This is the book from Naz Beheshti who started her career as a personal assistant to Steve Jobs, and later went on to become a successful entrepreneur. In this book, she discusses how her MAP method can help restructure ones life by prioritising well being over career so you don’t hurt both and strike a balance.

MAP method:
- Master Mindfulness
- Apply the 7 As to manage stress and build resilience
- Promote yourself to the CEO of well being

- The Pause, Breathe, Choose method aligns our head and heart.
- When you find yourself struggling with monkey mind (moving from one idea to another), stop and breathe
- Do not respond to mails when you feel scattered
- Meditate daily: the goal is to use senses and remain present in whatever you are doing
- Sit in silence for a minute or two before you enter into meetings
- Seven As - adopt, allocate, avoid, alter, adapt, accept and attend will help reduce stress and improve your adaptability
- Adopt and allocate are about making healthier choices and allocating enough recreational and relaxation time - paramount for the rest of the As
- Physical activity In the middle of the day helps people return to work energised, happier and more engaged
- Sleep 7 to 9 hours per night
- Worrying is like punishing yourself for something that has not happened
- Pay attention to your breathing, poster and facial expression, as well as what you are thinking and feeling
- How to change, accommodate to or accept situations : choose to focus on what you can control because that is where energy flows
- Prioritise your connection with yourself, friends and family, and the world to solidify your own goals - connections are important both at personal and professional levels. Do not let go off any opportunity for making connection
- When you have a moment of down time, don’t seek entertainment. Boredom can generate creativity and self-knowledge
- start feeling every moment with activity, you will increase your serenity, sense of direction and focus.
- If we want to see a change in the world we must start with our self
- To become your best self, sick purpose in your life, and use your pen to grow and your energy to be present.

I highly recommend this book to anyone trying to navigate the wild world of business. As a woman executive in tech, this book has been a guiding resource for me.

When it comes to succeeding in a fast-paced, challenging role while still maintaining balance through wellness and a focus on self-care, Naz is the subject matter expert. Her experiences as Steve Jobs’s right hand during Apple’s rapid growth years lends a depth and breadth of insight that is hard to come by when seeking a mentor.

I highly recommend this book to anyone, whether they’re in leadership already, trying to get there in a self-sustainable way, or even outside of leadership altogether trying to navigate the wild world of business.

It gives you the tools to succeed in the battleground — and sometimes that really does mean being able to pause for a moment, and remembering that we’re all humans here who need love, recognition and compassion. It also offers insights on how to make informed decisions, and how to trust ourselves in our judgements (goodbye, imposter syndrome!).

It was written really well, and it’s highly approachable! Try it, and I think you’ll find yourself referencing parts in situations you’ll encounter in your professional life. I definitely do.

I bought this book a while back, after hearing its author interviewed on Deloitte’s WorkWell podcast. Isn’t it a shame I didn’t read the book as soon as it arrived? I could have been inspired to start building my cartography skills much sooner!

I am restrained with 5-star reviews, and prior to reading this, I would have never bet I would be giving a business and leadership/personal growth book such high praise. That said, I’m inspired. I’ve marked passages to revisit and exercises to practice. The author provides actionable guidance for managing stress and accepting loss, and the suggestions are applicable to everyone, from entrepreneur to parent, staff to CEO.

Everything in its own time, I suppose… including the reading of this insightful, practical book. Having felt more in control and self-aware lately, it’s time to make my MAP.

Naz Beheshti’s book is a "how-to" mix of personal development and professional coaching. It is organized around Naz’s conceptual tools (the 7 A’s, The 3 P’s, Mindful MAP making) that can be applied to different life/work situations. I think Naz is like many high achieving professional women – they come into an environment, learn “the system” of how to get ahead and do so, until they are bored or unfulfilled. I was that person myself. Ms. Beheshti is unique in that she started as Steve Job’s personal assistant, which gives her elite bona-fides as well as access to the mindset of a business visionary and the Apple culture. As a young professional I also worked with Apple Computer in the late 80’s and early 90’s, and absolutely loved the people and culture even though it was super cut throat underneath the creativity.

