal was unreasonably obnoxious, and everybody is done with her. That was also left at that.
Second, we have some gods appearing in the story, and it was just like- “oh, look at that.” And never mentioned again.
Third, a major traumatic event happened between Dragos and Liam, and it was basically glossed over. And I mean major, like PTSD level stuff.
All in all- this had so much potential but it all went down the drain when the author/publisher chose this format to tell the story. I feels rushed and unfinished in more ways than I can count. If it was a novel, with all the loose ends tied up, I would have loved it. If the next novella is just tying up loose ends I will give up on this series, just to preserve the memory of the characters that I loved.

I liked this book, but not giving 5 stars just for one reason, I wanted to know about the conversation between Dragos and Liam in the end. ( I'm trying not to give any spoilers) I wanted to know Liam's point of view on the events, and though Dragos says that issues has been resolved, I wanted to be there for that conversation. And again wanted to know if Liam had any hard feelings. Cause as big and powerful he is I just can't help but see him as the peanut he was.

This was a middling novella. If it wasn't bolstered by the fondness I have for the other stories in the series, I might not even have finished this for all that it's only novella-length. Also, I'm heartily tired of Harrison telling stories in serialized novella chunks instead of in one novel. It smacks of greed.

I think that I am over Drago and Pia stories - mostly because of Pia. Also I was unhappy with the Liam epilog - yes he would have changed but throwing back the scotch he felt Drago-ized. Basically, I just had a lot of nits and the cameos of past pairs didn't make up for them.

I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

I was thrilled that Thea decided against a 4 book arc and condensed it down to two. Overall I was happy with how the novella progressed and picked up from "The Unseen", with only some minor quirks. It was nice to see characters from other novels make an appearance, especially Grace, and there were some nice twists that kept me guessing to the end. I do love reading about Pia and Dragos, but hopefully in the future we'll get to see some of the other characters in main roles. Maybe Azrael will finally get his own story?

Overall, highly recommend to read if you're a fan of the Elder Races.

**Minor spoilers ahead**

My only pain point was the ending. I know "why" Thea chose to end the story like she did, but the emotional part of me mourned the loss of Liam's innocence as he spoke with Azrael.

Dragos and Pia are two of my all time favorite characters and I was so happy to get to read more about them. This book is the follow up to The Unseen and you really can't read this on without reading that one first. This book gives us both Pia and Dragos' POV which I enjoyed. Pia has grown so much since she was introduced in Dragon Bound, one of my all time favorite books. She's proved how strong she is and in this book she shows that she can be the leader her people need and make the tough decisions and is a perfect mate for Dragos.
We also get Dragos' POV when he is fighting the adversary. Dragos has always fascinated me, being so old and powerful. In this book we get to see his intellect as he works through the problem with the adversary. We see once again just how powerful he is and we get to see how much knowledge and experience he has with magic. It was interesting to see him pitted against something also very old and powerful.

A lot of the characters from The Elders series appear in this book and although they don't have much of a role to play it reminds us of the important relationships and that this group of friends/found family will always be there for each other. I enjoyed seeing them if only briefly. I also loved that we get a bit more of Liam as an adult and he does play an important role in this book. This book wraps up the Rhyacia story but leaves room to continue in the world - especially with Liam who I would love to read more about!

I'm vey happy to have gotten one last adventure for Dragos and Pia and thoroughly enjoyed this duology!