I think that many of Ms. Beheshti’s concepts are covered in other books and other approaches, but her dive into “prana” or personal energy, and connection to meditation and yoga are unique. I so wish concepts like this had been around when I was a young professional, when the focus was professional accomplishment with very few boundaries. In fact, I wish that this type of message was being taught to all people in high school and college, to better prepare them for a balanced, successful and fulfilling life.

As a frequent reader of personal development books, I find reading them periodically “refreshes” the message and keeps me on track. This book did so very successfully for me even though I am in a different phase of life now, and I would definitely recommend it to any and all people seeking an enriching rewarding life.

I started using the Pause. Breath. Choose. framework under Naz’s direct coaching. It provided an easy to remember framework that reduced my anxiety around quick decision making, a challenge I was working through at that time. It gave me permission to slow down and be more thoughtful and purposeful with my decision making.

I also adapted the framework to my personal life, in particular in my actions raising a toddler. My patience increased dramatically, improving my relationship with my young son.

I was stoked to see this book drop after realizing the power of Pause. Breath. Choose. because I can now more easily share the lessons with my team. We already have this slated in for a future book club read!

My sessions with Naz were all about me. I was delighted to learn about the journey that brought her to this point and the surreal dream that sparked the project.

The biggest duh moment for me was the simple revelation that I am doing better by the business that I help run than I am for my own personal well-being and household. I am currently working on applying the principles from this book to my life more broadly than the bullet list of challenges I identified when Naz was my coach.

I have read many wellness / mindfulness based books for it is a great interest of mine, but none of those books were able to translate the teachings behind mindfulness the way Pause. Choose. Breath.: Become the CEO of your Well-Being does. Naz Beheshti takes a different approach to mindfulness than John Kabat-Zinn took when he utilized buddhist teachings in a secular manner in order to integrate the benefits of meditation into the medical sector. Beheshti is able to create a more corporate based lens on mindfulness by portraying this practice as a tool to enhance productivity and improve business results. She makes an important point about how critical it is to not let work stress conflict with home life and even provides steps at the end of each chapter to educate people on how they can be their best selves and thrive in their careers. In a post-pandemic world, mental health is critical for survival and success. Not enough corporations are realizing the importance of employee well-being and how it can excel their business. Beheshti is one of the first to make this connection and act on improving the working world with a holistic approach to well-being. Well Done!

Just finished the excellent book Pause. Breathe. Choose.
Naz does a great job explaining the process and providing examples for improved mindfulness and Self awareness. The book has been a motivating tool for me in the last couple of weeks and is a great reminder that you to invest in yourself to achieve your goals and improve your general well being.

Having been Steve Jobs executive assistant for a decade Naz gained valuable insight from one of the biggest visionaries the world has known. She weaves that experience(as well as others) into an easy process for the reader to apply to live and work to your highest potential. I particularly liked the ‘business hacks, action steps, and key takeaways’ at the end of each section highlighting what you can implement in your business and everyday life to make sustained changes. Looking forward to her next read!!

Rather than focus on a single element (such as business success, physical health, mental health, etc) this book recognizes that problems in one sphere of life will impact another - so having balance leads to success, health, and happiness. By seeing the bigger picture and breaking down it's parts, the author effectively drives home the difference between "doing well" and "being well". The book is well organized, and I like how chapters end with "business hacks", "action items" and "key takeaways" that reinforce the message of each chapter and encourage the reader to not just read the book but to apply the learnings in very practical ways....these are the types of things that will likely bring readers back to the book time and time again as a "reference" manual as opposed to a "one and done" read. All in all, a good book with plenty of substance, but still a fairly easy read.

Pause. Breathe. Choose is a practical and methodical book that provides a clear path towards evolving not only your mental fortitude but also presents a compelling perspective on the idea of mindfulness as a universal idea that governs most aspects of our life.

The book is divided into sections that lead with titles that could be easily given as bits of colloquial wisdom but then quickly does a deep dive into an organized and thoughtful breakdown of various elements that comprise the summation of the section title.

A fulfilling well thought out read with much to offer for those just beginning their personal journey to those who are already well along.

So take a Pause. Breathe. and Choose...to read this book.

Highly recommended.

In my career as a mortgage loan officer I find myself working when everyone else is off of work, and that means being available more hours then I can handle. I was absorbing and fixated on my clients situations as if it were my own. I highly recommend this book because the author has an effective way to incorporate you personal life with career and make you the best version of yourself. I feel it not only has changed my mindset but has been a benefit to my clients in the way I interact with them using the tools you are given in this book.

It's one thing to read a book then close it and maybe remember it now and then. It's quite another to read one that actively develops your own mental muscle in order to rejigger your thoughts and get immediate results - especially after you finish reading the book.
The exercises within work so well, I wish this could be taught in elementary schools or in high school at least. I am so grateful this book exists - it's immediately actionable, effective, and generative. Enjoy!

Pause. Breathe. Choose. is what I really needed as I'm building both a consulting business and my "side hustle" as a professional artist. Even though I "know what I should do" to keep my energy and focus on pointe, the personal and professional stories really gave me the reminder and nuance I needed to step up my commitment to my health.

Highly recommend!

This book stands out among the many written on the subject of wellness. Two things make this a very different book: first, it is clear that the author has personally travelled the fast paced road of corporate career and faced many of the issues most of us had to got though, and second her thoughtfulness about the fact that, to be valuable, recommendations must account for the fact that we are creatures of both logical thinking and emotions and rather than trying to deny our nature, we ought to recognize and accept our many facets.
While I have many favorite sections in the book, the one thing that keeps coming back to me is that our physical and mental wellness require us to build bridges over the various gaps we harbor and that have been caused by either our imperfect nature or life circumstances. Our physical and emotional well being and professional success depend in fact on our ability to recognize these gaps and on our skills at building durable bridges so that we can be whole and avoid painful fractures.
This can be a hugely beneficial book to the thoughtful reader.

This book was remarkable in a myriad of ways, from its ease of listening to the summaries provided, second only to the content and lessons to learn thru the eyes of Naz. My only wish was that I had come across this easy to absorb book prior to living thru and experiencing the full impact of caregiver burnout, and its ultimate consequences professionally.

One of the best self development books I’ve read in a while. The personal narrative was interesting and added to the tangible strategies proposed throughout the book. What stood out to me was how truly approachable the improvement strategies and stress management tips were. I can definitely see myself implementing the lessons the author advocates for in my own life.

Keep a journal beside you when you read this book!

This is the perfect time for a book like this when so many of us are working-from-home and struggling to find the right work-life balance. So many of us are compelled to be working constantly to show productivity. This book goes into how we manage our energy and how that impacts every facet of our lives. Alternatively, it’s important to take breaks and consider our mental health or we truly have nothing. Finding that balance in life is what real success is.

I’ve currently had the most demanding 2 months at work of my entire 21 year career and heard the Pause – Breathe – Choose manta in my head where I have choose mindfulness. These breaks have allowed me to complete projects and thrive under huge stress.
I’d definitely recommend this book!

Pause. Breathe. Choose.: Become the CEO of Your Well-Being is one of those rare books that nails both the larger philosophy and the practical steps to manage your life and career. Naz Beheshti provides a really practical framework -- including business hacks, action steps, and key takeways at the end of each chapter -- for implementing mindfulness into your daily routine at work and beyond. Along the way, she shares her journey, which includes amazing stories like barely escaping a harrowing stampede of monks excited to see the Dalai Lama and lessons learned working alongside Steve Jobs, and lets you see her philosophy in action. Beheshti asks the questions all of us should be asking ourselves. Anyone who actually wants to figure out the answers would benefit greatly from reading this book.
